I like how Dan’s advocating for slow travel and I aspire to his lifestyle. It is definitely preferable to rushing into and settling on one destination. Thanks, Dan for another inspiring video.
A masterful reality check, Dan. The retirees who come across this video before making their move will be way ahead of the bumblers who don't. A lot of your wisdom is not obvious. You should pin this in your top 5 for newbies. Retiring to a new country is a chance for a new start in life. A time to change everything. To look forward. Be optimistic. Toss your old patterns, old stuff, even old people. Find a new place. It's not scary if one learns from others, plans ahead, and is flexible.
I've been watching Dan's videos for 8 years and retired at 63. Now following Dan's advice and stayed in many of his favorites (9 countries so far but I did go to a few expensive countries in Europe mainly Switzerland). Heading to Asia next and I can assure all of you we agree on most of his top locations. I have the Schwab card too. My budget is $1700 which was easy to achieve in Mexico and Eastern Europe. Thanks as always Dan!
I had an interesting experience attempting to acquire the Schwab card, the one promising the atm fee rebates. They never sent the card and when I inquired about it and ask if it had been sent, got no reply and the csr closed the account, said the account was only for investing with Schwab. So, unfortunately, I encountered a completely inept Schwab moron. May I ask the exact name of the card you applied for? Because they had a different name for the account than the application I filled out. I wasted a month with that fruitless effort. Thank you
@@marcofluffEurope was different since I only had 90 days. I spent at least 5 days and often extended several days if Iiked it. In Mexico I went to 5 locations over 8 months.
Awesome brother 👏🏼👏🏼 Another great video sir. ✌🏼 God knows we have made tons of mistakes since moving from 🇨🇦 Canada. Cheers from 2 Canadians living in Mexico. 🇲🇽❤️🙏🏼
Excellent advice. This is precisely why I subscribe to this channel years ago. I'm currently in Manila, after spending time in Mexico. Who knows where I'll end up next. Slow travel is the way to go. Thanks Dan!
Great advice. I moved to Chile and found that I liked Argentina and Peru better. That was after I rented an apartment for a year...duh. Well, once burned.
You are definitely one of,if not the best, travel sites, especially concerning retiring or slow travel. I really hope all the new travel laws don't come too quickly.
Most excellent and seemingly honest advice I believe I've heard in general on RUclips for moving or traveling abroad and I will most definitely follow you and your channel with your wealth of knowledge that I believe is worthy of sincerely considering. JW - Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia
Never, never forget you are a guest in their country. Their house, their rules. Don’t do stupid things that will wear out your welcome and make it harder on those that come after you. If it doesn’t suit you, get back on the plane and go elsewhere. It’s a big world, lots of choices. If every place you go is wrong, maybe it’s not the places, it’s you.
Good, but it's good to keep in mind that one may now have the $$ or desire to spend heaps on travelling to many places, esp after age 60.. some wish to retire. Ty for this video; good points.
I scanned all my photos but every time I try and store them in the cloud, the flight attendants and passengers restrain me in my seat. I have no idea how I’m going to get this done.
Thank you for the great video Dan. I am going to start traveling through South East Asia soon. Do you have any suggestions for travel groups so I don't have to go alone?
Don't you need a long term visa to get things like a bank account or driving license in many cases? So getting a long term visa is part of experiencing the country to the fullest and in a way how it would feel in the long run. For Thailand for example you need a driving license to drive all those motorbikes and your car license from home won't cover that. So if you want a working insurance and don't want to risk paying for damages to other people yourself, you need that driving license. Even if you don't stay forever in that country that local driving license and bank account will be helpful for future visits. Also I wouldn't just check different neighbor countries, but also different cities within the same country and even different districts in the same city can make a huge difference. So it could take a while to explore for example 3-6 very different cities like Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin in Thailand. Hard to explore that without a driving license and a long term visa.
All countries have different visas and driving regulations. Regarding Thailand, you don't need to drive. Transport options are vast and cheap - trains, buses, minivans, air, Grab car or motorbike (like Uber). Think about it, it's a luxury being chauffeured! Or heck get a bike or ebike. We lived there 2 years and only rented a motorbike once. Ignored a license. Wife got a bank account as a student, there are dozens of visas like retiree, work, nomad, elite. I never needed or wanted a bank account in 9 years in Viet Nam. Do you really want to report FATCA? Use ATMs. Seeing how payments are moving fast to digital wallets and cards, I expect there will soon be a way for tourists to load them if not already.
How to describe it, and am I the only one? In the last videos, the sound is somewhat ... hissy, scratchy, hollow, rugged, creaky, whatever ^^, especially in interviews, but not only (e. g. here), unlike other channels. Otherwise, thank you very much for the advice which I find to be really appropriate and thoughtful.

Every where: No drugs. No smoking. No hoes! No violence. Don't discuss religion or politics. No alcohol! Don't hang out after midnight.
The best advice I gave my son is what you just said. That advice can be used worldwide!
Might add: No breathing! (because of climate change)

Bonus mistake: Don't get involved in a foreign country's politics. Until you become a citizen, you're a guest risking deportation.
