  • I have always said do what wishes for you. In this video I discuss the importance of using Promoted Listings Standard and why it is more important than ever to consider using it. Promoted listings has become a huge part of eBay’s business model and people who refuse to use it may see slower sales in the future. Check out the video and let me know your thoughts down below. Remember, I’m no shill for eBay, just a person like you trying to figure it all out.

I love your intro, Jon. Don’t change it. It is your unique style. Thanks for talking about this topic. I don’t think Promoted listings weigh that heavily at this time on what sells. I have as many buyers click on my items when they are not sponsored as when they are sponsored.

If you're picking the right kind of items, there should be no need to promote. Majority of sellers have lots of common stuff worth less than $25 and are struggling with the race to top on promotions and race to bottom on prices. The first step is to accept this reality, stop buying these items and move forward purging your store. It really doesn't cost that much to appease the algorithm by promoting and running sales on your junk, which will in turn drive sales of your good items.

eBay appears to be winning with promoted listing. It appears to be a "race to the bottom for sellers". If everyone gets on board to promote, they will request and influence the seller to increase their percentage. When is enough, ENOUGH. Time for me to pivot...

Also, keep in mind that many people don't even search ebay directly, they use google, and google lens. Part of ebay's strategy is for their items to come up high in these searches too. A good clear photo that has an excellent contrast background is important.

Thanks Jon for the mention. Ebay published a detailed flow chart with textual explanation with examples of how the algo has been redesigned and how it variously evaluates, weights, ranks characteristics of each listing, seller, business rules, etc. Whether the listing has a version of Promoted Listings and the $ amount of potential PL revenue to Ebay if sold is only one area of many factors contributing to how the algo scores any particular listing. It's not a black box. ****What ultimately matters most to the algorithm is identifying and ranking the subset of listings that are most relevant to any particular buyer's search and are most likely to result in a sale and revenue to Ebay.****

I was a holdout - Then in July I added promoted at 5.1%. The jury is still out for me because I sell such a variety of stuff. My sales were good before I promoted, and they are good now. My year to date net sales are up 14% over the same period in 2022. Was it because of promoted listings or did I pick better items to sell in 2023?
So I guess what I am saying is that in 2023 my sales were good before promoting and they are also good after promoting.
Do I think my sales will die if I don't promote? No, because I had good sales before I promoted. Did I make more sales after promoting? Yes, but my net is about the same or maybe just a bit better, or again did I just have better items to sell?

As if eBay taking 12% isn't enough GREED on their part, promoted listings just makes their cut even larger. It's BS and it needs to STOP! That 12% INCLUDES the item selling price added to the shipping added to the TAX the buyer paid. How the hell can that be legal? Makes me really want another selling venue. You have made some good points, but I don’t think you are exactly on the mark with your examples. eBay does use a nearest-neighbor (k-NN) algorithm to try to supply the highest number of accurate search results quickly. However, I think you are underestimating the AI as well as the buyers.
The reason for (1) item specifics and (2) title keywords and (3) the item photo itself (becoming increasingly more important) is to give the AI more opportunities to really understand what an item is. AI imaging uses more than 700 attributes from the main item photo to help determine where that item “lives” within the machine.
Maybe a photo of an old lady was taken at a studio in Racine, WI. Maybe she’s Native American. Maybe she has a hook for a hand. These are the details that collectors search for because collectors tend to be specific.
To be fair, a simple photo of an old lady that does not have any unique, special, or specific attributes is probably not worth listing in the first place.
I don’t think your search example really proves anything meaningful in terms of converting a sale. Yes, a grandma t-shirt that was promoted appeared in the search, but the search was supposed to be for an old photo. That just provided a meaningless impression for that t-shirt. The odds of someone looking for an old photo and deciding to buy a t-shirt is about zero.
Am I happy with my sales? Meh. But I’ve tried promoting and it was still meh. It doesn’t seem to be the answer for me. I’m back to converting at 3.5%, up 25% for the last 30 days, approaching pre-April levels, but would always like a little more. Some of my biggest money-makers are old photos.
I will also argue that PL has possibly reached its ceiling in Q3. eBay took $345M in fees, while taking $341M in fees in Q2. It barely moved! I’m very interested to see where Q4 ends up, but if it’s under $350M for PL, that gravy train will have slowed to a crawl.
It is distasteful for sellers to promote at 30% with a base fee of 13.5%. Casual sellers will just move on if they have to give eBay almost half. Full-timers will do the same.
I don’t feel that promoted listings are the future any more than they probably are right now. We’ll see what Q4 says.
I have a feeling that right now, people are just picking a number from the air in terms of their promotion percentage. Or they’re letting eBay pick their number for them (bad idea). The people who do need to promote need to figure out their sweet spot numbers. The smart ones will.
