- Trucking Trouble!!! Montana Farming 2021
In today's video, I am trucking barley in our tandem truck almost to the Canadian border. I am learning to drive this big truck and my Dad is giving me lessons. I have an agricultural exemption to drive our farm semi-trucks. Truck driving is challenging work and I have a lot of respect for those who drive the big rigs. Our barley is going to a commercial grain elevator to be sold because we need storage room in our grain bins at our Montana farm. Our 2021 wheat harvest will be starting soon and we are getting everything prepared. As I am driving I see Darcy in his red semi-truck on the freeway. He is also hauling barley to the elevator near the Canadian border. At the elevator, the tandem truck stalls out and won't start. It took my Dad about an hour to get it running again. I thought I broke it!!! After talking to Freightliner on the phone Dad figured out what was wrong with it. I'm very happy I didn't break the truck! I did stall it though! I make mistakes and I try to learn from them, but it is a big learning curve. I'm very grateful my Dad will take the time to teach me how to drive these big trucks. Also, don't forget to send me a picture of your Kate's Ag tote bag so I can post it on Instagram and Facebook!! I would love to see your photos!!!! I hope you enjoy my video and thank you so much for watching!!!

My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.
Your dad would terrify me as a driving instructor, but he maker your videos funny you are a great double act…another great video

Kate, you are an inspiration to many folks. You can do anything that you want to do and do it well. It is a joy watching you drive the Freightliner on the highways of Montana. I imagine you turn many heads when folks see you driving a big rig. Maintain your positive attitude and keep smiling.
Thank you for your kindness and great encouragement!!!!!!! I really appreciate them.
When I was in my early 20's, 50 years ago, I spent part of a summer working on a hay ranch in Wisdom, Montana. Great people, and spectacular country. The family set their clocks
to match the needs of the haying. There was no time zone, except "hay time."
Kate, you are a marvel, and so is your dad. You are going to have a great life.
Thank you for your kind words and great story!
You’re learning so many valuable skills which will make you so successful. You’re father is a wonderful teacher
Thank you for your kind words!!! You made my day!
I respect your father a lot, he loves a lot of work and teaches you how to drive. Greetings to your father

Love all your videos Kate, you must be great to know, so bubbly and happy and a real tonic for people! Best wishes from England.
Thank you for your kindness!
It can be overwhelming learning to drive and also being the instructor. Your dad has the patience of a saint and eventually you will be a natural at it
Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I may make a suggestion, Kate. As a learning driver you are vulnerable to making mistakes that could break a truck down. Learning to drive 2 different trucks simultaneously puts two trucks at that risk, so if I may suggest sticking with just the Freightliner tandem featured here for now for a couple reasons: A) It is smaller and you don't have to worry about a trailer; B) Because it is of smaller capacity, if you were to cause a breakdown, it's less hauling capacity that your dad would temporarily lose for his business. On the other hand, with a tractor-trailer, if your dad has a spare truck sitting around, he could simply put the spare truck on the same trailer and still have that hauling capacity in the event of a breakdown; C) Trying to learn to drive 2 different trucks at the same time may cause confusion with differing controls between the two trucks if you aren't thinking (you might forget which truck has which controls and/or where they are located and hence reach for the wrong control in the wrong truck or reach for the right control in the wrong spot in the right truck!). Just a little friendly advice from a viewer and something to think about. I like that you are learning to do this to be of more service to your dad and aren't scared to do so!
Thank you for your great advice!!!!!
Hi Kate, hello from San Diego California. You and your dad make a very entertaining and interesting team. I saw that you were driving on interstate 15 just a few miles from Canada, guess what, I was driving on the same highway today but about 1,500 mile south of you just a few miles north of Mexico. I congratulate you for being so brave and willing to learn but be thankful you're doing it on a lonely highway in Montana and not in Southern California with a million other trucks and cars Zooming past you all doing about 70-90 miles an hour. I love all your videos, it's nice to see your super pretty face, your bright smile and cheerful enthusiasm on the screen. Take care, and stay safe.
Thank you so much for your great story and wonderful kindness!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it's amazing to see a young person so involved and doing it all. I bet dad is so proud. He probably brags on you to all his buddies when you aren't around. Cheer's!
Thank you for your kindness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very impressive Kate. You’re getting better. You’re dads doing a good job instructing you.
Just hang in there it only gets better. Stay safe.
I’m ready to see what y’all have in store for next week.
Thank you so much for your kindness and great encouragement!!!!!!!!!! I really appreciate it.
Its awesome watching a young lady interested in all the parts of trucking and farming. And a beautiful young lady at that. Keep up the great job. Love watching you run the trucks. Next you need to learn on a stick shift. Great job

Thank you for your great question. I really am grateful that my Dad takes the time to show me things and spend time with me!!!
I love that your dad is teaching you how to drive truck at such a young age. He does get a little excited, but you don't get flustered and handle it very well! i love your "pep". very refreshing.
Thank you for your wonderful kindness and great encouragement!!! You made my day!
Many years ago, I used to train new drivers. I understand the feeling of not being in control. It can be scary, even if the new driver behind the wheel is doing a good job.
Love that you don't quit! Another great video, Kate. Thanks!
Thank you so much for your kind words and great encouragement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's so scary the 1st time driving a car with a clutch let alone a Freightshaker / Freightliner you are an inspiration to every young woman in America during WW2 it was Rosie the Riveter in 2021 its Kate the Freight Shaker look out erverone.

Good for you Kate, pulled it off in the end - brave gal you are. Many guys can't even drive those size trucks. And your delight when you saw Darcy on the road,.. that is so darn sweet. Don't ever change that authenticity about you. Good hanging out with you on your videos - very down to earth.

Good job Kate driving the Freightliner truck. The more you drive the more you learn. You are a good person.☺️☺️☺️❤️❤️
Thank you for your kind words and great encouragement!
I insisted on teaching both of my kids to drive on a stick. It makes you much more in tune with your vehicle. Now my daughter zips around in her 2005 Jeep 6-speed TJ and my son in his 87 YJ. I’ve got a ‘15 JKU. You’re doing a great job, Kate. Truly an inspiration. Keep it up. 😉
Thank you for your wonderful story and kindness!!!!!!!!!!!!! You made my day!!!
Kate, as I've mentioned before you can see how interesting it would be to coordinate it all together when first driving if you were using a standard transmission vs that autoshift. So what age does one have to be in Montana to legally drive a tandem or semi with the farm exemption and not have a licensed adult riding along or put another way are you old enough now to drive it legally on your own ?
Thank you for your great question. I think you have to be 14 or 15 with the farm exemption. This is for farming families really who have the children helping out on with farm hauling. We can get a driver's license at 15 here.
@@KatesAg You may have to question the licensing office to get the official age perhaps. Saskatchewan and Manitoba have some farm exemptions but not here in Alberta so we have to follow the commercial guidelines even though our trucks are farm plated. To get a typical passenger vehicle licence here its 14 for learners and then the actual license is age 16. But a tandem and certainly a semi one has to be 18 to get the drivers license and in fact can't legally drive these larger trucks even as a learner until one is 18.

The best advice I can give a new driver is: Never become complacent in driving. Remember your alphabet
A Always
B Be
C Carefull
Everything else is practice.
That's the sage advice from 42 years as a driver. Be safe and good fortune.
Thank you so much for your wonderful and kind words and advice!!!!
I appreciate your leaving in those "dad moments" when he is giving on-the-spot truck driving lessons. These videos are riotous fun. Ahhhhh, I recall those "dad moments" when I was a kid assisting my dad with all manner of house and cars maintenance. Why did it always seem that HE was the tool getter and I was the fixit applier? He was a clever evil genius!

The truck has extra wheels. Is that because you have them fall off?? Breakdown...Kate-Astrophe again!!

Your dad needs to back off and let you drive unless he see’s something not right. My trainer let me drive with no problem unless I hit a gear wrong but I always listened to my engine and knew when to shift.dad back off and let her drive you keep distracting her .
Thank you for watching my video and your suggestion!!!!!

Hi Kate
You are doing well driving that truck, especially with the clutch. I drive fully automatic trucks in Scotland & used to work on farms as a teenager so like your vlogs. My brother once went over to the USA & worked on a combine team one summer as it worked it’s way north. He liked one of your combine vlogs.
Keep up the vlogs & keep smiling.
Thank you for your kind words and great story!!!!
Great job Kate and Thank you guy's stay safe out there
Thank you so much for your kindness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
While looking at my toast this morning I started picturing Darcy planting and trucking, Uncle Chris swathing, Kate combining, and Dad capturing it all on drone. Well done, Kate.
LOL!!! Thank you for your great and encouraging comment!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope your toast was delicious!!!
Tremendous the amount of heavy machinery you can drive well at your age ,u have brilliant mentors they should be very proud of you ,the first time driving any new machinery is daunting but to do it on camera as well RESPECT ❤️

I like how you Incorporated the fashion part of your channel name in this video. With the pink toolbox and the fuschia colored duffle and blue handbag.
Thank you so much for your great and observant comment Mr. Hollar!!
Great to see you came to Funburst again!!!! I sympathize with the truck break down. We have several tandems and semi trucks and every year at 2 or 3 of them go down.
Thank you so much for your kind words and great story!!! I appreciate them!!!!
I could tell you have a lot more confidence driving the truck now Kate. And maybe it is my imagination but your dad really seems a lot calmer when you are driving now too. Guess you will know you got it down when he takes a nap along the way . Keep up the good work and keep cool !
Hi Mr. Kapp!! LOL hahahaha I'm not sure my dad will ever take a nap with me driving!!! Thank you for your kind words and great encouragement!!!!!!!!!!
Hello Kate, great job again...just be patient, the experience is coming from alone by the time. It reminds me at the time, when i made the truck licence. But i made it in the army and it's much more intense than in a civil driving school. I remember one day they let us maneuver the whole day with the old mercedes-truck and trailer forward and backward....lol....but it was just learning by doing. You're doing a great job. God bless you and your family. Best wishes from Bavaria, Germany.
Hello from Montana! Thank you so much for your kind words and wonderful story!!!
You are doing a very great job keep it up girl thumbs up to you woman
Hello Kate . Your dad even made me nervous . I'm glad I always drove a manual transmissioned trucks , the first one was about when I was 16 years old . A 13 speed transmission was the hardest for me to learn .
I mostly drove a 10 speed & I didn't use the clutch unless I was starting or stopping ; floating the gears . You can do it Kate .
Hi Mr. Carlton! LOL! Thank you so much for your great story and kind words!!!!

Merci beaucoup pour votre gentillesse!!!!
I very much enjoy your videos, watching you learn how to do all the things on the farm. Your mind and heart are on the land. This is a very good for you to be. For a beginner, you do things well. Your dad trusts you. I admire that he is firm with you, but never raises his voice. Please continue with what you are doling. Pretty soon, you will be doing, or able to do, most of the farm work. And by the way, learn how to adjust your seat and mirrors on the the truck. It will be easier to handle the clutch if you don't have to stretch out so far. Be well.
Thank you so much for your kind words, great advice and wonderful encouragement!!!!
My favorite farm girl really proud of your abilities
Thank you so much Mr. Carmody for your kindness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love your enthusiasm so much!
It’s so innocent.
Try driving around your yard sometime and practice some tight maneuvering between some sticks on the ground. You will be amazed how much you will get better.

I thank you for your noble work which provides food for human beings, 😉😊👍
Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate them.
Another great vid! Have fun,be safe!
Thank you so much for your kindness!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Hello Kate, great to see you driving the truck.
If I may give you some advice, you have a large farm yard where you can practise in, try the clutch and (park) brakes as much as you can, put some pilons (traffic cones) or buckets in the yard and try to make turns, forward and backward turns, you will see you learn much quicker, it becomes a second nature.
Hi from the Netherlands. 😊
Hello from Montana! Thank you so much for your great advice and kind words!!
Well Kate you gained some more experience. Glad you stalled where you did. I stalled mine at a red light in 2 lanes of traffic. Yep. There I sat. Lol. Maybe you can have your dad show you just exactly what he did to make it start. Might come in handy someday. As always I enjoyed your video. Good job on the clutch let out too. You're coming right along fine.
Thank you so much for your kind words!!!! Wow I can't imagine stalling at a light in so much traffic!!! We don't have any traffic in Montana!!! I appreciate your great encouragement too!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't be angry, but when i saw how you press the clutch when moving and standing, it's a good thing i didn't fall off the chair laughing.
Good job Kate, I learned to drive a truck with my dad as well👏
Thank you so much for your awesome story and kindness!!!!!!
Hi little Kate, how are you? You had a big problem with the truck, but your dad was able to find the solution. You learn and it is by making mistakes that we learn, that you understood it. Good sunday to you and your dad!
Thank you for your great comment and kindness!!!!!!!!
Awesome job Kate😃
Thank you for your kind words!!!!
If that's an SAMT gearbox the same as what we use to have here in the UK on the old ERF's it was an Eton twin spliter box and I believe it was quite straight forward to convert it back to full manual stick. Great video. If you select to shift up or down a gear and then have to clutch, the engine revs up and down trying to match a gear. Lol
Thank you for the info and your kindness!
You learn fast Kate... nice job
Thank you so much for your kindness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
