1993 will forever be one of my favorite seasons. The technology everyone was pushing out was fascinating, automatic gearboxes, ABS, CVT transmission, active suspension, DRS but cooler, even 4 wheel steering 1993 stands out because it was a one season wonder, 16 races of "Why not test this"
After testing the new McLaren Ford, Pre season, Senna decided to race in the McLaren because it had a very nimble chasis which really showed it in that epic race at Donnington Park. If only the engine had more top end power, Senna would have challenged for the 1993 title. All in all it was still a great season for him.
Actually, one of the main reasons they had that nimble chassis was because they ran a V8 instead of a bulky V12! One of the reasons a well funded team like Benetton chose V8's for so many seasons was the trade off: they lacked some of the top end power of the V10/12's, but the fact that they left room to make the car more efficient in terms of aero and weight distribution made up for that. So i'm not sure the season would have been better had they chosen the Lamborghini V12 which was in the picture for 1993! It was heavy, used more fuel and extreme amounts of oil, and though it was more powerfull, it was not enough to make up it! As you said, it was a great season for Senna and I think it was the best he AND McLaren could do at that time.

Prost had a disastrous race, jumping the start and then stalling his car twice after serving his stop-go penalty. It was the failure of a 10 cent rubber o-ring on Michael's Benetton that handed an easy win to Senna. Michael served notice once again that he was a force to be reckoned with!
+Mr18000rpm He was leading Senna by 18 sec after 30 laps. Amazing. It was only his 2nd Monaco GP. Michael showed his extra talent. This is the track where driving skills matter the most. The car has less importance contrary to some other circuits.

@MrLewisbate It is a well know fact that in that season the Williams Renault could provide around 780 hp while the Benneton's Cosworth V8 could reach steady 700 hp AND the McLaren Cosworth V8 something that went from 640 to 680 hp. Benneton had a deal with Ford and McLaren had to make a do with an older specification unit. They just leveled the specs from silverstone onwards. Even so Senna managed to be the vice-champion with Schumacher being fourth behind Hill.

I think this was the first year of paddle shifters. BRING BACK THE MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS! This was a skill that was beautiful to watch. I've seen drivers lose a race on the final lap because of a missed shift.
Ferrari had paddle shifters first in 1989. Williams has paddle shifters in 1991, maybe even 1990 too. McLaren started 1992 with manual shifters then changed to paddle shifters later on in the season.
It's interesting to see just how ahead of its time Michael's Benetton was, particularly with regard to the front-end design of the car. We don't see any other constructors at this time with that soon-to-be-standard bullet-shaped front-end design with the open space beneath the nose which was soon to be adopted by all constructors throughout Formula One. If Senna couldn't have gone to Williams in '92 or '93 like he wanted, it's only too bad he didn't go to Benetton in 1994 instead of Williams.
Incredibly Prost finished 4th in this race. Had he not stalled twice while serving his 10 second penalty for jumping the lights, it probably would have been a great finish, catching Senna & trying to pass him.

The McLaren MP4/8 a "poorly designed car"? Is this a joke? There were supposed to get V12 Lamborghini, but the deal was dropped during the winter, and by then it was too late for Senna to go to another top team. He signed a race-by-race contract with McLaren, as he wasn't sure he wanted to continue racing at all. A few wins at the start of the season convinced him to stay though.
You're welcome. That's probably why they got an older version of the Ford engine for the first half of the season and not the one Benetton had. The Lambo engine was supposedly heavy, but very powerful, and Senna was happy with its performance during testing, but I can't remember why the deal didn't go through.

PROST NUMBER ONE
Number one forever - Senna Brazil
Prost should have won Monaco in 1993. He was punished very severely because he was destroying the championship.

Never understood Senna staying with Maclaren when they went with Ford power. Or lack of power.
I thank you very much for explaining that fact. For years that puzzled me. That sudden change must have made the engineers suicidal.
You're welcome. That's probably why they got an older version of the Ford engine for the first half of the season and not the one Benetton had. The Lambo engine was supposedly heavy, but very powerful, and Senna was happy with its performance during testing, but I can't remember why the deal didn't go through.
Lambo engines were powerful large V12s. But if we think about other seasons, they weren’t reliable.
What happens at 3:58 ?
Prost jumped the start, so he came to box for drive through penalty, and apparently the engine stalled.
@@zardinho To be honest, Prost was stolen. They wanted to make the championship more interesting. Prost was dominating it from head to shoulders.
What happens to prost!?? went to box due some penalty but stalled the car twice?? and why they take so long to crank again??
+Rafasabee it can ruin the engines, i think they have to let all the fuel and oil run out before restarting it or something weird like that. f1 engines are weird.
+Rafasabee
The problem may well have been due to the electronics, not the easiest car to start, still he came from 22nd up to 4th, no mean feat at Monaco
I thought there was a Japanese ghost on my left.

14 F1 titles! Hamilton never had these pilots against him....
Senna Winner!
How would Hamilton fair amongst these 3
Tu é o fan boy do Shumi.
Porém, o inglês reduziu demais a velocidade e,
Irregular suspension Willians Team....no rules!!!!!
Prost jumped the start and never got a penalty
Ayrton Senna is unbeatable unbelievable unbearable in F1 history. Lots of people's born and die. Boldwin the isrel world best leprosy human rights believe king , Adolf Hitler, le quan u, this all brought up by our gods. We can't equal with this people's others.
McLaren sounds great, Williams aswell. Benetton sounds like I would eat sand... awful

Prost should have won Monaco in 1993. He was punished very severely because he was destroying the championship.
Back when Monaco required real skill before they removed most of the tricky barriers and allowed drivers to make mistake without cost.
Prost was faster.

Wow senna sucked
