First of all, guys, thank you for watching! A lot of people noticed some mistakes in my scripts and offered their help. I really appreciate that and I've recently found a person who will be able to check these. Starting from the following video, I hope, everything is going to be better. Also, this series is coming to it's end and people ask me about the next series/game/movie I'll take. That's kinda secret right now, but I'll let you know pretty soon :) I've added my twitter account, you can always subscribe if you want to. twitter.com/GrandGamingChan I won't be tweeting several times a day, but sometimes I'll be posting some important information and it's an easy way for you to contact me and me to contact you :)
Let me clarify a few things about Downpour: 1. VATRA was a new studio, but the developers were all skilled developers with 10+ years of experience coming mostly from IS. Certainly not "noobies". 2. There were 2 main reasons why Konami gave SH to this studio. First, SH was already dying and Konami wanted to try something new. And second, they had VERY limited budget and VATRA was the only studio willing to do it with such a budget. 3. Yes the game wasn't good even though Konami had 90% control over everything that was created or added to the game. Development was a constant clash between Konami nad VATRA. Konami had their own game designers dictating the direction of the game. 4. To release this game with such a low budget, VATRA developers had to undergo more than a YEAR of constant crunch with working hours exceeding 60 hours a week.
Funny enough, this game came out in 2012, Max Payne 3 too. Both games has soundtracks made by bands: Korn and Health. I think Konami wanted to do something similar, but Rockstar won with Health's music being more tight
I paused early because you intrigued me enough to buy the game. I finished the game just now and really liked it. Now I finished your video. Thank you :)
As much as I like this game, it needed more time in development. So much potential to have been a classic installment with some refinements. Unlikely we'll ever see a remaster either.
Silent Hill Downpour was grossly underrated. In my opinion it was never even given a fair chance by much of the so called Silent Hill community let alone gamers who weren't hard core fans to begin with. I've been a Silent Hill player since the first one came out in 1999, and to this day Silent Hill 2 is still my favourite instalment within the series. Silent Hill 2 was able to just suck me in, and get me hooked. I was really invested into the weirdness of it all. Team Silent in my opinion has never been able to recreate what they did in Silent Hill 2, and even though I liked Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill the Room both never came close to the amazingly disturbing atmosphere of the second game. When Team Silent disbanded in 2005, other developers were given a go with this series and in my opinion Vatra games actually did the best job of them all. Although Downpour didn't move the series forward in terms of graphical quality, it certainly wasn't garbage or bad looking and it still was very decent overall. It had some well made environments, and many of the character models looked great. Alas some of the technical shortcomings of the Unreal 3 Engine sometimes showed ugly faces, but overall Vatra did a very good job. Many of the locations were very atmospheric, and there was always this sense of desolation and moody dread. In terms of storytelling and character development this game is in my opinion the second best in the series. Silent Hill 2 only scores better because it introduced us to most of the tropes we've come to know and love, otherwise this game would have hands down won in that department. Yet for many people this game isn't Silent Hill because it wasn't made by Team Silent.... And that's a shame because they truly miss out. I will never forget some of the amazing sections this game had to offer, and the Devils pit in my opinion is a textbook example of excellently written psychological horror executed in a very good way. Another highlight is the entire St Maria Monastery section. This game had a lot to offer, and I felt truly invested in the story it had to tell.
Is the gameplay length for the Downpour disc incredibly short ? I loved Silent Hill 1~4 and Origins, but didn't care for Homecoming and Shattered Memories at all. Downpour is the only one I haven't tried namely because of my disappointment with the two titles aforementioned. Horrible, horrible games.
ReneeNme and how was homecoming a horrible game? To me it was a good game, not a great game or an amazing game but nonetheless it was a good game, good story. Was it silent hill? IMO no, there was no psychological aspect to it, no great transitions from reality to the other world, but those don’t make it a horrible game, not feeling like it’s a silent hill doesn’t make it a horrible game, not having team silent not make it doesn’t make it a horrible game, I fail to see your well you don’t have a point!
Same,id rank downpour as my 3rd favorite before 3 and 4 and after sh2.I still hold sh1 as the best in the franchise, something about it overall and the time that it came out in my life just had an overall stronger feeling and impact on me overall then any of the other silent Hill games.i mean they all had some impact on my life but sh1 just takes the one with me on a personal level.
this game wasnt as scary as the other silent hill games, that i have to agree, but it certainly was similar to silent hill 2 in some ways, which actually made this game a lot better than the previous installments in the series such as origins and homecoming. Had it not suffered the horrible framerate issues and save related problems , this game wouldve been a 8/10 rated game atleast. i sometimes think people just ignore the gameplay and plot of this game and just say its bad cuz of its technical flaws . and thats kinda sad, honestly i really enjoed this game, and the additions of so many side quests made it eve more fun
Best out sourced silent Hill game, would've been interesting to see vatra games go at another title of the game if downpour actually sold a ton,I think they were pretty capable on hitting thier mark with thier second silent Hill game.

Courtney Sibley It's mainly because it's story, game play and execution are a mess. Here's a video that basically addresses all the criticisms people have with Downpour. ruclips.net/video/8y9hNKe93u0/видео.html
I actually enjoyed this game, however I think the problem a lot of people had with it is that it wasn't Silent Hill. It probably would have gotten better reviews if it were a stand alone game, but they passed it off as a Silent Hill. Fog was replaced by rain. Otherworld was a bit too bright. Monsters had very little to no connection to the protagonist. Not to mention the monster designs were a bit poor for a Silent Hill game.
In the best ending it is also explained that Murphy couldn't kill Napier. He attacked him, but when it came to the part that cuts out in the intro, he couldn't do it. Sewell had to finish him off. After watching I looked up something about Daniel Licht and found out he died last month of cancer. Sad to lose someone so talented who was also respectful enough to understand that the music of Silent Hill was just as important in the game as the visual atmosphere, monsters, and story. Having a long history composing for horror movies didn't hurt either.

Yeah. I really liked the OST by Daniel Licht. The track "Town Rain" is one of my favorites. The soundtrack of Downpour has a different vibe compared with the original music composer of the series, but still did the job wonderfully for this game. It's really sad that he passed away.
Ishhhhh... A link to a Twin Perfect video, seriously dude? If you want to watch a video which is more fair on this game, watch Nitro Rad review on it. He is a fan of the serie and not a fucking lunatic fanboy of the original 3 games. Also his video is not 2 hours long. Beside, I insist to say Twin Perfect are in no way reviewers or critics, not even close. They are ranters. I guess there is an audience for this type of content judging by the view count of their videos, but for a series like Silent Hill, which each experience is fairly unique for each player, I would stay the fuck away of this type of content if I were you.
It was their Downpour video that made me subscribe to their channel honestly. Very detailed and a lot of irrefutable criticisms on Downpour. Thought it was funny too. They're one of the few Silent Hill heavy channels that are actually good tbh.
It wasnt all bad as critics led me to believe. I still got the silent hill feeling. I only got the creep factor from the ribbon mission. I felt for characters I barely got to know. Most of all Murphy Pendelton got his own version of silent hill. Not blood and rust. Run down blue and wet.
Downpour isn't bad, but I wouldn't say it's better than Shattered Memories. If you're talking like classic survivor horror then I think I'd put Origins higher anyway lmao
felman87 Downpour was a fucking piece of shit, fucking framerate issues, pathetic monster design and that otherworld shit is a red ball and a waterslide. Are you FUCKING serious?
The Bogeyman bossfight was such a goddamn shame. Seriously? Three headshots and press "x" to win on HARD difficulty? The first monster encounter on EASY was harder than that, man.
I literally had to pause the video just to make this one little comment..... "Konami knows best, I guess?" *Looks at cancelled Silent Hills game, then looks at MGS zombie edition, and finally at the SH and MGS pachinko machines.* Hmmmmm.......
Grand Gaming Channel your voice is a bit on the dry side for sarcasm to really shine, it’s hard when I think how much we as humans rely on both Visual and audio cues to work stuff out, i think ied lose my mind if I went blind or Deaf.
The silent hills game was cancelled because all the orginal creators of silent Hill are back making the new game, plus after playing death stranding I am kinda glad they cancelled it,kojima is a nut job and would've ruined it even more
Does anyone else find it funny during the cake ending when pyramid head cuts the cake in half they all randomly point at it? “Yep that’s a clean cut alright” “damn is that a wusthof😉😂”
Can't believe I have just stumbled upon your channel the same day you wrap up your Silent Hill history series. I thoroughly enjoyed this summary / retrospective so thank you for putting it out. You've got a subscriber in me!
Extremely well made! Even though english isn't your first language, you transported me into the depths of the Silent Hill lore in such an engaging way. While I'm sad that this series is coming to a close, I am very excited for what you have to offer next. Thank you for your hard work!
A greatly underrated game doomed to be hated because none of the original team had anything to do with it and newbies at the helm just to make it worse. It was an honest attempt at a SH game that is probably the best of the series since 4 and at least did more right than wrong. Had it not been rushed and full of bugs, despised by fans and sold so poorly, it might have been the first of many sequels headed in the right direction, but that's a moot point now that even P.T. Was canned by Konami out of spite, the idea that we will ever see a good SH game again is a pipe dream but at least we have the memories.
U idiot silent hills wasn't cancelled out if spite,it was cancelled because the orginal creator Akira and team silent have reunited to make the next silent Hill game and after playing that mess of a game death strabd6 I am glad kojima was let go,that guy is a overrated fool
this is actually one of my favorite silent hill games the way i see it yes it has problems loading was the number one for me it couldve been my copy but the story was amazing i really dont see why some people hated it
I totally agree and always said this. downpour is one of my favourites and I've played through it so many times, i loved the atmosphere and especially the orphanage part. like how murphy is holding the bar doors telling the kid he's not the boogie man, open the door. thats what the boogie man would say. i always thought that part was really interesting haha I don't get why people dislike this game
+rodrich182 I'm happy you liked it :) but now I do not only translate, but make a whole research and add information if necessary. The last several videos were made this way. The next video will be mostly made by myself. And I also plan to add some interaction into these videos...)
Downpour is easily one of my favorites in the entire series. And yes, I own and play the "team silent 4" on the PS2 quite regularly. This game actually felt like a long awaited return to Silent Hill for me.
I'm so happy to finally watch all this videos, to get a detailed analysis of all the silent hill games. I really wanted to know about the wins and mistakes made along the series to keep those in mind while developing an indie game based in psychological horror and the scare of the unknown in my spare time, I hope to achieve the best product possible with all the things learned.
Man i just watched your hole videos about silent hill and i would love to see this on another game ahem *resident evil* your voice script are amazing bro keep up the great work ♡
Probably the SH I enjoyed the most exept for *the room*.. This one is criminally underrated, and i get it.. But this SH is sooo deep in story, endings etc.. Ill never forget the moment i found out why she made sure Murphy was tranfered.. The prison in SH and just puzzling shit together, suuuuch atmosphere its insane too, and i remember thius game scaring the shit outta 14yr old me who had just moved away from home to my first apartment! especially the mannequins.. ill never forget them.. or the first time you enter the devils pit mines… ugh that part still gets me
I really dig this! I haven't played it..yet..but, I certainly want to now! This one looks like the developers took it back to it's roots. I've been away from gaming for awhile. This looks like a good reason to get back into it. I really miss playing the Team Silent games. This has always been my favorite series but some of the newer installments just didn't look that interesting. But, this one has one thing that I have always liked with the original 4 - open exploration of the town itself! Looks very intriguing, indeed..
Perfecting timing I just started watching these videos a few days ago! I'd like to hear more of your theories on the series but besides that thanks for the recap!!!
The game would've been better had Vatra spent longer developing the script. They created this amazing backstory for Murphy - one of the best, in my opinion - but the game's present narrative meanders and feels really disjointed. More elements should've weaved into or reflected Murphy's backstory.
Hehe, is it just me ~ or at 14:51 ~ did you refer to Murphy as Henry? LoL love it!! I do this with the series all of the time! I keep referring to Harry as James! 😝♥️
I don't know if anyone knows this, but there is a Silent Hill comic book series detailing everything that happens to Anne during the events of this game. The comic book has major spoilers to those who have not played this game, and there are a couple choices that Murphy made that are canon, for example, he officially tried to save Anne from falling at 4:39 Funf fact: The postman, Howard Blackwood has been trapped in Silent Hill for a LONG time.
Triedge The Gamer It was like it was ripped straight out of Alice in Wonderland or something. Less scary more whimsical. Guess the days of abstract visuals, repressive environments that practically breath and disturbing imagery, are long gone bro
Aio Oroud And the movies ripped their otherworld off from the first game. It's lazy but at least it looks grungy in a Silent Hill way so I'm not salty. Homecoming sucked but Hell Descent was just awesome.
the timing of that gum ad...pricless.."he has some other probkems to deal with"..unicorn bust through the wall on the ad..i was like wtf does unicorn have to do with silent hill...then a lady busted out some gum and i relized it was an ad
I recently bought this game along with the HD Collection (My Ps2 is broken so I can't play the originals) and some other games at Game Stop. Decided to play it a few days ago when it started raining. That was the first Silent Hill game for and I had fun for the most part. Fighting these Bat Monsters in the caves was kinda frustrating but the rest was fine. I'll probably wait untill October and finish SH 2 & 3 before continueing tho.
Have you thought about doing like a bonus video for a one game inbetween the game series'? If so, I would like to see your take on Metal Gear Solid 2 or even Obscure, if you want something more horror themed. Either way, can't wait to see what you come up with next. Keep up, man. Love your work so far.
Great game. Still remember alot of it all these years later just by how memorable it was. Amazing story but a shame akira yamaoka wasnt doing the sound tho dexter ost creator daniel licht and korn did some cool tracks. I loved the fact the fighting felt tanky and slow since homecoming
It just occurred to me that the red black hole could be symbolic of Sewell, because when Murphy first experiences the black hole Franks voice says 'RUN', which he also says during the flash back after Sewell hits them both with his baton.
This is the strongest post-Team Silent game in my opinion. While I think the story is a bit murky and the conclusion is an absolute disaster with nothing being concrete, it provided a really great set of environments for the player to explore, and the motif of water is really interesting! The monsters (minus the Doll ) are pretty bland and to human in nature, but I love the Otherworld being completely independent from the Fog World. I wish we got to swap between Murphy and Anne though. The UV light is a really neat addition too! It's not amazing by any means, but it is stronger than Origins (which I find to be nothing but a copy + paste of the other Silent Hills), and Homecoming (which has such an absurd story, but really great environments) and Shattered Memories, which I just find very boring.
Vatra did a great job in my opinion, it was a respectful sequel to the original 4 games and I appreciate all the effort they made to ship this game, even though it has many technical flaws and the combat was wonky
I always thought the bats were representative of children, as they are found in the mines. Innocence and naïveté represented through blindness. Also representative of Murphey’s own son.
Its a decent game, I mean its a step in the right direction, it just needed more. The story is not that bad, pretty good. The enemies are not special, only 2 boss battles which are short as hell. It reminds me of the Silent Hill movie, decent but it just needed more.
It is currently 2 in the morning, all lights in the house is already out, everyone is already sleeping, and here I am watching silent hill videos, probably not a very good idea

It wasnt all bad as critics led me to believe. I still got the silent hill feeling. I only got the creep factor from the ribbon mission. I felt for characters I barely got to know. Most of all Murphy Pendelton got his own version of silent hill. Not blood and rust. Run down blue and wet.
Out of all the Western-made Silent Hills, Downpour is the best of the bunch. It comes the closest in terms of psychological scares and impact.
felman87. go watch nitro rad about downpour you will like it
Downpour isn't bad, but I wouldn't say it's better than Shattered Memories. If you're talking like classic survivor horror then I think I'd put Origins higher anyway lmao
Lol you made laugh
Troy Macdonald classic survival horror. Can't fight. GG.
felman87 Downpour was a fucking piece of shit, fucking framerate issues, pathetic monster design and that otherworld shit is a red ball and a waterslide. Are you FUCKING serious?
dude I'm loving your work man. Please do more history of the series from more horror games like fatal frame, alone in the dark
The Bogeyman bossfight was such a goddamn shame. Seriously? Three headshots and press "x" to win on HARD difficulty? The first monster encounter on EASY was harder than that, man.
I literally had to pause the video just to make this one little comment.....
"Konami knows best, I guess?"
*Looks at cancelled Silent Hills game, then looks at MGS zombie edition, and finally at the SH and MGS pachinko machines.*
Hmmmmm.......
+TheOriginalGuzzz well, apparently my sarcasm was not obvious enough))
Grand Gaming Channel
Your thick, Gutter French accent kills any connotation of sarcasm. 😉
Konami fucked us bad ... shame.. I could play silent hill Sequels til I die
You're doing amazing job, I don't even ask how much time you spend to do each episode. Thank you for what you doing.
Extremely well made! Even though english isn't your first language, you transported me into the depths of the Silent Hill lore in such an engaging way. While I'm sad that this series is coming to a close, I am very excited for what you have to offer next. Thank you for your hard work!
I just found your channel today. How lucky to get the latest video on the series just a few minutes ago :D
just found this channel and watched all of these the other day. Great timing. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
The game was very good, really good indeed,but..it will be always a Silent Hill game withou his soul,a soul called Akira Yamaoka and his Soundtrack.
Why does the protagonist look sort of like Todd Howard?
Dominus Satanas Perhaps
Buy.my.fucking.skyrim.
Fucking hell. Now i can't unsee that.
Actually the protagonist is meant to look like Tomm Hullet.
because... it just works
As a silent hill long time fan I am grateful you translated this amazing series. Thank you!
Good luck!)
Man i just watched your hole videos about silent hill and i would love to see this on another game ahem *resident evil* your voice script are amazing bro keep up the great work ♡
Another great video! So many great explanations and are very in depth. Thank you!
Probably the SH I enjoyed the most exept for *the room*.. This one is criminally underrated, and i get it.. But this SH is sooo deep in story, endings etc.. Ill never forget the moment i found out why she made sure Murphy was tranfered.. The prison in SH and just puzzling shit together, suuuuch atmosphere its insane too, and i remember thius game scaring the shit outta 14yr old me who had just moved away from home to my first apartment! especially the mannequins.. ill never forget them.. or the first time you enter the devils pit mines… ugh that part still gets me
I totally agree. 4 was my favorite too. Downpour was really good but I love them all.
Omg yesssss I've been waiting for so loong :D !
First time I came across your channel was this video... You just uploaded it and now its TWO years old! Dam
this history of the series is the best ever.. you got a cool voice nice editing and well made video respect!!
Thanks for an awesome series of videos, you've obviously put a lot of work into all of them. appreciate you dude!
I just watch all your Silent hill videos!!! great work!! Thanks
Thank you for finishing the series and doing Downpour! One of my favorites SHs behind SH2 :)
Hesh go watch nitro rad video about downpour you will like it
this is not end. one more video in this series) about films, comiсs, mobil games, p.t.
Excellent series. Excellent reviews. Excellent intros. 10/10.
I love these videos. They're very insightful. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing your thoughts!
I have been waiting for this. Thank you for making these.
Dude thank you so much for this awesome journey that takes part on silent hills world!Your videos are just amazing! you rock buddy ! Peace ^^
Dude, I've been waiting for this to come out
These are all awesome! Can't wait for the P.T. explanation! Oh..... Wait.
Hehe, is it just me ~ or at 14:51 ~ did you refer to Murphy as Henry? LoL love it!! I do this with the series all of the time! I keep referring to Harry as James! 😝♥️
Im so glad I subscribed to you, I love this stuff.
Thank you for a fantastic series! I really enjoyed watching all of these :)
I gotta appreciate that surprise party ending. Whether the game was bad or not.
I don't know if anyone knows this, but there is a Silent Hill comic book series detailing everything that happens to Anne during the events of this game. The comic book has major spoilers to those who have not played this game, and there are a couple choices that Murphy made that are canon, for example, he officially tried to save Anne from falling at 4:39
Funf fact: The postman, Howard Blackwood has been trapped in Silent Hill for a LONG time.
Late night in Ireland and now I can relax even more with this video.
The thing that helped kill this game was the terrible framerate stuttering. Pre patch it was like a slideshow.
Jay Dowg what it kill the game was the other world sucks
Triedge The Gamer. at least it has a meaning
Triedge The Gamer It was like it was ripped straight out of Alice in Wonderland or something. Less scary more whimsical.
Guess the days of abstract visuals, repressive environments that practically breath and disturbing imagery, are long gone bro
Nick bangs Elizabeth 999. but homecomings otherworld ripped off from the movie
Aio Oroud And the movies ripped their otherworld off from the first game. It's lazy but at least it looks grungy in a Silent Hill way so I'm not salty. Homecoming sucked but Hell Descent was just awesome.
Thank you very much for these awesome and pretty elaborately videos!
Despite its criticism, I really enjoyed this game, it has a lot of interesting aspects including the side quests and Murphy himself.
Thanks for this video. Really appreciate your work. It makes me understand this universe.
the timing of that gum ad...pricless.."he has some other probkems to deal with"..unicorn bust through the wall on the ad..i was like wtf does unicorn have to do with silent hill...then a lady busted out some gum and i relized it was an ad
If you ever want to review the spinoffs, definitely try to emulate the Silent Hill Orphan games, they're short but good
Silent Hill Downpour is one of my favorites and I am so glad they changed Murphy hair to brown because the golden brown did not suit him at all
Thanks for doing this!
I love Daniel Lichts music for silent hill. He managed to keep the spirit but make His own thing. Rip Daniel
"He takes a train ride and at one point it becomes not so pleasant." I died laughing.
You really should have downloaded the PC versions of SH2 and SH3. The HD Collection is absolute garbage.
Rilumai I read that not as bad as people always say after the patch and I still know the original games since I watched playthroughs of both.
The patch barely does anything. There are still hundreds of problems with the collection. But at least you've watched playthroughs of the originals.
I waited for this! Awesome work! Do other game series as well please.
yesssss!!!! been waiting for this!!!! thank u
Do the fatalframe saga
I love those games. Great idea ! Please
I was waiting for this! I'm sad it's ending though
excellent series, loved it! well done
Some people still don’t know how the town of silent hill works and it shows.
The ribbon side quest is the best. Its subtle yet horrifying. Yes the mom tied those ribbons in order to lead the girl to drawn herself.
Have you thought about doing like a bonus video for a one game inbetween the game series'? If so, I would like to see your take on Metal Gear Solid 2 or even Obscure, if you want something more horror themed. Either way, can't wait to see what you come up with next. Keep up, man. Love your work so far.
Yes! YEs! YES!. AAAWWWW YEAH!
time for another silent hill history video
Great game. Still remember alot of it all these years later just by how memorable it was. Amazing story but a shame akira yamaoka wasnt doing the sound tho dexter ost creator daniel licht and korn did some cool tracks. I loved the fact the fighting felt tanky and slow since homecoming
Oh how I enjoy your videos!
Keep up the good work man..
Damn man !!its very well explained good job:))))))))))
Im glad you finished it.. good job.. new series to explain soon? :)
Thank you so much !!! You describe everything about this beautiful game ^^
Nice job
Great vid :) I've never even heard of this one. As an autism mum though that side quest about the autistic daughter had me shocked lol It's a tough job.
Excellent series m8.
