Top Gear: Greatest Car In The World - Citroen DS

  • Unseen since the mid-2000s. Throughout the original run of the second series of Top Gear, broadcast during the Summer of 2003, a phone-in competition was held in order to determine the greatest car ever made, which the Land Rover eventually won. For this competition, all three hosts made a respective piece on their personal choice, in addition to six guest hosts - something which never happened again on the 2002 incarnation of Top Gear until the departure of the trio. The competition went as follows:
    Episode 1 - McLaren F1 (Murray Walker)
    Episode 2 - Jaguar E-Type (Chris Barrie)
Episode 3 - Ford Mustang (Jeremy Clarkson)
    Episode 4 - London Taxi (A.A. Gill)
Episode 5 - Land Rover (Richard Hammond)
    Episode 6 - Fiat 500 (Nick Mason)
Episode 7 - Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud (Stuart Hall)
Episode 8 - Citroen DS (James May)
Episode 9 - Audi Quattro (Graeme Le Saux)
As of 2020, two of these segments are still missing and those that are available either come from Jabba's original recordings of Series 2 (which are no longer available), or a BBC World re-airing. The only exception to this is part of Murray Walker's report on the McLaren F1, which survived into the Back in the Fast Lane DVD. For whatever reason, since their international showing on BBC Prime in 2005, the decision was made to cut all references to this competition, resulting in each episode losing 10 - 15 minutes' worth of footage.

I love this car's unapologetic pedestrian friendliness.

Thanks for posting this!! It was deleted a few years ago when the post-Jeremy Clarkson departure from BBC. James May's presentation makes this my preferred DS historical contribution.

      No problem!
I still don't understand why, out of all the competitions Top Gear held, the editors decided to cut this one out in its entirety. The BBC are just weird like that.

    Love them.
In Australia in 1971 leaving school I picked up my first car...
An Aussie assembled ID 19 with manual steering and gear change...
Within 3 weeks I roared around the country side siting on 85 mph and covered 5,000 miles...
Those were the days.. I progressed to DS21 & DS21 EFI 5 speed Pallas... Supreme machines..
    A bit of Citroen trivia...
The designer of one of the greatest building designs in the world... the Sydney Opera House
    owned a DS in Sydney...
Very popular car for architects and engineers who love design excellence.

The steering wheel column is set up incorrectly on this car. You would think it would have been perfect for a car review. I am surprised no one else had commented on this.

Well Roger, it is like this, . . . the car featured is my car and that is just how I like the steering wheel set up . I drive with my hands, like a hamster, at "ten to two" but I like to hook my thumb over the spoke of the wheel. It's just more comfy for me. So I've adjusted the position of the wheel to suit me, the driver. The car, mine for over thirty years, is in fact unoriginal from ' as sold' specification in several dozen ways. No doubt you are eagle eyed enough to spot some of the others! Despite the offense this causes anorakish purists it is still a jolly nice ride. Some people get cross about men who wear brown shoes on town but hey!! 🙂🙂🙂 Have a nice one won't you.

Unfortunately it's the only recording that exists outside of the BBC's library, so it's this or nothing until they get their head out of their collective asses and release the series untouched. This segment is gone in every known reairing of this episode, including the streaming versions on Amazon and MotorTrend On Demand.
