Things I learned watching this:
Scheller is a movie expert.
LOTR is a very good movie.
LOTR is a very long movie.
The end. (:

One does not simply make jokes while Boromir is dying and Aragorn is comforting him
Or forget how Bilbo got the ring from Gollum if you claim you've read the Hobbit, like she admitted in the post-reaction.
@@eschiedler “What is in my pocket” is NOT a proper riddle, and Sméagol never should’ve let Bilbo get away with it. This is a hill upon which I will always stand, willing to die if need be
She should be punished..... I will say though, memes have made it very difficult for someone who hasn't seen the movies to take them as seriously as they should...
Anyone else wonder if this is what it’s like when Leonard FINALLY convinced Penny to watch LOTR 🤔 other than that - this is like every movie I’ve seen with a “girl” from chatty to more emotional reactions… to checking her cell as if totally checked-out… which is why I usually watch a movie MYSELF (90%) ever since High School! @@randomusername89 agreed. that ain't a riddle, it's just a question.
The relationship between Sam and Frodo was based on the friendship's Tolkien had experienced and seen during the First World War between soldiers serving with one another - a unbelievably close camaraderie and willingness to die for one another, a love closer than siblings but also not sexual. And for anyone who thought Tolkien intended to hint otherwise I'd point to the fact that Sam's interest in Rosie Cotton is established from the outset and maintained to the end of the books.
Exactly, not sexual at all.
I don't know about that. Asking your best friend who is Male if he remembers the taste of Strawberries seems pretty gay. Lol

It's shocking to me how people haven't seen the greatest trilogy ever made with some of the best world building in cinema/books.
I know! At least she is watching it now.
It’s high fantasy, I can see why many would skip it, however I also 100% agree that this is probably one of the best film trilogies ever made, and definitely one of the very best adaptations ever!
Agreed!!
I haven’t seen it until now
I didn't get into fantasy until last year, but even I saw each movie in theaters. Probably because of the hype and Elijah Wood is one of my favorite actors. Plus, Orlando Bloom 😍🤣

Also Brett - laughing while Boromir dies
It’s fucking rude my generation is so immature
Whaaaaaaaaaat? Should I even watch this? Laughing during Boromir's death scene is NOT kosher!!!
@@windsongshf LOL. She makes light of it for sure. I threw this series with Brett on in the background while working. Not anything super entertaining. But it’s worthy of a time waster
I'd laugh if Billy Ray Cyrus died, so . . .

Fun fact: the most common response to the end of this movie, after three hours and forty-eight minutes, is “Wait, it’s over already?”
Meanwhile with Return of the King. "Well it's over." "Wait no there is more."
Yeah that was pretty much my reaction
I'm sad they didn't watch all three back to back. We watched the first two extended cuts, then drove to downtown Seattle to watch the Return of the King at midnight in 2003. Such a wonderful memory!
When I took my girlfriend at the time to see Fellowship in the theatre, she had zero idea what it was. And when it ended she got mad at me because she didn't realize it was just 1/3 and wanted more.
This whole thread I feel kindred spirits...my dad and I stayed up and made lembas bread watched the first 2 then went to the theatre for the midnight premiere. Good times. I still have a cloak that my mom had made for me because I loved the ones in the movie.
One does not simply cut out Gandalf's You Shall Not Pass, iconic line ever.
No you don't. I bet they think their cool but
You can kinda tell a fan edit because skipping you shall not pass which is so popular but fly you foul is way more popular in the community.

Fun fact Brett: Christopher Lee was the only cast member on the all three movies to meet Tolkien. He read the LOTR every year and helped Jackson with certain aspects of the movie.
He was a legend himself
Chris was awesome. Apparently he was hoping to get the role of Gandalf, but humbley accepted saurumon when Ian McKellen was selected for the part.
I loved him as Dooku also
Christopher Lee was also a spy during World War II. I won't spoil it for you, but some of his first-hand knowledge acquired during the war was used in the films.
@@UnclePengy ha it's not a spoiler. Lee told Jackson that in his experience, when someone gets stabbed in the back they don't start screaming like Jackson originally had written, they quietly sort of gasp for air and die.
All 3 LOTR movies were made at the same time. In one production. That's why the trilogy flows so well.

Looks like the peer pressure to watch the lord of the rings from every single person on the internet ever finally got to her
usually how it is
And LOTR couldnt keep her off her phone???
Now the Matrix is next.
A good thing to pressure her into. Since Tolkien is such an open Christian (catholic).
Mission accomplished gentlemen. Drinks on me 🍻
The Lord of the Rings is the most important western trilogy of books ever. It's message transcends generations. It is highly spiritual and an amalgamation of western culture.
Also it's not a trilogy.
It was all downhill from there
Factual. I grew up with these movies (still am growing up) and they have influenced me so much as a person
D. Ryan Webb Correct. Tolkien intended for The Lord of the Rings to be published as one book, although it is actually divided into six parts called books, so it could be considered a hexalogy. Or because it was intended to be one volume of a two volume collection with The Silmarillion, it could be considered half of a duology.
I liked the Rings of Power better

The way the fellowship theme builds until they are all together, then it slowly breaks apart until they fully break up is musical masterpiece.
Howard Shore certainly created a masterpiece for this film series. I sometimes wonder if LOTR would be as good without his soundtrack.
Me watching this video for the first time, waiting for Brett to have the right reactions to this timeless masterpiece: 🤡
While watching this you can fully get a sense of how much Brett does not care about movies. 30% does not react, 20% on her phone, 50% watching while looking completely uninvested
And calling Boromir a "simp".
More like 50% on her phone.
She is too immature to understand true conservatism. Its become aparent that her producers have fed her every good opinion she has ever had.

Scheller is a Certified Nerd/Geek.
it made me really annoyed that he does not like Orlando Bloom as Legolas, or disregard the change of tones Merry and Pippin had from novel to film, and a few other things which seems off for a fan of Lord of the Rings.
Making gay jokes and laughing as Boromir dies is one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen. 🤦♂
Have to agree. Having to mock real male friendships..and how powerful they are and have nothing to do with sexual attraction...is contemptuous.
That’s two things.
@@jwolters4453
I absolutely agree.
The other thing is that if two close female characters in an adventure were called lesbian, a male Presenter who said that would be pilloried.
Brett does okay, but the internalized misandry of our society is strong. 🤷♂️
She was being sarcastic. It was a continuation of their previous commentary of how the Left is always trying to make things - like same-sex friendships - LGBTQ twisted.
Im kind of disappointed she neither cried at Boromir's death nor at Sam saying "Course you are. And I'm coming with you." They both get me every time.
Lol they r gay!!!
It's sacrilege 👺
No matter how many times I have seen this movie I will always cry at that part and when Gandalf fell.
Its never bothered me that Boromir dies. Book nor movie. I'm only glad he redeemed himself to his King at the end.
i cried even watching it now
Came to see Brett react to the movie, stayed for Scheller absolutely geeking out on the whole thing.
An interesting tidbit from the movies is when the characters are travelling to Mordor the characters generally travel from left to right on the screen, when the characters are travelling back home they generally travel from right to left on the screen. A subtle gesture that helps to add to the immersiveness of the movies.
The one thing you miss is that this first film came out the December after 9-11. Gandalf's words about the times and the need to rise to the occasion had a lot of meaning at the time.
You are 100 % correct. When Frodo said "I wish this hadn't in my time." It hit my heart as I was thinking about 9/11 and how I wish that happened happens in our time.
I held on the Gandalf response. It comforted me

Gimli is far from a simp. lol OK, so, when Galadriel gave Gimli 3 hairs it was VERY significant. It demonstrated that she recognized his purity of heart. She's immortal, right... So, Feanor, one of the greatest of Elves, asked for a single strand of her hair three times yet she refused each time because she could see his egotistical nature. But, she gave Gimli three hairs. So cool.
I wonder if this is Tolkien referencing Njal's saga?
Also, Fëanor probably wanted to create something using her hair.
Hey, do you listen to the Prancing Pony Podcast? Or maybe The Tolkien Professor, Corey Olsen? If not, you should definitely come and join the Tolkien community.
In the appendix of the Return of the King, Gimle encased those three hairs in transparent crystal as an heirloom of his house.
I'd never made that connection. Very cool.
It also shows the fact that even with the old feud between the elves and the dwarves, when the son of one of the members of Thorin Oakenshield's company asked the a royal elf of Noldor for a strand of her her and gave him three, while in the past, Feanor, the king of Noldor, was refused of one strand each of the three times he asked.

It looked like she mostly watched the screen, but had times when she looked at her phone. Who knows, maybe it was work e-mails. Idk. I'm someone who has to fully focus on a movie if I've never seen it before, and it annoys me when someone isn't paying complete attention to a movie I want them to see; but I feel like she pretty much paid attention. It’s mind blowing how well these films have held up 20 years later. Absolute classics.
These movies are damn near perfect. Cast, acting, writing, directing, visual effects, editing...everything.
It's funny that you guys brought it up, but I think the whole trying to make "Sam and Frodo a couple" really detracts from a key theme of the story: the powerful love that exists between friends/brothers/fellowship. Sam and Frodo's friendship is one of my favorite things about the story/movie and defending the fact they are friends (and not a couple!) is 100% a hill I will die on.
👏👏👏
The fact that Sam goes on to sire 14 kids kinda lends some credence to your interpretation.
I mean, Tolkien was a WWI veteran and a devout English Catholic. Frodo and Sam reflect the strong bonds between an officer in the English army and his batman not a gay couple. Wherever you stand on the LGBT+ issue, a gay interpretation of Frodo and Sam is laughable.
It's literally the most immature take on the whole thing. When they were making gay jokes near the end I was pretty annoyed.
Them: "they said you cant have male friendships anymore"
30 seconds later: "that was gay" "thats gay"
I relate so much with Brett's friend. That is literally me, knowing by heart each theme playing and being visibly excited the whole time about the most unsignificant things :')

I'm not sure she realizes that the effects were AMAZING for the time and still are considered very good. This was groundbreaking stuff and looks way better than newer films. I'm also not sure she understands the amount of work and heart and zeal that went into these movies. They just don't make films like this anymore. There isn't the same level of skill and pride in making cinematic art!
She doesn’t care, she’s an NPC
The effects are still some of the best ever on screen to this day.
Literally though. Before LoTR and them winning so many Academy’s, Hollywood looked down on the genre as most fantasy/adventure films were seen as comical and childish and never thought that such a category would ever be seen in the red carpet…and then LOTR was out. There’s good reason why so many people back then said those 3 movies were a HUGE gamble at the time. So much effort and time for a fantasy series that everyone has looking down on at first. The score and production alone was enough to win awards…
Isn't she an actress though? I would have thought she'd have even more appreciation for them. It's sad 😔
Love Scheller's commentary about the musical themes and motifs. Good man; Howard Shore deserves all the recognition, because the music is basically another character in this trilogy. That's exactly what I'd be doing if I were introducing these films to someone too haha.

Brett is an annoying normie

Just hearing the prologue gives me chills. These are my favorite movies.
I actually had the pleasure of meeting Sean Astin (Sam)! He was the nicest guy ever. We met him at a convention towards the end of the day when there were no other people in line to meet him so we got to talk to him for a good 15 minutes and got maps of middle earth signed by him. My cousin actually wrote and directed a kids play of The Hobbit and got it approved by Tolkien Enterprises to put it on so we got him the map from the hobbit and had Sean sign it for my cousin's bachelor party gift. Great memories.
I also had the opportunity to meet him a few years back after he did an improv show, and he really is super nice and friendly! We could tell he was tired, as it was late at night and he had done 2 or 3 shows that day, but he still took the time to meet with us and take pictures. And during one of the improv scenes where he took suggestions from the crowd, he very happily said his infamous line "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" It made us all so happy to see him say that in person. It was an unforgettable night.
I love it when Merry and Pippin run out and join the fellowship, then after Elrod announces the party's official name, Pippin says "Great... where are we going?" He was so clueless. 😂😂
I like how Brett was actually looking at her phone for half the time but the nerd on the right watched it through the entire thing
I was 16 when this movie came out. I'll never forget the zeitgeist of going to see these movies every Christmas in a packed theater. I feel like we will never get that kind of excitement from a new movie again.
I watched them when I was 17-18 as well, best trilogy ever. I did however get that same rush when Mad Max Fury Road dropped, and Infinity War was just amazing. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 may be the same for me, I’m so heavily invested in those characters.
@@puppy14 fury road was an epic movie experience, may be best ever for me.

I went to the midnight premier of the first Hobbit movie. 2 of my friends acted out the bridge of Khazad Dûm scene impromptu up front before the movie started. Crowd was lit.
Then the movie played and that sweet, exciting era ended.
I was like 9 when this came out. Wow, and I'm pretty sure my parents took me brother and I to see every single one of them when they came out

Laughing/talking during boromir’s death is proof you’re a sociopath
Not to mention forgetting who was playing the character. She called him the "Miley Cyrus" guy in her TT's apology, yet she never looked up Sean Bean before addressing the feedback. I can disagree with Sean Bean's views (including Orlando Bloom's), but I can respect him/them as a great actor.
I remember when my dad first showed me and my brothers the Lord of the rings movies (extended editions, of course). He never actually said this, but it definitely had the feeling of "boys, this is the most important thing I will ever show you". And it was. Best trilogy ever
As I've gotten older and suffered greater losses and celebrated higher achievements, my appreciation for the concepts that these movies explore has gotten deeper and deeper. The depth of friendship and the value of companionship between Frodo and Sam, the sacrifice and loss of what the others considered a person of immense power and wisdom in Gandalf, and the acceptance of of Boromir's flaws in himself as a reflection of his esteem for Aragorn, and all the other small but so important moments shared among these characters are priceless examples of how great we could be if we only had the courage to try. It feels like Brett and Scheller paid more attention to how current events relate to these films, rather than how these films relate to individuals committed to a common goal. Not saying any of it wrong, but in my opinion, it is deeper than that.
You have to consider that Brett and Scheller are still children. They obviously have little to no experience or context for the grueling effort, the incredible danger, the potential for being horribly murdered by real monsters and the trust and comradery that can develop under those circumstances in what is essentially a military, small unit infiltration operation. I am sorely annoyed at the little girl who laughed at Boromir's death. But like I implied and said, immature children with no context as to what they are watching.
I think the two of us hold similar opinions on the movies and concepts, but I don't think that Brett and Scheller could be classified as children. I think a more accurate way to say it is that they haven't truly considered what it would be like to commit yourself to a set of principles so deeply that living by them is the only way you *can* live. I'm sure there is someone in their lives they could spend time with in order to have a living embodiment of what we're talking about as an example. Brett is young and full of passion, but it seems that she hasn't been tempered by suffering yet. Scheller on the other hand openly admitted that he might shed a tear during ROTK, but not so much here. He knows what happens, so he's kind of glossing over what the characters are experiencing in their own real time like it's less meaningful because it works out in the resolution of the 3rd movie. His stoicism dampens his compassion.
Watching some of their reactions had me realizing that though I feel pretty young, I was raised in a completely different world.
Strange to consider that the time between noticeable change keeps getting shorter and shorter. I'd guess it's related to how the pace of our development has been getting faster and faster. There's probably a better way to say that.
This comment and subsequent discussion is very well articulated and I appreciate it greatly.
Absolute favorite characters are Sam and Aragorn. According to the hobbit history, Hobbits are affectionate beings. And it's sad that brotherhood is no longer a thing and everything is gay, their brotherhood throughout this story is powerful and beautiful.
Bring back brotherhood! And bring back community! The Hobbits celebrations and communal socializing are amazing. Be willing to hug your friends and keep them from the brink of self-destruction and be willing to be the person to bring your community together through meals and celebration! Ignore pride month and instead be humble together!

Also, also, thank Sheller for doing this as I would have stabbed both of you for talking over parts of the movie. The second time he said "This is the [___] theme," I would have slapped him. You two are definitely a good movie-watching fit.
Can be forgiven if he had paused the movie, but talking over the theme is a capital offense.

He did not disappoint.
Genuinely
Bad idea. Extended Editions are better for a second watch-through.
Fool of a Took!
Fun fact, apart from the line “and my bow”, Legolas and Frodo never exchanged words before or again after. It’s almost as if they had some underlining beef with each other that’s never spoken about lol. But yeah, that is the only time they have any sort of exchange.
I think Tolkien did it without intending to
And even more fascinating thing is - they exchanged only these words, but their friendship is the best in LOTR.
Legolas often mocks and gossips about other characters in elvish not realizing that Frodo is fluent in High Elvish. So, it's one of those awkward relationships where Frodo likes Legolas but is letting him slowly put his foot in his mouth.
What makes it funny is that Legolas is a Wood Elf, so his elvish compared to Frodo's is like a redneck talking to the queen of England.

Brett's reaction to Galadriel makes sense. The elves are supposed to be otherworldly and unsettling, they are immortal and no one else is. That is a startling nonverbal that is done so well with the portrayal of her character.
Well said! I was wondering if I should mention that she's also literally radiant at times, like unto the light of the stars that elves awoke to look upon before there was a moon or sun.
