Wanted to see a repair. Saw the replacement. Idk, maybe you even call going and buying a new sub a repair) When I've got my second-hand sub, bought as is - I've needed to dismember, realign and glue back the speaker, replace nearly all the electrolytic capacitors and one damaged resistor and apply fresh thermal compound. That was a repair)
Good info. Nice they stand behind the product so well. I sold this brand for years in one of my first real jobs , late 1970's to early 80's. Having the same issue and already sent an email to Polk for what to do. Glad I seen this though. Mine was purchased new but 6 or 7 years ago probably and on line. Thanks for posting this.
That replacement board is a much better looking design. You got lucky. If anyone owns one of these subs under warranty, I would suggest calling Polk to report the same issue this guy had, especially if your board looks like his old one. Look at the much larger caps all around, the heat sinks for the boards (those 2 big chunks of aluminum) compared to the tiny heat sinks on the old board that look like sheet metal (not exactly, they are a bit thicker, but no where close to those huge chunks of aluminum on the new board. Even the wiring is a much heavier gage on the new board. I guarantee that the old boards were burning up from the lack of heat sinks for cooling and the thin wiring, not to mention all of the capacitors to provide a reserve of power when there is a really loud bass hit in the music or movie. The first board was just far too cheaply made compared to the replacement board. If I had one of these still under warranty, I would report a problem to get that new board.
A power screwdriver is OK if you are on a production line and have multiple screws to deal with. But ... I find that I have far more control using a quality manual screwdriver. Not only is it important for protecting the screw holes in the cabinet, but if you have a difficult to remove screw, the feedback you get with a manual driver is the difference between removing the screw or damaging the head of the screw.

I'm having a similar issue with my subwoofer (same polk model, bought it on Amazon exactly two years ago). The led light no longer turns green when it receives the audio signal. The power led light will remain red when the power toggle switch is in Standby, but when it's in the Auto or On position the power seems to cut off...the led light will fade on/off quickly in red and static comes out the speaker. On the sub itself where the power plugs in. Remove the power plug and right below it there's a slot, you'll need a pick or something and pull it towards you and the little cover comes out with the fuse

Vance, I have the PSW10 and at a louder volume setting, I hear a "rattling" vibrating noise (like something is loose on the speaker). Not a clacky rattle, a deep muffled rattle; like if there was a tear or rip somewhere on the speaker. I turned it down a bit and it subsided, but I don't think it's normal. I called Polk and they told me to take out the speaker and check the insides. I opened the front and removed the speaker to see what was going on and everything looked good. Is the foam suppose to be in a certain spot? Other than the foam kinda just laying around the back of the speaker, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Everything seems in tact and no tears or rips in the speaker housings. Any idea what could be causing this abnormal sound at higher volume?
I would try powering up the sub and running it in the condition that caused the rattle (same volume level, input signal, etc). Then see if something becomes apparent with it apart. Maybe touch a few components inside while its rattling and see if the sound changes. That might help narrow down the source. Good luck!

@@VancesHowTo I heard back from them yesterday. They want $180 plus the cost of shipping, which will probably be anywhere from $50 to $100 to Hawaii. I bought my PSW505 from Amazon 6 years ago for $189 on sale with free shipping. I just bought a Klipsch R-12SW 2 weeks ago from the Klipsch website for $260 with tax and free shipping to Hawaii. Amazon won't ship a 12" speaker to me, no matter how light it is, whether it weighed 15 pounds or 50 pounds. But they will ship a 50 pound 10 inch sub to me. Right now, I don't know if I should get the PSW505 amp or not. I could just spend a little more and get another new sub, maybe a incher for $200 or less, or another 12 incher for a little more.
Thanks for the disassembly example. Noticed a couple of things. First of all, using probes with bare hands to measure line voltage is not advised. Put on rubber gloves first. Secondly, you probably should NOT work on a PC with its power cord connected: most PCs these days have a standby power supply that is ALWAYS ON. And while just touching it ground yourself is better than nothing, if you are working on computer or memory boards, you really should use a wrist strap or a full anti-static workstation. Finally, that isn't a slight difference. ;) It is more like a whole new design/model (perhaps they were having significant issues with the older design).
Good points, Jay. I'm comfortable probing 120v with just the insulation on the probes as protection; not everyone is however, and each should operate in their own comfort zone. Agreed that an anti-static workstation is best for working on a PC, but if you don't have one, keeping the PC chassis grounded, and discharging yourself often is the next best thing. All wires leaving PC power supplies are low voltage and are safe to handle. If you did need to open the power supply itself, you should unplug it. Thanks for watching!
That new board looks like a much better design, with way more heavy duty components. He is not missing anything by losing the BASH amp. The BASH amp looks way too lightweight to power a sub that size. I would guess that they had a lot of failures of those original amps, and had to design a new board with beefed up heat sinks, wiring, and capacitors. He got a much better board. I can't believe that Polk is sending out new plate amps for the owners to replace themselves. I guess the shipping costs were eating up too much money.
HijoDePuta I have had my two PSW500's with their 460 watt BASH amps on them for just over 7 years now. They are way beefier than these subs need. BASH is also a very renown company. A lot of audio companies use their amps. Also, you can send your products back to Polk or they will send you the replacement part like his guy chose to do.Why would you send back a huge box just for a plate AMP? You have no idea what you are speaking on. Makes you look foolish.
+greebuh I never bashed BASH amps. I simply pointed out that it is obvious that the new amp is beefed up a good bit from the old one. I never insulted your subs at all, and there was no need to make it personal. And yes, I am very surprised that a company would send an electronics board out for a customer to replace, since most companies are paranoid about letting customers anywhere near electronics. It makes you look a bit foolish if you can't understand that this is an unusual practice. Most manufacturers will void your warranty for removing a cover. I am not saying it is bad. I wish more companies would do this.but it is very unusual in this lawsuit happy world. But I can't imagine Sony's lawyers letting them send a board out to a customer to replace, and most audio companies are the same way. I have an Emotiva amp that is modular. You simply drop in a new amp module to add more channels. When I asked if they could send me two new ones to drop in, they refused to do that.
You don't need beefy heatsinks or transformer for a BASH amp module. You cannot make superficial comments on electronics without knowing anything about it.

I was thinking about buying a crossover and turning my dead PSW505 into a passive subwoofer.
Hi!:9 can I direct wire rca in jack to my Polk Audio sub that's wireless?!:)
That is not the same amp that was on the sub from the factory. The originals are BASH amps and the replacement doesn't say it.

I have had my two PSW500's with their 460 watt BASH amps on them for just over 7 years now.
BASH is not a company. It is a Canadian amp technology.
i am fishing for help ,my validine sub makes a hum when the receiver is off ,when i disconnect the wire between them it stops ,i had changed the wire ,changed elect plugs tried different receivers ? the sub has been used with my old onkyo reciver for the last 12 yrs with not a peep.just changed the reciver for a new one and now i have this hum . if anyone has an answer better than swinging a dead cat over it and spitting beer at it i can use the help.
Thank you! thank you! for this video. my psw505 power indicator led just died but the i still get sounds from the sub. contacted polk support and they said they are going to order the amp for me. are they going to replace the amp for free?. my psw505 is only 13 months old. i'm glad i found your video and if they send me the replacement amp i know what to do. 👍
I just received my replacement amp from Polk for my 505 it is identical to the original from Amazon I purchased 2 years ago.
Have to say I was surprised that they did not include instructions, but very pleased with the company standing behind their products without question.
My problem arose once I removed the plate/amp, but I cannot get to where the two wires (black & red) connec- tion to to the speaker, given the new one came with new wires connected to the amp.
the red one will not pull off its connection on the amp.
Anyone have a suggestion or had this issue?
Sure appreciate any help offered.
Thanks, Jim
I called and was told that it was discontinued and they couldn't send me one ... anyone know where else to get one at a reasonable price?
please let me know anyone
my subwoofer is it difrent model
that one is only red light on
green light off why this happening plz let me know
Please give schematic diagram
My sub keeps on tripping fuses. Can't get it to work. I'm so confused. Happened out of nowhere
Why the locking tab?
I'm not sure why they did that. Maybe because of the vibrations inside the sub, they thought it would work loose over time.
Hi, I need full service manual for Polk Audio PSW350, Bxoz some one has removed some resistors diodes and return back to customer. Now I need to repair. Pls... Support us...
Where was the fuse?
Yeah, I'm surprised he didn't check the fuse and Polk sent him a new one. The fuse is built into the power receptical, use a flat-head screwdriver to pop it open. Mine just died, too, but the power light does come on for me... I'm hoping the speaker wire popped off, otherwise I'm calling Polk.
ETA: blast, I read ~4 ohms on the speaker wires, so it's still connected. I think my amplifier is bad. I'll call on Monday.
@@JeffWard I almost threw away my LW-10 just now. I thought to check the fuse and it's blown. Not bad after 15 years of use to only have to replace a fuse.
I need to call Polk audio myself I got The Polk audio model PSW108 From Amazon and when I open the package and tried to put it on it was nothing. No lights no sound absolutely nothing I’ve tried so many different combinations that it doesn’t matter there’s no power but I still tried. I need to call them.
Thank you so much for your video and encourage me to do something instead of staring at a nice subwoofer that I can’t use and I have six speakers I have two clips towers I have two bows 901 for the high sounds and I got to poke audios never mind to subwoofers clips and just Polk audio. I also am running up the Yamaha and a pile control alcohol and all that other stuff it’s really good when I play my drums I can use my headphones cause I’m like Tronic but I also can play through the pile you can even hook up my mind to it so my daughter could sing so it’s a really good good set up finally you know.
You didn’t trouble shoot the original problem you just had the whole thing swapped for a new one. That’s not really possible now a days. I’m going to swap out the power supply. (My sub came with the new board you got)
Since it was under warranty, and the replacement part was free, replacing the whole board was the approach I took. Thanks for watching!
Vance's How-To Video Library I ended up buying a mini Universal 300w Subwoofer amplifier from Fosi Audio. It’s amazing, if you ever experience the problem again I highly recommend the fosi audio subwoofer amp.
Mine its only on red light And not working at all
This is the worst 12" subwoofer of polk audio the amp will fail. And im out of warranty
very true...
Agreed, is pathetic , the sub sounds great but I need to try to fix myself since prob just some capacitors on the board
Replaced all board? Why? You do not know how to find a damaged part?
In my case, I got the replacement module for free from Polk, since it died while still under warranty.
@@VancesHowTo Ok, perfect! It was better.
Not a repair... That's a replacement.
Eso no es repacion
I wouldn't call this a repair, I would call it a replace. repair inclines you used that voltmeter on the amp to find the issue that caused it to take a dump. you could have bought a whole new sub off amazon for cheaper than you paid for that replacement amp.
I totally agree. All I did was a replace of the amp module. In my case, I got the replacement module for free from Polk, since it died while still under warranty.
Not really much of a repair. More like a swap.
Do you have the number to polkaudio for a replacement panel?
