My grandpa said to throw the seeds in the dirt and walk away. Amazingly, it worked for him. He left plants with seed pods each year and would always have volunteers the next year.
This is what I'm going to do tomorrow as a test... Luke on MIGardener also said okra loves clay soil, so I'm go to throw a few seeds in my clay soil tomorrow morning, water it in and walk away.. I'll let you know the result... 😁

I eat 80-90% of the okra I eat, fresh, raw and before I leave the garden! No salt, no washing, cut and consume! By far my favorite way to eat it.

You can lighty apply a little olive oil and your favorite seasoning and broil it in the oven.
I have found that planting okra seeds very close together and in rows keeps the plants from being bushy and also keeps the fruits the perfect size for picking and eating.

How far apart do you plant them apart?
@@nicolipotatski6288 I literally plant the okra seeds as close as possible. That's how I found out that they don't bush out with their spiny leaves as much and the fruits stay an acceptable picking size.

I just love Okra too. Not cooked as much as fresh off the stalk! So sweet and yummy! Can’t wait to grow again. My last was about 9 feet tall
Tired of using a step ladder to pick? Top your plants off at about 5 1/2 feet and watch them explode with more production. They will have side sprouts,that all produce more fruit.
@@codyjackson57 I couldn’t keep up with it all last time but cutting it back it’s not a bad idea. The stalks are so thick we have to use the Saw to cut them down
Mine last season were only about 5ft tall but the base when I finally cut them down was about 2in diameter. I was getting 5-6 per plant a week.
@@codyjackson57 Had an old farmer tell me that every July 4th he cut his okra down to knee level said it would produce more and be tender like when it first started bearing plus he didn't have to climb to get it. :)

My new favorite way to eat it is dehydrated with salt, pepper, and cumin. No breading... so good!
I’m going to try that! Thanks for sharing it. I usually run out of ways to process my harvest quickly. Throwing in my dehydrator with some seasoning would be perfect!

I love Baker Creek, I got their big catalog, got it in the bathroom, kinda like the old Sears catalog. All my seeds this year are from them, great success
Love okra and have grown several kinds. Usually grow a burgundy variety, Texas hill country red (shorter fatter pods good for frying), and a green variety called Jambalaya. Always grow too much but it is great dehydrated with a pinch of salt. Better than potato chips, can’t put them down. Great in gumbo and other soups or just a pot of beans with sausage ( don’t forget the cornbread). It freezes well. Newest discovery… grilled okra tacos -amazing!

I like to throw a few pods on the top of my pinto beans to boil with them near the end of cooking time. Don't cut through the cap and it won't make your beans slimy. So if you're the only one that enjoys boiled okra you can have your okra. They are delish this way!!! Much Love and Blessings

I grew Alabama Red Okra last summer. The pods were short, fat and delicious. The flowers are beautiful on all okra.

I grew Jing Orange Okra last summer and enjoyed the abundance.
I grew the Jing Orange also and loved it, very prolific and beautiful. I grew about 18 plants pretty close together in a 100 gallon grow bag and it did very well up until mid December. I’ll be doing that again.

So pretty! I grew the pink okra from Baker Creek last year. I also tried Burpee's Bubba hybrid which is a container friendly variety and it was just as productive and hardy as its massive cousins, okra is an amazing plant. It just thrives on miserable heat and neglect. If only the aphids would leave it alone.

Some like to cook fresh speckled butter beans and put okra about 3 to 4 inches whole for the last 30 minutes.
I like it fried or in vegetable soup.

Have you looked into ‘no dig’ gardening method ? I think it might help you improve your soil quality 😊
I live in San Antonio, TX and Jing Orange okra has outproduced other varieties I’ve grown. Longer pods are more tender, it’s got a milder flavor, less slimy, and it even turns green when cooked. Jing Orange is my favorite. This year I grew “Heavy Hitter” from Baker’s Seed and the Jing Orange outperformed it. The plants can get up to 12 feet tall here, but bend easily to harvest. I also noted that Jing Orange doesn’t stick me as much as the others do, such as the Red Burgandy or TX Hill Country Red. It loves the heat and thrives in drought conditions. It was the last variety to start producing, but once it starts it produces so much more okra. Love it!

The first time I had it I did not like it as I found it very slimy. I now have it in soups and stews or stir fried with mixed vegetables.
I lost you for a few years but have started to follow you again. I noticed you have moved to Florida and a larger property...Congratulations. I assume the high fence to to keep deer out of your garden.
Welcome back. Yes, moved to Florida November 2017. Yes, the high fence is because of deer and other wildlife. Our new homestead is rural and wooded

seasonings in the bag, shake shake shake it, roast in the oven on 400 until done to your

Great video I love the color of that okra most of the time I grow LA Green Velvet also known as Louisiana green velvet because it freezes so well and I have grown the Clemson spineless and it grows good too and lower Alabama I may have to look up that red okra and see how it grows in my neck of the woods in zone 8

I agree that Is some beautiful Okra I normally just grow the Clemson Spineless Okra In my garden I well definitely have to keep that variety in mind anyway when you plant your Okra seed other Then adding compost do you add anything else to your soil
Have you ever tried freeze dried okra? It is very delicious. I bought a bag at a market called Sprouts - they had other vegetables in the bag. It was nice and crunchy!

Man, if you have a poor crop, with that many plants you will be buried in okra! I did 6 okra plants a few years back and pickled every pod, I had pickled okra for 3 months. Of course I ate a pint jar every three or four days.

I’m going to try planting some in 5 gallon bucket’s. Where I live the maintenance guy sprays bug killer along the walls and I don’t want to be ingesting that. Hope it works because I love okra. 😁

When you plant seeds directly in the ground. When Do you fertilize .
I know with seed starting in the seed starter cups, you don't fertilize. But the ground already has previously been fertilized with the last crop
If it has been longer than 3 months since you fertilized, add fertilizer to the ground and cultivate to incorporate it with the soil prior to direct sowing your seeds
