  • Lead Guitarist for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Drew OfThe Drew, talks with EMGtv about pentatonic scale substitutions. The Berklee College of Music grad shows how starting this basic shape on different scale degrees can create unique sounds to break you out of the traditional blues box. Maddie Rice is using the EMG 57 humbucker in the bridge and the EMG SAV single coil pickups in the middle and neck positions. i just listened to her cliffs of dover.....i love she shows her talents and not her assets like most female guitarists try to market. But she is if i can say it cute even though it doesnt seem to fit with that kind of talent.

    I *really* don't want to come across as a stalker on this: I try to capture every moment (and there aren't *enough* ) where Maddie is featured as a soloist on the break, and she's *having such a good time* and so is the audience ... Stephen, you don't feature her enough and only recognize her by name 2/3 of the time! *WATCH THIS VIDEO!* She's a *GENIUS!*

    I love EMGs. Installed them in my DeanZ. Great sound, no feedback, and grounded, so you don't get the shock off the mic. One of the guitarists in the band I was in at the time asked me to install the same ones in his Strat. Why, I don't know, but he seemed to like them better than the factory installed pickups. EMGs are that good, and often better. Internal grounding and superb sound. Even out of a small Peavey.

      Yes he does. There's a vid on youtube. The Am, Bm and Em pentatonic licks she plays are from the Dorian, Phyrgian and Aeolian modes of Gmaj scale. They are all compatible. The EbMaj7 chord she considers in Lydian mode would be compatible with the Dm pentatonic(Pyrgian) scale she plays because they both come from the BbMaj scale.

    1. If you substitute A Minor Pentatonic A-CDE-G (5th fret) with B Minor Pentatonic B-DEF#-A (7th fret) you do get the F# needed for A Dorian but you lose C and G and you get an extra B. If you play E Minor Diatonic Scale (open/12th fret) you can get the ADorian sound but you cant get it if you just play the pentatonic shape. So BMinor Pentatonic is the closest you can get it.
    2. On EMinor Pentatonic (E--G-A-B--D-E), playing AMinor (A-C-E) chord, will sound like playing iv chord of Diatonic scale, adding a 6th degree. Conversely on A Minor scale, EMinor Pentatonic will play (5, 7b, 1, 2{9th}, 4{11th})
    3. On DMinorPentatonic: (D--F-G-A--C-D), playing EbMajor7 chord: (Eb-G-Bb-D), will sound like playing (2b, 4, 6). Conversely for EbMajor 7 chord as Tonic, DMinor pentatonic notes will add (2{9th}, 3, 4#{11#}, 6{13})

      My guitar teacher showed me this as well. I knew about modes already ("about" = not practicing them) but learning how flexible the limited pentatonic scale is opens up a lot of interesting doors. You should still learn where the other notes in the scale/mode are and train your ear for intervals but this one tip in the video gives you an immediate jump forward.

      James McMillan,
      This video shows how the understanding of SOME musical structure, if applied to the guitar, yields a musicality that is all-too-absent in today's hits. I may be an old geezer, but I always did believe that without any melody it is NOT music.
      I found your remark about this video among the very few meaningful contributions to an intelligent conversation. In the nine months simce you wrote it, Maddie has only been featured maybe 1/2 dozen times on Late Night (and then typically ONLY during commercials), even though she plays most of 5 nights/week.

    • @stevep.gilfield157

      He means that if you are in the key of C major, then you can play the D minor pentatonic (2nd chord of the key), E minor pentatonic (3rd chord of the key), and the A minor pentatonic (the 6th chord of the key) and you will still sound in key.
      Hope it helps :)

    At the very end of the video, Tommy said it perfectly in just one sentence:
    "'play the minor pentatonic of the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th of the key"'
    So if the song is G Lydian (key of D), you can play the minor pentatonic scales of E (the 2nd degree of D), F# (the 3rd degree of D), and B (the 6th degree of D).

    • @leighdurlacher673
      @leighdurlacher673 2 года назад

      just to clarify, she actually suggested the 2nd pentatonic and then the 5th pentatonic scales over the A minor chord (it was an E pentatonic scale played over the A min chord) . For a major 7th chord, she used a pentatonic scale based on the maj 7th degree of the scale.
      Agree that she is an incredibly talented musician, with some very nice guitar solos! Hope we hear a lot more from her.

    • @leighdurlacher673
      @leighdurlacher673 2 года назад

      If this were jazz music, the A minor chord would by definition be the II chord of the key of G major, so the pentatonic scales shown would be the 2nd, 3 and 6 of that key. Nice demonstration of the use of pentatonic scales and why they work here!

      If it stays brown much longer, I'm going to be forced to DYE it silver --- so I don't look like an old rocker who is dying his hair brown to look younger! (A look I detest.)
