    Silver price is allegedly manipulated by big banks. One need to be cautious of this. They don't let Silver rise much. Silver's industrial use also one reason why they won't let silver rise. Price control of silver is something we need to be cautious of it. It shouldn't be compared with Gold.

      @haricosmic4306 I don't know. I feel Gold is safer. If you are investing in Silver, you should know when to exit. It is not like Gold. If you don't exit Silver at the right time, all profits could be wiped out. Risk vs Reward is high in silver.

      @@VmlucyBDaGV2aQ silver supplies are dwindling, as the suppressed prices have stalled mining operations. Silver also gets used up, as it is too cheap to warrant recycling. Silver also gets used up for decades in batteries and solar panels. We are on the verge of a major shortage. Silver will drive the banking collapse worldwide.

    Sir... Could you please educate us on Exit approach also.. Thank You..

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  2 месяца назад +200

      Exit is a lot easier than entry. A simple framework that's worked for me (most times) is the reversal of fortunes approach. Here's what I mean by that --
      When investing in a stock or asset class, you would have identified 3-4 key reasons e.g. valuation is low, momentum is rising, promoters are buying, high growth rates etc. This prompted an entry into the stock. Say, 3 years later you find that many of these points have reversed i.e.
      - growth has slowed down from 20% to 5% (like what happened with Exide)
      - valuations became too expensive (like Avenue Supermart)
      - promoter is selling (like Easy Trip Planners)
      In such a scenario, an exit is the best course of action. Ofcourse, there is some subjectivity here which is good because entering & exiting is not a simple mathematical problem. It's got a lot of qualitative elements & biases.
      For example -- I exited Sterlite Technologies after 2 quarters of holding it after I realised the management is changing goal posts too many times & it's not focussed enough in completing existing projects. I sold my holdings there due to lack of confidence in the company's management -- that no screener can help you understand.
      It requires reading of the transcripts, news, blogs etc. and this approach has worked very well for me so far. What I love most about it is the simplicity of it -- if the reasons for which one entered the stock/asset doesn't exist, then simply exit
      This same logic, when applied to silver means the exit points are when --
      a) there are new sources of supply
      b) people come up with alternatives to silver in production of solar panels & industrial uses,
      c) lower gold-silver ratio,
      d) reduction in manufacturing activity etc.
      Hope this helps

      Fantastic point Shankar - I guess the general problem many may be having is that there is typically no strategy in buying. Mostly it is done by hearsay and there is no clear exit strategy there.😂

      Would you like through more light on this?

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  2 месяца назад +1

      @@saurabhkesharwani6143 Yes, so say you buy digital gold (DG) worth 10000 rupees. There's a small GST of 3%, so you actually receive 9,700. Now assume Gold prices have increased by 10% in an year and you feel like selling. So you DG is now 9,700+970 = 10,670. When you try selling, please notice, there's a 5% buy-sell rate spread (sometimes more). So, when you click on sell you receive 10,670*95% = 10,136. This means what you've actually made is (10,136/10,000) - 1 = 1.36% and what you thought you made is 10%.
      This problem gets hidden a bit over the long term. So say its 10% return every year for 10 years. Then by the same calculation, it comes to 9,700*1.10^10*95% = 23,901. So ((23,901/10,000)^(1/10))-1 give us an annual return of 9.1% -- which is a lot closer to 10% than the 1.36% we got on a 1 year buy/sell.
      Hope this clarifies. Pls do the math on excel, it will get clear.

Silver has industrial usages and if the price goes up, companies can find alternatives which will again lower the demand and price of silver. Secondly, also, let me know What would be the moving average whether it will be 20/50/100/200 moving average to maintain the risk-to-reward ratio I am looking for your response. Thank you. Sir, I have a pretty relevant question, I am investing in SIlver ETF since a year and trading too. I am struggling with the taxation part, as they have been changed consecutively in a row and are taxed at slab rates in short term. Although when I see my AIS, all the silver ETF are market as equity oriented mutual funds. And now I am confused where to put them in ITR 2 as they should not be under 111A which is now taxed at 20%. I would really appreciate a reply on this and also, if possible, video. Thanks

    What kind of returns CAGR do you foresee for the next 5 years? That should be the key question before making such investment decision, even in case hedging since there are options.
    One more concern is always the replacement price. If the prices reach too high, the industry will start looking for alternatives and will therefore act as a ceiling for the prices. There is also some volatility in the EV market itself.

      I did come across very optimistic reports on silver but I don't have enough to have a view of silver's performance 5 years from now. Perhaps it's not my approach as I prefer to invest, track quarterly, invest more if signs are promising and go with the flow. It's worked for me so far, so haven't tried the 5-year-forecast approach

    As usual, this video is also quite insightful and to the point. Thanks. Ibhave 2 queries:
    1) Considering silver is most volatile asset class, how do you identify the exit point besides gold silver ratios?
    2) Considering Trump's apathy towards renewable energy, do you see demand for solar panels and consequenly silver going down?

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  2 месяца назад +1

      Thx
      1. Exit points are exactly the opposite of entry points. I'll go with this logical argument here so .. a) new sources of supply, b) alternatives to silver in production of solar panels, b) lower gold-silver ratio, d) reduction in manufacturing activity etc.
      2. I have no views on this. Speculating with little information is not something that's worked for me, I prefer monitoring information as it comes & react fast to take advantage of it or spare losses

    Shouldnt gold mortgage loan has less interest rate than person loan and other loans?? Why is it not so?? Gild loan at Muthoot finance is 11% and personal loan is 10.5%.

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  Месяц назад

      Personal loans aren't 9% -- can you share which bank is offering at these rates? By my reckoning, the MCLR itself is about 9.1% .. even one were to add a spread of just 1.5% for the grade A+ customer (high income, salaried, reside own house, high CIBIL score, low outstandings), still this will be atleast 10.5%. Generally, PL interest rates range from 10.5% to 16% -- in today's times

    • @mathfobia
      @mathfobia Месяц назад

      @shankarnath sorry my mistake. Yes they are around 10.5%. But why is gold loans costlier than personal loans??

    • @shankarnath
      @shankarnath  Месяц назад

      @@mathfobia I think the average comes to the same when compared to PLs. The average interest rate for PLs (across all strata of borrowers) and gold loan is the same -- around 12%.
      As to why gold loan is 12% and not lower, some reasons include:
      1. Admin costs of handling gold (storing it, appraising it, hedging cost etc. are all expensive; this is not the case with other secured loans like LAMF for example)
      2. Gold prices fluctuate and lenders factor the possibility of a borrower's default. For instance, if the price of gold falls by 20% and you have received 90% of your gold's value -- then you might default leading to a 10% loss (maybe more) for the lender
      3. Gold loans are mostly used by people in rural or semi-urban areas who lack access to cheaper credit options. So there might be some skimming off the top by lenders by charging a higher interest rate
      4. NBFCs like Muthoot & Manappuram Finance charge higher rates (as compared to banks) to account for quick disbursals and lenient requirements
      Hope this helps
