Step 11...learn to say no. Step 12 - multi-tasking is a myth. Steps 13-99 - read read read everything you get your hands on. You will never stop learning in this career.

This is an informative video. Adding to that, in the structural field, expertise in technical knowledge & software skills alone will not help. The person must have good communication skills, organizational skills, and a knack for prioritizing the work with a given time to meet the client's needs. These skills would help pave way for a successful career.

So you've asked several questions and I'll try to answer them. I am a practising engineer at a consulting firm where we mostly design buildings. The practicing engineer has to have knowledge on mathematics and physics - these will be taught at school. You don't necessarily have to be good at mathematics since the equations you find in design codes are given and most of the time you use design software or programs to make calculations faster. In the case where you'll have to quality check certain calcuations you'll have to be able to do the calculations by hand- but even then you use pre-determined equations. Just make sure you have a good undertanding of the physics like load path, failure modes, internal and external forces, equilibrium and so on. You will have enough time to learn this so no worries. Hope that helps.
