Your assessment of the Passport is spot on, David. We had a '16 Pilot Touring that we purchased in August of 2015. It was a fabulous vehicle, probably the best I've owned in what is now 55 years of purchasing new vehicles. We needed the room to haul grandkids & the 7 passenger Pilot worked well for us. When we decided it was time to trade 6 years later, we no longer needed a 7 passenger vehicle, but wanted to stay with roughly the same hauling capacity. The only SUV we even considered at the time was a new Passport. No one else had anything comparable. Our '21 Passport Elite is a fantastic SUV. It is essentially identical to the Pilot, but 6" shorter with more luggage space behind the rear seats than the Pilot & nearly as much luggage room with the rear seats folded down. It surpasses the qualities of our Pilot and has been a great stablemate to our '15 Subaru Forester Touring, (another great little SUV) In July this year we gave our Forester to one of our daughters & bought a new '23 RAV4 Limited Hybrid. My goodness, what a fantastic vehicle. I truly believe we now own 2 of the finest vehicles in our price category that money can buy. You mentioned that the new Pilot is a better buy than the Passport. That may well be, IF you need to haul more than 5 people. However, the Passport still fills a need that no one else offers. I wish Toyota would follow suit now that they have the Grand Highlander, they should remake the Highlander into a 5 passenger vehicle to compete with the Passport. If they would do that & offer a true off road variant, they would dominate the market.

I have a Passport, but three things: One, I'm single, so I don't need or even want the extra seats nor video players, nor back cabin voice. Two: I did want the J35 engine, because it's legendary and probably the last iVTEC V6 (you can keep ur turbos thx). Three I live in Canada in a snowbelt, and the iVTM4 with quality snow tires is sublime in the snow. Unless you try it in snow +asphalt you may not truly understand the strengths of the Passport.

I miss my 2019 Passport, now driving a 2023 Pilot. Yes, the new body style is nice… But, my Passport had such better handling and road manners, very similar to a former BMW X3. It really drove quite well. The new Pilot’s engine is not as good, it is weaker, and the new transmission shifts abruptly 1-2 and overall is inferior compared to the 9-speed on the Passport. Fuel mileage is much worse, I can barely get 24mpg on the highway, whereas the Passport would be upper20’s all day long.

I bought a 2024 passport after considering other options like the Mazda CX-5/50 because it was the largest suv I could fit inside my garage and was the most comfortable to sit in. The Mazda’s are nice cars but I felt cramped in it, the headroom for a driver above 6’2” was terrible. Yes, the Honda isn’t perfect but it offers the most comfortable ride, most storage in its class. I have a 2020 Passport, it is a great all around vehicle. Terrific driver and road trip car, I installed 18” Pilot wheels to allow for more sidewall and a less harsh ride. My only complaint is the button shifter, to say I’m not a fan is an understatement. I also feel it is a safety issue, I have frequently turned off my wife’s RAV4, without shifting it to park (learned behavior from my Passport). Love the content, David and the presentation is spot-on. As a point, I hear you when you say the Pilot offers more space, is bigger, and only costs a bit more than the Passport; however, bigger is not always better, regardless of the upfront investment. The Pilot would have been our choice when we were still hauling kids around, but at this point in our life, the extra space in the Pilot, and subsequently, the additional cost, albeit it minimal, would be wasted. For us, the Passport checks off all the boxes.

And the Honda
J35Y VTec mated to the 9 speed conventional (no crv) trans is rock solid reliable. I looked at the KIA, Hyundai, and even a Ford. Honda all day. Mine is Sonic Gray. The rear hatch height of the new Pilot, has been severely lowered over the prior generation, to the point where it is barely 28" on the sides and 30" in the center. MUCH lower height than the Passport. Putting it differently, the new Pilot, can NOT fit a 30" full-sized dog crate in the hatch area, while the Passport can fit it like a charm. Passport has a MUCH more practical rear hatch area, vis-a-vis the new Pilot, and is practicality not a major aspect to getting an SUV ?

I bought a new Pilot in 2011 that rode very well but was kind of boxy and didn’t handle curves all that well. In 2016 I purchased a new Pilot Elite and it was all I could ask for. Even the gpm surprised me with 21 in town and 27 on the road. In 2021 I purchased a new Passport Elite and it’s the best vehicle I have ever owned considering over all performance. It’s a little stiffer ride than my Pilots were but it really hugs the road and it is pretty darn quick. Didn’t need the 3rd row but still needed space for luggage on trips to Florida. With the 2nd row down I think there is every bit as much space as my Pilots had with there 2nd and 3rd row down. I will definitely purchase a Passport again as long as they keep the 3.5 naturally aspirated engine. Never a problem with any of them. My only problem with it is the front row arm rest which they have now changer with the 2024 model. 2nd row is very comfortable and easily accommodates larger people. Plenty of charging ports and cup holders all around and a/c controls for rear passage as well as heated seats on the upper models. Front row has heated and ventilated seats on the Elite. Also very high ratings on safety all the way around.

I think the Passport is a great option and alternative for the Pilot, for those who don't need the 3rd row, but don't want something as small as a CR-V. Great for an adventure vehicle.
Moreover, like how the Ridgeline is a truck for non-truck people. The Pilot is an adventure vehicle, without having to deal with the inefficiencies of a body on frame vehicle, like a 4Runner.
It may not out-perform a 4Runner, off-road, but it'll get really close, and do much better than a Rav4 or Highlander. Plus, that shorter rear overhang is going to help a lot, off-road.
This thing is basically as good as the Defender, off-road. Its off-road management is at least as good as Toyota's newest system, but definitely better than Toyota's previous system.
I just don't know why they haven't updated the body design to the new platform yet. This old design should be on clearance already.
IMO, they should update the Passport to the new Pilot platform, and slightly change it to have more features from the previous Element; a more squared design and split tailgate. It'll be everything Element fans would want: more space, more power, 4 full doors, and that split tailgate.

People need real world fuel economy specs & power ratings.

You do an engineering review yet you say nothing about the engine, nine-speed automatic transmission, or the AWD system😂😂 You compare this to the Toyota products and as far as I'm concerned the biggest difference is in the drive trains. Toyota offers modern hybrid and turbo drivetrains which are in high demand. This vehicle and the Pilot only have one naturally asperated V6 engine. I would skip the 2023 version and get the 2024 when it gets all the pilot features. Speaking about the Pilot, the average American family has 2 children, why anyone would need a 7 passenger vehicle is beyond me.

If you travel on vacation with adults or children. If you carry a lot of stuff. My elderly handicapped parent who passed away a few years ago. She used wheelchair and walker. Throw those 2 items in with luggage, and your cargo space will diminish.
My sister had Dodge minivan in the 1990s. It's replacement was Honda Ridgeline Pickup Truck with Tonneau Cover over its bed.
So it can haul a lot of stuff and always taking trips.
I picked the Ridgeline and have used for myself.
      It's a multi-purpose vehicle.
Drives like a SUV with a bed but it's beefed up.
I will be replacing my personal 20+yr old Acura sedan next month.
They didn't redesign the Ridgeline this year. So I'm getting 2024 Pilot
Elite. I did alot of deep searching in my mind. I absolutely love the Ridgeline. For years said it would be my personal next vehicle.
Although prior to 2017 the Acura MDX was on my radar.
So no full redesign of Ridgeline that faded months ago. I had already started looking at Pilot ever since redesign release 2023.
You fold that 3rd Row of seats down and use for cargo space.

This is my first time viewing your site. I was very interested in your engineering review. I never thought that much about the paint and the gaps of alignment. I appreciate that you think that Honda does a good job especially with the paint thickness. I currently drive a 2006 pilot. 194,000 miles I’ve considered replacing it. The pilot has gotten longer by 6 inches… Which I don’t need in my garage. And I never use the third row. In 18 years I think we’ve used the third row one time. I like the height in the pilot and the passport. Very important for me to sit up high but I agree with you that unfortunately Honda just doesn’t give you the features that, for example, Hyundai does in its Santa Fe calligraphy model. I want those folding side mirrors so I don’t clip them off entering my garage that happened one time and I want the standard shifter and the wireless iPhone Apple CarPlay. That said I think that for reliability you can’t beat that Honda. Unfortunately, as you said the styling is so boring. It barely looks different from my 2006 model. but reliability is really number one.

Engineering review comes up really short, nothing about the Power train and the key features that buyers should be aware of like : V6 Engine still has a Timing Belt (Costly replacement), Stop & start feature, Cylinder deactivation which has issues (Called VSM) which most buyers don't care for & are not really much of a fuel savings. Also the chronic issue with the GDI Engines (Carbon built up on the Intake Valves) which Toyota did something about by incorporating a Dual Injection System (Port Injection with GDI). Honda Passport is a beautiful SUV, but would be better offer with Toyota Power train. I don't like the Push Button Shifters, I don't see the safety measures in this feature, much prefer a shifter so I can quickly move mechanically. The Honda CR-V is not much better either with 1.5Liter Turbo (Stay away from Turbos).
All these New Vehicles with Plastic parts and so much drive by wire Components cost a heck of a lot of money to fix & I am convinced we better start keep some of the older Generation Vehicles because they were made better and cost less to repair.

It's good looking on the outside and rather spartan on the inside and you're absolutely correct about the lack of tech features that even a few subcompact CUVs offer is embarrassing and there's no excuse, I agree. Since the Passport is most likely due for a redesign and complete refresh in 2025, it would've been nice to hear what this generation got right and what the next generation needs to address, fix and or change in terms of engine and transmission. Thanks, for the review. We a have a good friend who has a 2023 Passport and have rode in it with him this summer and fall. Compared to our 2019 CX-5 Signature it is roomier and nice, but it felt and looked spartan and leathers were stiff, not as comfortable or luxury feeling as our car. I found the shifter odd and like the traditional shift of the Mazda better. I also found the although roomier, the backseat was uncomfortable with a low seat height or high floor height. Overall the Mazda fits our needs well, it could use a little more back seat room but we don't have rear passengers very often. Still prefer the quality and luxury of the Mazda for the price.
    Thanks, again for your reviews.

The only vehicles I’ve ever had paint problems with are Honda’s. Big, circular, flaky, cancerous-looking paint chips started bubbling up & falling off. I babied that Honda, too. Also, the transmission went out at 76k miles. There’s a reason that Toyota/Lexus are at the top of the charts 📊 in reliability (engineering) & Honda/Acura are not. It’s disappointing how much Honda/Acura have slipped over the last two decades. Also, Toyota/Lexus does not require manual valve adjustments. Honda needs to reinvent this as they produce more engines than any other car manufacturer. I’ve read/heard that they maybe doing this sooner than later.

Bought a new Passport Touring in April 2021. Absolutely love the powertrain. Not so much in love with the technology. The push button shifter is slow to respond compared to a mechanical system and the navigation is often lucky that I'm not holding a hammer in my hand when its most common response is .....Pardon?😂 Have an 06 Odyssey with 215k on it and it operates nearly as new. Change the timing belt myself and its not really that difficult for an average DIY mechanic.
