The sound of Honda engine to the hands of Ayrton Senna is unrepeateable. Unforgetable. Unique. Interlagos is the of Senna and every GP of Interlagos was a personal case for him.
When Senna jumped in for the Lotus Honda back in 1987 he was surprised of the vibrations, tellin Satoru Nakajima something wrong with the car. Satoru who was a test driver for Honda said it's normal. It was V6. This here is V12...
That was also mainly due to how the cars were built, the McLaren still had a clamshell body over its chassis, to which the camera is fixed. This flexes much more than the Williams which had what is now common practise, just a chassis part of the aerodynamic shape of the car.
True. Especially for 1993. For me Ayrton's finest ever season. But let's not forget that he ALSO won many races in a McLaren that was SO much better than any other car, it was almost embarrassing.
Especially when the Williams-Renault ran V10s and McLaren-Honda had the V12. If you watch videos of Senna from 1989 and 1990, he also had a V10 those years and the best way I can describe the difference is the V10s are much higher pitched. They also revved slightly higher and had completely different handling characteristics from the V12, particularly in the gearbox. The V12 of the McLaren and Ferraris sound like angry beasts which will kill you if you're not careful, lol. As for the latter, my favorite year for Ferrari V12s was the 412T2 from 1995.
When Senna got Honda engine back in 1987 he was surprised how much vibrations it makes. However Satoru Nakajima his new teammate then confirmed it's the way Honda engines work. Anyway, I'm really surprised how well could he drive this V12 engine so quick with these vibrations.
@@sullybiker6520 the reason Ferrari switched from a V12 to a V10 at the end of 95 is because of the dimensions and the amount of fuel needed. Renault did everything right choosing a V10 and developing it year by year. alfter all, also in term of top power, a V12 is not in advantage because it has to recover more internal friction. the pistons are smaller so they can move faster but it isn't that simple. Honda did a huge work at the end of 91 to bring their engine at Renaults level and in they case of qualifying even ahead (with the help of Shell as in 91 qualifying fuel was still allowed).
Seeing the smooth driving of the williams and practically no jumps in the car due to the active suspension and no skidding in the retakes due to the traction control, we can have an idea of how much better the Senna was than these guys seeing the onboard camera ma Mclaren that looks more like a ping pong ball than a camera faithfully representing the deficiency of the suspension and also the constant corrections of the Senna on the exits of the curves.

the car might be inferior, but the sound is the best and will be forever
McLaren looked like an earthquake the wavy runway. Willians looked like a comfortable passenger car.

Active suspension does that.

I think that McLaren has a stiffer pasive suspension

They sound similar, yes, but if you put 2 side by side, you can see nothing is equal besides the tires.
Fantastic. I wish F1 would be like that now.

@Greek MasterGR I still keep up with f1 but I don't watch the races since it went green across the board, I will check more into 2012 thanks 😎🏎️🏁

I just wanna say, the Williams onboard sounds f*cking incredible
Renault and Honda Engine´s was pretty similar in performance, but the chassis difference between both cars was so big.
The Honda was heavier, and needed more fuel and cooling; this problem was one of the reasons the V12 fell out of favour. But I do miss the sound.
