  • Over 8,000 games were released on Steam last year, so you need to stand out... and striking art is the key to standing out! Let's look at some beautiful (but simple) looking indie games, and analyze how we can apply those visual principles to your game.
This is a excerpt from my online school Game Dev Unlocked, where I teach people how to start, finish, and market their indie games. If you like this video, you'll probably like the school! Learn more at www.gamedevunlocked.com

Between you and Thomas Brush ive finally started working on my game. You play Syfur a black cat with orange eyes. The opening scene you awake in this dark halloween inspired forest no clue of who you are or where you came from. As you traverse through these forest levels you find the Great pumpkins who will tell you about who you were and where your going. Let's just say you'll learn your not just a cat and something terrible has happened in your life. There will be enemies and bosses leading to a massive conclusion as you take this journey about finding your true self.
Its a work in progress 😃

I think gameplay is king, but the magic is in the presentation of the game. Graphics, or should I say, art direction does matter, and I don't like the notion of disregarding strong visual design over gameplay. It is why something like Splatoon feels more inviting and fun than a standard shooter. The concept instantly grabs me. It is highly polished and is insanely vibrant with great catchy music. Nintendo understands this very well.
I remember crying when I watched Ori and the Will of the Wisp trailer. I've never seen anything so beautiful and got me obsessed with visuals in gaming. Visuals create a strong emotion. Back in the day I remember picking out my first Gameboy Pocket game (Castlevania Legends) due to the game art itself. I knew nothing about the series prior.
I've been really into games with more hand painted textures and Pixel art with 3D lately. Stuff like "Sifu" and "The Last Night" are gorgeous to me. Also, the Playdate got me really into monochromatic pixel art. I appreciate photorealism when done well, but often times it has a bad case of the uncanny valley and doesn't offer the same charm or emotions.

Having a color pallet of only 256 colors and only being able to use 13 of them in 4 groups with one being a background color, for that you have to get creative, and so that’s what I did, I made a color palette within the color palette, to give my game a sorta comic book ish color style, you can’t really tell that music because all the art is pixel art made for the nes but I tried my best

I'm a creative writer looking ahead for when I'm aspiring over multiple platforms of media. Books, movies, games.
Full Sail was the right choice.
And I start in 2 days!!
Just imagine a game that takes inspiration from undertale, Heluva boss, and even that nerdy webcomic homestuck!!
As a Christian I believe that if I combine all of these aspectual groundbreaking stories. Then I will create something that will change the world. To something more loving, like what undertale attempted to achieve. To something unjudgemental, and appreciative of other's beautiful gifts.... like heluva boss, Hazbin hotel, zoophobia and the likes of Vivienne's outstanding work!!
And something personal, like the characters in the game itself. Homestuck to many is a confusing one to say the least, but it's God tiers? I have studied extensively. And have not only heavily grown from these resources, but it has made me into a person that I could be proud of!
One that can take the status quo of the world, smash it to bits, pick up the pieces and put it back together again into something someone, anyone could be inspired by!

another great example is dead static drive, this game has a toon shaded feel with sharp art style, but many other games too use this same art style, the difference is, this dude gives a pink touch in the post process, so the colours feel monotonous and the whole game feels like a post apocalyptic game, I think the dev did a great job because the art style is quite distinctive and I at least remember the game whenever I see that art style

So when are you going to give us a game dev tutorial series like Blender Guru, or any recommendations to learn unity from scratch??????
