Please don't take down your first video - the fact that it took you a whole year to get to gather your courage to actually do it makes it too important to be discarded. Take care, Clare!
I enjoy your honesty when you answer questions! Also, I'm glad you take care of YOU, because without you, there wouldn't be all the great video's you share with us. Sometimes people don't realize how wearing these things can be. I also struggle with depression as well, so I get that. Hope you are having a great day!
As a fellow sewing video creator, I appreciate you addressing the realities of creating content and making it feasible, both mentally and monetary. I think most people would be shocked how little we make on the actual videos and how much work that goes into them. And I too feel the bar is getting raised all the time (often by ourselves) so it's hard to keep up and stay confident in what we create. Nowadays I take breaks here and there and lets my mojo decide when and what I create. We have to be kind to ourselves and when struggling with a CI, self-care becomes even more crucial
Thanks for sharing Claire, I've often wondered how earning works for you tubers and thought about putting out some content, but for the now I'll stick to enjoying being this side of the screen. I absolutely love your channel. I was a midwife, but got struck with Lyme disease 11 years ago and it's left me with ME/CFS, sleep issues and other stuff related. Started sewing again 2 or 3 years ago and it really has helped bring me to life again. It can be so hard to push yourself into doing things, so my hat is off to you for managing to be so productive. Keep up the good work Claire. and thanks again xxx Hugs from East Sussex. xxx
It can be a good creative outlet and good way to connect with others but not sure it’s worth it for the money. That said I feel part of the reason I don’t get big views is because I’m not very confident so if you’re more confident you may be more successful than me. The other side of it is you have to be jack of all trades - seamstress, tv presenter, camera operator, film editor, director, hair and make up, wardrobe, marketing., pr, social media manager, sound engineer you name it!! Saying all. This, I do it because it’s the best way I have to make money right now so I wouldn’t want to put you off if in a similar situation. Sorry to hear of your struggles too glad sewing has helped.
I feel you on the capsule wardrobe; I got excited about projects that fall completely outside the guidelines I set for myself and it all crumbled from there. If there's some other spoonies walking thru here: I've been getting some things done by having multiple projects of different types going at the same time. Some days I can pin and sew, other days I can trim printed patterns and put the sheets into a folder, some days I can only research. I wake up (also non24, lol, so "day" is arbitrary) and feel out what my body and brain can do that day (and keep assessing thru the day and change tasks or rest as necessary). It's not a perfect system, but I went from making nothing for years to a few completed projects last year!
Great advice thank you for sharing. How do you manage the non24? Do you just go with thee schedule your body dictates? I find it hard mentally when I’m sleeping all day (although I get physical benefits from sleeping when I need to).
@@Penguinandpear Yeah, I realized that trying to do anything other than sleep when I finally crash and just wake up whenever--I was just wasting hours in bed -trying- to sleep. Schedule generally proceeds forward an hour a day, but this is just an average . No healthcare = no appointments, which helps make this possible. ;D Some weeks are real lonely, tho, but those are also some good uninterrupted work times! It's a weird ebb and flow, always watching fatigue and pain and fog levels + a rotating schedule, but I do think overall I'm doing better with these changes
I love your tips on motivation! It's amazing to me how many sewists forget that *not* sewing is an option (assuming it's not your job, anyway). I would add that cleaning and organizing my sewing space also helps. I just start putting things away and tidying up, with no expectations of getting it all done. I just go with the intention of making progress. My room is not huge, so I usually end up getting it quite clean. And then I think how fortunate I am to have my own little space and I just sit in it for a while. A clean, organized space makes me want to use it. Great video, thanks!

You would be surprised how many Americans would be interested in the Great British Sewing Bee. We want it, but we can’t get it!! 😢 Some have been able to see a few episodes on You Tube and we love it!
I loved the Q & A. Thanks for your honesty, Claire. It is so easy for some of us who have a desire to make a "mountain of projects", but then it really becomes overwhelming to think about starting just one. Like you said, start out slowly and motivate yourself to start sewing again. Thanks for your video. Cheers from Canada.
You are amazing, Claire! You are pragmatic, empathetic and clever! Finding you on RUclips reinvigorated my love of sewing and I thank you! I took down a wall and made myself a sewing studio I adore! I’m a plus-sized lady and don’t have a lot of desire to sew clothing, but have started sewing bags. Less than 6 months later I’m buying an industrial machine (Juki) and will have a sewing business ready when I retire from teaching in 5 years! A huge question I have concerns Essential Tremor which I have. I think you also have a tremor and I’d love to hear any tips for sewing with the shakes! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You changed my life!!!
Wow thank you for sharing your story, that’s so inspiring. You took a wall down?! That’s amazing! Yes I do have tremors. Ive never been diagnosed but had it since birth and runs in the family so I think mine is also ET. I’m not sure which part of sewing you struggle with the most but for me it’s threading a needle and anything intricate. Wearing reading glasses helps a lot with threading needles. Going slower when sewing at the machine to be more accurate. Is there anything in particular you struggle with?
Thank you so much for sharing. I watch your channel because you are real and don't make me feel like I'm failing for not cranking out a steady stream of immediately perfected projects! Best wishes to you! 💐
I would not watch a video on the GBSB because I hope to see the show one day and don't want to spoil the experience. I wish they had that show available to watch in the US. Love what you do, Claire.
Thank you for sharing. I, too, have ME, and it can be devestating! I hate to rest, so I am always fighting the fatigue. Silly, I know. I always have that voice in my head saying, oh, get over it, everyone gets tired! My husband is better at making me rest than I am LOL. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. You were one of the first sewing vloggers I watched, and you are still one of my favourite vloggers!
A lot of people have had success with the Janome M7 Continental, which is pretty expensive but not as expensive as an industrial machine. It is a wonderful machine.
The question: “what was your favorite project?” Got me thinking. I’m 72, and my favorite project was the wardrobe I made for myself before going to college. I made lined plaid wool cape, pants 24 piece pleated skirt, jumper, quilter puffer coat, hats, etc. I matched all the plaids, and did a beautiful job. My mom was in the hospital and I didn’t have anyone to ask questions of. Looking back, too bad it did the whole wardrobe in autumn colors, and learned later I had winter coloring. Now that I’m retired, I don’t need much dressy clothing.
Good question! I’m not sure! The sienna jacket by closet core was rewarding as it was so involved. I made a dress when I was first sewing but not in my size and fell in love with that as was amazed I made it lol
I always assumed that penguin and pear were just two plus sized body shapes, with the penguin being top heavy, like myself (thinner me is an hourglass). To explain: without good clothes I look like I expand just beneath the shoulder line and go straight down all round with two arms flapping at my sides lol! However, clothes that are designed for my body shape give me back my waist or detract attention from my size by making me look more proportional. Really choked me up to hear you describe fatigue the way you did. I have tried to explain it like you, similar to having the flu when you *can't* get out of bed, to friends, family, even nurses and doctors in a ward before, have never heard someone else describe it the same way, thanks Claire.
Girl, i think you'd look good blonde! And you are Awesome! Ive loved all the garments you have sewn/ showed on the channel. Hope you have a wonderful day!
I’ve recently subscribed to your channel, as a plus size woman who is also pear shaped I find your fitting videos both very informative as well as motivational. Thank you 😊
I have a recommendation for audio books. If you want a fun mystery series set in Victorian England with a bit of magic thrown in, then I recommend the Glass and Steele series by C.J. Archer. I listen to them through my library but because they are audio books, I'd think Audible would have them. One caveat: the first book's narrator doesn't do a very good job with accents. The rest are well done and they are a fun escape. Thanks for your excellent videos. I love your channel!
Wow, you were so honest in this video. Your income from you tube and your personal info. I admire you tremendously, sewing and vlogging while struggling with health issues. I like your blouse, I'm looking forward to the video on 21st. Lots of love Claire, you're a star 🌟
Love your content and you’re a real inspiration for me(as I deal with fluctuating energy levels also-related to thyroid and sleeping disorders on my end) I love your brown hair color it makes your green eyes pop! Not for sure about you going blonde; yellow hair might drab down the yellow pigments in your green eyes. You could try Carmel highlights to see how you like it before going all blonde.
Sewing and chronic illness can be so tricky. I love finishing projects, I hate to leave things unfinished but I don't have a choice. I'm always trying to find the right balance!
Thanks for this Clare, I find your informational videos really helpful. I just used one to do move a dart, brilliant. Really easy to understand and follow. I’m really at the beginning of my sewing life, and I have inflammatory arthritis and low vision which makes life miserable at times. Pacing is incredibly important but when I get too enthusiastic I always end up overdoing it. I’ve just started making toiles on your advice, and as a result realised how complicated getting your pattern to fit you really is. I think your videos have helped me get more insightful and I’m learning a lot. Xxx
I am a relatively new subscriber to your channel, and have binge watched you since subbing. I have found that your channel is my go to when I need to troubleshoot, or need inspiration. Take care, sweet girl. X Edit: I need audible to sleep too, but I like thrillers, apocalypse type stories, or comedies, so I end up not falling asleep quickly! I have over 300 audiobooks! I also chronic health issues, bless you for being so open! You looked gorgoeous in your wedding dress!
Just about halfway through, but as you were commenting on working with a serger and taking photos, I have a scrap book where I made a sample on a small piece of fabric, stapled it to the sheet, and then the settings are on the other side of the paper, so I can refer back to it. I also have label tape on my serger with what each knob does, so I can just look at it and go. They are easily removable, and if I cannot remember I just look at it. I know analytics are a huge problem, but honestly, you are so relatable, and I love what you do, so just keep doing what you do.
I have very recently discovered your channel. My first look at you was measuring yourself for clothes that fit! Well I was impressed by your knowledge, and your honesty. In fact I think you are really quite a poster girl for us bigger women! And I find your very expressive face engaging and attractive! So take the compliments girl and enjoy "em.
Thanks for being so open with your answers. I’m not sure exactly if my sleeping issues are caused by the same thing as yours but around 12 months ago I started working nights, one week on, one week off. When I agreed to initially cover the night shift I thought I’d crash and burn after a couple of months but I’ve never been so happy with a work schedule. I can, very surprisingly, quite happily work all night then get home and, after a cuppa, snuggle down completely guilt free in bed and I’m out like a light. I do however have a very pronounced two hour sleep cycle. I hate having to get up but it’s much easier at 6pm than 6am. PLUS I discovered that I love dawn. But only from being awake all night... wake me up for it and I’ll not be responsible for the consequences! Since working nights (now a permanent situation) I work off my body clock, not a 24 hour clock and love love love it. X
That sounds more like delayed onset sleep cycle. I’m glad you’ve found what works for you! Feels amazing to sleep properly doesn’t it. Mine goes all around the clock and mentally I’m happiest waking up around 6 or 7 am which surprised me as I was always a night owl when younger.
Claire, I love your honesty! 😊 I first found you when you were reviewing the sewing bee maybe last year? I love your blouse, it looks really lovely on you. Thank you do much for taking the time to vlog. You are doing great. 👏
Don't go blond but the red looked good. I totally understand when you are not up to sewing you can't I have U/C and when I get tired it is all I can do to sit and read or watch your wonderful channel. Stay well
If you don't listen to you body it will stop listening to you. Living with a chronic illness is different and it DOES control you and never the other way around. My thoughts are with you and your struggle. Take the time you need to get you mind and body working together again. I love your top and I'm looking forward to how you made it. Regards Christine 🙋♀️🇦🇺👌👕😍🤩😍
Hi Claire lovely to see your vid pop up in my feed. Prepper princess ( I like the frugality, not the prepping) has a huge channel and posts very regularly and yet said she made $28,000 USD last year from YT. I thought well better not give up the day job then! I think there is something very interesting about YT as a creative medium though. I only know one person with ME except you and she isn't able to do much at all, so you are doing great - and I always enjoy your videos. Ok, better go and see if my husband has brought any sweet stuff into the house....:)
Such an interesting video Claire, thank you for taking the time to chat and for being so honest. I’m sure you do look after yourself but do ensure you take all the time you need and take care.
Audible book series recommendation The seven sisters by Lucinda Riley… it’s a book series and a brand new follow up book in due out in Autumn 22… which I am dying to listen to. Love your channels xx
Yeah I was blonde when I was younger. That’s why I won’t do it until my hair is in good condition. There are products you can use that are less damaging these days but you do have to be careful
Thank you for the video! I started watching this vid because I'm nosey/interested about RUclips/RUclipsr. But now I'm on a watching/interaction binge on your videos to get them boosted/increase views! I am learning to sew my own clothes but slowly because the motivation/confidence is rare. 🤷♀️ Keep you the great work! ❤️
Glad to see you again! You were one of the first vloggers I started to watch when I got back into sewing during the first UK lock down .... you provided so much useful information, especially about pattern altering.... I’m a similar shape to you. I do get a bit fed up with having to do so much work on a pattern before I can even cut it out and that’s what stops me from being enthusiastic sometimes, even though I have a few tried and tested ones. I usually make something for my husband then because I can make something straight out of the packet for him. Your shirt looks great and I live the fabric .... looking forward to seeing the video on that .... looks like a Gilbert 🤔
Thanks Denise. I always felt the same about so much pattern altering. The actual sewing takes less time than the fitting. But now I feel it’s so worthwhile! No the shirt is not a Gilbert.
I believe many creative people have gone thru alot of mental angst this past chaotic challenging times, I've also have take a few time outs this past year to help....things will get better for all us ....😷👋
Hey Claire, thanks for the video. Always happy to see you. Please stay brown, it suits you and makes you look younger. See you on the next one. Stay well xx
Hi Clare, sorry to hear that your mental health has taken a tumble, glad to see that you are on the up again, ms is a nasty piece to have and I think your doing amazing, I have crps and it's hard, good days and bad, I wish you a summer of good days 🌞💖
Enjoy your channel. Appreciate your honesty and the fact that nobody's life is perfect. Keep on, you are doing a good job. Wanted to recommend an interesting book on the history of fabric, The Golden Thread by Kassia St. Clair. It's interesting to us who enjoy sewing and quilting.
Like the brown color, but I have tried wigs in different shades to find out what looks good. Just happy to see you as you are. On-line "window shopping" a novel idea thanks Claire.
I've been taking a break myself...almost 4 months ago I lifted something too heavy and strained the deltoid muscles in my left arm and inflamed the router cup in my right shoulder! So I am using PT tape, but not my usual activity level. Very little sewing...
@@Penguinandpear thanks, physical therapy and massage therapy helped but any injury takes ti.e to heal, and I'm 71&1/2 so I'm not recovering like I would have even 10 years ago.
Oh my gosh I have the same sleep issue. No one understands that one. When I try and explain my need for a solid 6-8 hours of sleep but not at the same time each day no one really understands it so I get a lot of well meaning advice on melatonin and sleep aids. My circadian rhythm is about 19-20 hours awake. The difficulty has left me in a constant state of tiredness.
Yeah im usually awake 18-19 hours. It’s so hard to deal with. I spent years using nytol and melatonin when working and was lucky to get three hours sleep. Sometimes I’d go to work on no sleep. It was exhausting. I stopped the tablets after giving up work and now feel a lot better for sleeping when. I need to. I couldn’t go back to a 9-5.
That is really good to know because people kept telling me I just wasn't taking enough to go to sleep or I just wasn't slowing down enough. It is kind of a relief to know it is a real problem. I was kind of starting to doubt myself since having kids and the constant struggle to get up. Lol
Claire, you look lovely today! I love all your videos. Could you talk more about how you lost 100 lbs? Would love to hear it, I’m in the same boat. Love the advice on how to arrange sewing room. Your room looks great! I have to break down the sewing process into bits too, because of a bad back. I learn so much from you. You should be confident! Your my go to for info. Your knit videos really help me. Can’t wait for your next video! Have a great day🙂
I lost 100lbs about ten years ago. Started off going to the gym with an instructor who was very supportive and I tried quite a few diets but the way I got most successful was intuitive eating with Paul McKenna. I lost a lot in a short period of time and it was around that time I became very unwell with ME so I always wondered if that played a part. Thanks re confidence but I have complex ptsd so unfortunately it’s not easy for me to be confident.
Love your videos, Claire. Love your brown hair. It gives color to your face. Going blonde may make you look too pale and washed out. Love the GBSB! Was able to watch early seasons, but then was not available. (I'm in the US). Sure wish they would become available again - Love that show. Sorry about your health problems but it sounds like you know how to handle them. Take care!
if you go blonde I'd go to a hairdressers as it's a drastic change but I'd go for it.I love your blouse. Have you thought of patreon, quite a lot of RUclipsrs are using this to supplement their income.
Hi Claire! Love your videos. Very helpful. My problem with knits is the edges rolling in. I've tried starching, steaming and pressing and it doesn't help. That rolling edge makes it very difficult to work with, pinning and sewing. Do you have any tricks to help stop the curling/rolling edges?
It happens with particular fabrics. I think cotton jersey? You could try other blends (get some samples). Otherwise I would hand baste first or use lots of clips or pins. I think over time it gets easier. If using a sewing machine a walking foot can help
Hi Claire I really enjoy your videos are you on patreon I don't think u mentioned that you are real and honest there are so many sewing videos I can't watch they are too long to much talking in circles maybe it's me but I find it really hard to follow those channels you and karina are my favourites take care claire you are lovely and I am in canada
Thank you Edwarda. Ah Canada I visited there a long time ago! I am not on Patreon any more but I do have channel memberships and a ko-fi account, details are in the description box.
Claire, I think it is rude for anyone to ask you how much you make out of your RUclips videos. It is nobody's business but yours. Thank you for all your videos. xxx
Thanks Pepprina but I don’t mind. I think it’s an important conversation to have. There’s this common misconception that once you have 1000 subscribers you start earning big and also that we youtubers should be giving content for free (I’ve been told before I have no right to have ads!). The truth is this is my job and it’s not a livable wage and by revealing the truth I hope it helps people to understand and be educated. Also if anyone is thinking of doing RUclips to earn money the information will be beneficial.
Don’t go blonde!! Your nan was right in a way-I’m not sure if skin tone lightens but older people do lose color in their cheeks and lips. Hair also tends to dry out and I’m afraid that if you bleach your hair in addition to the natural drying out you might fry it. Blonde might look great on you so no opinion in that regard. I just don’t know how you could do it without damaging your hair. Maybe compromise and add highlights?
Enjoyed this vid - I kind of thought it was Pear because it rhymes with Clare and you maybe liked penguins! 🤔 wonder if there's any scope or interest for making e.g. period clothing/costumes through the ages, maybe linking up with a museum somehow, or a local theatre group. May not be your interest though, as you say, you make what you like and what's comfortable to wear.
Please don’t dye your hair blonde, it wouldn’t look good with your skin. I like the dark brown and a lighter brown would look good too. Love your teaching videos.
Please don't take down your first video - the fact that it took you a whole year to get to gather your courage to actually do it makes it too important to be discarded. Take care, Clare!

I vote for you to stay with your natural haircolor even if you go grey.
White is best. I’m glad I let my salt and pepper go white. I love it!
Thank you 😊
you are very inspiring Claire,Love the top you have on and love the colour of your hair
Thank you, I will look!
Wow, you were so honest in this video. Your income from you tube and your personal info. I admire you tremendously, sewing and vlogging while struggling with health issues. I like your blouse, I'm looking forward to the video on 21st. Lots of love Claire, you're a star 🌟
I second this. You rock, Claire!
It’s difficult!
Omg! I feel this! I'm so struggling with this right now!
@@mellie4174 I'm sorry! It sucks, doesn't it? I spend a lot of time fantasising about projects I don't yet have the energy for 😆
I know this is an older video but I would not dye your hair blonde because I love the way the darker hair color makes pretty eyes stand out on people.
Xxx
You are very good. Ienjoy spending time with you. Continue to be on your life journey.
I think you are awesome too!!
I am a relatively new subscriber to your channel, and have binge watched you since subbing. I have found that your channel is my go to when I need to troubleshoot, or need inspiration. Take care, sweet girl. X
Edit: I need audible to sleep too, but I like thrillers, apocalypse type stories, or comedies, so I end up not falling asleep quickly! I have over 300 audiobooks! I also chronic health issues, bless you for being so open!
You looked gorgoeous in your wedding dress!
Thank you for being so sweet with your comments, binge watching (this really helps me) and sharing your experiences x
Thanks Heidi, great tips there!
Love your podcast. Love the new series.
Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much, very interesting and honest, always loved your videos since discovering sewing, really glad you are here
Thank you glad you enjoyed it (and my channel in general)
I first found you when you were reviewing the sewing bee maybe last year? I love your blouse, it looks really lovely on you.
Thank you do much for taking the time to vlog. You are doing great. 👏
Don't go blond but the red looked good. I totally understand when you are not up to sewing you can't I have U/C and when I get tired it is all I can do to sit and read or watch your wonderful channel. Stay well
Fabulous! I always look forward to hearing from you.
Loved your red hair!
Your dark hair is beautiful.
Yup, I'm a senior and your complexion pales!
we all have too start somewhere, dont take down your fiogs blogs what ever you call it. you are helping people from start all the way till you stop.
Thank you!
Thank you !
Lol you always make me laugh!
Your blouse is adorable! I am looking forward to your review.
Lovely video! 💐
Such an interesting video Claire, thank you for taking the time to chat and for being so honest. I’m sure you do look after yourself but do ensure you take all the time you need and take care.
Thanks Alison
Nice to learn a bit more about you. Keep up the great work!!
Audible book series recommendation The seven sisters by Lucinda Riley… it’s a book series and a brand new follow up book in due out in Autumn 22… which I am dying to listen to. Love your channels xx
Brown colour suits your skin tone - I would keep it. Blonde really hard on hair , my daughter was blonde for a while but hair started to break off.
Keep you the great work! ❤️
I'm so happy i found your page.... love your videos, big kiss from a small island in Azores, Portugal.
Welcome! Great to have you here!!
@@Penguinandpear Thank you :)
Really insightful, thank you very much.
I love the colour of your hair now, it looks really nice.
I believe many creative people have gone thru alot of mental angst this past chaotic challenging times, I've also have take a few time outs this past year to help....things will get better for all us ....😷👋
Thanks for the encouragement Claire
health is always a problem with craft but craft also helps me get through bad days how mad is that xx
Thank you. I have ME not MS 🙂
Sorry auto correct and I missed it 😔
Just finished watching The Qeens Gambit, and loved all the fashion.
It was a great show!
Enjoy your channel. Appreciate your honesty and the fact that nobody's life is perfect. Keep on, you are doing a good job. Wanted to recommend an interesting book on the history of fabric, The Golden Thread by Kassia St. Clair. It's interesting to us who enjoy sewing and quilting.
your hair is beautiful dark..
I am 78 and yes your coloring changes and you get pale more so when hair goes white. Makeup color needs to change also.
Good to know!
Love your videos and your personality!
Sorry to hear you’ve been suffering Janice 😢
@@Penguinandpear thanks, physical therapy and massage therapy helped but any injury takes ti.e to heal, and I'm 71&1/2 so I'm not recovering like I would have even 10 years ago.
Love the talk always very enjoyable and learning more and more
Oh my gosh I have the same sleep issue.
Lol
@@crystal8160 definitely a real problem en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-24-hour_sleep%E2%80%93wake_disorder
Great video Claire you are such an honest lady. Love your hair brown compliments your eyes. Please keep the videos coming look forward to them. X
@@Penguinandpear 😀 thanks for replying. Just know that we all think of you as smart, beautiful and talented!
I used to be on patreon. I now have memberships and kofi.
I dyed my hair blonde when I went grey , but hold off till you really need to as the up keep is to re dye ever 6 weeks
That’s a good point!
Many Americans do have an interest in GBSB, but we can’t even pay to watch it.
Yeah I did state you can’t watch it. That’s why I didn’t get views on that series I did. Most of my audience is from USA.
👍🌹
Hummus balls! Lmao, love it!
My husband mocks me for saying it lol my brain cells don’t stretch to hummus lol
👓👓👓💙
Hummus balls !!!!
Blonde!!! Yes blonde!
Thanks! Yeah that’s not my thing. It does well on RUclips though. Bernadette banner, Cathy hay, Angela Clayton to name a few.
Funny go blonde. Let your gray come in naturally. I love gray hair. Probably not your jam though.
Please don’t dye your hair blonde, it wouldn’t look good with your skin. I like the dark brown and a lighter brown would look good too. Love your teaching videos.
Thank you. I never did go blonde in the end. I’m happy brown now.
