I initially balked at the idea of ignoring points but actually I really like it. Get some models and throw some dice is a refreshing way to kick off a new game.
Yeah I think it feels a bit odd to begin with but removing the barrier of points and having to reach some cap etc means that you can just get playing nice and quickly :) We're planning to move onto some 400 point games next now my pals have learned the mechanics :)
@@BecauseOfDragons just one thing that confuses me. What are the starting troops for the Elven factions? When going on the GW page this is what is offered for each of the three factions: Lothlorien: Galadhrim Warriors or Wood Elf Warriors of Lothlorien Rivendell: Warriors of the Last Alliance or Wood Elf Warriors of Lothlorien Mirkwood: Mirkwood Armoured Elves Warband, Palace Guards or Mirkwood Rangers
Lothlorien = you can choose between the two so whichever set you prefer. I'd go Wood Elf Warriors myself Rivendell = Warriors of the Last Alliance Mirkwood = Mirkwood Rangers would be my choice This way you're working with the decently priced plastic kits.
@@BecauseOfDragons Thank you for the quick response. So Rivendell is the one faction not coming with a pure elven base unit box, as spearman with shield are not included. Instead you get the 8 Númenor with sword and shield. I guess that is why GW is offering a resin box of 4 High Elf Warriors with spear and shield, right? Makes me wonder why they only offer seperate boxes of 3 Bowmen and 3 Spearmen for Númenor instead of 4 if a mix of 4,4,4 is what people go for. So the Mirkwood Rangers are the cheaper plastic option. I assume if money is not the deciding factor and resin is acceptable the Mirkwood Armoured Elves Warband might be a better option in order to learn the game as they come in a box of 12 with the three different weapon types. Right?
@@severintw the mix of 4/4/4 is only a suggestion based on the max size of 12 models in a unit. Three models in a blister is who GW traditionally sold their metal models back in the day, though it does conveniently work with 12 model warbands. And when you're learning, marking bases to proxy different weapons is perfectly acceptable. As long as its clear to both players which one is which, you're all good.
Not sure I need help getting started with the game but your stuff is always great to watch so it's nice listening to your ideas - keep up the good work dude! Damian
Perfect timing. I have some uruk hai half painted up and my mate is interested in playing. I was wondering where to to start, battle mat size, scenario, model count/points level. This video has taken the guess work out of it! Looking forward to the next one
I have the rule book and lots of models, but I have not been able to find the Armies of Middle Earth for a reasonable price. I like your approach in the meantime. If I don't have points, this sounds good.
Paying around with a few miniatures per side is a great way to learn how to play and see where it goes without needing to think about points too much :) Hopefully you have fun!
It has totally revived my hobby. I have been excited to dive into painting all sorts of miniatures and learning more about the game and where it is right now. Plus, the Middle-earth community is just so nice :)
@@BecauseOfDragons You hit the nail on the head there. I've gone to some tournaments recently and I've not had 1 bad game, everyone is so nice and just there because of the lotr love.
Great video and suggestions! Looking forward to setting up some games with these small practice armies. I just subbed looking forward to you 1000 subscriber video!
Have the first three boxed sets from back in the day. I understand the December Osgiliath will have new rule book. Any.idea if that replaces current rule book? What about Army books, will they be obsolete in December?
As far as GW has revealed, the Armies Of LotR and Armies Of The Hobbit will not be obsolete when it comes to the release of the new boxed set. Also - the new Rulebook is basically the same as the current rules BUT it includes all of the errata and FAQ updates since the last book game out. It will also be reformatted and rethemed to fit Osgiliath in terms of art, miniature displays etc. Think of it as a .5 of the latest edition. So - you don't NEED it but it would be good if you're planning to do matched play games at tournaments and the like.
I picked up the Two Towers box way, way, way back in the day but didn't go past getting a few models due to a lack of plastic options. I keep meaning to jump back in, but stock levels are lower than a Hobbit's belt right now. Also, I'd love to do the Scouring of the Shire, but the thought of buying Hobbits in blisters of three makes my wallet weep. I should probably bite the bullet and convert some from a cheaper plastic source.

Excellent. Was looking forward to such an introduction.
Hope it's helpful and gets folks started

Nice video, really informative. But a number of the pictures on the screen are really small. Maybe show them all in a big format next video.
Thanks for watching - yeah, I'm working on making sure images I show come out a bit bigger. Hopefully I'll get that solved!

The Wargames Atlantic Halflings might be a good option - and then use Frostgrave humans to represent the Ruffians perhaps?
@@BecauseOfDragons that's what I was thinking, even if the WA halflings are a little more armoured than the Shirefolk.
What program or pdf are you using to scroll through your gallery? I’d like to be able to print those.
Just using Google Photo to scroll through :)
Hmm I find the rings of power pretty hideous, but I am happy it rekindled some love for the game.
I think it's done a good job of getting people interested in learning more about Tolkien and Middle-earth which can only be a good thing :)
Is there a Wahapedia sort of thing for ME SBG?
Not really although there are ways to find the rules if you look hard enough is what I'll say
I just compared the lb to the dollar cost for the fellowship of the ring set. I'd be paying 150% more because I'm in the US..wtf!
