Be happy they only require the apex hearts and no detachable key items. When that's your consolation prize it kinda sucks. Plus they had the gall to make it a plasma machine. Most players would use the Nora thunder warrior which is ass against plasma.
With regards to the slaughter spine near the red-eye watchers, you also have to be careful not to go too close to the storm bird nearby. Had to fight both at once on more than one occasion and it was pure mayhem 😂
If you can see it, it can see you. If you can't see it, it can DEFINITELY see you. If you think you're out of range...wrong. If you think you're too close for it to hit...wrong.
This is handsdown the most intimidating and scariest machine in the game. (Especially the apex version) Even that name gives me chills. Definitely my favorite of all the machines.👌👌

To just observe it to see how epic it looked. Lol Then came back a dozen or so hours later, and stomped all over him with my op gear.😅😂
Fun story, when I finished kappa, I went to the marked SF slaughterspine site and waited for minutes on end to try and override the machine, I feared it at first but then as I kept watching it, it felt more and more “beautiful” like how people call knives beautiful, when I overrid it, I used target arrows to try to make it kill the nearby fanghorns and fire clawstriders when I noticed the limit of movement machines had, I was terribly disappointed, I came back days later for the black box quest and found the unmarked one and thought my overriding triggered a glitch which made the SS travel near the small waterfall,it was scary but thanks to you I now rest assured I didn’t break my game. Thank you Noxious

First time I fought this machine I was terrified, I was running more often than shooting trying to avoid all the plasma enhanced attacks. Thank gods I had tearblast arrows but wow is it tough. Easily one of the coolest machines ever made.
Despite being the hardest machine in the game the apex slaughter spine has much easier weaknesses to exploit like fire and poison allowing extra damage but no purge water to rid you of plasma attacks
@@LeeEverett1 in HFW, You can cheese Fireclaws very easily though, unless you need their sac webbing. Explote both shoulders and belly sacs and Fireclaws become easy. Now Zero Dawn Fireclaws are a complete different beast and waaay harder than Slaugtherpines.
Its crazy how much more difficult a slaughterspine gets even in its regular form when you pop the difficulty from hard to very hard. Oh boy if they ever add an ultra hard difficulty, this thing will be unbeatable, i do wish it had some explosive damage resistance tho, since the spike throwers make tbis fight much easier.
Yeah, in the endgame the advanced explosive spikes are a little OP. Still a pain to take down a slaughterpsine on UH though! I hope they do a NG+ in the future
This one is way easy as long as you don’t give it a chance to respond. Why aren’t more people talking about the Fireclaw?! That lava attack is brutal, plus the fireballs plus a whole chunk of rock and earth.
I have a harder time with Fireclaws only because of the terrain getting in the way. Fireclaws themselves aren't that bad to deal with especially when they are so weak to frozen state. Ropecasters help too. Spike thrower with splitting Spike once it's frozen for a lot of damage.
@@RazielTheUnborn you’re right about the terrain, except when you’re able to hide, then it’s in your favour. But when you use the spikes, do you keep the sac webbing in tact? I never could.
@@Rollingstone2009 So long as I keep the spike damage to it's back, it's gut sac stays in take. If I am bursting it down with multi spikes it's typically right after I freeze it and it's in that small stun. Otherwise, I'll freeze it after tying I down with a ropecasters. If you shoot armor plates you deal less damage but still do full elemental build up. Makes it easier to explode it without getting a spike near it's stomach.

Thank you for the Godzilla reference, I screamed the same thing when I got hit with the plasma beam for the first time. 🤣 I think the Slaughterspine takes the spot as top machine over the Thunderjaw. However, a fight between the two is a tough call. SS is lethal with some range, but the TJ will wreck anything up close.
I think it’s safe to say they took some inspiration from Shin Godzilla for sure! Especially with the tail beam attack. I agree, I think the Slaughterspine would just be too quick for the Thunderjaw to keep up with

There are 2 things with the Plasma Energizers 1. If the Slaghterspine is below like 50-40% Health, he will active the Third Plasma Energizer on his chest 2. When you shoot down the Plasma Energizers while they are charging up when there are only 2, nothing happens, but if you shoot them down when there are 3 active, the Slaughterspine gets automatically the Plasma Elemental Damage on him
there's another Slaughterspine in the Red Watcher site just below the unmarked Slaughterspine site in Landfall. Obviously there's a lot of Red Watchers there but I'm still surprised it's labelled as such instead
Definitely the slaughter spine machine would win against a thunderjaw. That your pick on weak points to a thunderjaw has more then this deadlier machine.
The slaughterspine is an improvement to the Thunderjaw. It can charge and increase its plasma attacks its 180 laser is at the tail where the Thunderjaw shoots from its head. This is done because alot of hunters go for the head especially when the TJ's data nexus is. Tail is used more than just for a swipe. It has more of an array of weapons, 3 tail lancers, 8 spine tail launchers. Where as TJ has 2 of each of its 2 weapons. Its harder to hit its canisters. TJ has frost canisters and sparkers underneath the tail and chest. S Mark 1 has his acid sacs on his arms (shoulder area) and frost canisters on its tail
It also has another rare attack I only saw twice when fighting these things where it uses it spines to shoot out containers/components which Emit laser beams that draw closer to the Center Near aloy
throughout my first playthrough, I repeatedly ran into thunderjaws and slaughter spines, I crapped all over the thunderjaws in my first 2-4 hours, even farming them frequently for EZ loot, but the slaughter spine... I didn't even try I just ran for the hills... and then came back and hid in a bush to spend the next 15 minutes staring at this absolute beauty of a machine, the amount of time I wasted just staring at slaughter spines and appreciating how awesome they look, how fluidly they move, how.. primal their attacks are, truly an embodiment of the dinosaur it's based on (I'm talking about JP3 Spinosaurus since come on, IRL spino is an overgrown croc with a sail), it got to the point I actually felt... bad when I killed my first slaughter spine in the Gemini mission, I spent like a full minute staring at its face (doesn't help that I just killed what is essentially a newborn since the poor thing had literally just been born, only to immediately die shortly after). it truly is a beautiful machine, spectacular movement, Terrifying weapons spectacular sound effect, heart pumping theme song. 10/10, best Machine in the game, my absolute favorite in the entire horizon franchise
The time they put into designing these machines is astounding. So many little details in such a large machine, and it all works together so seamlessly. You can tell they put a lot of love into it. I had a similar experience the first time I encountered one. I remember seeing the map icon first and thinking “woah Slaughterspine… what’s that??” Then I came over the crest of the snowy mountain, heard it’s signature sound, and saw it in all its glory 😍😍😍 I stared for minutes on end as well. But I didn’t fight it. I didn’t want to die just yet 🤣
@@unknown_2552 fighting a slaughter spine that early on in the game is just begging to die, you gotta have some godly levels of skill to pull that off. I unfortunately couldn't have a first experience that spectacular, because before i bought the game, i was watching random videos on youtube while gaming, and without me noticing, one of the videos that come on was somebody fighting a slaughter spine in HFW, and i was distracted, by the time i noticed, he was already mid fight and talking about the slaughter spine, i immediately paused the video but it was too late, the spoiler had made it through, and my first sighting of what would become my fav machine was ruined. it also ruined a part of the theme song. Tho i guess on a good note, it was that video that caused me to truly throw all caution to the wind... i had the game bought 2 days later 😂
I encountered this Machine for the first time without spoilers earlier today. It was that site in the mountains where there are 3 Leaplashers supporting it. It instantly became one of, if not my absolute favorite Machines. It's attacks remind me so much of Shin Godzilla (I wrote this comment before watching the video and you brought it up yourself).
I Remember seeing my first slaughterspine after killing the storm bird. Felt like jurassic park 3 when the phone starts ringing in the spinosaurus, scared the crap out of me.
I've sometimes found that second site with dead slaughterspine and rebels, who are about to loot it. If you are Flying, you might even see as machine falls to death
I found a scripted occurrence. Where rebels will salvage a downed slaughterspine. This must be new because I was shocked to see this thinking it was a bug. This happens at the boat to Isle of spires

Went straight to Hardcore mode after beating Zero Dawn, thinking I was a badbutt, now I'm having anxiety attacks trying to destroy a normal version of this in the Cauldron.
@@unknown_2552 i had to like, use my level 3 Valor Surge, shoot off it’s lower back and aim it’s head or legs. This is in addition to playing merry-go-round with them around 2 big trees with the gap for it to go between. Never want to hunt for it’s webbing ever again in my life if i don’t need it..

Unfortunately, Slaughterspine and Thunderjaw sites are too far apart, so they will likely never meet. Also, in my opinion, the Slaughterspine would... Well... slaughter the Thunderjaw! After all, the Slaughterspine is pretty much the evolution of the Thunderjaw: both possess detachable weapons, but the former's are harder to remove and it resists damage from them.
Here I am after playing since HZD and that fight against the apex version in Burning Shores on ultra hard is almost infuriating me. One damn it from that stupid mouth blast: toast I've disabled almost every other attack and that one is obliterating me. Shitty part is I'll be behind something so it shouldn't be able to hit me but I guess magic? I'll go back to beating my head against a wall some more lol
I think it would be nice if in your videos you showed how to take them down by actually showing combat. Go for the tail first, or cannister? Maybe a tactical guide. Just a thought. Would make videos longer and show diffrent strategies.
when this releases on pc, i hope there is a madman out there with modding skills to the roof with a team behind his back, and make a mod that allows you to ride them, or even follow you to certain parts like lure them to a nearby tremortusk or small group of scorcher to make them battle to the death, that's the only problem with overriding in this game sometimes it's so inconvenient and nonsense.
Even woth direct tear arrows,they take several hits to remove components on ultra hard, making it super hard to cripple.using ropes is probably your best bet for crippling it. plasma is a botch of an elemnt: if you dont catch it before the timers out,your dead. Also,its level 64 Max level is 50. I hate ng+ ultra hard gemini so much.
Question I’m trying to get the components to complete the override quest for the slaughter Spine by the antenna is missing from all the specimens in each location what do I do to correct this?
I’ve noticed that as well. I think they’re tied to mission-specific machines, but I have yet to find one as well! Maybe in the DLC they’ll be utilized? Are you trying to get the primary nerve?
i'm still confused how on earth did the two slaughterspines manage to get into san fransisco cause in the lore these dudes don't have aquatic capabilities. so are they being carried by the strombirds or what
If it’s similar to a real spinosaurus, it might be capable of swimming moderate distances. But then that would still not account for the other machines in SF like Watchers, Stalkers, Clamberjaws, and especially the lone Thunderjaw. So my other theory would be that the water levels have not always been this high, and the Machines were already in SF when the water levels rose, trapping them there

A Slaughterspine would easily kill a Thunderjaw, like that bit from the Boys with Soldier Boy (Thunderjaw) and Homelander (Slaughterspine), where Homelander says, " I'm the upgrade"
Here's the thing about Slaughterspine vs Thunderjaw. The Spine is OBJECTIVELY more powerful than a thunderjaw, hell, even an APEX thunderjaw. How do I know this? What proof is there? In the main mission quest, you face an apex thunderjaw before Thebes. In GEMINI, the quest AFTER Faro's tomb, you fight a non-apex slaughterspine. Think about the progression. You have already fought an apex thunderjaw and the game makes you fight a slaughterspine AFTER. The game itself thinks the slaughterspine is stronger.
I get your point, but that Apex Thunderjaw is already significantly damaged when you face it. It’s also missing weapons and armor. The Slaughterspine is fresh off the cauldron 🤣

Am I the only one that doesn’t find the slaughterspine difficult to kill. I feel like slitherfangs and thunderjaws are more aggressive and harder to kill. (Killed a ton of all 3 mentioned btw)
The outfit is the Tenakth Recon, which can be purchased from the merchant outside of the Base to the west, and the face paint is rewarded after completing Dekka’s side quest “Blood for Blood”
I went into ultra hard ng+. At oevel 46. I had tons of legendary gear,but only my armor was upgraded,and only 2x. I hate gemini cualdron i hate gemini cauldron
When purgewater builds up on a machine, it can cause the “drenched” state. When drenched, it takes more damage from frost and shock attacks, and loses any elemental attacks it may have. For instance, if you “drench” a Fireclaw, it won’t be able to use its flame attacks
They spawn a LOT more frequently at night. What I did to get one to spawn was change the time to night then rotate through the different machine sites til I got one. I don’t believe you have to kill one in order for another to spawn, just have to leave the render area then return. But now you’ll be more than capable of taking an Apex one down!
Unfortunately not as of now. In Horizon Zero Dawn, there was a Thunderjaw Machine Site with 2 of them, so you could have fun and override one to fight the other. I wish they did that again in Forbidden West with the Slaughterspine. Or even a site with a Slaughterspine and Thunderjaw would be awesome! There is a site that has a Thunderbird and Dreadwing however. I’ll be doing a video covering the Dreadwing next!

Forgot to mention the Tremortusk site! It’s cool that they put it way up in the mountains so you can only really access it in the endgame after getting the Sunwing mount. I’m hoping for some type of DLC like the Frozen Wilds where they can add in some more sites like that. Maybe the Blistering Shores??

The spikethrower and blastforge make this fight way easier. Fully upgraded blastforge does so much damage

Taking down a Fireclaw without exploding its sac for the webbing is the absolute worst.

I didn't even try I just ran for the hills... and then came back and hid in a bush to spend the next 15 minutes staring at this absolute beauty of a machine, the amount of time I wasted just staring at slaughter spines and appreciating how awesome they look, how fluidly they move, how.. primal their attacks are, truly an embodiment of the dinosaur it's based on (I'm talking about JP3 Spinosaurus since come on, IRL spino is an overgrown croc with a sail), it got to the point I actually felt... bad when I killed my first slaughter spine in the Gemini mission, I spent like a full minute staring at its face (doesn't help that I just killed what is essentially a newborn since the poor thing had literally just been born, only to immediately die shortly after). it truly is a beautiful machine, spectacular movement, Terrifying weapons spectacular sound effect, heart pumping theme song. 10/10, best Machine in the game, my absolute favorite in the entire horizon franchise
The time they put into designing these machines is astounding. So many little details in such a large machine, and it all works together so seamlessly. You can tell they put a lot of love into it.
I had a similar experience the first time I encountered one. I remember seeing the map icon first and thinking “woah Slaughterspine… what’s that??” Then I came over the crest of the snowy mountain, heard it’s signature sound, and saw it in all its glory 😍😍😍 I stared for minutes on end as well. But I didn’t fight it. I didn’t want to die just yet 🤣
@@unknown_2552 fighting a slaughter spine that early on in the game is just begging to die, you gotta have some godly levels of skill to pull that off. I unfortunately couldn't have a first experience that spectacular, because before i bought the game, i was watching random videos on youtube while gaming, and without me noticing, one of the videos that come on was somebody fighting a slaughter spine in HFW, and i was distracted, by the time i noticed, he was already mid fight and talking about the slaughter spine, i immediately paused the video but it was too late, the spoiler had made it through, and my first sighting of what would become my fav machine was ruined. it also ruined a part of the theme song. Tho i guess on a good note, it was that video that caused me to truly throw all caution to the wind... i had the game bought 2 days later 😂

I encountered this Machine for the first time without spoilers earlier today. It was that site in the mountains where there are 3 Leaplashers supporting it.
It instantly became one of, if not my absolute favorite Machines. It's attacks remind me so much of Shin Godzilla (I wrote this comment before watching the video and you brought it up yourself).
I Remember seeing my first slaughterspine after killing the storm bird. Felt like jurassic park 3 when the phone starts ringing in the spinosaurus, scared the crap out of me.
The first time I saw one of these was the biggest “nope” moment I’ve ever had
I've sometimes found that second site with dead slaughterspine and rebels, who are about to loot it. If you are Flying, you might even see as machine falls to death
1:33 the southern one is good if you struggle because you can stick between the ship wreck for some decent cover.
I found a scripted occurrence. Where rebels will salvage a downed slaughterspine. This must be new because I was shocked to see this thinking it was a bug. This happens at the boat to Isle of spires

@@unknown_2552 i had to like, use my level 3 Valor Surge, shoot off it’s lower back and aim it’s head or legs. This is in addition to playing merry-go-round with them around 2 big trees with the gap for it to go between.
Never want to hunt for it’s webbing ever again in my life if i don’t need it..

Unfortunately, Slaughterspine and Thunderjaw sites are too far apart, so they will likely never meet.
Also, in my opinion, the Slaughterspine would... Well... slaughter the Thunderjaw!
After all, the Slaughterspine is pretty much the evolution of the Thunderjaw: both possess detachable weapons, but the former's are harder to remove and it resists damage from them.

I've disabled almost every other attack and that one is obliterating me. Shitty part is I'll be behind something so it shouldn't be able to hit me but I guess magic? I'll go back to beating my head against a wall some more lol

The apex is literally a robot shin it shoots out it mouth and tail and it has purple glows aswell
I think it would be nice if in your videos you showed how to take them down by actually showing combat. Go for the tail first, or cannister? Maybe a tactical guide. Just a thought. Would make videos longer and show diffrent strategies.

when this releases on pc, i hope there is a madman out there with modding skills to the roof with a team behind his back, and make a mod that allows you to ride them, or even follow you to certain parts like lure them to a nearby tremortusk or small group of scorcher to make them battle to the death, that's the only problem with overriding in this game sometimes it's so inconvenient and nonsense.

Even woth direct tear arrows,they take several hits to remove components on ultra hard, making it super hard to cripple.using ropes is probably your best bet for crippling it. plasma is a botch of an elemnt: if you dont catch it before the timers out,your dead. Also,its level 64

I’ve noticed that as well. I think they’re tied to mission-specific machines, but I have yet to find one as well! Maybe in the DLC they’ll be utilized?

i'm still confused how on earth did the two slaughterspines manage to get into san fransisco cause in the lore these dudes don't have aquatic capabilities. so are they being carried by the strombirds or what
If it’s similar to a real spinosaurus, it might be capable of swimming moderate distances. But then that would still not account for the other machines in SF like Watchers, Stalkers, Clamberjaws, and especially the lone Thunderjaw. So my other theory would be that the water levels have not always been this high, and the Machines were already in SF when the water levels rose, trapping them there

Here's the thing about Slaughterspine vs Thunderjaw. The Spine is OBJECTIVELY more powerful than a thunderjaw, hell, even an APEX thunderjaw. How do I know this? What proof is there? In the main mission quest, you face an apex thunderjaw before Thebes. In GEMINI, the quest AFTER Faro's tomb, you fight a non-apex slaughterspine. Think about the progression. You have already fought an apex thunderjaw and the game makes you fight a slaughterspine AFTER. The game itself thinks the slaughterspine is stronger.
I get your point, but that Apex Thunderjaw is already significantly damaged when you face it. It’s also missing weapons and armor. The Slaughterspine is fresh off the cauldron 🤣

Am I the only one that doesn’t find the slaughterspine difficult to kill. I feel like slitherfangs and thunderjaws are more aggressive and harder to kill. (Killed a ton of all 3 mentioned btw)

When purgewater builds up on a machine, it can cause the “drenched” state. When drenched, it takes more damage from frost and shock attacks, and loses any elemental attacks it may have. For instance, if you “drench” a Fireclaw, it won’t be able to use its flame attacks

I've killed 76 of these trying to get an apex
They spawn a LOT more frequently at night. What I did to get one to spawn was change the time to night then rotate through the different machine sites til I got one. I don’t believe you have to kill one in order for another to spawn, just have to leave the render area then return. But now you’ll be more than capable of taking an Apex one down!

Reboot the game or console. I was in that state, too, there’s a bug, nighttime spawns should be 100% apex.

Unfortunately not as of now. In Horizon Zero Dawn, there was a Thunderjaw Machine Site with 2 of them, so you could have fun and override one to fight the other. I wish they did that again in Forbidden West with the Slaughterspine. Or even a site with a Slaughterspine and Thunderjaw would be awesome!
There is a site that has a Thunderbird and Dreadwing however. I’ll be doing a video covering the Dreadwing next!

@@Antonius17 Exactly like Jurassic Park 3! And just like in that movie, I think I’d still be rooting for the T-Rex (Thunderjaw). The Slaughterspine is awesome but the Thunderjaw is so iconic.
Forgot to mention the Tremortusk site! It’s cool that they put it way up in the mountains so you can only really access it in the endgame after getting the Sunwing mount.
I’m hoping for some type of DLC like the Frozen Wilds where they can add in some more sites like that. Maybe the Blistering Shores??
