Great advice guys, for people new to this though dont get frustrated its very easy to be with all the different chords you come across, remembering all the shapes of the CAGED system then especially when you come across more complex chords like the 7th family (aka maj, min, dominant) it takes a lot of practice and some time. But stick at it and you will hear a massive improvement to your lead playing and soloing playing in key or out of key. I actually never learned the pentatonic shifting trick, but i did pick up the chord tones trick off of david gilmour on the solo of the song on the turning away. i then learned chord tone soloing is his secret weapon along with using the dorian mode.
Those chords G and Eb related the Eb is from what is called Parallel key, in other words G is key of G major and Eb is from G minor. Rock has been using Parallel key forever some called it modal interchange and goes back to the Classical cats. .
I can't find the exact quote. But i remember hearing a quote from Jimi Hendrix. Something along the lines of "Every single note works with all the other ones. Its all a matter of how to present it" And its kinda funny, because when you start messing around with things like you did at the start, with G major and B flat Major, you kinda start finding that vibe. I don't wanna be that guy but I could absolutely see how those could work out, and i was right haha, sorta a drawn out psychedelic vibe really cool.
Hey Sean, what would you do if sang out of tune ? would stand up and walk out on me ? on a strange coincides I was playing the Joe cocker version of this this Beatles song before I saw and clicked on your video :)
Heyyyyy, that Gmaj to Eb maj thing sounds an *awful* lot like the Carl Perkins' "Honey Don't" progression that he was told would never work musically back in the day, doesn't it? lol! Great tutorial on some rather absurd combos, y'all gave me some good ideas!
Welp, after rocksmith gave me those scales in session mode I can understand at least half of what are you saying :) Still don't know how to imply that into a good melody though.
I'm confused. Here ruclips.net/video/QQ9EbJet2Ss/видео.html you say to play the Bb minor pentatonic over the Bb major chord. Wouldn't you play a Bb major pentatonic over a Bb major chord?
Well that was a moment where mine and Ian's philosophy kind of collided. You're absolutely right that you'd play the Bb major pentatonic over that spot, but the way I think (and usually teach) is to default to minor pentatonic when in a jam, so I was actually referring to the minor pentatonic in the key of Bb (G minor pentatonic). It sounds really confusing but I think the minor pentatonic shape is just so ingrained into guitar players, I think it's helpful to jump into it. I hope that made sense but I might actually talk about this on the QA!
For sure! That's a great way to do it. Get that whole pentatonic scale down in one part of the neck, and get used to how each of the notes sounds to start solo-ing. Good luck!
Man you are like batman and robin for guitar .
The Best Duo!!
Thanks so much!
Sounds very good guys.

Chord tones for the win!
I love how guitarists get so excited for playing 2 chords and 2 scales! Well, unless they re jazz guitarists! Anyway you guys are fun keep it up:)

Definitely! Give it up for the classical cats!
A great example of true masters.
Thanks so much Dom!

As always, the verbalization of this situation by you guys is another example of the rising tide which raises all boats!
😉
Thanks as always Tom!

Still don't know how to imply that into a good melody though.
And now I am finally watching "How to Master the Pentatonic Scale".
So cool to hear!
Thanks for the series, by the way!
It is awesome to be able to put some notes into the 'losing my religion' and sound half decent :)

Haha, wish I could help you out there :)

Can someone summurize the concept it was pretty hard to grasp
When you're playing over a chord that isn't in the key, use chord tones :)
