There are records of one Victorian landowner who stocked high altitude lochs and lochans on his estate in Scotland by having pony panniers (baskets which sit either side of the pony’s withers) lined with linen bags, which themselves were coated with pitch, then filled with stream water, and then the fingerling trout which had been bred in captivity were put into these ‘portable goldfish bags’ and transported to their end destinations by the pony and ghillie. Great endeavour!
Years ago in the states people would load pack horses/mules with big milk cans filled with trout and stock lakes and streams high up in the wilderness .
I’m with you brother. The views were gorgeous. I fish in Utah and Colorado. If I did not catch a fish, the views, the sounds, the water and being in gods creation is sufficient and than some.
I enjoy your videos enormously, especially ones such as this, where you share your experience of the incredible scenery you enjoy. You certainly fish in some beautiful locations.
I've tried a couple of places that seemed fairly devoid of life! I'd be very happy to take a recommendation though if you had one! I love north wales, but have only really sea fished there
@@adventurefishinguk Sea fishing is where I'm from but Lleyn Geirionydd is a good trout lake with a mixture of (brown) trout introduced for various reasons so their colours are considered the most beautiful. I caught a 3/4lb one with red, black and yellow spots, yellow perfect fins, white underbelly. Interestingly, the lake is thought to be dead which keeps everyone away but there is serious tonnage of trout in there. Big eels, too. Only locals tend to know about this...
Thanks for watching! Always nice to hear from someone likeminded who likes fishing some of the more adventurous places. If you have any suggestions of places to try I’m all ears!
Beautiful location and fish mate. If you get chance, get yourself over to New Zealand. I never fished for trout back home, but when I moved here, there wasn't the traditional coarse fisheries I was used to, so I started trout fishing. It is pretty epic over here and I'm sure you'd love it. This video looks like it could be in NZ. Keep up the sweet as content 😊
Proper real wild fishing. I was going to call it a tarn before you did in the video. Those olive green coloured trout are my favourite and have caught some like that in the Scottish highlands but never fished a tarn, though we have many.
I am from Calfornia and we catch Rainbow Trout, which are beautiful also. I have never caught a Brown Trout, my dad did once, a 14 1/2" at Yellowstone National Park, (had to be over 14" to keep). I watch 3 of your videos, "The River has never been fished...," the video, "Fishing under a Mountain Waterfall," and this video. All three have Beautiful scenery. Though you caught smaller Brown Trout in this video, they were magnificently beautiful, so much red in them! I actually think I liked this video overall the best!
Thanks for taking the time to check a few of my videos out I really appreciate it! Glad you've enjoyed them. We have rainbow trout here too but they're mostly stocked, with only one none-native breeding wild population. Yeah i've found brown trout in the mountains always seem to be so vividly coloured!
Fantastic rod setup. Would make it easier to hike or kayak with this set up. Yes, the lake is a glacial tarn, the remnant basin left behind when a glacier has retreated up the valley. The steep wall at the back of the tarn is called a bergschrund or backwall. It’s where the ice cuts almost vertically along with great height of the ice and snow. It’s not a moraine as someone else suggested which is somewhere down the valley - a heap of boulders that were carried down the valley and dumped there when the glacier melted. Fascinating stuff glaciers.
Nice vid. Fly fishing suggestions if i may. 1. Fish the fly first to avoid spooking too many fish 2. If you get a follow don't be afraid to pause for a good few seconds then start retrieve again. They often come back 3. Vary the retrieve speed including very small sharp snatches 4. If you're getting lots of follows but no takes rotate through flies quickly 5. Always try dry fly first to a rising fish. No need to retrieve if the cast is good 6. You need to be stealthier around bank than lure fishing. Dark clothes. 7. Polarised glasses 8. Flies with frills and legs always good when you can't tell what they're feeding on 9. Leader least as long as rod
Good advice - I quite often use daddy long legs or caddis - easy to see, nice big mouthful (that is not matching the hatch but is a temptation for the fish to grab a big mouthful) and on rivers if you can't mend your line well, both chub and trout are used to things like caddis skittering on the surface and, because of the size, fish don't just sip but do a decisive take.
Just subbed! Enjoyed your hike into the small lake and your fishing success. I also liked your convertible fishing setup, spinning and fly. Great video!!!
Good afternoon from America! Thanks for posting your video, it was very soothing to watch and I must say, what a tool that fishing setup you have is! I've only used spinning reels, and baitcasters, but after watching you fly fish, i might just go buy one myself! Thanks again and have a great day buddy!
Weather you catch anything or not, it’s sort of a win win situation. That is such a beautiful location I wouldn’t mind not catching anything. Too class vid mate
Nice video, and Thank you for posting. Reminds me when a couple of friends and i hiked a little over 8 miles to fish Horton lake in the Sierra Nevada U.S. The elevation was around 11,000 ' and the trout had small bodies but big normal sized heads, due to main diet being mosquito's . I was an inexperienced hiker, and i packed way too much weight going up, but the suffering was all worth it.
Great video mate and a lovely spot, one of my favourite in the lakes. Not sure if you know already but I'm fairly certain that that tarn is the only tarn with artic char living within it, they're left over from the last glacial maximum. Would've been great to see you catch one of them

Thanks mate, yeah it’s incredibly clear. It’s great fun watching the fish chase, but annoying seeing all the ones that turn away! Yeah shame about the fly but next time hopefully!
Great to see someone do this, nicely filmed. I always look at those kinds of lakes and think I'd love to fish them as they look so pretty, even if they hold underwhelmingly small browns mainly. Nifty little rod and reels set up. Personally I'm a dedicated trout spin guy, dislike fly immensely. One of my Tenryu, Samurai or Gloomis rods and one or two of several Daiwas 1000's or recent Shimano Stella is what I'd bring. I'd generally have range of lures from Rapala minnows, Celtas, Tassie Devils to cover streams to lakes. @@adventurefishinguk Good point. I've got quite a few spoons in part of my trout lure collection, spanning 5 plano cases. Great video. I love any picturesque videos, especially fishing ones!! You mentioned your back taking the strain in the video. I'm a sports physio and have some little bits that would make it easier. 1) Get your rucksack higher up on your back, not hanging down low. Also, the heaviest items should be at the top with the rucksack filled equally from left to right. 2) Like a lot of injuries, things go 'eek/ bang/ crack" through overuse. So some basic exercises for your quads and core will help no end. Getting fit for fishing hahaha. Who'd have thought it, but joking aside it;ll allow you to keep making more vids. ATB, Chris. :)
Thanks for the advice, I tend to get a lot of pain behind my left shoulder blade towards the middle i think it’s probably caused by lots of casting with a bag on. Weight distribution isn’t something I’d considered so thanks for the pointer!
Thanks for the stunning scenery - you reminded me how much that part of the world is an absolute wonder. The geomorphologic feature that 'hosts' the tarn is called a cirque - created by the last glacial phase to affect planet Earth. There's a nice one on the side of Snowdon.
Lovely spot. I camped with my wife next to that tarn and swam across it's cold water back in 2002. Also got exhausted going up to that same peak. I've caught Arctic charr in very similar little corrie loughs in Ireland. Wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility..
Beautiful isn't it! I don't suppose you could point me in the right direction of a small corrie lough where i'd have a chance at a char could you? That may just be worth driving to Ireland for
@@adventurefishinguk Hi there, they are very difficult to catch on rod and line. You would love the little Lough Callee below Carauntoohil, Irelands highest point. We discovered charr there back around 2010. Also contains beautiful little brownies. Another of my favourites is Coomasaharn and Coomaglaslaw, which contain the most beautifully patterned char I've seen. Also home to some enormous Ferrox trout. You would love it over there!
I’ve caught many brookies. They are in my opinion the prettiest trout I’ve caught especially during spawning. Just beautiful. They don’t grow as fast as the other types. Mostly wild ones and are a great way to spend a day. @@adventurefishinguk
@AdventureFishingUK this was in NW Montana in the Mission mountains. I grew up there. It was my understanding he and some others planted a few lakes there
Great video George pal what a beautiful location 👍🏼😁 that 2nd trout was absolutely stunning the colour were amazing I’ve never seen those colours on any trout 🤷🏼♂️ the black & red spots with that greenish body was just delightful I was out again tonight with my wee Brother we both caught a sea trout each him on the fly & mines on a Mepps so I’ve still not caught on the fly rod but the conditions on the local rivers are so bad very low & clear 🤦🏼♂️ we need rain so badly I’ve got my casting quite good I’ve had 2/3 flies over the same rising fish but it wouldn’t take I need more flies maybe smaller than the few I have I think most are 14’s so some 16 & 18’s are a must also when I tie my fly on I’m forever getting kinks in the line which clearly messes up the presentation 🤷🏼♂️ I’ll get there though just have to keep at it & take as much advice as I can get. Take care pal n Tight lines ✌🏼💙🎣🏴👍🏼
Thanks for watching mate! Sounds like you've had some good sea trout fishing, i've not caught one in years! Hopefully i'll see one on the bank soon. And yeah i'm always getting kinks in my line too
I did something similar in Colorado years ago w a friend, found a series of beaver ponds 5 miles from the nearest road and caught native trout on every cast it seemed. Kept 2 for dinner, threw the rest back, camped out and hiked out the next morning, wish I could wash rinse repeat that day.
I remember it was in the White River Nat'l forest near Mt Sopris in the Aspen valley, north slope of Sopris south of Carbondale but dont remember if there was a trailhead # to refer to
Wow you went that amazing walk/hike to to fish for real wild brown trout. I'd like to know who else has done it? Im from Scotland, you should see how many of these small Loch's are. We need a helicopter company to sponsor you 😂
Haha yeah I wouldn’t say no to a helicopter ride up to one! I’ve seen Scotland looks absolutely full of mountain lochs, hopefully I get the chance to explore some of them!
A tarn is a small circular lake formed by a glacier An old northern english word derived from old Norse ( Tjorn) meaning a small mountain lake with no tributaries.
Thanks for watching! The rod is £129.99 but that includes all the tips, the rod case, the spinning reel, the fly reel and a 2 year guarantee. You can get 10% off with code AFUK10 too which makes it even cheaper
Looks like a lovely place. I like your rod setup, where can I get one? I remember some years ago in New Zealand we were fishing in Diamond Lake at Paradise (yes, it really is called that) when a DOC ranger came along. He saw we weren't doing so well and suggested we cross the Dart River and try our luck at Lake Sylvan. He also told us there was no limit there and no minimum size, within reason. Apparently the lake was so over stocked (its a bit of a mission to get there) and the trout weren't getting to legal size so they wanted it to be knocked back a bit. It was brilliant, fly or lure we were getting a decent fish on almost every cast!
That sounds like an amazing place to fish, apparently the trout get huge in new zealand. You can find all the info about the rod in the pinned comment or in the description!
i fished a small remote lake like that high up in the mountains of california 50 years ago and caught some golden trout but they were so beautiful i felt guilty and put them back. i was never sure how they got there and it was harder to get there than your lake. i too was using a combo spin/fly rod made by eagle claw and a small mitchell left hand reel which i still have. i used panther martin lures but did not try any flies. good luck fishing to ya.
I know the rod you mean I think, the eagle claw trailmaster? They look really cool. I've always wanted to catch some of the trout you have over there. Brook, golden, cutthroat etc

Thanks for watching! Yeah i remember my gcse geography too, this kind of glacial lake is called a 'Corrie' if i'm not mistaken!
@@adventurefishinguk : here we go, the wonders of Wikipedia...

@@milinkerhe thanks very much for information!
Great video, what an amazing place!
Thanks mate, amazing isn't it!
We call that a brown trout here in US. Work of art.
Yeah they're brown trout here too, they're native to the UK. It's a shame we don't have brook trout and cutthroat, those look amazing!
I’ve caught many brookies. They are in my opinion the prettiest trout I’ve caught especially during spawning. Just beautiful.
They don’t grow as fast as the other types. Mostly wild ones and are a great way to spend a day.

My cousins grandfather took fish into high mountain lakes in the 40's on donkeys and planted them. I have fished them. Beautiful fish.
That’s an amazing bit of history! Where abouts did he do that? Someone else commented saying they are aware of it happening in Scotland
@AdventureFishingUK this was in NW Montana in the Mission mountains. I grew up there. It was my understanding he and some others planted a few lakes there
I wild camped there with some mates back in 1998 - there were fish rising all the time back then too!
That’s really cool to hear, they must have been in there a long time!
Merci pour la video et BRAVO
He looks like he’s having a lot of fun.
I definitely was!
You should try fishing sprinkling tarn just south of seathwaite, near borrowdale.
Thats on my list for sure!
Oh wow 😮❤😊
Thanks for watching!
Nice video. Looking forward to investing in the x5 this months payday tidy bit of kit it seems
It’s a great bit of kit, don’t forget you can get 10% off with code AFUK10. They have a great 2 year guarantee too 👍
very nice video, love the vibe! try a dry fly when they're rising next time, should give you better chances
Thanks for watching mate! I did try a couple but i didn't take any floatant with me so they kept sinking 🤦♂️
Absolutely beautiful! Best part, not another soul in sight. Wow! Keep that place a secret. LOLOLOL
Amazing isn't it, thanks for watching!
wow that is such a cool fishing rod, sweet vid
It's a great bit of kit isn't it!
Take care pal n Tight lines
✌🏼💙🎣🏴👍🏼
Thanks for watching mate! Sounds like you've had some good sea trout fishing, i've not caught one in years! Hopefully i'll see one on the bank soon. And yeah i'm always getting kinks in my line too
I did something similar in Colorado years ago w a friend, found a series of beaver ponds 5 miles from the nearest road and caught native trout on every cast it seemed. Kept 2 for dinner, threw the rest back, camped out and hiked out the next morning, wish I could wash rinse repeat that day.
I’m a CO native and love finding hard to get to places? Where was it at do you remember? I’d love to put the boots on and cast a line out for you
I remember it was in the White River Nat'l forest near Mt Sopris in the Aspen valley, north slope of Sopris south of Carbondale but dont remember if there was a trailhead # to refer to
@@garymeyer4243 thanks a lot that’s plenty for me to do some research!
That sounds really cool, thanks for sharing and i hope you enjoyed this video!
I’ve seen Scotland looks absolutely full of mountain lochs, hopefully I get the chance to explore some of them!
lovely vid mate
Thanks for watching!
Looks like it might be worth taking a gold pan. That little stream looked goldy.
Good idea that would be great fun
I spent days doing the same thing in the wilds of Scotland over the years. Remote little puddles full of fish
I bet there’s loads of places like this to fish in Scotland I’d love to explore them one day
Reely neat bit of kit.
Great rod I love it 👍 Thanks for watching!
Try Panther Martin, Melos. Also try a small piece of cut shrimp. Sounds crazy, but Trout love Shrimp
I had no idea they liked shrimp! Heard great things about the panther martins though
Amazing video man, I’d really like to start going out on hikes and find an insane fishing spot like that, I’ve just got to get some more equipment
If you’re going to look into backpacking equipment or an equipment of the sort, definitely look into used stuff first, way better value.
Thanks mate! You should get yourself a rigged and ready rod they're perfect for the job
Such a sick place, enjoyed the video mate.
Glad you enjoyed it mate thanks for watching!
Greetings from across the pond
Thanks for watching mate I appreciate it!
A tarn is a small circular lake formed by a glacier
An old northern english word derived from old Norse ( Tjorn) meaning a small mountain lake with no tributaries.
Good knowledge! Another term for it is a Corrie lake, I remember that from GCSE geography 👍
Red Tarn has a tributary which flows down into Ulswater
Thanks for the video , what's the rrp on this road ?
Thanks for watching! The rod is £129.99 but that includes all the tips, the rod case, the spinning reel, the fly reel and a 2 year guarantee. You can get 10% off with code AFUK10 too which makes it even cheaper
Great to see you using the fly rod. Where you can not over head cast due to obstacles. Try either a roll or single Spey cast
Good advice, I think that’s a little above my pay grade though!
@@adventurefishinguk not at all buddy. Roll cast really easy. Another fantastic upload. Keep up the good work 👍👍
@@jumpjump2906 Thanks mate, I'll try and learn!

Reminds me of Lough Talt in Ireland very beautiful
Thanks for watching!
Gotta love that rod
Great bit of kit isn’t it!
Beautiful fish
Thank you 👍
Looks like a lovely place.
Great vid my friend
Glad you enjoyed it!
that bit with the fly looked great
It was great fun! Thanks for watching 👍
i fished a small remote lake like that high up in the mountains of california 50 years ago and caught some golden trout but they were so beautiful i felt guilty and put them back. i was never sure how they got there and it was harder to get there than your lake. i too was using a combo spin/fly rod made by eagle claw and a small mitchell left hand reel which i still have. i used panther martin lures but did not try any flies. good luck fishing to ya.
I know the rod you mean I think, the eagle claw trailmaster? They look really cool. I've always wanted to catch some of the trout you have over there. Brook, golden, cutthroat etc
Brilliant videos
Thanks mate, really enjoyed filming this one!!
