Schumacher was right behind Patrese in his very first Monaco GP. In his 2nd one (1993) MS was faster than Senna and got very close to Prost's Williams-Renault running one fastest lap after another. Furthermore in 1996 he got the 1st Pole for Ferrari in Monaco after 17 years. With three wins he is the most successful Ferrari driver in Monte-Carlo. Monaco is the track where driving skills matter the most.
And Monaco is also where he got the fantastic pole in his last season in 2012. The 2012 Mercedes was not a race winning or pole setting car, but he managed to get pole in the track where driver skill matters the most, beating drivers half his age. Too bad his car had technical issues meaning he couldn't actually start from P1, otherwise he likely would have won the race - a fitting tribute and finale to one of the most amazing careers in sports.
Uzair Hashmi Yes, and do you know what is amazing yet ? In 2012 MS was able to beat his team mate, Rosberg, 10 times in qualifyings (including Monaco too). So, their battle ended a "draw" that year. Nico was also 10 times faster out of 20 common qualis. What is remarkable that MS was 43 in 2012, meanwhile Nico was much younger, he was in the best age. Schumacher's car didn't have technical issues, but he was given a five-place penalty on the starting grid for the Monaco Grand Prix for crashing into Bruno Senna in the previous race, at Barcelona. It was a mistake that unfortunately cost him the Monaco Pole. Too bad that by the punishment, this Monaco fastest lap isn't marked in his Pole statistics.

The truth is he was the best driver on the grid from 1991-2006. Even in mediocre ferrari years (1997-1998) he was able to fight for the title against superior Mclaren and Williams, so calm down mate.
Raw horsepower, pure skill and no distractions in 100 buttons in front if you, just hands on the wheel holding on for dear life going as hard and as fast as you can true drivers.
one thing that still makes me impressed about these drivers back then is that they were able to have enough strength to hold onto the steering with one hand while the other is just shifting at the same time.

Great insight into what it's like to drive a racing car. When they touched they were both amazing to not stall and keep control. After that, a few corners later, Schumacher got brake tested lol.
@@dkdanis1340 New cars are like cruise ships, they are longer and lose balance more easily when they touch, they are bigger which means less space in the track for maneuvers, they sound like kitties and as far as speed goes yes they are faster but u don't go to see F1 just for the speed. U go to see the battles. And all that I mentioned above created a sport where battles are rare and short. The drivers are so easily driving these things they have time to talk and joke around on the radio. I hate the new cars. F1 needs to go back

With the halo in place these days, they should use that to mount a camera. That way we don't have to see them, and it'll give a better view of what the driver sees.
It's always fun see a guy in racing car using a "manual" shift up against guy early 90's who had the semi-automatic. Reminds me of Colin Mcrae in his WRX in mid 90's he had the goold old manual transmission up against the Lancers who had the new semi auto-s.
the evos were the last to go to the wrc spec crap, they stuck out group a until the very end, and kept winning, with far tighter restrictions than the wrc spec imprezas (the first to use the more relaxed wrc spec rules), escort, focus, corrola, 206. the mitsubishi was basically a highly modified road car against purpose built rally cars by 1999. and tommi still showed them how it was done. Anyway the wrc is not related to this video so why are we even thinking about it?

@@MrYoumitube the Subaru was using a sequential gearbox when they abandoned the group a platform for the then new wrc spec regulations in 1997. They were the first to swap to the new regulations allowing it.
I really wished there was a camera UNDER the dash so I can see how he double clutches. And the little kids whining that he has no talent: several other cars were using semi-auto gearboxes and he kept up with them in a full manual gearbox. That's NOT easy to do when the technology was outpacing manual transmissions. Benetton eventually had to abandon it to keep up.

His former boss Eddie Jordan also mentioned in a magazine interview that although quiet and confusing to work with at the time, the Jordan team said he was a serious workaholic and put in long hours at the track. (This is why some mechanics worried a lot about how many engines he would break! The team had a small budget and sometimes struggled financially.) It's true: hard work and a "never say die" attitude do pay off. When the newspaper The European put out a story in late 1995 about Gerhard Berger crashing because he had difficulty adjusting to Schumacher's Benetton, Schuey then set fastest lap at the same track that day. I was in shock because I thought it would take a full week or two for him to show some serious speed or good lap times. I knew he was very good but I didn't know he could IMPROVE so damn quickly!

Cannot believe Patrese and Berger left the door open at the start, but perhaps that was as much down to the skills of Ayrton and Michael. Amazing to think that 20 years later Michael would set the fastest time around these streets in qualifying albeit not getting the pole. We still miss you Ayrton! ATB :-)
great footage! regarding all the talks around assists and shifting I'm not sure if Monaco really gives you an edge as long as you are not in first and can go full speed and I'm sure any F1 driver was able to handle the cars without ABS and TCS - it would just allow them to push a little harder - maybe the gearbox was the main advantage but Schumacher was one of the greatest drivers in history so he knows his stuff and stop arguing about it - it gets boring - you should come to realize that if somebody wins as many races and titles in a competition like the F1 it can't be for his mediocrity or are you saying nobody else tried hard enough to challenge him?

@@MBJanus None of Michaels Ferrari Team Mates ever got different technical treatment than him. Coulthard had to let Mika pass in Jerez 97, was asked to let him pass in Melbourne 98 and often later when the Championships went close. Funnily enough he also had quite some mechanical DNF's and screwed Pitstops in the early part of the seasons 98-2000. Senna had no other choice then to go challenge Prost in order to win something. When Prost left he carefully chose Berger because he knew that Berger was no threat - which is a sentiment Schumi shared as Ferrari offered Berger to continue in 96 as his Teammate. There might be some Truth to Jos Verstappens Claim in 94 though as Benetton was operating on a far smaller Budget than Williams, McLaren and Ferrari and therefore simply couldn't afford to equip 2 Cars with the same things. The Budgets rose massively with the start of the 90's and Benetton was a team like Sauber, Jordan or Stewart who suddenly had to deal with being involved in a Championship race.
This and ONLY this was the real deal. No traction control, no abs, no drs, no servo steering,no brake compensation front/rear or wing adjustments during driving. If you could drive this you could drive anything and not the other way arround. Schumi was not my favo driver but along side Senna one of the best to this day.
Actually they had traction control (until banned in 94) and something called active suspension which was extremely high tech, reading the road surface to move the suspension in anticipation of bumps and camber. These early 90s cars were extremely high tech. Don't be deceived.

The first follower was the 1993 McLaren MP4/8, Benetton had TC in their B193 from Monaco on (where Michael Schumacher retired while leading to the vibrations caused by the TC). After the 1993 season, it was banned, even though up to date rumours are going round whether or not the 1994 Benetton B194 had an illegal TC (the FIA impounded the car's engine control unit and found out that there was still the TC software on it).

Schumacher went from a team he won 2 titles in a row with, to a team that hadn't won in the sport for over 2 decades. He helped to build the foundations of that team over the next 3 years and then went on to dominate with that team for the next 5 years. He helped and was a crucial part in building their success. He also came out of retirement and helped developed Mercedes into what they are now before Hamilton took the seat He was in. Brawn himself said Schumacher had an immense and crucial part to play in developing the car and team into what it was to dominate the sport with Hamilton at the wheel. Schumacher has and always will be the greatest F1 driver the sport has seen, alot don't like him, but anyone with common knowledge of F1 won't dispute that. Hamilton is a great, that can't be disputed. But he is not the greatest of all time. Oh to answer about others with poor equipment, Schumacher also has the most wins in a non championship winning car even though he has less wins than Hamilton, further proof Hamilton is only great with the greatest car against the other greats records.
And after 20 years, he is still there making a pole position...only one word: INSANE!

I really wished there was a camera UNDER the dash so I can see how he double clutches. And the little kids whining that he has no talent: several other cars were using semi-auto gearboxes and he kept up with them in a full manual gearbox. That's NOT easy to do when the technology was outpacing manual transmissions. Benetton eventually had to abandon it to keep up.

***** He was amazing, unfortunately I heard too many British media opinions back in the day and refused to give him his due. I figured that they were right and he was an just unfair, cold hearted cheater, but after many years of watching several amazing drives, and seeing him jump out of his car after every win and celebrate I became a convert, not really a fan, I just had to admit that we were witnessing one of the greats.

Schumacher converted me when my dad visited the Ferrari track while on a business trip. He told me the man's work ethic was incredible. Looong after (then teammate) Eddie Irvine and some of the mechanics had gone home, Schuey was still struggling to squeeze that extra 1/100 of a second off the fastest lap times at Fiorano. His former boss Eddie Jordan also mentioned in a magazine interview that although quiet and confusing to work with at the time, the Jordan team said he was a serious workaholic and put in long hours at the track. (This is why some mechanics worried a lot about how many engines he would break! The team had a small budget and sometimes struggled financially.) It's true: hard work and a "never say die" attitude do pay off. When the newspaper The European put out a story in late 1995 about Gerhard Berger crashing because he had difficulty adjusting to Schumacher's Benetton, Schuey then set fastest lap at the same track that day. I was in shock because I thought it would take a full week or two for him to show some serious speed or good lap times. I knew he was very good but I didn't know he could IMPROVE so damn quickly!

Fabulous footage Marcel, I didn't mind the Japanese commentary one bit. I was too captivated by the sound of a V10 and V12 and all the visuals! Great upload. Cannot believe Patrese and Berger left the door open at the start, but perhaps that was as much down to the skills of Ayrton and Michael. Amazing to think that 20 years later Michael would set the fastest time around these streets in qualifying albeit not getting the pole. We still miss you Ayrton! ATB :-)

great footage! regarding all the talks around assists and shifting I'm not sure if Monaco really gives you an edge as long as you are not in first and can go full speed and I'm sure any F1 driver was able to handle the cars without ABS and TCS - it would just allow them to push a little harder - maybe the gearbox was the main advantage
but Schumacher was one of the greatest drivers in history so he knows his stuff
and stop arguing about it - it gets boring - you should come to realize that if somebody wins as many races and titles in a competition like the F1 it can't be for his mediocrity or are you saying nobody else tried hard enough to challenge him?
ffmdotcom Irving's car was very large too , slowing all the challengers. And Schumacher was always fair , letting Damon Hill or Villeneuve pass without touching their cars.. A great driver but none other has been so outrageously advantaged by his team
@@MBJanus None of Michaels Ferrari Team Mates ever got different technical treatment than him. Coulthard had to let Mika pass in Jerez 97, was asked to let him pass in Melbourne 98 and often later when the Championships went close. Funnily enough he also had quite some mechanical DNF's and screwed Pitstops in the early part of the seasons 98-2000.
Senna had no other choice then to go challenge Prost in order to win something. When Prost left he carefully chose Berger because he knew that Berger was no threat - which is a sentiment Schumi shared as Ferrari offered Berger to continue in 96 as his Teammate.
There might be some Truth to Jos Verstappens Claim in 94 though as Benetton was operating on a far smaller Budget than Williams, McLaren and Ferrari and therefore simply couldn't afford to equip 2 Cars with the same things. The Budgets rose massively with the start of the 90's and Benetton was a team like Sauber, Jordan or Stewart who suddenly had to deal with being involved in a Championship race.

No traction control, no abs, no drs, no servo steering,no brake compensation front/rear or wing adjustments during driving.
If you could drive this you could drive anything and not the other way arround.
Schumi was not my favo driver but along side Senna one of the best to this day.
at not time in F1 there had been „wing adjustments during driving“.
Actually they had traction control (until banned in 94) and something called active suspension which was extremely high tech, reading the road surface to move the suspension in anticipation of bumps and camber. These early 90s cars were extremely high tech. Don't be deceived.

@@johnduncan5117 to be ultra-precise: the first car to have TC was the 1992 Williams FW14. The first follower was the 1993 McLaren MP4/8, Benetton had TC in their B193 from Monaco on (where Michael Schumacher retired while leading to the vibrations caused by the TC). After the 1993 season, it was banned, even though up to date rumours are going round whether or not the 1994 Benetton B194 had an illegal TC (the FIA impounded the car's engine control unit and found out that there was still the TC software on it).
amazing how far f1 has come technology wise just compare shumy's steering wheel to a modern day steering wheel ... 100 more buttons! even more impressive is how the old school racers were able to tame the raw cars of the past
Schumacher went from a team he won 2 titles in a row with, to a team that hadn't won in the sport for over 2 decades. He helped to build the foundations of that team over the next 3 years and then went on to dominate with that team for the next 5 years. He helped and was a crucial part in building their success.
He also came out of retirement and helped developed Mercedes into what they are now before Hamilton took the seat He was in. Brawn himself said Schumacher had an immense and crucial part to play in developing the car and team into what it was to dominate the sport with Hamilton at the wheel.
Schumacher has and always will be the greatest F1 driver the sport has seen, alot don't like him, but anyone with common knowledge of F1 won't dispute that. Hamilton is a great, that can't be disputed. But he is not the greatest of all time.
Oh to answer about others with poor equipment, Schumacher also has the most wins in a non championship winning car even though he has less wins than Hamilton, further proof Hamilton is only great with the greatest car against the other greats records.
