Couldn't be happier for you!!! Sorry there wasn't much that I could do to help :( Sadly I'm still waiting on all my equipment. I will most certainly point people in the direction of what you did in the future though!
Thank you! Thank you! I'm not sure anyone is doing this (softmodding ps2s) anymore, but it helped me out immensely with my phat ps2. I was about to order a pre-made FMCB card from China, but your video showed me that I could do it with an Action Replay that I had in my collection. Now to get usb loading figured out. Appreciate the video!
Yes, there are FTP .elf programs out there, but uLaunch has a built in FTP server that takes a bit of setting up. Do a google search, but basically you will use uLaunch, navigate to the MISC folder and activgate PS2Net, then connect to the IP address listed above. There will be a folder labeled hdd, only downside is that you can't make FMC boot things from the hdd, so you have to have a .elf on the MC, the partnering files can be on the HDD so long as it is linked properly.
Super thanks, this video saved my dying PS2 (laser problem) and lets me play games that I own (30+ copies) from the hard drive. TIPS: 1) Get ID from the ps1 disc trough the program, this makes sure that it is correct (free of print/input typos) - it might also be faster way of doing it. 2) If you are having trouble creating the memory card hack, try different ps1 game and USB stick - I had problem (did not boot) that went away after doing this.
To answer your questions, in order for you to play burned PS2 games, you will have to first run a gameshark like program (either gameshark, Action Replay or CodeBreakers[recomended]) or you can put an ISO onto a HDD for the fat models, or if you don't have a fat PS2, you can use (some) USB hard drives. PS1 games are relatively easy, but utilize the same concept. You need an app to initiate the play of a burned game, or you can run ISO's via the same methods stated.
thanks for the tutorial for softmodding the fat ps2, my normal usb flash drive with fat32 wouldn't work so i had to use the flash drive i got with my armax this did work, would this method work with my slim ps2. as i have both the fat ps2 and the slim ps2 models, you made it so easy to follow as i'm not technically minded. so thanks again.
I finally got a hard drive that would fit! Thanks for the video. I used it and successfully created a memory card, and am now able to run Free McBoot! HD Loader works pretty well. I have had some issues with it not accepting some games as PS2 games; which is discouraging, but I will persevere. Thanks again!
got it to work lil while after switched ps1 disc i was using grand turismo simulation disc and used same game as u metal gear solid and now im about to go ham
Glad you got it working, sometimes those files are annoying to say the least....In some cases it comes down to 1 of 3 things; 1.) the file needs to be in your System32 folder, 2.) the file needs to be in the root folder of the program you are running (most common) or 3.) the file needs to be in both System32 AND the root folder of the program.
Yes. You can install Free McBoot on any slim model PS2, however many of the features listed in my video will not be available. They have an app called Open PS2 Loader that can play ISO's from an external HDD for the slim though.
Yes, I'm not entirely sure why the PS2 has issues with larger flash drives when using AR Max or other methods, but if you have the one that came with Action Replay Max it will most certainly work.
Depends on how you are wanting to softmod; If you want to use Datel's Action Replay Max, but you have a burned backup of the original disc you will need what is called Swap Magic in order for your PS2 to read the burned disc (that or a mod chip) any other way you will need to have a retail copy of the Action Replay disc
***** NOt too sure on that one, I'd try to access the memory card reader from the OSD (Browser screen without game in PS2) and try to manually delete both files, then run through the processs again.
After endless work and toil, I managed to do this. Here are some tips that helped me, one way or another: Set drive speed to high. I first used Mortal Kombat Trilogy as my game, which didn't work. I substituted to Abe's Exoddus and it worked.
I had time this past weekend to try it again and now I was able to get it modded! I had issues with the title.db file not functioning for the boot, I guess it was not being created properly. Yet, your video is on point so as long as people follow your video as you say exactly they will get it to boot!! Also just a quick note. I ordered a FreeMcboot Card from Amazon. I read on a couple reviews that the memory card did not work on the PS2 30001 model, which I have as well. I tested it and it did not work for me. It is not an official memory card so for FreeMcboot to work on the 30001 model it must be an original PS2 (MagicGate) memory card.
Yeah, sometimes newer 3rd party cards don't work. But I only have problems with cards that are more than 64MB in that regard. Get a 16MB and you'll be good. Also I'm sorry for not keeping in touch... I did some working and started to make a new title.db builder program.
This may help some with trouble shooting issues. If possible use a older USB drive, 2gb or smaller. when formatting DO NOT choose quick format, Make sure its FAT32, and Default Allocation Size.
In order for the PS2 to read burnt discs, you MUST have some sort of retail game boot first so you can get the primary boot process out of the way; this is why we need Swap Magic or Action Replay/Gameshark/Codebreaker etc. and in regards to the HDD-OSD, it's all done on the PC end, no disc required. I'll post a link to the IDE/USB adapter in the description of the HDD-OSD video.
Thank you much mate, I'll work on grabbing me one, dying to play RE:Outbreak File 2 Japanese copy online on my ps2 (used to play Outbreak all the time before servers went down, work on bringing back the servers seems to be going well actually though (it's been closed beta testing) I'm stoked!
There are programs out there such as Partition Wizard that can force your drive to be formatted to FAT16, however I don't see why you would need to do that. The PS2 is fussy when it comes to flash drives unfortunately. there is another tutorial that covers a different method than the one I have here, you still need to place a file on the flash drive, but if you're PS2 is registering a device, you might need to download a separate .elf file to boot into the Free McBoot installation page.
Hey there! Good to hear from ya! IMG Burn and DVD Decrypter are both very good burning programs, I myself use Clone CD, all of them give you the same quality in my opinion. A good burn speed is about 8x, and as far as dual layers, I'm not entirely sure (in fact I was just about to test that today myself.) They say Verbatim is the best, however I've gotten away just fine by using a multitude of different brands. And as far a switching discs, I'm not quite sure what you mean by that one :X
I tried to open Title.db Maker v0.5 and it gives me this error. "Component 'RICHTX32.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid". What is missing?
Compatability with ESR is quite vast, and I'm sure you could find a listing with a google search. One thing to note however is different region games. There is a way to play them, however you must be sure you change the region setting on whatever HDD Loading program you are using. Most have an Auto feature but it is not always that reliable.)
No, I was telling you about HDLoader simply because that's what my video goes over, the download for the files is there and you can run Codebreaker as a stand alone. And yes, I tested a Dual Layered DVD with little success :( (all be it I tested it on a modified .iso) I'll test it more when I have time. I work 10-12 hours a day 5 days a week haha. In regards to your idea with the swap magic slider, that's a wonderful idea!!! Please let me know if you have success with it!
Worked out great for me! I just had to use a different titledbmaker and use a different Code in the save builder for PAL instead of NTSC (it is BEDATA-SYSTEM instead of BADATA-SYSTEM)
If your game was originally a Dual Layer disc based game then you must burn it to a Dual Layer disc (sorry for the misunderstanding) Simply put, a dual layer ISO is usually between 6-7GB, standard size DVD's have 4.75GB space, so the Dual layer ISO wouldn't fit.
Well the good news is you aren't completely swamped. What you will need to do is purchase a swap magic disc, this will allow you to play burned PS2 games, but there are a few extra steps you need to take with it. If you go that route then you should be golden. Of course do some research on it and see everything you will need. I've never used Swap magic, so I can't give you in depth details on it. Hope this helps!!!
Yes you can run backups from a external USB drive, however the load times are slow and the compatibility is somewhat limited. Look into a program called OpenPS2Loader, it is the best for loading ISO's from USB
I followed all of your steps and when i reset my ps2 with the ps1 disc it just freezes at a black screen after the "sony blah blah blah" i've tried different games and different memory cards nothing seems to work
Good news still, if you use the ESR.elf application you can temporarily change your PS2's region to run NTSC games. It's not 100% effective, but I've gotten it to work on two different titles (PAL version of Shadow of the Colossus, and Japanese version of Mister Mosquito)
the ESR GUI is a wonderful little program and yes, it should work just fine. As far as jailbreaking the PS3, currently the only way to do that is to buy an E3 Flasher kit, downgrade yur PS3 to 3.55 and then install whatever the latest CFW is from that (although I've heard you can downgrade to 4.30 or 4.25 now but don't quote me on that, I've yet to research it.) I have a video about that, "4.30 Jailbreak The Real Truth" I explain a lot of it in that video. Thanks for you comments!!
(can't remember, do you have the slim model?) If so, they do have a tutorial on how to add an IDE HDD to your Slim model. But it requires a lot of soldering skill as well as a modchip. OPL offers network ISO functions, but that seems like it would be quite slow...(Haven't tested it) What game are you trying to get working exactly?
a. Click on Start; in the start search type cmd. b. Right click on cmd.exe and choose to “Run as administrator”. c. Type the following command and hit Enter after each one: regsvr32 /u Comdlg32.ocx regsvr32 /i Comdlg32.ocx d. Close the command prompt and then try to run the program.
Do a google search for a PATA drive, it utilizes the IDE functions, and since straight up IDE based systems are hard as anything to find, the PATA drives more or less took over. With 80 games and roughly 4GB each, I'd say you're looking at either a 320 or 500GB drive. They can run anywhere between $60-$90 depending on where you go. I personally like Newegg and Tigerdirect
Nice video! If you ever decide to sell the memory cards, I know already I'd buy a few. I plan on doing an HDloader setup soon, but a few memory cards could make wonderful gifts/tools!
I'd be more than happy to hook you up! PM me with how many you want and we can start talking numbers ;) I'll cut you a decent deal. This goes for anyone else who's interested!!
Another member found a possible work around ( I haven't tried it yet) try unplugging, then re-plugging the USB drive and see if the file comes up that way.
I finally got the software to work after noticing the bd software was missing two components...but after everything is done my ps1 game just boots normally....please help!! I used mgs disc 1 and jetmoto and nothing
ESR Has limited comparability on games in general, not the DVD's used. and I would recommend burning them t single layer DVD's mainly because they are cheaper and burn faster. However if you are feeling ambitious give the Dual Layer a try! So far I haven't had any luck though.
You will need a PS1 memory card for it, sadly there is no way to save gamesaves to the HDD directly or a memory stick, this is code that was wired into EVERY PS2 game, so to change that, you would have to physically alter the ISO's of each PS2 game you play.
aha got it working. I am using windows 7. If anyone else gets there is a missing file from titledbmaker then right click then select properties then select unblock then follow the video and it will now work with admin rights :)
In my copy of Action Replay Max, after I deleted Your System Configuration off my memory card (it's third-party, by the way), the memory card showed up as red in the Max Memory My Devices menu. I don't know if that'll stop the softmod from working, but I know just after I got the memory card page up, it automatically went back to the Max Memory My Devices menu. By the way, why would you need to delete Your System Configuration?
Did some digging and haven't really found anything that makes it over all more different :/ Only thing would be a different driver I guess but that shouldn't matter. Did you try flashing and partitioning the flash drive to a smaller format like FAT16 or anything like that?
I tried this and all I get is a black screen when loading the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF. What am I doing wrong? Do files need to be in the right place? Or can I not do this on a Slim PS2 SCPH-77001?
Haven't gotten my hands on a slim PS2 yet, HOWEVER from what I've seen the method should be exactly the same. I'll be having a livestream tonight (7/3/2013) at around 5:00pm Pacific time (8:00pm Eastern) I'll post a link on my channel page. I'm going to be going over the process of softmodding the PS2 so by all means check it out! I'll be answering questions in real time during the stream.
Hmmm well if you want to transfer files from your flash drive over you'll need the PS2 file browser to transfer the files that way. Sometimes you can do it with AR Max, but they use an odd encryption.
Hello Cain532 What is the .dll file under? I cant find it I am getting the error richtx32.ocx every time i try and run the titlemaker exe. Please help! Thx
I've been doing a lot of reading and haven't found any (credible) sources that could softmod the PS2 with anything larger than a 2GB flash drive, once again because of the power issue. I had a 320GB external drive that I hooked up and partitioned down a bit to see if it would read (partitioned it to 5GB and put a few music files on it) the indicator lights on the HDD flashed a bit, but it never read on my PS2
Need a little more information than that friend; what kind of save are you making? are you building from scratch or modifying an original, is it PSX or PS2, what program are you using. etc.
sadly you can't backup burned games. Your best bet is to take the HDD out manually, plug it in to your computer via a IDE/USB adapter (or if you have an older PC, use the IDE ribbon) and use a program like WinHiip to transfer your games. So far that has been the easiest method I have found.
You shouldn't need to uncrush any files for this process. Should just be a folder you place into the root of your flash drive, then you run the ARMax media player, it will then bring you to the Free McBoot installation page. You can't take the exploit and manually place it on the memory card, it doesn't work that way.
Also, instead of HD Loader, the newest version of FreemcBoot came with Open PS2 Loader. Any idea how to copy games from the disk drive to the hard drive with this? Thanks in advance.
download an app called HDAdvance, or Open PS2 Loader (prefered) they have support for .ISO format games provided you have a flash drive (or external HDD) to house the files on.
Unfortunately the PS2 is real finicky about which USB drives it works best with :X your best bet it to get a hold of an Action Replay MAX USB drive (they sometimes have them at WalMarts but you're better off getting one at a second hand store) or if you can somehow get lucky enough to find an old flash drive (So far the only one that I own that works is an old 512MB Flash drive because I lost my AR MAX drive.
i only have plain action replay but i can get to that same part where you can uncruch stuff from the usb to the mem card and it doesnt see any files on the usb im using the nobbie package
Action Replay was unable to delete the Systemconfig from the memory card and crashed the system. Now i got a undeleatable new_file. Second try with a empty card plugged in after the loading screen worked and with freemc boot i could format the first card
the older the better, although I have heard that if you use a program like mini partition tool and you force format the drive to fat16 and partition a small segment (512 MB or 1GB) then that would work, but I've yet to try it myself.
Yes, from my experience, DVD-R are the only reliable media formats, and CodeBreaker is available in an .elf format! I have a video on it :D You will need the ESR GUI Patcher to run the games, I'll put it in my google drive. Easy to use, run it, drag the ISO into the box, and bam, you're done.
Well, from what I understand, are you wanting to burn two ISO's onto one dual layer disc? If tha's what you're trying to do the reason that won't work is because the PS2 doesn't have the ability to switch between two ISO forms on the same partition. So to answer your question, it SHOULDN'T be a matter of what type of DVD you burn the ISO onto, but you are limited to 1 ISO per DVD.
I have a PS3 memory card adapter that lets me hook up my PS2 memory card directly to my PC with USB. I have a couple of questions. If I got the files from you and copied them directly to my memory card would I then be able to plug my PS2 memory card into my old, fat PS2 (unmodded in any way) and then be able to play games from a hard drive? If so, is there a way to get these files online? Thanks!
hey bro every time i try to install mcboot it says decrypting dvdelf X error and i tried to put dvdelf.bin file and run it again it says the same error , so please i really need help what should i do please help
Why exactly does this only work on the fat model? Does it have something to do with the slim models checking for the watermark on the disc multiple times?
i did everything u said to do and it wont work all that happens after i uncrush to my memory card and after i take out the AR disc and put the ps1 disc i used in it just loads the ps1 game it wont work its frustrating as fuck
I'm actually pretty short on cash and the Evo Edition one is pretty pricey, I already have a USB stick too. Outside of the USB stick it comes with does the EVO edition have any features needed to do this tutorial properly? I want to boot a Japanese game off my hardrive. I saw another Action Replay Max with a similar metal case but I don't know how different it is with obvious exception to the USB stick. Thanks for the reply earlier, hope you can help me out with this. :)
I used to have a fat ps2, but that has long been since decommissioned, but has this been tested on a slim PS2 console, with and/or without the tape/tissue/straw mod?
when i open title.db maker v0.5 it says:"Component 'RICHTX32.OCX' or one of dependencies not correctly registered :a file is missing or invalid"...what i'm supposed to do?
Hello, don't know if you are reading this but i have a problem, whenever i try to run titledbmaker it says something like "Component 'RICHTX32.OCX" or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid" even tho i run it like administrator. So if you can reupload or send me a copy to email, i would be grateful. Tnx in forward
Great tutorial! Clear and concise as all good tutorials should be.
Couldn't be happier for you!!! Sorry there wasn't much that I could do to help :( Sadly I'm still waiting on all my equipment. I will most certainly point people in the direction of what you did in the future though!

c. Type the following command and hit Enter after each one:
regsvr32 /u Comdlg32.ocx
regsvr32 /i Comdlg32.ocx
I have pal ps2 yes and I tried a ntsc game but wont read so. wondered if this would help me.
+Cain532@RivalGamer hey i done this before but for some reason this is not working for me. The file on the usb not showing
You will need a PS1 memory card for it, sadly there is no way to save gamesaves to the HDD directly or a memory stick, this is code that was wired into EVERY PS2 game, so to change that, you would have to physically alter the ISO's of each PS2 game you play.
downloaded link but at 1.30 opening titledbmaker as administrator says there is a file missing and can't open the black window like you got
aha got it working. I am using windows 7.
If anyone else gets there is a missing file from titledbmaker then right click then select properties then select unblock then follow the video and it will now work with admin rights :)
Thank you for posting this. I'm sure it will help a lot of people!!
Did you try flashing and partitioning the flash drive to a smaller format like FAT16 or anything like that?
did you ever make the video for the slim ps2?
I tried this and all I get is a black screen when loading the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF. What am I doing wrong? Do files need to be in the right place? Or can I not do this on a Slim PS2 SCPH-77001?
i did all required steps ps1DB, bootelf and Bedata-system (for pal) but action replay dont show the files... can u help me please
There is a memory mod that works on both fat and slim model called memor 32.
Problem! I don't see the splash screen. When I click FREE_MCBOOT.ELF it just goes to a black screen and does nothing. :(
Oh, no bother got it to work with a different USB :)
I keep getting an error that says "component ricthx32.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered" please help
There might be a way, currently doing some research on the subject and I will present my findings in the livestram, hope to see you there!
So long as you are able to uncrush the gamesave using the My Devices function, it should work with no issue.
Two things to check, did you copy the save over or did you uncrush it? Also did you delete the system data from the memory card?
for some reason the ps2 doesn't read the files on the USB (I've tried many different ones)
Hmmm well if you want to transfer files from your flash drive over you'll need the PS2 file browser to transfer the files that way. Sometimes you can do it with AR Max, but they use an odd encryption.
I need help when I try to launch it after I did all the steps blank screen :(
Hello Cain532 What is the .dll file under?
Yes. Question though, do you have a PAL PS2 which you are trying to run NTSC games on?
download an app called HDAdvance, or Open PS2 Loader (prefered) they have support for .ISO format games provided you have a flash drive (or external HDD) to house the files on.
This worked for my ps2 and 2 of my friends, if done right it works, not a scam!!
Should work just fine if you can uncrush the save and follow the remaining bits in the tutorial.
Action Replay was unable to delete the Systemconfig from the memory card and crashed the system. Now i got a undeleatable new_file. Second try with a empty card plugged in after the loading screen worked and with freemc boot i could format the first card
I had that issue as well, glad you got it fixed though!
i cant detect my flashdrive dammit
the older the better, although I have heard that if you use a program like mini partition tool and you force format the drive to fat16 and partition a small segment (512 MB or 1GB) then that would work, but I've yet to try it myself.
Thanks!
hey bro
every time i try to install mcboot it says decrypting dvdelf X error
and i tried to put dvdelf.bin file and run it again it says the same error , so please i really need help
what should i do please help
Why exactly does this only work on the fat model? Does it have something to do with the slim models checking for the watermark on the disc multiple times?
i did everything u said to do and it wont work all that happens after i uncrush to my memory card and after i take out the AR disc and put the ps1 disc i used in it just loads the ps1 game it wont work its frustrating as fuck
So i'm guessing that if the memory card is not plugged into slot 1, I just have vanilla ps2?
Couldn't be happier for you!!!! What method did you end up using?
THANKS MAN I WAS USING COPY WHEN HAD TO USE UNCRUSH THX SO MUCH SUBBED LIEKD
after this is done, can you run a ntsc disc game on your ps2?
I'm actually pretty short on cash and the Evo Edition one is pretty pricey, I already have a USB stick too. Outside of the USB stick it comes with does the EVO edition have any features needed to do this tutorial properly? I want to boot a Japanese game off my hardrive. I saw another Action Replay Max with a similar metal case but I don't know how different it is with obvious exception to the USB stick. Thanks for the reply earlier, hope you can help me out with this. :)
Did everything you said but Ulaunch doesn't appear when I insert a psone disc.
...Or it just boots the psone disc normally. HELP!
I have a PS2 phat. I bought an internal 40 GB hard drive for it.... What can I do with this if modded?
When I go on AR max under usb nothing shows up. Also in the TITLE.DB folder its shown as TITLE.
You're the first person to mention that!!!
I used to have a fat ps2, but that has long been since decommissioned, but has this been tested on a slim PS2 console, with and/or without the tape/tissue/straw mod?
when i open title.db maker v0.5 it says:"Component 'RICHTX32.OCX' or one of dependencies not correctly registered :a file is missing or invalid"...what i'm supposed to do?
same here
Hello, don't know if you are reading this but i have a problem, whenever i try to run titledbmaker it says something like "Component 'RICHTX32.OCX" or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid" even tho i run it like administrator. So if you can reupload or send me a copy to email, i would be grateful. Tnx in forward
