for those that dont understand... the trick behind this is basically that when it reads a burned disc some sort of authorization is needed, this trick makes it so that a true disc gives an authentication code but lets a burned disc play... kinda borrowing someone card for access to a door, or letting them open the door for you and going away afterwards... ps2 games, unless more secure, should work with this as well but its hard as hell.
This does I work. In fact this is extremely simple if you have one of the first models of a ps2. The reset and eject buttons are not attached to the outer case of the ps2 so you don't have to worry about that silver band of wire disconnecting. What's even better is you only have to swap one time. YAY!!!!!!! :)
I have NEVER had to swap disks more than once. Just swap when the legit disk icon shows up in the browser (like you did), and then just boot the game and don't touch anything. Works for me. It might sometimes take a minute, but it always boots the game.
+BluffCreek Gaming OK, buddy... In this video he swaps the disk twice. I am saying if you correctly burn the game using the right tools, you don't have to swap twice, just the initial legit game swap will work.
Dr. Gaming That doesn't work. an .ELF is a disc's brain, nobody can create this. By swapping discs, you're making the .ELF file read the files on the other disc. See the hard drive? That's the master. The .ELF file gets copied to there, the master tells it to run. Before it gets told to run, the disc has to be swapped to the burned disc. That way, when the .ELF tells all the files to run, they run a different program, and the master code tells all files inside the disc to load the files. First the cutscene, then the PRESS START screen, then the menus, then all the files in the game.
+BluffCreek Gaming I don't even know what you are going on about, but my initial claim that you only have to swap once is true. I have done it many times, and it has always worked. If you want I can make you a video. I have 3 burnt ps1 games right next to me.
Dr. Gaming Okay, let's act like your comment is more important. And since you don't understand I'll say it one last time. The .ELF file is the game CD's brain. ISOs have this removed, meaning it needs the .ELF to run the files on the disc to make it load. If the .ELF file can't load any of these files, you're either going to get a black screen, or the infamous RSOD (Red Screen Of Death) These are pretty easy to get past, you just have to do it properly.
Such an amazing console, i play my Ps2 for Nba Street Vol. 2, Tekken 4, Futurama and DOA 2: Hardcore. I wish PSN had those available on the marketplace.
What is that? do you mean when I want to play copies I have to do all these things? I just want to play copies with my system closed, is anyway without gutting my PS2?
He said it didn't in the video. The reason he used it as an example is because it's easy to tell when to swap the discs. The piracy warning screen is your indicator.
This was excellent to watch. But I find it easier to mod your slim since its easier to do, but whatever you have is whatever you can use I guess. I have a question about my fat PS2. Like I went to clean my PS2 fat, and the power isn't working at all, and EVERYTHING is connected. I'm thinking its the power cord itself, but I don't have any extras. Is there any other reason besides the power cord shorting out? I even put the console back together and everything. Suggestions?
"Ok I obviously have to put this magnet back into this white thing" - well the first time I did it. I got it the wrong way so my PS2 couldn't read anything which just freaked me out a lot. But then...I thought about putting the magnet in the other way - thankfully it worked. Gosh what an experience. You need practice with this disk swapping thing. Anyway...so I think I need advice on getting PSX ISOs. =) thanks!
Hello! I have a few questions :) All right, so I THINK that I've downloaded and burned a PS2 game correctly. I hope that I've done something wrong there, because my discs won't work. So after that, I've tried your method, but I used an original PS2 rather than a PS1 game (like you did). Do you think you can help me out? It might be the download part that's wrong on my part, but IDK. Thanks though!
Wow dude...this looks awesome as hell and I can't wait to do it. I have a question about burning games...what am I supposed to do when I have 3 parts to a game and in the rar file there is an "img" file a "ccd" file and a "sub" file. I'm just sort of confused on how to actually burn it and stuff. Thanks a whole bunch for this video though!
Great vid! What type of cd do you use to burn your games to? I'm trying to use CD-R's but the iso files for the games I'm trying to burn (i.e. FFVII, Chrono Cross, Klonoa, ect.) are larger than the disk storage! (ex. FFVII .iso file is > 700MB and the disk only holds 700MB) I was just gonna do the normal disk swap on a PSX but I can't really do that if I can't put the iso on the disk!
Cool man, i haad a 2 ps2 consoles, one of them i sould to my brother i gived him the fat ps2 and i have ps2 slim. 2014 and the both ps2 runs perfect :D
@usernamethis I'm not sure what it is about the ports that get blocked off when doing this mod, but the laser doesn't like it. I've gone through 3 lasers very fast doing mods like this and when I removed the tape from these blocked ports and ran it normal, the laser was much better. I haven't looked into why this is, but I simply know from my own experience. Swap mods in general are also very hard on the drive motor, since it's being physically forced to stop spinning.
@Gameathoner wrong! what makes you think they wont be selling ps2 titles on psn when the ps4 comes out? Just like they did with ps one titles... or do you mean manufacturing them?
how many hands do u have? it is easier if you have the same game burnt and original. if the original for instance loads to game but starts to hang in some part of the game you can do the swap only once after the bootup. worked for me. but i can not do this what u showed on this video.
@nickstaforeva That cable only makes the lights on your buttons turn on. Your system should still work without it. You can fix it, but you will likely do more damage than good after that happens.
My ps2 phat looks different on the inside. I do not have that cord . My buttons are attached to the console, and also the top of the dvd drive has only 2 screws . Why ?
Damn, I "liked" this video simply because of how you ninja'd those disks at the end there... I'd never be able to swap them so fast... ergo I'll never attempt this ;)
its a good trick , but what a lot of work n hassle! interesting to watch though, how many tries did it take you before you got the whole thing down? a lot i bet! lol
isn't there an easier way to mod the ps2 like custom firmware or something? or like a hacked memcard? I mean my aunt had an awesome xbox with games, emus and all kinds of stuff on it
sorry for the third comment, but aren't those "rails" sticking out on the left side of the disk player "live"... what i mean is, don't they have an electric current running through it?
@shorty1k I did this exact same thing on my FAT Ps2, and i didn't have to block off any ports? I'm looking into geting a PSone and using this same trick but i don't want the laser to die. I'm curious as to why that happens
I'm wondering if that only works for PS1 games? I burned Mortal Kombat 3, a ps1 game, but I don't have any ps1 games so can I just put in ANY ps2 game and swap it out?
not bad video i can never do it but if you have good triming it will work and you have a good choice for gameing mgs rules i was trying to get mgs3 which i rented
@thehackman98 no, this method alone only works with ps1. you'll need to buy a cd call SWAP MAGIC then put the Swap Magic disk in the ps2 first then pull this trick for it to work on a burnt ps2 game
Any tips or knowledge on how to play burned PS2 games, (not PS1)? Do you have to do this swap every time you want to play the game, or just once? How does this swapping affect region codes? Thanks!
Mine had no cable... What's the cable for? I opened it up and there was literally nothing there. In the middle of modding it, hopefully it'll work when I'm done.
Though I find this method fascinating, it seems like a little too much trouble and stress to be worth the effort. I may try it out, if I feel brave enough but I think I should look elsewhere, thanks anyway! :) Also, does this work with PS2 (edit: looking back at this comment, I'm pretty sure I meant to say PS1, oops) games as well?
+BluffCreek Gaming Nah, too much trouble. Also, looking back at my year-old comment (in all honesty, I don't even remember posting this), at the end, I'm pretty sure I meant to ask if burned _PS1_ games also worked with the mod.
+BluffCreek Gaming Jesus, cool your jets a little will ya. I'm not _saying_ I don't have the time to do this mod, in fact, I never implied that to begin with, I was simply clarifying my question that I made so long ago that I don't even fucking remember posting it to begin with. Not sure why you're getting so bent out of shape over me asking a question, sheesh.
LordHEF Explain how I got bent "out of shape" when I was telling you that instead of asking how backed up discs run, you can discover that for yourself?
Guys..i saw a show on tv years ago about how to upgrade the ps2 video card to enhance the graphics...i havent seen any video post here on youtube about such thing..according to that show.. the ps2 has geforce 2 as its video card that you can upgrade it to geforce 3..pretty much deals with electronics and some software mods...
Hey I got a question. I got a fat ps2 and I do tried the hotswap with my san andreas and it gets all laggy and freezes. Also when I swap Instead of the playstation 2 symbol it takes me to this thing where its all red and saying '' Please insert a playstation or playstation format game''
hey my ps2 is not fat! it's big boned
***** they are :D
Hahaha in this case it would be true, but "It's big ironed" would be a better joke lol
I didn't watch it for the "how to" I watched it for his Über ninja skills!
Awesome Video!

perfect just what i wanted to know
this is how i was doing it on my ps3
didnt know if it worked the same on ps2
I finally got this method to work. Thanks for the tutorial dude. Timing is absolutely everything
I have NEVER had to swap disks more than once. Just swap when the legit disk icon shows up in the browser (like you did), and then just boot the game and don't touch anything. Works for me. It might sometimes take a minute, but it always boots the game.
+Dr. Gaming Explain without having your grammar all over the place.

...or you could just use a Slide Card (homemade with a Credit Card or even any plastic thing) to swap the disks.
Nice video dude :o.
thx dude my ps2 is destroyed and i will have to buy a new one all because i followed ur instructions thax man i wish i could get u :)
Such an amazing console, i play my Ps2 for Nba Street Vol. 2, Tekken 4, Futurama and DOA 2: Hardcore. I wish PSN had those available on the marketplace.

lol its so funny how u quickly change it, btw thx this is a good tutorial!
@JohnMurrill
Hi JohnMurril! you were just recently helping me with the KH2FM patcher stuff haha
Can run DVDs too?
The menu trick only works on V9 and up models, you have to boot the system with the disc already in the console to swap if your PS2 is V8 and lower.
Wow dude...this looks awesome as hell and I can't wait to do it. I have a question about burning games...what am I supposed to do when I have 3 parts to a game and in the rar file there is an "img" file a "ccd" file and a "sub" file. ROFL dude, pro as hell when swapping discs lol, NINJAAAAA
Great vid! What type of cd do you use to burn your games to? Or use the swap magic discs which require taking off the front of the cd drive only. No opening your console when you use swap magic.
Cool man, i haad a 2 ps2 consoles, one of them i sould to my brother i gived him the fat ps2 and i have ps2 slim. 2014 and the both ps2 runs perfect :D
How to mod / run backup games on your fat ps2
thnx for the upload great video!!
one question tho will this work with trying to play cutsom songs with guitar hero
Now i dont have to look from store to store for games tht i want ... thnk you so much
Everytime I beat a game in ready 2 rumble on arcade mode it always clickin
@Gameathoner wrong! what makes you think they wont be selling ps2 titles on psn when the ps4 comes out? Just like they did with ps one titles... or do you mean manufacturing them?
It's not actually illegal if you own the original game. Just like using an R4 card for a nintendo DS or ROMs on a PC.
Why not just install a modchip and be set to play imports and backups?
how many hands do u have?
it is easier if you have the same game burnt and original. if the original for instance loads to game but starts to hang in some part of the game you can do the swap only once after the bootup.
worked for me. but i can not do this what u showed on this video.
Does electrical tape melt if you put it inside your ps2
Thank you. Took the words right out of my brain.
Is ps2 lazer safe.i dont wnt to be blind
no
you don't want to really look at it, but based on sound cues the assembly makes you can know when to look away.
@nickstaforeva That cable only makes the lights on your buttons turn on. Your system should still work without it. You can fix it, but you will likely do more damage than good after that happens.
I can confirm that you can use syphon filter the omega strain to soft mod the PS2 fat. But you're going to need the PS2 Network adapter.
I had slim and a fat ps2 but the fat one the red thing didnt even come up and read the disk can anyone help me?
do that white plastic thing lock a disc so that doesnt fly away or why do that just keep a disc on reader wheel
whats the point? you have to have a real copy of the game to do this....so why bother ?
his burned game is metal gear solid. he was using the real game which was gran turrismo to confuse it into playing the burned game
Woo! I just did this with a slide tool, took a few tries but very doable if you do it fast.
How do you put the silver tape like into the ps2? Help please.
It has to be a ps1 game that you use during the disc swap? it can't be a ps2 game?
Edit: nvm just read video description
@19ruler76 you use the original only to start the ps2. after that you switch it. So you have only one original game and unlimited backups :)
can you see the laser on that because i want to do the gh2 swap trick or do i need to go a step further
i have a fat ps2 but i have a ps3 super slim but i miss the days when i was playing ps2.!
This doesnt work for me? i do everything you say but it wont play back up games?
My ps2 phat looks different on the inside. I do not have that cord . My buttons are attached to the console, and also the top of the dvd drive has only 2 screws . Why ?
Does it also work with PS2 games?
edit: NVM I'm trying it rn
Do you have to block the sensors, or is that only with the slim ps2?
Damn, I "liked" this video simply because of how you ninja'd those disks at the end there... I'd never be able to swap them so fast... ergo I'll never attempt this ;)
so can you play burn disk games?
When your swapping your games does it matter if your swapping a dvd or cd to play the burnt game?
Is the Gran Turismo a original disc? Acctually, do I need two ps1 games? One of them must necessarily to be a original disc?
its a good trick , but what a lot of work n hassle!
interesting to watch though, how many tries did it take you before you got the whole thing down? a lot i bet! lol
Not to be rude but but buy a Xbox 360 and flash it and then you can download new games.Anyways good work on the video it will help my buddy out.
isn't there an easier way to mod the ps2 like custom firmware or something? or like a hacked memcard? I mean my aunt had an awesome xbox with games, emus and all kinds of stuff on it
sorry for the third comment, but aren't those "rails" sticking out on the left side of the disk player "live"... what i mean is, don't they have an electric current running through it?
Do u have to keep it disassembled?
ok so i get a normal ps1 game and swap it with a differnt burnt ps2 game and it will work?
So after the ps2 is being mod its gonna stay opened up to play burnt games? It has to?
can you do this with a ps2 game too?
i mean i have a ps1 game too butt just wondering man let me know plese
Whats the point? You still need to have original game???
So, do I have to do this EVERY TIME when I want to play a backup game? Or I have to do this only ONCE?
Every time but i found that i only have to swap disks once
Would opening the disk tray with a swap key work instead of taking it apart?
@shorty1k I did this exact same thing on my FAT Ps2, and i didn't have to block off any ports? I'm looking into geting a PSone and using this same trick but i don't want the laser to die. I'm curious as to why that happens
Why do you need to change disks when it changes speeds?
i doubt it why would you need swap magic if you could do this?
Do you know hard that's going to be to swap when it says to put in disc 2 of Metal Gear Solid?! I wonder how that works
What else can I use besides the white thingy you used? Please tell me, this is so easy if it doesn't require anything..
I have a game for ps2 original and then put the copied game for ps2 and do all that you say but I did not read it for what reason?
dude wtf I swap the disk (rayman 3 for ff12 burned in dvd-r) when Playstation2 logo pops but it comes back and says the cd isnt compatible. HELP?!
@thehackman98 no, this method alone only works with ps1. you'll need to buy a cd call SWAP MAGIC then put the Swap Magic disk in the ps2 first then pull this trick for it to work on a burnt ps2 game
You , my friend , owe me a new ps2. -_-
do you have to do that every time you wanna play any bacl up/burned game?
Any tips or knowledge on how to play burned PS2 games, (not PS1)?
Do you have to do this swap every time you want to play the game, or just once?
How does this swapping affect region codes?
Thanks!
I found out that gamestop is selling used ps2 fats for 50 dollars. Should I pick one up? I have never owned a ps2. Been using psp.
What is the CD u put first is that runbackup CD how to modify
does this only work with ps1 back ups or do u just need to have the swap disk as a ps1 game? thanks for your time.
What kind of disk can i use some of my games are cd-roms or dvd-r or +r's?
Mine had no cable... What's the cable for? I opened it up and there was literally nothing there. In the middle of modding it, hopefully it'll work when I'm done.
do you need to do that every time to play a back up and do you need to put a ps1 game in
Though I find this method fascinating, it seems like a little too much trouble and stress to be worth the effort. I may try it out, if I feel brave enough but I think I should look elsewhere, thanks anyway! :)
Also, does this work with PS2 (edit: looking back at this comment, I'm pretty sure I meant to say PS1, oops) games as well?
+LordHEF If you want to find out if it works with PS2 games as well, take the time and mod it yourself.
+BluffCreek Gaming Nah, too much trouble.
Also, looking back at my year-old comment (in all honesty, I don't even remember posting this), at the end, I'm pretty sure I meant to ask if burned _PS1_ games also worked with the mod.
LordHEF
You don't have time to mod a PS2, but yet you have time to post that comment?
+BluffCreek Gaming Jesus, cool your jets a little will ya.
I'm not _saying_ I don't have the time to do this mod, in fact, I never implied that to begin with, I was simply clarifying my question that I made so long ago that I don't even fucking remember posting it to begin with.
Not sure why you're getting so bent out of shape over me asking a question, sheesh.
LordHEF Explain how I got bent "out of shape" when I was telling you that instead of asking how backed up discs run, you can discover that for yourself?
@shorty1k how is it hard on the laser? just curious
is the wire going from the ps2 to the lid important because i have a fat ps2
Does this work with only ps1 games or ps2 games as well?
i don't see the warning sign sign thing you get
do i have to do this procedure once or everytime i want to play that burnt game?
u could always play ps1 games in the fat ps2?
Yes there is there this little slot you can put it back in, it took me like half an hour of fiddling to get it in.
Guys..i saw a show on tv years ago about how to upgrade the ps2 video card to enhance the graphics...i havent seen any video post here on youtube about such thing..according to that show.. the ps2 has geforce 2 as its video card that you can upgrade it to geforce 3..pretty much deals with electronics and some software mods...
u have a good video but the only thing is do u have to keep ur ps2 broken and ugly like that if you wonna play burnt disks or can u fix it up a bit.
Hey I got a question. I got a fat ps2 and I do tried the hotswap with my san andreas and it gets all laggy and freezes. Also when I swap Instead of the playstation 2 symbol it takes me to this thing where its all red and saying '' Please insert a playstation or playstation format game''
Instead of burned games, can it work with different region games too? And do you have to do it every time you put in the same game?
I did that and I got shocked
LMAO
I opened my ps2 and and there was no silvery tape. Did i do it wrong?
Hey so when i switch the cds and put the not real one it stops spinning after i put the not real one back in
