The Heart of the Matter

I've been posted missing on You Tube over the past few weeks and for very good reason. I found myself spending almost three weeks in hospital for a double-heart bypass and a replacement aorta heart valve. I've had angina for a few years which has been increasingly slowing down my outdoor activities so it's good to get it sorted out and hopefully squeeze out a few more years of climbing hills and exploring wild places.
If any viewer is going through something similar then please get in touch if you think I may be of help and, if you have been through what I've just gone through, I'd greatly welcome words of encouragement. Open heart surgery is a big issue and we all need all the help we can get!!!
I'm based in the Scottish Highlands and I use a VW campervan to access the great outdoors, where I climb hills, ride my e-bike or gravel bike and just visit some of those places I've never been to. I've been climbing hills and mountains all over the world for 50 years and I'm a former editor of Climber Magazine and The Great Outdoors Magazine.

Something I first noticed with breathing difficulties climbing the Hidden Valley in Glencoe last autumn - - - - Like you nothing but praise for the N.H.S. and the wonderful care here in Norwich at the N&N. As you say, you never know what's around the corner, enjoy it while you can, life goes on within you - - -and without you ! ( to quote George Harrison. Take care.

    Hi Cameron,
I had a heart attack 12 months ago on the 2nd of march and needed a triple bypass ,at the time i didn't believe i would get back into the hills and out on my mountain bike but after a couple of months i started getting out into the hills again and now 12 months later i am more or less back to full fitness.
So all the things you said you wanted to do this next year i am sure you will get them done.
Have a good time getting back to fitness again .
    Kevin Ball.

    @TheHappyWanderers1 7 месяцев назад +3

Hi Cameron. Speaking as someone who had a triple heart bypass two years ago i think i speak from experience. You're overall fitness will help you recover quite quickly, i know it did for me. I was walking a couple of miles per day within a couple of weeks of my op,and im sure you will be hiking those monroes again before you know it. Listen to your body while youre healing. It takes approx 12 weeks for the breastbone to heal so no heavy lifting for a while. You will have a few dark days where you feel youre not healing fast enough but thats normal. You will get there. Good luck with your recovery. If you need any advice im here.
    All the best
    Paul

      Take care

I can empathise. Had my first heart bypass at 39. Then two stents in 2008. In all that time I've managed to continue to visit the hills and hold down a fairly stressful job in the NHS for 48 years. I'm now in my mid 60s and whilst slower I'm still going strong.

Good to hear you're recovering well and be assured by the fact that my old mountain mentor took to the hills to recuperate from his heart surgery(in his 40s) back in the 1960s and he was still climbing them up until his final illness in his 80s. My mum had a bad aorta valve and angina but it was too serious for surgery and I know how tired she got with even short strolls, so I'm sure you will know a huge difference after the surgery. Take care and we look forward to your future adventures.

Thanks for sharing this Cameron. I too have some health issues at the moment and feel rather frustrated by not being able to get out and about. I've had a long life of great outdoor stuff and it's hard to come to terms with not being as fit as I once was. However it's just a blip and I'll be back to normal soon. You have been a part of my life for a very long time although of course you are not aware of it. I first met you at Aberdeen Youth Hostel. Remember those days of hostel jobs in the morning! Sweeping out the toilets, dorms and so on. I've sort of followed your career ever since then. We're often in Newtonmore passing through on our way down South. My wife and I are both teachers of Scottish Country Dancing and attend dances regularly in Pitlochry during the Summer. We also have a campervan. I usually walk the dog up Glen Road. It's certainly an lovely location. However we're pretty lucky staying in the wee Village of Archiestown near Aberlour. Great views and you can even see parts of Ben Avon and Ben a' Bhuird from our lounge window. So this is just to wish you a speedy recovery, we'll maybe hook up one day and have a blether. All the best.

Over 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with a blocked RCA, and on a meeting with the hert specialist, we we're told that it's inoperable! When my wife challenged them, they turned round and told her that I could die
I was never given any advice on how to manage the situation, so I've carried on regardless. 8 years ago, my GP told me that I was a ticking time bomb and would eventually go off.
I've continued to get out and about, although I can't ride my mountain bike at the moment.
I'm due for a hip replacement in the next month, which is long overdue, but that's another story.
I'll be up in the Highlands in just over a week's time but definitely won't be going over the tops.
Keep on smiling, mate, and never give in!
