Views & jobs of the stationary Incident Commander & the forward Tactical Supervisor 🔥

This video shows the perspectives of both the IC at a stationary command post and the tactical supervisor in a forward mobile position.
Both perspectives have both value and limitations.
🚒 At the command post, the IC benefits from a calm, controlled, noise-isolated environment that is distraction-free and well-suited to focusing on managing the fire and tracking the incident on their tactical worksheet. However, their view is limited to 1-2 sides of the incident.
👨🏻‍🚒 The tactical supervisor has the benefit of mobility and direct contact with the officers assigned to them; however, they are subject to distraction from people, noise, and hands-on tasks - making it much easier to miss something. It is also much more difficult to hear the radio, and they are not well suited to tracking companies on a command board.
In my experience, both positions are essential, and the incident benefits most when we fill BOTH roles EARLY in the fire. 💪🏼
For us, the first Chief will be the IC and remain at the stationary command post in their vehicle. The second arriving Chief takes the forward position, typically assigned as a division supervisor to the fire floor or wherever else has the most challenges.
