I've said it probably 20 times and I'll say it a million times over until you guys listen. You NEED to dedicate a day to the NIN catalog.
2 this
PHM just straight through
do as this guy says!
I agree
Hell yes!
The day I saw NIN I cried. I seriously wept tears of joy. Everything off: “Pretty Hate Machine” was my childhood mantra, and Trent is a masterpiece musician.
Same
Pretty hate machine all through highschool with 4 ten inch woofers with bass tubes!!!!
pretty hate machine was my introduction, momma loved "head like a hole" , I like ringfinger.
Everyone should see them live, at least once, in their life. Unbelievably good.
trents age is really starting to show, his shows are still fine but not at all what they used to be
Disagree. Red Rocks was lit.
Had that joy this year. Never thought I'd have the chance but fortune smiled. Best concert I've ever seen in 50 years.
I see this as an introspective.
He believed in the image of himself that had grown over the years. That hubris led him to damaging moments in his life.
Look behind the image and there's nothing there, it's not real, instead it's just Trent himself.
The pin cushion desk toy is a reflection of himself but you never truly see him.
Love it.
Nice
Solipsism..
Great song and great video! The video was directed by none other that David Fincher (Fight Club,Se7en,etc) he did a lot o music videos and some of the most amazing movies ever made. They work a lot together in these movies, Trent and Atticus made the music for Gone Girl, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Social Network, Mank! They work really well together ;) That video was 100% CGI, btw.
For Industrial bands, the 2 forefathers would have to be Ministry and Skinny Puppy... both of them were huge influences for Trent Reznor.
Ministry is awesome...I fucking love the song "just one fix" and I think they should react to it.!!
Damn It! I forgot about Skinny Puppy. I saw them on the Vivisection tour.
Damn. Bringing it back. Saw Ministry twice. Skinny Puppy was awesome but I always remember the Skinny Puppy people. They were intense. Front 242 was also awesome.
Ministry opened up for NIN when I saw them last August and you could tell Trent had a huge amount of respect for them.
Throbbing Gristle, Front 242, and My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult are also early purveyors of industrial and, being from ATL, I can't believe no one brought up Sevendust. There's also an argument for Slipknot, Mudvayne, StaticX, White Zombie/Rob Zombie, Filter, Kidneythieves, Evanescence, and Prong falling into the industrial category, not to mention In This Moment and Motionless In White's more recent albums taking on more of an industrial kind of feel. Also, Celldweller/Circle of Dust should not be forgotten.
Soooo glad you reacted to this song! The video always trips me out but this song is one of my favorite off of this album (every day is exactly the same, & the hand that feeds are two songs you should totally react to!!) Nine Inch Nails has me by mu heart strings. So much nostalgia!!
If you want to take a deeper dive in industrial acts I would suggest checking out:
Skinny Puppy: "Dig It"
Front Line Assembly: "The Blade"
Coil: "Love's Secret Domain"
Ministry: "Burning Inside:
My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult: "After the Flesh"
Both Coil and Skinny Puppy were influences on NIN.
any skinny puppy 😍
Marilyn Manson was actually discovered by Trent Reznor. In fact, if you watch the video for Gave Up by NIN you'll see a young Marilyn Manson on guitar 🤘🔥
Duh!!
Oh FUCK YES!! More NIN please.
You two just made my day. Much love!!
And this is what Trent Reznor said the song is about-its about the music business clashing with his artistic desires.
I've liked everything I've heard from NIN. Need to do a deep dive. Reznor signed Manson before they fell out so you were right they had a similar style.
Jonny, I agree 💯 The rabbit hole needs to be visited
Yes! Deep dive!!
Gave Up is a collaborative piece between the two. It bangs.
Oh, I've waited for your reaction to this song!
NIN is one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen! Always loved this video. And his wife is 🔥😍
‘Wish’ or ‘March of the Pigs’ 😊
We (you and I) already had the Mariqueen convo 😆. She's a smoke show!!
@@KP-xn7bq omg yes!! I’m so jealous of him! 😆😩
Gonna try to make this long story short... I had some tickets to fall in my lap for the Made in America concert they held a few years ago when NIN was the headliner.
It was essentially a festival (multiple stages, bands/groups/DJs). I was all alone (Mary Jane was w me to keep me company) and was able to get 25 feet away from front and center on stage when NIN came on stage.
A bucket list item was checked that night. I was basically front and center for my fav band of all time. It's a moment I'll never forget.
Please, homies, let's go Further Down the Spiral and deep dive NIN.
#Trent Reznor Thursdays
My favourite band, ever. I have two NIN tattoos and have seen them 12 times.
I am so happy that you have done a reaction to this song, very underrated.
Please do more NIN!!
I went to 6 shows on one of their tours, and it was with Queens of the Stone Age - made me a bigger fan of theirs too! You should look more into them also!!!
This is possibly the grooviest funkiest jam i know. Swear to God when I need a lil pep in my step, I jam the intro build up
Looooove you guys finally get into some deeper cuts of NIN!
So fucking close my guys. Keep them comeing!!!
Great album, do try "the hand that feeds" and "sunspot" from this album... also check out "capital g" "god given" and "survivalism" from the album year zero that comes after this. U can never go wrong with NIN.
Yesss. This song is a vibe. This whole album is a vibe. NIN is a vibe.
With Teeth and Pretty Hate Machine are two of my favorite NIN albums. Something I Can Never Have, Sunspots, Ringfinger are all great ones. Off their Add Violence album Less Than and This Isn't the Place you should react to as well. Maybe you guys need to have a NIN Mondays. Great reaction to this one guys!
Sunspots is insanely brainwormy.
Actually I would say Genisus P. Orridge from Throbbing Gristle was the godfather of industrial. This was back in the 70s by the way.
You can't forget the others in that band, they all had a part in it, and Coum Transmissions before that.
You can't hide my isolation .. dude .. I was late to this party thank God for RUclips and the hours I spend on it wow .. just off the cuff .. Miley Cyrus in her episode on the Black mirror at the end playing.. Head Like a Hole ..with the little kids running out screaming .. it was awesome and it gave me a whole new appreciation of Miley that episode .. edit .. that line is from .. Closer .. I'm old , let it go .. but this CD is what brought me in .. I only knew Closer prior to .. I only made you up to hurt myself .. then I went down the rabbit hole .. 🖖
David Fincher (Se7en, Gone Girl) directed that video.
Other Industrial bands stabbing westward, econoline crush, filter, spineshank, fear factory, god head, gravity kills, ( there is also the goth sub culture of industrial)…
Stabbing Westward,Filter, Fear Factory, Gravity Kills all are worth a look or listen.
As someone who grew up mostly listening to all things rock/metal and country, I have never been big on synthesizers and EDM oriented music. Nine Inch Nails has always been a huge exception with how Trent brings out catchy beats that still have that bite of angst and ominous tones that his lyrics and guitar work bring out. A ton of more recent acts owe Trent and other industrial acts for their current success.
Another big industrial band of the 80's you two should check out is Ministry, idk if you've reacted to them yet. Songs I suggest are Stigmata, Psalm 69, Thieves, So What, Jesus Built My Hotrod, N.W.O. or Just One Fix to name a few greats by them.
Ministry, skinny puppy, and nine inch nails are the founders of industrial music
yall are amazing and deserve much more recognition🖤🖤
Ministry is definitely a big industrial band. I saw them at the Tabernacle in March with the Melvins and my ears rang for 4 days straight because they both play LOUD. Would love to see NIN someday.
Love ministry!!!
Ministry I definitely would consider industrial. Jesus Built my Hotrod, NWO, Just One Fix. I think them and NIN pretty much set the foundation for that style of music.
@@matthewdrake4385 if I recall correctly, I read somewhere that Ministry inspired Trent Reznor
I could totally see that
His live performances are incredible and he puts a lot of work into the production values of his concert videos.
His live performances are intense. You feel every ounce of energy from the front all the way to the back.
Even the more recent stuff like "Tension" at the Staples Center, those videos are all over Yt and worth a look.
Lol I like the highlander intro question
You guys are forgetting another industrial metal ministry and ministry lead singer Al Jourgensen is considered the godfather of the genre
If you read Marilyn Manson's book he actually says Trent Reznor was a big part of him getting started
Well I'm sure a lot of you guys probably know Trent produced Marilyn Manson's first two albums and helped write a couple of the songs on the second album Antichrist Superstar
I will forever love NIN. I HIGHLY recommend checking out March of the Pigs, Wish, Gave Up, Somewhat Damaged, The Wretched. Just so many great songs.
Hey by the way, Trent Reznor signed manson and produced mansons first two albums
This was from the album With Teeth, which originally had a concept of a guy finding his way into another world, and being kinda stuck and not being able to get back home, but the concept kinda got looser and the end result is not really telling that story any more, but there's some songs that are still parts of it, and this was one of them.
Morning guys! More NIN!!! FOR SURE!! ❤️🤓
Fear Factory were one of the first Industrial Metal bands, and there is a distinction between Industrial, and industrial Metal
Rad song and some of the live performances of it are insane.
David Fincher directed the video, and he is responsible for the movie Se7en, Fight Club, Panic Room, Zodiac, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and many other visually stunning movies. Fincher is extremely talented at using VFX in a way that you don't even realize they're being used. Trent Reznor of NIN went on to score a good chunk of Fincher's films.
All the scrolling I did to find just ONE comment that mentioned David Fincher directed this video! THANK YOU! 😭😂😂
Another one of my favorite songs by another one of my favorite bands of all time.❤️🔥
I got to see Trent live in Toronto. Absolute FIRE. And It's called a "Newton's Cradle".
Seen NIN 10-15 years ago, Tom Morello (RATM) was guest guitarist, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen! Highly recommend taking a journey through the catalog. Trent is a genius.
I love Tom Morello and I didn't know played some with NIN. It doesn't surprise me tho. They are both musical geniuses
@@susanwagner900 I think it was a guest appearance. We were completely shocked and amped when he walked out.
I'm so fucking jealous!!!
I’ve seen NIN twice, once with Soundgarden. Great shows 😁
Please do more stuff from the With Teeth album. Dave Grohl drummed on some of the tracks.
I love Trent Reznor and NIN, but he's not the godfather of industrial. He's for sure the best-known and most talented industrial musician these days, but in my perception a godfather would be someone who started it all and there are definitely artists who made industrial before NIN. Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Einstürzende Neubauten or Die Krupps all started in the early 80s and even they were inspired by artists like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire or Fad Gadget. Could be that Throbbing Gristle were the very first so that Genesis P. Orridge would be the originator and - if you want to call him that - the godfather. However it's a very versatile, wide and interesting genre to explore, all artists that you named are mainly industrial metal, but when the genre started it was more like experimental electronics and machine sounds. I hope you'll dive deeper into it, it's worth it.
I have a little trivia question for hollywood and smokey, what does Jane's addiction irresistible force, korn never never and love & meth, fleshgod apocalypse monnalisa and sugar have in common? Smokey asked for this 2 years ago.
Dang you got us on this one. What is it?
@@Hollywood6IX the singer of ODDKO is the director. Who do you think pointed that out to me lol. He loves your channel.
@@Hollywood6IX I didn't even know you reacted to fleshgod apocalypse sugar until he sent me the link. Didn't get that far back in your library yet.
Can never go wrong with NIN. Also, Manson got started because of Trent, who has his own production company, signed them on and pretty much made Marilyn Manson a household name.
NIN is maybe the most underrated and unknown of all the 'big' bands, in my opinion. not sure why. i love them. Trent is so talented.
Pure genius at work here.
i interpret it as sort of the idea you have of someone your either friends with or dating and having that idea of them shattered when they do something to hurt you that you thought they would never do. he talks about not fitting into "you're world" because it "doesn't really matter anymore" as if used to care but maybe after being hurt by them and learning the truth he wants nothing further to do with them. the line "because you were never really real to begin with" and "i just made you up to hurt myself" and also "things aren't as pretty on the inside" are sort of him realizing after getting hurt that the version of this person he thought he knew and cared about was a lie and just a facade hiding their true personality that doesn't actually exist and that maybe to some extent its his own fault for not seeing the signs sooner as he chose to ignore the red flags because he wanted the lie to be true
its hard to explain it well i guess but its something i relate to having been through a similar situation.
So glad you're back in NIN.... But you definitely gotta do Reptile or The Wretched or Somewhat Damaged. 🔥🔥🔥
If you want to dip more than a toe into industrial check out Skinny Puppy. Or Ministry in the Land of Milk and Honey to Psalm 69 era.
loooove Skinny Puppy
I'm tempted to join the patreon to get my suggestions on lol
A surprising choice at first but such an amazing song. My sleeper NIN fave track is Me, I’m Not. I listened to that song like it was my job doing physical therapy for a foot fracture, and I had a clutch at the time. Nothing could stop me
Two other popular Industrial bands off the main stream are Ministry and KMFDM.
The video is ALL ABOUT THE ART GUYS!
My Favorite NIN Song is The Collector off this Album. You 2 just keep impressing me with your song choices. And, as far as Ministry goes; I am a Stigmata girl.
Love NiN. They were my first favorite band back in high school. You should check out the band Device. It's a band created by lead singer of Disturbed, and NiN was the influence for this side band. They only have one album, but great songs on it. Check out Vilify, Penance, You Think You Know, and they even did their cover of NiN's Wish song.
Yes!! Love NIN… do you guys know about his connection to Tori Amos? They were good friends back in the day, they used to cover and reference each other all the time. “Nine inch nails” and “pretty hate machine” are Tori lyrics for example💕🤘🏼😎
… I was having a brutal day yesterday and needed to escape my world, I binged your Pantera Metallica and Ozzy videos all day, soothed my soul made me laugh and thank you guys! Couple things I remember I wanted to tell ya… for more Metallica you have to add ‘Fight fire with Fire’, ‘whiplash’, and ‘spit out the bone’ with the video to your list of songs to do, and fyi regarding the Beatles Helter Skelter it’s been covered a lot, some I think you might like are Mötley Crüe, U2, and the queen of rock Pat Benatar. Hers was the first I heard when I was a little girl, and then when I heard Mötley Crüe do it I thought they were covering her, and then I found out that they were all just covering the Beatles like so many others lol! That’s it have a great day guys ✌ 🌻
Nine Inch Nails, Front 242, Sisters of Mercy - Sunday night Industrial club jams in the 80’s. 😁❤️
Hey guys, OG Tribe member here, please check out the band Battling Delirium and the song Tantric, this is a unique band and when you hear them you'll understand, when you hear them let me know who you think the singer sounds like. They have songs that sound similar to like 3 bands that you guys love. They are IMO a band that could be the next big thing.
For halloween, you should/_need to listen to industrial legends ”Skinny Puppy- the Killing Game”….it deserves a spot in that week, trust me.
Oh and Trent is an EGO (ie he has recieved 1 or more Emmy, Grammy and Oscar. The only thing he has left is a Tony to become an EGOT)…
im a bit late but your pretty spot on about the marilyn manson part. trent was basically the person who discovered manson and signed him on when no one else would. manson and trent worked together for several years i believe as trent was directly involved in the making of manson's "portrait of an american family" and later "antichrist superstar"
i believe manson also helped with trent's "broken" ep as you can see him in the music video for gave up. im unsure if manson helped at all during "the downward spiral". the two were friends for awhile but sadly had a huge falling out which you can read about in manson's autobiography "the long hard road out of hell"
i think im remembering all the details correctly but i am speaking from memory. if you want to learn more though its a very interesting subject to google
I’ve always really liked this one, super-unique with him kind of speaking some stream-of-consciousness monologue, then the one dark tone followed by a wash of hard noise. But I had never seen this video before, and yeah, it is super freaking trippy.
Gotta love when people are asked to name more industrial and Ministry, Coil, Skinny Puppy or MLWTThrillKillKult don't even show up...
I love how smokey knows so much about NIN. Respect.
Skinny Puppy! first and greatest Industrial band. 🤘
Nine inch nails - heresy
I'm tellin' y'all, Trent Reznor is the master of the abstract.
I like the idea that he's talking about god. Then the video would also make sense since the Newton's cradle is symbolic for science (action and reaction and conservation of energy) as the counter model for religion. And the apples are the apples of understanding (since it was also Newton who sat under a tree when the apple hit his head giving him the understanding of gravity).
THIS is THE song that got me into NIN! Yes❤
When you think how old this band is creating music that sticks up still. Pretty cool
I remember when this video came out, it felt like "safe industrial", like he was making a music video for apple
Ever consider the possibility that it refers to personal growth and realizing that we often create a false image of ourselves for others, or to try to fit in to the world around us, and trying to live up to that image only ends up hurting ourselves because it's not our true selves, or who we truly are, so we have to discard it and walk away from it by choosing to be our most authentic selves and who we truly are.
NIN popularized industrial in the nineties. Industrial was around far longer before... Ministry, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Throbbing Gristle.
Dudes this is my 2nd favorite NIN song, but the LIVE version is much better. In fact since watching the 2013 Tension tour live at Staple Center on RUclips, I ONLY listen to these songs live. "Copy of A" live is my favorite NIN song and I'd never even heard the studio version (not as good). The whole show is fucking incredible.
Fun fact, that's dave grohl on the drums. He played on the whole Album the drums If I remember correctly.
Great video and song....
Y'all guys need some Skinny Puppy and Ministry reactions.
My first time hearing this NIN tune also and it was great!
great band!
Guys, It's about time to dedicate a day only for Nine Inch Nails.
Smokey is very good at figuring out lyrics
And yes, Trent is the one who found manson and put him on and recorded his first 3 albums to my knowledge.
Industrial, alternative, modern rock, etc.
bands of the 90s,
( My thoughts, picks )
Other than or like NiN, Marilyn Manson:
Fear Factory, Ministry,
Type O Negative / (* Josh Silver's produced ' Pist-on ' )
...
🤔💭🤷🏻⁉️
- the profile photo is the REAL Me,
(* I usually use ' Mick Thomson ' from Slipknot as My profile photo)
✌🏻😸✌🏻
Skinny Puppy(pre NIN Canadian synth techno), KMFDM, Atari Teenage Riot are some similar bands to compare NIN to.. and the Spawn Soundtrack(all collabs)
Anybody want to add to the list?
Industrial is more like "metal" but with crushing electronic music, I personally don't consider mason industrial, or even really rammstien, they have a different vibe IMO. Skinny Puppy, Ministry, KMFDM, Stabbing Westward, Fear Factory, Author & Punisher, Swans, Throbbing Gristle, 3Teeth, those are industrial.
For more NIN, I'd say We're in This Together is probably my favorite track.
Y'all want some great industrial music, check out some skinny puppy. Tin omen, assimilate, smothered hope, candle. All of those are excellent
2:55 - Industrial existed LONG before Trent Reznor. You would have to go back to Throbbing Gristle, then Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Front 242, etc. What Trent does is often argued is not Industrial, at all, as it is much more pop-oriented, while true Industrial goes against everything corporate and mainstream. All of that stuff aside, there is no argument that Trent incorporates Industrial elements into his work, as he sites Skinny Puppy as one of his influences. Where ever a person stands on that whole "is it Industrial or isn't it" argument... this song is a banger, for sure.
Trent definitely was The Godfather of Industrial. Manson was considered industrial, but I consider him more Goth. I guess goth and industrial kind of cross over together though.
If u ever get the chance to see NIN live, GO! Trent is a genius musician but an even better showman. Their shows are ridiculous!
The Nails are my favorite band.
Amazing video directed by the amazing David Fincher
Trent and Fincher have collaborated to create so many masterpieces.
@@bicranium7198 True
This album is absolutely amazing and addicting. My favorite from it would be Sunspots. His entire catalog is a must listen.
This is one of the rare songs where youre going to be like "damn i need to watch the music video"
Love you guys from Montréal 😂
Love you guys and respect how you've been willing to learn about the different genres of rock, but not everything has to be nailed down and shoved in a specific genre. Sometimes a song doesn't exactly fit any genre at all. My only advice would just be to enjoy the music more and not worry so much about what box it fits into.
Come on guys, get to some Anthrax!!!! Their song "Only" is bad ass too.
