    Passing on a two-lane highway with opposing lanes of traffic is a high-risk manoeuvre. If you misjudge and overtake incorrectly you could be involved in a head-on collision. Head-on crashes are often fatal. Due to the combined speeds of the vehicles, vehicle occupants rarely survive a head-on crash.
    And because head-on collisions often occur in rural areas, it takes a significant amount of time for emergency crews to arrive at the scene, extricate you from the wreckage, and transport injured people to the hospital. Trauma victims must be treated within an hour of incurring their injuries, otherwise their chances of survival are low.
    Two road engineering features that have been implemented in the last quarter of a century have significantly reduced the number of head-on crashes:
    1) paved shoulders on highways;
    2) passing lanes at regular intervals.
    Shoulder drop off was one of the most significant factors that caused head-on accidents. Inexperienced drivers would drop the vehicle off the shoulder of the pavement, panic, and yank the steering wheel back onto the roadways. The vehicle would shoot back onto the roadway, careen into the opposing lane of traffic and there would be a head-on crash.
    With the paving of the shoulders of roadways in combination with rumble strips, head-on crashes have been significantly reduced. Another contributing factor is GPS and cell phones. Due to improved communications, emergency crews can more quickly transport car crash victims to hospitals.
    The other contributing road engineering feature that has reduced head-on collisions is passing lanes at regular intervals - not more than 10-30 miles between passing lanes. Passing lanes allow traffic to overtake safely without entering the opposing lanes of traffic.
    In the video above, the truck that passed risked a dangerous manoeuvre for little gain. After 30 minutes of driving the truck didn't gain a whole lot of distance. And in the 47 kilometres that we travelled south along highway #97, there were 4 passing lanes; therefore, we were never more than 10 minutes from a passing lane at any given time. And the traffic flow that day was 110kph (68mph), allowing for an average speed of 100kph (62mph).
    Driving farther in a day for a commercial driver is not about attaining higher rates of speed, but attaining a higher daily average speed. In other words, a constant speed for the duration of the day will get you more overall distance at the end of the day.
    Finally, for commercial drivers, you need to remember that you are setting an example, and risking a head-on crash when you're only 8 minutes from a passing lane is not prudent.
    Good luck on your road test!

      Wtf that sounds like a nightmare. We only have to do the test once. Even though you obviously become a better driver over time, the bad habits you pick up make it harder to pass the the test. Why mostly people who learn to drive from driving school and then straight to test fair better than those who have been driving for longer but learned outside.

    Speeding in town or with others on the road doesn't pay because you'll just arrive at the red light a few seconds earlier than the car you've just passed a few minute earlier. It's not worth the fuel cost and wear and tear on your engine.

      Hi Angel Alvizu - thank you for your reply.ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html The fundamentals will always improve your overall driving. And as you become more comfortable with the primary controls, work to increase your speed more and more as you go around corners. Be sure to look through the corner and accelerate slightly - if you power through the corner, you'll have more control. Think of racing - the drivers slow before the corner and then accelerate through. They also start high, go low, and end high to work to straighten out the corner. Let us know how it goes. Great video ! I was recently driving from Toronto to Ottawa on the 401 which has posted speed limits of 100 km/h but traffic flow was 120 km/h - 130 km/h. While I was consistently capping my speed at 120 km/h which is the tolerance limit before being pulled over to avoid fines, I had to exceed that to 130 km/h while passing trucks. My question is when I am passing a truck at 130 km/h just to keep up with traffic flow, is there any chance of being pulled over and if so, justify to the OPP that I was avoiding tailgating and had to pass the truck at 'highway average speeds" of 130 km/h to avoid staying in the passing lane for too long ?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Venky - thank you for your comment and query. First, if traffic flow is 130 on the 401, it is unlikely that you're going to be pulled over. However, if an ornery police officer decides to pull you over, you are still doing 30kph above the speed limit. You have little if any legal recourse. My suggestion is to just stay at 120kph and pass the trucks without speeding up - it's better for fuel economy too. The real reason head-on collisions are so often fatal is the combination of speeds. When you combine two vehicles traveling an average of 100kph/62mph, it's like hitting a brick wall at 200kph/124mph. Most high-speed highway head-ons are going to be an instant fatality.

    Why is it OK to exceed the maximum speed LIMIT just because others are? I was always taught to do what is right, even if others are doing wrong and not to give into peer pressure....especially when higher rates of speed can increase the likelihood of death in the event of a collision?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +6

      Hi whydoyoucare27 - thank you for your comment and excellent query. Unfortunately, the question that you pose is complicated and does not lend itself to an easy answer. I believe it was one of the questions that motivated my PhD dissertation and research. First, posted speed limits are not set according to fact: these are set according to professional opinion and past experience. I've been on many roads that the posted speed limit is too high and there is no possible way a driver could drive that fast. And the somewhat random setting of speed limits is proven by the fact here in British Columbia that the government recently raised the speed limits on the main highways from 100km/hr to 120km/hr. And the other issue is policing speeding - that is an enormous task. So police know there is a tolerance to the posted speed limits. Thus I'm not sure it's OK, but I do know that is safer to drive with the flow of traffic, which as you stated is often 10-15km/hr (5-10mph) above the posted speed limit. On final point - it is injury and maiming that are problematic and make driving more dangerous in this day and age. As I said, it's a complicated question which much ink has been spilled. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Who would you say is at fault?......Vehicle A is traveling behind, slow moving while hazards are on, Vehicle B on a two lane highway. Vehicle A decides to pass Vehicle B when road indicates that it is legal and safe to do so. While Vehicle A is passing and overtaking Vehicle B a third vehicle , Vehicle C, is reducing speed and closing the gap between both Vehicle B and C. This makes it impossible for Vehicle A to safely maneuver back in front of Vehicle B. While still over in the left lane passing, Vehicle A then decides to pass and overtake Vehicle C as well. Just as Vehicle A gets the front end of it's vehicle past the front end of Vehicle B, Vehicle B decides to cross over into Vehicle A to attempt a left turn into a side street causing a collision into which Vehicle A was pushed off the road. My questions are...."Who actually had the right-of-way? Does Vehicle A have an established lane once the pass/overtaking has started?

  • @merrillgehman3564
    @merrillgehman3564 2 года назад

    I noticed in your Vedic on passing on a two lane road, you followed the truck after he made his two passes at 20 km above the posted speed limit. Most experianced commercial drivrs can not allow themself to go that much above the posted speed limit because of the risk of speeding citation. I personally don’t allow myself more than 2 mph, or 3 km above the posted limit, to defend myself from law enforcement people. A citation for speeding can sometimes be more damaging to a drivers wellbeing than a none injury vehicle crash. These citations in some instances are made by individuals who really don’t understand driving unlike you and many experianced drivers do. Therefore we must defend ourselves very precisely from the habits of putting in experianced drivers with badges on our highways, and maybe it’s even safer for us all to boot.

    I have a turbo S so passing cars is no problem for me.

      Hi Rouge Ninja - it might be my friend if the guy coming toward you also has a turbo S and you misjudge the gap. Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Overtaking is not be a dangerous undertaking if done swiftly. There is nothing more dangerous then someone overtaking at less than five kilometres an hour faster than the vehicle he or she is overtaking.

    Pff, now I feel bad for living in a third world country which roads don't have those "new" safety features. The "shoulders" are not paved and I have never even heard of "passing lanes" until now.

    Kilometers are more precise than miles, I have no idea why north americans use miles

      Hi jairo zetino - You're misinformed my friend. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's wrong. Like a standardized alphabet, metric is easier to learn because everything is multiple of 10s. Imperial measurements....not so much. But just in case you're wondering, there's 5280ft in a mile or 1.62137km in a mile. 🙃 All the best, Cheers Rick

    Lol teaching people how to overtake large trucks on a passing lane? Lame. Try teaching people how to pass huge trucks on a two way highway
