    Could one argue that CR is neither a critique of power nor Social Justice positionality, despite its focus on social systems and use of the word critical? You have a very nice way of explaining these topics, thanks for making them.

    • @DegreeDoctor
      @DegreeDoctor 3 дня назад

      Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m glad you’re finding the videos helpful. You’re right-critical realism (CR) is often misunderstood because of the word "critical" in its name. CR isn’t inherently about critiquing power or taking a social justice stance; rather, it’s a philosophy of science that focuses on understanding the structures and mechanisms that generate observable events in the social world. While CR can be applied in ways that critique social systems, it doesn’t necessarily align with any particular political or social justice agenda. Its main aim is to provide a deeper understanding of the complexities within social systems. I hope this helps clarify things a bit!

    What you described in the video is essentially how I use it: to brainstorm, summarize long documents to see if they are worth analyzing, and to check my thinking. Having it write anything for you is a bad idea, especially if you have better-than-average writing skills; most grad students are likely to have good writing skills.

    • @DegreeDoctor
      @DegreeDoctor 3 дня назад

      Thanks for sharing your approach! It sounds like you’re using ChatGPT in a very thoughtful and strategic way, which is exactly what I was aiming to convey in the video. I completely agree - using it for brainstorming, summarising, and checking your thinking can be incredibly helpful without crossing any ethical lines. And you’re right, relying on it to write for you isn’t the best idea, especially when honing your own writing skills is such an important part of the grad school journey. I’m glad to hear you’re finding a balance that works for you!

    hello, if I am writing for my transfer, which one should I start with first, my Literature Review or the introduction chapter?

    • @DegreeDoctor
      @DegreeDoctor 7 дней назад

      Hello! Great question. When writing for your transfer, it’s often a good idea to start with your Introduction chapter. The introduction sets the context for your research, outlines your aims, and provides an overview of what’s to come, which can make it easier to write your Literature Review afterward. The Literature Review will build on the foundation you’ve set in the introduction, allowing you to dive deeper into the existing research and show how your work fits into the broader academic conversation. Good luck with your transfer, and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!

    How do Research Questions fit with Aims and Objectives? Do we need to have all three?

    • @DegreeDoctor
      @DegreeDoctor 7 дней назад

      Great question, Patty! Research questions, aims, and objectives all play different but connected roles in your dissertation. Your aims outline what you hope to achieve with your research, while your objectives break down the specific steps you’ll take to achieve those aims. Research questions are the specific queries you’re investigating, and they should align closely with your aims and objectives. So yes, having all three is important-they help guide your research process and ensure everything is focused and coherent. If you need more detail, feel free to ask!

      @@DegreeDoctor Thank you Dr Yardley. Do you have a video on Research Questions? I'm doing the introduction, what will come first please? With your answer above i'm thinking aims, objectives, and then research questions, though instinctively i've place the boarder Research Questions first? I have as an aim...to explore and construct an explanation of ..... and objectives to understand processes, impacts etc. Thank you

    • @DegreeDoctor
      @DegreeDoctor 7 дней назад

      You’re very welcome, Patty! I don’t have a specific video on research questions at the moment, but I’m glad to help here. In your introduction, it’s often helpful to start with your aims-this sets the stage for what your research is trying to achieve. Then, you can outline your objectives, which explain the steps you’ll take to reach that aim. Finally, your research questions can follow, as they flow naturally from your aims and objectives, showing exactly what you’ll be investigating. Yes - starting with the broader questions, then honing in to become more specific is a very sensible strategy. If you need any more guidance, feel free to ask. You’re doing great!

    Thank you for this explanation! School psychology doc student here and I am doing a mixed methods (survey and interviews) approach to understand the paraprofessional experience working in special education in Pennsylvania public schools. APA does not require qualitative courses nor considers them as an alternative to statistics requirements, so I had to take a general qualitative research course outside of my program. As helpful as it was, it definitely doesn't feel like it was enough compared to my 3+ years of grad stats! So thank you again for this video and the examples!!

      Thank you so much for your comment! It sounds like you’re doing really important work with your mixed methods approach-understanding the paraprofessional experience in special education is such a valuable area of research. I can imagine it’s challenging to balance the qualitative aspects with your extensive background in stats, especially given the limited qualitative training available in some programs. @DegreeDoctor 12 дней назад

      Hi! Thanks for reaching out. At the moment, I’m not taking on new clients for one-on-one support, but I’m happy to offer some guidance here. Yes, you can definitely generate your own research questions from your aims and objectives. Start by breaking down your objectives into specific, actionable questions that will help you achieve your research aims. Think about what you need to find out or explore in order to meet each objective. For example, if one of your objectives is to understand a particular phenomenon, your research question could ask, ‘What are the key factors influencing this phenomenon?’ This approach will ensure that your research questions are directly aligned with your overall goals. I hope this helps, and good luck with your research!

    • @DegreeDoctor
      @DegreeDoctor 12 дней назад

      Hi! Thanks for your question. Choosing an interpretivist approach doesn’t necessarily mean you must use a conceptual framework over a theoretical framework. A conceptual framework is often used to outline the specific concepts and relationships you're exploring, especially if your study is more exploratory or focused on understanding experiences. A theoretical framework, on the other hand, is based on existing theories that guide your analysis. Many PhD projects actually include both frameworks, so it’s a good idea to discuss this with your supervisor to see what fits best for your study. I hope this helps!

    Leaving the feedback for at least 24 hours is always very useful, during the publication process as well. I use this strategy all the time and every time I receive reviewers’ comments from a journal. I usually read through the lengthy comments, make sure I know the deadline to respond, then leave it for at least one day or several days before I start to address each comment and revise my manuscript accordingly. Most of the time, the comments are lengthy because the reviewers gave concrete suggestions on how to revise and improve the manuscript.

    • @DegreeDoctor
      @DegreeDoctor 13 дней назад

      Thank you for sharing your strategy! That’s a really effective way to handle feedback, especially during the publication process. Taking the time to let the comments sit for a bit before diving into revisions can really help in approaching them with a clear and calm mindset. It’s great to hear that this method has been helpful for you, particularly when dealing with detailed reviewer comments. Your approach is a fantastic example of how to make the most out of constructive feedback!
