      When I go up to bowl, I line up and just play a tune in my head since I bowl tournaments where you can't have earphones. It helps me calm down a bit and worry about executing the shot.

      I try to remember to do a mental pre-shot routine:
      Stance... grip... visualize (ball path)... relax... launch.
      But sometimes I forget to do the mental pre-shot routine. So, probably, I should add "Remember to do the mental pre-shot routine" to the beginning of my mental pre-shot routine.

      I haven't tried it yet (I probably will the next time I practice), but I've been considering breathing exercises during my approach. I've been practicing yoga over the last few months, and one of its biggest facets is that of syncing breath to movement. So my idea is to focus on my breathing as I walk to the line (e.g. deep inhale on step 1, hold for steps 2, 3, and 4, and exhale on my slide step). Doesn't need to be a complicated pattern, as long as it's consistent.
      Your thoughts?

      Derek M. Toohey I thinks that’s an awesome way to focus on your breathing. Yoga isn’t as easy as they make it look. Let us know if your breathing technique works

    I've been told several times to finish my 10th frame because I didn't know what frame I'm on and no idea of my score until I finished, those were usually my higher games.

    I don't view the mental game as dealing with internal issues, like worrying or checking the score. Rather, the mental game is about handling external issues that try to disrupt your performance, like missing team members, beer spills, messed up automatic scorers, or the opponents smoking reeking cigars. You have to be able to shake off negative distractions. But there are positive mental distractions too. This only happened once in 40 years of bowling, but my match play opponent was being particularly unfriendly. It was about the 4th frame of the 3rd game and I picked up my ball to wipe it off while he was bowling. He hadn't even lined up his feet but he got all huffy that I was out of line. Even his teammates were surprised at his attitude. I said to myself "I have to win this game" and it was all strikes to the end. The problem is you can't bottle that kind of motivator.

    Shot 235 then 158. Thought about keeping the ball closer to my foot. Hit 203 last game. Reminded myself before game 3 the prior 2 games are gone go forward and think about what you may have done differently. Great advice. The prior shots are done and gone. One frame at a time. Your so right.

    I don't every look at my score if I am doing poor or extremely well, just to stay out of my head. If I miss a spare I get mad at my self for about 2 seconds. Then I say that frame is behind me. Then when I get on the approach I line up get my hand under the ball and tell my self elbow tucked follow through. The other day in practice during open bowl I started a new game by 2 frames before I even realized I rolled 234.
    Baby powder in the face? That is funny. I would like to hear some more funny quarks from other peoples leagues or some unofficial house rules. The big thing at our house is don't leave the five pin and if you do you best not miss the spare. If you hang a single 5 pin and leave it every ones hand goes up in the air. Then if you miss the spare anyone with a hand up you owe a beer too. Knock on wood this year I have not had to buy any beer and I could easily drink 3 or 4 a night for free if I wanted. You can tell everyone to piss off if you want and not partake but if you ever take a beer then you are on the hook. Most the time they buy a pitcher and set it on a table and we only make them buy up to one a night. But 14 bucks every time you miss your 5 pin I don't miss. Thank God they did not make this rule for the 10 pin.
    Then their is the old one " if you don't break a hundred you have to start the next game pants down" That is a old one but no one every backs it up.

    Art- I am new to your site and am enjoying every episode. This particular subject matter was presented so well. Sometimes the most basic concepts can be the most challenging to achieve. The mental aspect of bowling is one of those. Your commentary, along with the great graphics, especially the video clips of the two PBA champions, gives me hope that I can incorporate the "zen factor" into my bowling ... consistently. Thank You. Oh, the baby powder slap reminded me of the segments of The Soupy Sales Show and the number of pies smashed into his face. I'm sure that the reference to this ancient TV show will be beyond some of your reader's, but there are a few of us still around and still bowling.

      Im one of those who rembers soupy sales. One of the saddest moments of my life was going to a nostalgia convention and seeing soupy there almost drooling out of the side of his mouth. Signing auto graphs. Post his nbc radio years being tourtured by don imus.

    This! Thank you for the mental lesson! I had this one league where this young and powerful team called “The Re-Birth” held 1st place wire-to-wire throughout the entire league duration. Anytime their opponents or anyone else in their line of sight gutters on the very first shot of any frame, they’ll get amused and heartily shout “SURVEY SAYS: ZE-RO!” where everyone can hear them! That aside, this is an awesome reminder to just focus on what’s in front of you than around you!

      @ArtOfBowling  5 лет назад

      Yes we get a resounding you suck for that and a slap with baby powder if the do it twice in the same frame.

    I bowled in a youth tournament today, I got 682 in the first three games which was my best 3 game series , I bowled 162 in the fourth, but when it got to the fifth game I just lost it, I didn’t have the same feeling and was just mentally exhausted, I bowled a 128 and needed 7 more points to qualify for scholarships money. I just can’t help beating my self up about it, I was in first place and then I just gave it away. I feel like a failure and I could’ve done so much better. Now I feel like that opportunity will never come again, like I bowled the BEST I have ever bowled in the first three, I had a hell of a start but I lost it. Idk what to do I just can stop thinking about what I could’ve done better.
