As a PhD student, I kept reading more on other paradigms, yet when I read pragmatism I realized this was my true worldview. Real world application of my research is my goal when I look at what I am working on in this study. Another excellent video, thank you.
Thank you for sharing! It’s amazing when we find a paradigm that really resonates with our own worldview. Pragmatism’s focus on real-world applications can be so empowering, especially when it aligns with the goals of your research. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Hello Dr Yardley, Thank you for the informative and useful videos. I have a request. I'm doing DBA, I often get criticised for being discriptive and not critical. How can I be more critical in my writing .Could you please make a video on it. Thank you
Thank you dr Elizabeth for your wonderful cultural channel. I have great feeling Iam as real university student. Iam learning new idiom and new information with every video you are posting. Pragmatism is philosophical tradition that views language and thought as tool for predication , problem solving, action, rather than describing, representing or mirroring reality. Pragmatists contend that most philosophical topics such as nature of knowledge, language, concept , meaning, belief , science best viewed in terms of their practical uses and successes . Pragmatism began in USA 1870s . It’s origin often attributed to philosophical Charles sanders Perice , William James , John Dewey . 1877 peirce described in his pragmatic maxim “ consider effects of objects of your conception “, then , your conception of those effects is who be of your conception of object . Pragmatism aim is emphasis’ on action rather thought . Types of pragmatism are strict analytic , neo classical. Key elements of pragmatism focusing on human experience, suspicion of abstract , idea , commitment to solving problems through experiments. I hope you like my synopsis. Best wishes for you your loved ones.
Thank you so much for sharing this thoughtful synopsis on pragmatism! It’s wonderful to hear that you’re finding the videos helpful and engaging. I’m glad to have you as part of this learning journey. Wishing you all the best!
Great explanations. It has never been clearer. Thank you. I read Morgan’s (Integrating qualitative and quantitative methods, a pragmatic approach) book on it but yours is concise and comprehensive 😅
Thank you so much for this introduction, very useful and very much appreciated. Is it possible to mix pragmatism with other paradigms? How would describe/ explain such a paradigm mix/ union? For example Pragmatism with a “pinch of interpretivism” (or critical realism)?!? Sounds interesting, how can you make that work? Could you possibly do a follow up, a deep dive with more concrete examples including health & education?
Great question! Pragmatism can indeed be blended with other paradigms like interpretivism or critical realism, especially in mixed-methods research. The key is to maintain a focus on 'what works' pragmatically, while using insights from interpretivism or realism to deepen understanding of context or structures. I love the idea of a follow-up video with practical examples in health and education-I'll definitely add that to my list!
Great! It's a fantastic approach to research that aims for practical, real-world impact. Let me know if you have any questions about it, happy to help!
I have been debating whether I'm a pragmatist, interpretivist or critical realist recently as I have just begun my PHD! I think I might be a pragmatist as really I'm only interested in what works and that the work I undertake is beneficial to communities. It's going to be interesting explaining my stance for sure if this is only seem as an approach rather than an epistemology. I tend to agree with critical realists about these different layers of the observable, the unseen and the structures but I am not considering all of these aspects in my research. Could I be a leaning towards critical realism pragmatist? Does such a concept exist? My masters used mainly qualitative methods but I feel the gaps it showed are best addressed using qualitative and I'm then using this data (thematic analysis), coupled with what is currently out there ( systematic review of randomised control trial evidence) and co-designing an intervention with young people because I feel they are not heard. I think this is pragmatist? Thanks for your videos! I am glad I found these. They are really helpful.
Thank you so much for your comment! It sounds like you’re engaging deeply with your philosophical stance - which is fantastic, especially at the beginning of your PhD journey. It does indeed sound like pragmatism aligns well with your goals, especially given your emphasis on what works and ensuring your research benefits communities. Pragmatism is flexible, allowing you to select methods that best address the practical needs of your study. The approach you're describing, which combines thematic analysis, systematic review, and co-design, is very much in line with a pragmatic stance, as it’s all about finding real-world solutions and creating impact. As for being a “critical realist pragmatist” - while this isn’t a widely recognised term, research paradigms are not rigid boxes, and it’s quite common for researchers to blend ideas. If you find value in critical realism’s layered understanding of reality but choose not to focus on all these aspects, you might simply acknowledge that critical realism influences your thinking, while pragmatism is your guiding approach. It sounds like you’re building a robust foundation that respects both perspectives without being strictly bound to either. I’m glad the videos have been helpful, and best of luck as you continue developing your stance!

You’re very welcome ☺️
I’m so pleased it was helpful! 🤓
I used pragmatism as it is what works for me in my mixed methods action research
That's great! Pragmatism is an excellent fit with action research!

Not sure,yet!
It's one to add to the shortlist, always good to keep your options open! Let me know if you have any questions about paradigms, happy to help :-)
