I mean.... the vast majority of people who love this track have next to zero understanding of music. Yeah it might help a bit to understand sound engineering and drumming (I guess?) but the appeal of this beat is primal and immediate. You don't need to think about it, it's just obvious on its face that it's perfect and incredibly powerful.
13 years old, in 1984, at the house of my very recent new best friend, when he played it on his drumkit, and introduced me to the best band ever to grace the earth, and I was hooked from day 1.
Loosen your snare till it’s just touching the bottom. Opened a whole new world of sound and feel when I did it. That’s how he got that sound per his drum tech.
The secret is in the bass drum. The rest of this groove is very basic, but how the bass ties everything in is what makes it so hypnotic. Just finished a 4 hour loop and ready for more!
The key to the bouncy feel of this particular (and a few others) recording is the perfect timing of the reverb as it bounced off the walls and back into the mics. It's almost like a slap back delay. In essence, it created ghost notes along with John's own incomparable playing. ;)
I think im going to request this be played at my funeral. There won't be some preacher reading scripture. There won't be any friends telling tear jerk memories. There will just be this drum loop. You will come in, sit down, listen to this for a bit , then leave.

The hammer of the gods in percussive form. My two favorite Zep tunes are When The Levee Breaks and Goin' To California. Levee just because of Bonham's unrelenting hammering drive and Cali because it's just goddamn great tune.
No click. No gimmicks. Real time keeping. An iconic drum sound to say the least, this drum sound came from just 2 microphones set up in a stairwell. “Bonham set up his kit at the bottom of Headley Grange's three-story stairwell. Engineer Andy Johns recalls placing two Beyerdynamic M160 ribbon microphones at the top of the stairwell in a stereo configuration.Oct 5, 2012
To really appreciate how powerful and brilliant this beat is, start playing it at 1.25 speed, and switch to normal after 4 bars. THANK YOU for sharing.
If all of us are completely honest-- there really isn't a drum solo on the planet that compares to the first two bars of "When the Levee Breaks". Locomotive Heaviness. Enough said.
The beat that inspired me to become a drummer, and now I've mastered the beat. Every time I sit down by the drums, first thing I have to play in honor of Bonham is this beat every time, love ya big man
This is so amazing. Normally, when I hear this on the radio or play it on my phone or whatever, I never hear everything because it's very short. Listening to it like this, I appreciate it so much more because I can hear the hi-hat and not only focus on the kick and snare. Thank you for doing this.
This iconic drum beat (played by John Bonham) has been sampled in so many songs by so many artists over the years such as: Rhymin & Stealin - Beastie Boys (1986) Kim - Eminem (2000) Don’t Hurt Yourself- Beyoncé (2016) Lyrical Gangbang - Dr. Dre (1992) Taking Control - Aphex Twin (2001) Dollar and a Dream III - J Cole (2011) Midnight - Ice T (1991) Prodigal Son - Kid Rock (1992) Magellan - Mike Oldfield (1994) Pokémon World - Russel Velazquez (2000) Arose - Eminem (2017) & many more. 😎
Two Beyer M160 ribbon microphones hanging from the staircase at Headley Grange, into two channels of a Helios 69 console, run through two Urei (Universal Audio) 1176 A 'blue stripe' compressors, with an aux signal sent to Page's Binson EchoRec, returned back to a another Helios channel (or perhaps two - not sure of the Binson has stereo outputs)... Simplicity and pure magic! (Info from the Andy Johns' interview in 'Behind The Glass', volume I).
There's a lot going on with the hi hats. Listen to the dynamics. He's hitting them "medium steady" then on the "and three and four" he lags just a molecule and hits a bit harder. That's where that groove feel comes from. The hi hats are "steering" your ears and making you feel that swampy heartache!!! Of course that Echorec Echo helps and just the sound and engineering of Bonzo's drums are godly. It's like Thor is playing the greatest drum kit from Asgard and the sound is raining down on us mere mortals.
WHERE DID YOU FIRST HEAR THIS BEAT?? CONFESSION TIME....
Scooter - She’s the Sun!
Battle Without Honour or Humanity - Hotei
Beasties
Smoke on the Water and Rhapsody in blue by the Holigan masters meet Randy Rhoads
Dr.Dre - lyrical gangbang
When the Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
to this day I’m still waiting for the harmonica

“Fool in the rain” though?

EPIC. Enigma sampled this for their "Return To Innocence 380 Midnight Mix".
Hypnotic, truly mesmerising. It really has got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home.
By far the best sound out of a drum kit ever recorded
Fascinating to know this was recorded in a hallway...not in a studio

The simple groove that no one can duplicate. It's in Bonham's DNA, unfortunately lost to the world.

@@ConfortinDEADHORSE true that!
@@ConfortinDEADHORSEno rim shot just the beastly Ludwig Bonham snare
The delay sounds so great and fits the feel of the song really well
Instead of a seven minute loop, it should be a seven year loop.
Once you click on this and get stuck in the beat, it’s hard to click off 😂 the drum is sooo good Hail to Bonzo the G.O.A.T.
Damn, improv possibilities are endless with this groove😎
This is the greatest beat of all time
I've been jamming to this loop for the last 6-7 years, but never thought to stop and thank you. So here it is: Thank You, sir!
