Transportation - $20 to $50;
VISA RUNS - That is the variable at the moment. $300 to $500 every 3 months - but you get to go to Vietnam, like Da Nang.

I just lost my twin sister in July from a rare disease (MSA - Multiple Symptom Atrophy) that took her in 4 years. I also lost a son at 14 years old - took him in ten months to (AML Leukemia). They both died on the same date- 15 years apart. How does this pertain to the content on this video? Life is short and we only get one. I'm 57 and have no business retiring early at 58. I do not have a million bucks but I do have savings that can provide for more than 10 years living in Thailand before I take social security. I'm tired - I've worked for 39 years and I want peace and beauty. The biggest issue for me is that I won’t be able to see my younger son but he's doing great and we will visit twice a year. Nothing is permanent in life so go for it. Just a little of my story and thank you for your channel

I live in Thailand. I spend about $250 a month. I own a house with my wife. It cost us 11.5k£ gbp. Nice big land and garden, basic house with its issues but we have AC and no floods and water is good. Not interested in the life in the resorts, been to Pattaya for 2 hours and left asap. We live in a rice farmers village. It’s beautiful and quiet and nature everywhere. Town is 20 minutes drive, bigger town 35 minutes. When we want to we fly to Bangkok for a city break. Those who spend 1000s a month here are either rich or easily marketed to. I’d rather invest my extra money and get richer than throw it away on rent in an overpriced place. Each to his own. Anyone reading this who can’t believe Thailand is as expensive as stayed in this video there are other choices, depends what you want from life and if the simpler life suits them there are options. We got a 60% discount on the property via wife’s family, hence the low cost. No rent to pay, building work is cheap here for labour, materials are reasonable prices. We will install some solar panels to supplement electricity but I don’t find it crazy expensive now.

Clearly you don't have any or adequate medical insurance, so you're making a bad decision. Good medical insurance (that covers really good hospitals outside of Thailand) will cost you at least $200/month. You say you'd rather "invest your extra money to get richer than throw it away on rent in an overpriced place." So you'd rather collect money for the sake of collecting it rather than spending it living in more comfort? What's the point of "getting richer by saving money" if you don't want to spend it on anything nice? You actually claim rent is "throwing money away" when just about every expat knows that it's cheaper to rent than to buy in Thailand. Funny thing about humans is that if we only have $250/month we can get by. Some will even fool themselves into thinking they're living well.

I live on the average of 15 to $18 an hour and usually not even 40 hours of work a week play in Tennessee. Not only do I make about an average of 400 to 600 a week in Tennessee I can save enough money doing that to work in national Parks out west that provide free housing free laundry free water free electric free internet you just pay for your food and make about $18 an hour 4 months out of the year on a beautiful national Park then I go every year or two to Thailand or the Philippines all from making 15 to $18 an hour

One other thing you need to keep in mind when moving there is that inflation will still happen. Another is insurance goes up as you get older. You will want your income to be more so you can keep investing and grow your income to keep up. My personal goal is 3500 a month with a 2k budget. I plan on retiring to Pattaya at 50. People who live on 1K tend to skip out on important things like insurance and emergency funds.

Dan as usual your videos are on point. I was looking at your budget and it was very reasonable. Of course rent can be cheaper. I’ve seen many videos with realtors showing apartments for $300. They are further out but right off the rail system. As a person from the north east. I am ready to explore as a native. You said something on your video that reminded me of what a very famous Buddhist monk stated. He was making the statement regarding a spouse. He said people need to begin learning how to appreciate and love the person you have. Vice wanting something else to love. In other words. Stop comparing what you have or don’t have. Stop wanting something else. Learn to love and appreciate what you have. Personally I don’t need all these material things. Just some music. Tropical juices and good people. I can eat once a day and be happy. I don’t drink alcohol. I plan on coming and teaching English. Even if I teach to local children for food. It will be enough. Three classes a week for two hours. They can brome fruit and eggs for payment. Vegetables etc etc. They can teach me about Thailand and the language. A win win.

I was fortunate enough to spend 30 days in Thailand in 2022. You are absolutely right in describing cost of living variations. Everyone is different. I've lived like locals in Thailand and Costa Rica and I've partied like a rock star blowing money. The key is to understand that when you retire in a foreign country that you are retired or living and not on vacation. I see so many people abandon international living because they say it's expensive like the US when in reality, they lived like they were on vacation and blew through the savings. I plan on retiring abroad and love your videos.

Don't worry folks - (he's American)...... 2000 US will allow you, at least now, to live an albeit somewhat modest life but you can still afford enough to treat yourself. Just bring enough to to get yourself going with a used, modest car. Just don't expect to stay in the fashionable parts. That having been said, actually, for the rich/upper middleclass this is very reasoned advice.

Cost to Living vs Cost to Retire
Living paycheck to paycheck anywhere is financial suicide, so it is important to differentiate:
Cost of Living = sum of housing + food + medical + transport + misc + fun. Money spent.
Cost to Retire = Cost of Living + Buffer.
A monthly Buffer covers predictable expenses (medical, moving, vehicle), emergencies, future inflation, peace of mind.
If your Cost of Living is $1600, then $2000 to $3200 monthly income as a Cost to Retire is reasonable. Left over Buffer increases the Nest Egg every month.
No Buffer? You will be drawing down the Nest Egg, don't let it run out.

Ok. So in your example, if you stayed within a strict budget, a range of $400 to $1600 would be saved for the nest egg each month, depending on your monthly income ?

@@Gizziiusa Right. My point is that, I'm just warning people who are planning to move overseas for a better and cheaper life, that a lot of videos say "Retire in Thailand/Philippines/Guatemala/etc for $1200".
I worry that that guys who haven't thought it through, will say, "Wow my retirement check is $1200 a month, I can do that". They don't consider they will need a monthly financial buffer, or a decent nest egg, too, for the unexpected.
Before covid, the Thai baht got really strong. There were lots of vlogs about Brit and Aussie expats who had to return home because their currency lost 30% value, their equivalent $1200 check was now only worth $800 in Thai money.

      Well stated!
Seems like so many people assume that if they have $ x dollars, then they can spend $ x dollars --- never a thought of what opportunities this attitude may cause them to forgo, or what unforeseen expense might de-rail their lifestyle or world.
Keep a healthy buffer as part of your regular monthly budget and *never ever * spend all that you have without considering what you'll have left over!
One way leads to a prosperous and secure life -- the other, to eventual ruin....
      Cheers!...from North Vancouver

    1. 1500 a month in total expenses could have easily been done. I lived in several hotels, and they are more expensive than renting, but since this is a retirement video. This is the tricky part. Because I think you should have insurance. It can still be done but if you are dating more than twice a week. You will feel the pinch
    2. I think at 2000 2500 usd, you can pretty much do anything you want but within reason and not in excess but you will be very comfortable. still got to watch what you spend.
    3. 3000 USD and above, you are living kind of posh, and your only worries are, driving, transportation, pollution and crossing the street lol

Local people can live with their family and share expenses like food, electricity, water, sanitation, internet, scooters, in a house that is already paid for. And no visa expenses. Locals can probably survive on less than 50 USD/month in the countryside. 15 kg of cooking gas is 423 baht, and those who use small amounts of electricty get subsidized. Its all about how you are able to entertain yourself. Many westerners need expensive activities to get enjoyment out of life, and experience lifestyle inflation when they go to a cheaper country. I think most people in the west are just like the local thais. They stay at home most of the time when they are not working, and dont have the time to waste money.

I want to live in the middle of the action, so in the middle of a city which will be a lot more expensive than village life. I'm also not including upcoming major medical expensive, those I will pay out of my retirement savings. It also doesn't include how much I am going to spend on nightlife, that is optional. My goal is not to live inexpensively, but to make it easy to be able to reduce my cost of living without having to drop below my minimum desired level of comfort.

Warning everyone. When you see a string of messages like this that end up recommending a single investment advisor that multiple people in the message stream have all used to retire early using their advice. I would not trust this myself. In such odd situations there may be scams going on. Get your investment advice from real people you know not someone that you hear about on the internet. No offense to anyone who made comments here that is telling a real story or is offering honest advice. But this pattern of behavior where multiple people just seem to show up on the same youtube video and recommend the same person, just seems statistically unlikely to me. I am not even saying this is BS, there is an off chance possibility that someone here is telling a real story. I am just saying the behavior seems so out of the ordinary statistically speaking, that I would never send money to someone like this without very critical consideration and proof. I routinely block anyone that leaves names of brokers, a whatsap or other contact numbers or emails on here. If another one shows up on any of my videos before I read the comments, I don't suggest you trust them without speaking to your lawyer or accountant. I don't know that this person is dishonest, but I wouldn't trust this. Best of luck to everyone. Dan

I think a lot of people only look at their day-to-day or maybe week to week. Many of the "living for $1200" is more about surviving, not living. Most people forget about costs every few months or years. Scooter plus gas, maintenance, title/insurance costs, and then replacing it every so often. What about clothes, laptop, TV, Health insurance, etc. They just see over the next few weeks. Daily meals, rent, electric, water, gym membership, and their thoughts on Transport. Again, may things are missed. One year I recorded every Satang. $2642.22 average per month but if you actually asked me I would have said $1900 or so. This number included actual cost of transferring money (or withdraw fees), varying exchange rate, etc. I didn't travel outside of Thailand/Cambodia that year but it did include all border runs and visa fees and even the cost to expand my passport (ran out of pages). It's these "other things" that people forget. Fyi for the multi-year things like clothes, phone, laptop, tv, scooter, etc. I figured lifecyle on those and then amortized it by year.

We cook breakfast at home. We do drink moderately but stick to Chang and low priced wines. We do not ride motorbikes so get econo car rental. We can get by in europe on the same budget with more emphasis on cooking at home.

Agree some people have a lot on their "needs" list, and those things will cost quite a bit more than other people that don't require those needs. They seem to want the exact western lifestyle, just in a new country. If that is what they want so be it, its their life and their budget.

Everything in life is based on experiences. I may be wrong, but I would guess that the overwhelming majority of western foreigners have either no or very little international travel experience. Because of this, they are at a huge disadvantage. I know a little bit about this subject because I have lived and worked abroad in multiple countries for the past 16 out of 18 years. And throughout that time, the most important thing I have learned is that we as human beings, regardless of nationality need far less than imaginable in order to feel a true sense of peace and contentment. Some of you will do just fine and adjust nicely, while others will fail miserably and perhaps end up homeless in southeast Asia or elsewhere. I wish you all the very best!!!

@@palirvin1871 The rule is that the 800k must be back in your bank 2 months before extension (not 3), and stay in bank 3 months after. You can only spend 400k the rest of the months (it must not go below 400k), 7 months in total. You got this a little wrong, if you do as you say, starting to use it at once after your extension, or spend all 800k of it, you will not get a new extension based on the 800k in bank method 😉

It's 800k and cannot go below 400k for a few months before renewal for next year.. get two bank accounts if you go this route. One to live out of and one to hold your 800k. You don't have to, but it makes it easy on immigration when they are scrolling your bank book to see if you dipped below 400k.

The way you rationalize the difference in lifestyles based on budget is EXACTLY the way I think. I've never been to Thailand. I'm a former US Marine, born and living in Dallas, Texas. At 58, I'm "informally retired" and will move to Thailand after I sell my home in the next few months.
I consider myself flexible in regards to adjusting to new/different living environments, foods and cultures.
I think the biggest hardship for most foreigners moving to Thailand is that too many of them go there not realizing how THEY will have to change what they do/think..........instead, they mistakingly are shocked that the new location doesn't adjust to THEM.

I'm worried about whether individuals who weathered the 2008 financial crisis found it less challenging than my current situation. The stock market's volatility, coupled with a reduced income, is making me anxious about having enough for retirement.

Video advice is mainly for entertainment purposes. Never plan to retire overseas without an exploratory trip first. I suggest 2 weeks is enough time to explore and check out prices for yourself before committing to long term. Too many people move overseas before a visit and realize it does not meet their expectations or budget. Good luck!
