My favorite part of the book this movie was based off of was when Greg Sestero was living with Tommy and went to go see "The Talented Mr. Ripley" at the behest of a friend. The movie is about a sociopath who adheres to a successful and popular family, tries to emulate the charming young man at the center of it, becomes so obsessed he falls in love with him and ends up clubbing him to death with an oar in a fit of mania. Greg walks out of the theater white as a sheet and thinking "Oh my god, Tommy's gonna kill me."
You're so right, and then he goes home to his parent's house and has a horrible two week flu-type illness which further screws up his outlook temporarily.

There are some eerie parallels between the Tommy/Greg and Mike/Jay dynamic, one a creepy, controlling weirdo, and the other a handsome, all American best friend. I don’t mean this point too seriously.

the audio book version of the Disaster Artist book is great, Greg narrates it and does a perfect Tommy impersonation for his dialogue. I kind of can't imagine this movie living up to the audio book, which is weird.
I feel like the best way to experience this is to watch The Room, then watch The Disaster Artist, and then read The Disaster Artist. That way you're not constantly comparing the movie to the book, and each new thing that you're exposed to in regards to The Room ends up building up your understanding of Tommy in layers.
Damn, now I really want to see David Fincher direct a version of The Disaster Artist now hahah I think a serious film about the psychological aspects of ego in film making inspired by The Room would be fantastic to be fair
I saw the premiere of 'The Disaster Artist' in Melbourne, where Greg Sestero presented. He spoke for about half an hour, answering questions. Was rather witty and made Tommy Wiseau out to be a complete narcissist (unsurprising). The film was hilarious but I agree that the humour comes from the mocking the film does of The Room. Also, glad you guys brought up the homoeroticism, particularly from Tommy's side. I haven't read the book so couldn't figure out whether they added it for the film (this being a James Franco film after all...) and what the actual context was.
He enjoys adapting "The Great American Novel". THREE Faulkner adaptations, a Steinbeck (which is probably the best thing he's made, though that's not saying much) and I think he still owns the rights to a Bukowski. If you thought the make-up in The Disaster Artist was a trip, wait 'till you see Franco as a character with acne so bad he has boils the size of grapes all over his face!
That's too bad that the movie leaves out the darker aspects of Tommy's personality that are described in the book. I loved the book, and smoothing over Tommy's rough edges seems a bit disingenuous to me.
Exactly and you don't have to make Tommy a monster you show the good and bad sides of him like they did in the book it's like they were affraid that Tommy would not approve the movie so they made him a hero
Exactly, what made the Disaster Artist so compelling to read wasn't the behind-the-scenes stuff about The Room, it was the study of Tommy. It was dark at times, but it also made Tommy a deeply sympathetic character. Pretty disappointing.
I did see the movie, and it absolutely left out a lot of Tommy's darker moments from the book, which I also read. Tommy's growing jealousy and childish tantrums he had at Greg at Tommy's apartment, like raising the rent to spite Greg for his success, or Tommy driving like a madman, almost getting into accidents seemingly to scare Greg with Greg in the car because Tommy was mad at him. These were left out, and it makes the movie feel less accurate to the book. I could go on, too, but I think you get my point.
Simply put... if you've read The Disaster Artist book, don't watch the movie it's not even 10% as good... but if you like the Room and haven't read/don't intend to read the Disaster Artist book, give the film a shot.
Also the Office has a scene like that. Everyone's laughing at Michaels movie, he gets upset. But then recognizes that they are enjoying the movie anyhow and he's cool with it and starts laughing too.

James Franco also played a character on General Hospital named Franco, who's a multi-media artist/serial killer. apparently, he was encouraged to seek out the role for his work in Maladies, where he plays a former soap opera actor trying to make it as a writer.
Since hearing them mention Boogie Nights all I can think of is Paul Thomas Anderson directing this film. Come to think of it, Joaquin would make an excellent Tommy Wiseau
Real life Greg has a very "I'm dead inside, please kill me" look when he's around Tommy. Movie Greg is just happy to be around Tommy and wants to be with him. I'm not sure if it's the script or if Dave is a bad actor, but he's nothing like Greg in this.
They’ve known each other for years, kind of a strained friendship but I guess they like each other so it’s natural that greg would kind of be meh with tommy . Back then though, you gotta remember he was 19 years old and am actor looking for an opportunity and he meets this eccentric guy and is in awe of him and gets cast in his movie so naturally I can see a young Greg being in awe of him. It’s really not that far fetched.
@@cicolasnage5684 have you read the book? The Tommy & Greg relationship that is portrayed there is nothing like the one in movie. Dave Franco is completely wrong for the role. Sestero refused to play in The Room, until Wiseau basically promised him a salary that meant he never had to work again, and in the movie, Greg seems like groupie that would do anything for him. Just the fact that Dave is shorter and less handsome than James Franco makes it look like The Room cosplay at best.
The Room: a vanity project for the director who made himself the star. The Disaster Artist: a vanity project for the director who made himself the star...and cast his brother.
Coming back to this review now that I have seend DIsaster Artist, I feel like I am the kind of guy this movie was aimed for. I know about the room, seen reviews and heard all the stories, but I have yet to see The Room itself (we keep talk about it with friends how we will grab some beers and watch but so far no good), so I actually enjoyed this movie quite a bit. I did not mind the Hollywoody buddy comedy things between Tommy and Greg as much and the scenes where Room is made are geuinely entertaning .So I feel like someone like me is the proper audience for it. Someone who knows about the Room, but have not seen it yet.
God when Jay mentioned the Doogie episode, as soon as he mentioned what Greg says that triggered my memory and it was like Jay was in real time narrating me remembering that Doogie Howser episode. Mad
I sorta felt the same way as you when I first saw it. But something urged me to go see it a second time and something completely clicked and I ended up absolutely loving it on a second viewing.
Pretty damn funny that James Franco might get Oscar nomination for Tommy Wiseau's role. I just want to see "and the oscar goes too" and the "i did naaaht" scene on the big screen, while real Tommy gives the Oscar to Franco.
I've never seen The Room or read the book. When I see this movie, I'll let you know how I liked it. A lot of this review seems to be lamenting that it's not Ed Wood.
You know, I read the book, and it feels like the stuff leading up to the filming would have made a great film on its own, just chronicling the path that Greg Sestero took to acting in a terrible film, then his attempts to salvage and rescue a project that has everyone walking out or cursing out Tommy for his horrendous behavior. You put the film itself in the background, maybe throw in a couple scenes of Tommy's horrible acting here and there, and just focus on Greg's strained relationship with this horrible, crazy man. But, as they pointed out, Tommy would have never signed off on it, even though it makes for a better story. A shame, that.
My favorite part of the book this movie was based off of was when Greg Sestero was living with Tommy and went to go see "The Talented Mr. Ripley" at the behest of a friend. Dave Franco actually had two notes: the perplexed concerned look AND what I call the "awestruck stuttering" schtick
I am Czech (like Mike, I suppose by the name) and sadly, we do not get fed cake six months before wedding :(
If you're ever in America (or are here now), just start telling everyone that's your tradition. We'll believe you. You'll get fed SO much cake before your wedding!
@@staceyann1180 Riight... with all the political correctness... you basically gotta ;)
What I want now is a movie about the making of The Disaster Artist lol
I'm so proud of Jay coming out as one of Tommy's victim's.
All I saw was “Disaster” and figured this was The Last Jedi review.
Olysk8er Haha!
I bet you anything these guys are going to really like Last Jedi. Even Rich.
Mike and Jay will find them adorable. Rich will not.
He's a really lame actor and terrible at comedy if you ask me. Just a pretty boy with a more famous more talented brother
They need to do a feature about James Franco directed movies.
I CLAPPED BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT THE ROOM IS!!
IT BROKE NEW GROUND
I CLAPPED BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT THIS VERY ORIGINAL AND FUNNY JOKE IS
The Room: a vanity project for the director who made himself the star.
Mad
Mr Plinkett and Tony Clifton should meet.
I think someone should make a movie called 'The Disaster Hack and Frauds'
The movie starring Rich Evans and behind story of The Space Cop.

How do they work?
24:21? I thought this was gunna be another joke video with nothing but endless black screen.
I can give you something else that's endless and black.
Or 20 straight minutes of transformer noises.
Please get some Lighting Fast VCR Repair shirts in stock for Christmas.
If they had gotten Tommy and Greg to play themselves I would give this movie a 10/10, even if they changed nothing else.
Is Jay going to fall in love with Mike?
shaomin86 everyone else has!
17:21 Jay, that's Dave Franco in EVERY movie.. i'll admit sometimes it works more than others lol
I've never seen The Room or read the book. When I see this movie, I'll let you know how I liked it. A lot of this review seems to be lamenting that it's not Ed Wood.
Does anyone else think Mike does really funny impressions?
I mean, it's hard to top Rich Evans' "DO YOU BLEED", but he has his moments.
I really love the fact that there are a bunch of Blade knockoff DVDs around the background.
Keep your stupid comments in your pocket!
Great review. The level headed perspective is appreciated.
