I think her choice to stay in that whispery, tight sound is beautiful for this song because she's pleading with someone privately. You wouldn't shout openly about a beautiful woman taking your husband, you would quietly plead and with a powerful emotion. It's perfect. Whether that was done consciously or not I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised. Dolly Parton is a genius ♡

Dolly Parton is such an INTELLIGENT singer - the whispering tone is something she can support all the way through, and it fits with the song, and it means she can make it look effortless. My first singing teacher told me that past a certain age, the natural voice is basically gone and what you have left is technique. I think that would fit with the choices Dolly makes here - no pyrotechnics, just a song sung cleverly.
Dolly is the unassuming Empress of song. From decades of top level performance to prolific songwriter. She has always been the whole package. Thank you for showcasing one of the greats.

Point is : "no matter how simple a song could seem, that doesn't necessarily mean the singer isn't doing much of a hard work. Singing effortlessly and keeping a straight smile is also a hard work."
At Glastonbury they always try to have a "legend", or something a bit different, on the Sunday after everyone is rocked out or danced out of more contemporary music. For example, Johnny Cash played there way back in 1994 - first time I went - and that was fantastic.
And Johnny's the Patriarch of country music. It was nice to hear he still had that low baritone he famous for on his last album. Perhaps country musicians are masters of taking care of their voices.
Saaaaame, I'd even put up with the " Best live vocals "PopCrush video. Which honestly, is no where near her best vocals. But her Glastonbury & Coachella sets are good for her rock side, Albert Hall isn't super technical but shows her ability on the grand side. But as far as new stuff I really loved her singing " Patricia " on the Late Late show - it was really good. So was the tv debut of " Hunger "
Just stumbled into your channel but find your commentary and analysis really a breath of fresh air. Being able to constructively criticize without ever coming across as condescending is a real gift which you balance perfectly. Explanations are succinct and keep my novice ears at attention throughout without becoming too complex nor convoluted, and appreciate such wonderful articulations. Also have to mention how awesome it is you represent the Jazz so often. I feel Utah doesn’t often give itself much positive diversified representation in the arts but you’re killin it. Keep up the great work and thanks from SL,UT for bringing such a fresh and respectful vibe to so many.
"...She's singing in Glastonbury, which makes no sense to me." I know what you mean, but as someone who's (maybe) slightly less ignorant of Country music, I've been informed that Country music is quite popular in many places outside of North America. It's particularly popular in Australia, for example. And of course, everyone loves Dolly. Even Progressive rock/metal heads like me. She's one of the most prolific songwriters of all time with a surprisingly diverse catalog, she's a great performer and she has a WONDERFUL sense of humor, especially about herself. She's truly the Betty White of popular music.
@PK Blondie No doubt, but the phrase "popular music" doesn't necessarily mean the genre of pop-music. It also refers to music that is popular, regardless of genre. Yes, including country music, metal music, jazz, blues, rap, you name it.
I think it's honestly damn near impossible to not like Dolly Parton. I'm not a country fan at all, but I'm a Dolly Parton fan -- she's extremely talented, and she's also just a fantastic person. Once you've heard one of her songs, there's no point in trying not to sing along when you hear it again. You're going to, even if it's just in your head.
I've named my daughter Jolene because of this woman. She has always been an idol an a very important part of my childhood she has always been a staple. Don't ever forget Dolly Parton!
Hi Sam, You are one of only a few reaction youtubers I actually respect in the analysis. Dolly is timeless and not at all clickbait so all credit to you including her. :)

Dolly plays Glastonbury bc as you said she is a legend. There is no place she doesn’t fit. 👑 You’ve been speaking a lot to character and the choices you make that aren’t necessarily “right” but are appropriate for the purpose recently. I’d like to see you react to a singer doing an in character performance vs a straight concert performance of the same song (I.e., defying gravity as Elphaba vs Idina in concert, or Norbert doing I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You).

She’s an incredible artist and person. She’s given back SO much to her hometown and she never brags about it. From free monthly books to any child who needs it, to paying for every family who lost their home from the fires we had a few years ago and getting them into new homes. A literal angel 💖

I have no clue what you are talking about. I zoned out a bit even. But the sound of your voice and the way you speak with such knowledge and passion is beyond amazing. Dolly Parton always had a beautiful tone, I remember listening to her when I was little even though I didn't listen to much country, but shes a country legend. Please react to AURORA Live. The song "Warrior" or "I Went To Far" at Honda stage or etc. Thank yeee!
Takes a lot of confidence to perform live and captivate an audience at the same time. She certainly uses her vocal ranges to emphasize the story of JOLENE. Kudos Dolly! So much to be said for navigating the cruel waters of the music industry n done w/Flair!
She's an American treasure. My Dad was a Porter Wagoner fan, back in the day. She started out on Porter's show in the late 60's through the mid 70's. She had a show of her own, where she used to sing the song Whitney Houston made famous, at the end of each show.
Sam, I love your videos and you’ve taught me so much about music in just the short time that you’ve been making these videos. But the captions you insert when you stumble over your words are about the funniest thing on the internet.
Gosh Sam I’m always struck by how kind and generous and empowering you are with your critique. There is always something that a singer can work on but you’re never disparaging or insulting. It’s really Uplifting and always puts me in a good mood. 💜
Hi Sam, so glad to see you completely fine after being a bit ill and being more constant with your vids again, also congratulations on you rising sucess here by gathering more and more fans of the channel. I'd really much appreciate to see an analysis on anything live from David Gilmour, also some more alternate singers like Siouxsie Sioux, Nina Hagen or Klaus Noni since they aren't on the genres you've covered so far. Keep up the good clear work that even us that don't have formation can understand and start using ourselves
I can imagine some country-folk saying ""What are you talking about boy."Dolly has a most distinctive voice that when you hear her you know that is Dolly. She is a very savey business lady that has done a lot of good for the region she grew up in.
I am loving your reaction videos to classic singers performing their big hits live. And Dolly is one of the best! Keep it up! And I really like the shorter hair. It looks good on you!
Your positivity with all your videos is so refreshing. Such an odd subject matter for me to have gotten hooked on!! Keep up the good work. You make the world a better place.
Oh, music is down my lane, especially with your explanations/commentary. A bright spot in my day for sure. I'm not wild about heavy metal or hip/hop? Just my preference to have music to which I can sing or hum along 😘
I love watching these. As a teacher how do you know what range is best for a client? As a beginner how do you find out what key is best for you? That's what's hard in my opinion.
I was wondering the same thing. I'm guessing starting by singing what feels most comfortable, notes you can hit perfectly and then building and practicing from there?
Sam, I really love your reviews. You are very positive and respectful to the artists you analyze. It would be so easy to be super critical of the vocal techniques of great singers with no classical training, but you point out the true talent they do possess. Keep up the great work!
I love to listen to your analyze singers, how honest and kind you are about what is happening. You sound like a great teacher and your students are lucky to have you 🙂
Please react to Corey Taylor (Slipknot), maybe acoustic Spit it out or Snuff and Serj Tankian (System of a Down), they are great singers and both can sing hard or clear if they want
I am not a singer and have never been or even wanted to be. But I am enthralled by this channel. I love listening to experts break down the complexities of their field. So well done!
Please critique my love Ville Valo, who is listed as one of 8 singers of popular music today who possesses a 5 octave range or above...I'd love your thoughts on this amazing, yet underrated singer.
I'm enjoying learning through you about another side of music, thank you. Your passion, positivity, education and enjoyment of others clearly shows and is a breath of fresh air in today's world. It's uplifting to watch someone genuinely share their knowledge with others. Stay the way you are!
When the content is quality, always happy to give a thumbs up and a comment so that the RUclips algorithm recommends your videos to others. Great work!
It would be interesting to have you react to Jack White’s/The White Strips version of Jolene! I love your videos, they always bring a smile to my face 💕💖💕
I’ve never commented on a RUclips page, but I liked your video and you seem genuine especially when you asked for support to the channel. Good job champ.
That people on the blue shirts are not security they are sign language interpreters they are singing in sign lenguaje making the experience enjoyable for deaf people
I don't think that's correct. If it was a sign language interpreter, it would be one person up on stage so everyone could see him/her. I think it's just the security people having fun. I could be wrong, of course.
I would love if you react to a song from a group called "La 5ta Estación". I love them but I can hear the singer take a breath everytime she ends a sentence, even if she is not making a lot of effort and I was wondering why that happens? It would be really cool. I recommend a song called "El Sol No Regresa". 🖤
Hey Sam! Another awesome vid. I'm loving the variety in genres. I was wondering what your thoughts are on Florence Welch and her "golden diaphragm". Thanks!
Love Dolly! You always do such a good job of breaking down a song without interrupting the flow so we get the best of the performance and your teachings.

You are so intelligent but so easy to understand. Love your videos they are super helpful and fun to watch too 👍👍🎶🎵🎶🎵
I would love to see more reacts to country music like reba mcentyre, jon berry etc. Also elvis Presley
Dolly Parton is a national treasure. I love hearing this technical analysis.
I was in the audience for this and it was incredible 😭
She's an American treasure. My Dad was a Porter Wagoner fan, back in the day. She started out on Porter's show in the late 60's through the mid 70's. She had a show of her own, where she used to sing the song Whitney Houston made famous, at the end of each show.
Dolly has a wonderful voice and a wonderful personality all the way. Nice video.
Sam, I love your videos and you’ve taught me so much about music in just the short time that you’ve been making these videos. But the captions you insert when you stumble over your words are about the funniest thing on the internet.
I just love her. She can do no wrong.
Gosh Sam I’m always struck by how kind and generous and empowering you are with your critique. There is always something that a singer can work on but you’re never disparaging or insulting. It’s really
Uplifting and always puts me in a good mood.
Nina Hagen, yes!
Gilmore or Hagen would be divine!!!!
Sam, you are a shining gem. I'm really happy to see you growing on this platform, and bringing solid voice technique to the masses!
Yasssss I love this performance 😍 she is a legend for sure.
Your positivity with all your videos is so refreshing. Such an odd subject matter for me to have gotten hooked on!!
Keep up the good work. You make the world a better place.
So enjoy your critiques! I’ve had my Sam Johnson “fix” for the day🤓
I hope this one was more down your lane than yesterday's!
Oh, music is down my lane, especially with your explanations/commentary. A bright spot in my day for sure. I'm not wild about heavy metal or hip/hop? Just my preference to have music to which I can sing or hum along 😘
I love how Sam breaks down how different people sing different songs. It's made me look at singers differently. Thanks for everything
I love watching these. As a teacher how do you know what range is best for a client? As a beginner how do you find out what key is best for you? That's what's hard in my opinion.
He can hear when person's voice sounds most comfortable for them
I was wondering the same thing.
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (Wacken Open Air 2013)
Zockor He already did Nightwish sort of
This!
Yeeessss
@@brandonvalle1631
They were 20 seconds and again, it was not nigthwish with Floor, nor that song, nor that presentation on that stage.
Excellent choice
I love to listen to your analyze singers, how honest and kind you are about what is happening. You sound like a great teacher and your students are lucky to have you 🙂
Please react to Corey Taylor (Slipknot), maybe acoustic Spit it out or Snuff and Serj Tankian (System of a Down), they are great singers and both can sing hard or clear if they want
YESS
Always thought some of corey Taylors acoustic stuff would be perfect for a review, broken or song 3 in particular
@@olivia10117 so not appreciated and more people need to be aware of his beautiful voice and lyrics
I have been waiting for a review of Valo forever. I hope it happens at some point.
@@jj.the.duchess I hope so...I'd love his honest opinion on what I consider one of the most beautiful singing voices I've ever heard.
Always appreciate your detailed analysis and little video comments
Stopped watching videos for a couple weeks, so we got dreamy, Sam?
I'm enjoying learning through you about another side of music, thank you. Your passion, positivity, education and enjoyment of others clearly shows and is a breath of fresh air in today's world. It's uplifting to watch someone genuinely share their knowledge with others. Stay the way you are!
Ya know id be interested to see you react to some Frank Sinatra.
I just really love watching these videos. You look at everyone/treat everyone you are analyzing the same way. Great work!!!
Review Lea Solanga "On My Own".
Murrie Curl yessss!!! Jack is my love and his version of this song is amazing.
I’ve never commented on a RUclips page, but I liked your video and you seem genuine especially when you asked for support to the channel. Good job champ.
I would love to hear you analyze Carrie Underwood singing How Great Thou Art.
You mean the one with Vince Gill? Oh my god, that one makes me cry every single time.
nummysmom Yes! I know! It makes me cry too! 😄
Love the diversity of the artists and music you critique on your channel. Thanks Sam! ♥️😍
Their coats literally have "security" written on them
There was a sign language interpreter on the stage. That looks like security for sure
I love you reaction videos...you break things down for us novices with such clarity and thoughtfulness. You’re so awesome Sam 😊
Please do react to Christina Grimmie
xUnimportant x3 amen! Miss her 😢
@@rachelp6087 Me too, love. Me too..
The real pure enjoyment on your face while watching was amazing to see. I love country music and would love to see you react to more of it.
I would love if you react to a song from a group called "La 5ta Estación". I love them but I can hear the singer take a breath everytime she ends a sentence, even if she is not making a lot of effort and I was wondering why that happens? It would be really cool. I recommend a song called "El Sol No Regresa". 🖤
I always enjoy your selections, as well as your vocal breakdowns. Keep on keeping on!
Dolly is a goddess.
Love these videos-his love of what he does makes it fun to watch.
Hey Sam! Another awesome vid. I'm loving the variety in genres. I was wondering what your thoughts are on Florence Welch and her "golden diaphragm". Thanks!
Love Dolly! Thank you for your professional view!
LAYNE STALEY!!!!
Yaaaassssss!
I'd love to see him react to his unplugged performances
Probably the best aspect of your content is how you effortlessly explain why something is musically pleasing and how major vocalists achieve this.
Haha the zoom in on your breath
I thought I had a stroke for a min. It was perfection. 🖤
I have loved this song since I was a kid ! Thanks Sam. Ur the best !
Can you imagine if security in concerts was like that? Lovely hahaha by the way, it's my birthday. Please love me
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! 🎂😍🎁🎉🎈
That's the atmosphere dolly brings! :D
Happy birthday. It was supposed to be my birthday, but I decided to be born 3 days later. To this day I'm still late for most things 😅

Love Dolly! You always do such a good job of breaking down a song without interrupting the flow so we get the best of the performance and your teachings.
React to The HU, it's a Mongolian band, they have 2 songs.
That would be interesting. I’m very curious to learn more about Mongolian throat singing and how that amazing otherworldly sound is achieved
I don't know how you got in my news feed...glad you did. Enjoyed this.
Your hair looks so healthy!
It looks greacy but thats good i quess. Shining in the dark

@@joshtuckey3582 We were talking about sam's hair lol thats why i was confused
Excited for when you have more lesson availability. Keep up the good work.
You should do the miley cyrus version, (not a huge miley fan) but she did really, really good on that one
When she's not being a disgusting skank, she has talent
Wow this is one of my favorite Dolly Parton performances! So glad to see you react to this one
