Especially Oliver stone, like Joe said he's really lived such an interesting life and has such a unique view on how the world works. We need more people who think like him.
In my family older men never talk about their emotions, it is amazing to see Mr. Stone open up his heart and tell us about his emotions growing up, and how he didn’t conform to the environment he was raised in, but still found out his path with such honesty to his being. Thank you for this.
My dad was a Vietnam vet. A Corporal in the first wave of Marines to go over in 65. He did 3 tours. He was a radio guy. Walking target cause he was always with a high officer. He was also a writer, and that's how I got to know him and his war experiences. I got a scholarship to college on a paper I wrote on Platoon , and its affects on me and learning about my pops. What movie influenced you the most was the topic. The war broke him in ways that he could never peice together again. I love this movie.
Regardless of the interview, this is always my favorite comments section. Full of free-thinkers, rebels, intellectuals, and A LOT of funny and witty people. I’ve learned so much and I’m grateful. Love y’all and thank you!
Why didn't he prep for Elon musk or Snowden like he did for this one? I think Joe who says he doesn't read the comments is starting to read the comments. He is now unfortunately way too important for society and culture in general to be unprepared he now has a duty almost to translate and reportEven though that's the last thing he probably wants.
@@noahziegler3478 The Snowden interview was just as good and as well-planned s this. And who really gives a fuck about Elon Musk? He's just a guy rolling in someone else's money, with antiquated ideas. Musk is largely all talk, and no action. He uses the skills of others to gain notoriety and takes all of the credit. He's far from articulate, if you actually listen to anything he manages to mumble.
Peter Wiggett I’m living comfortably in NYC: self funded on just a teacher salary with dozens of weeks off, and it’s still obvious the US needs to tax the wealthy, immediately IMO. Not based on ‘complaining’, just looking at healthier democratic nations around the world.
Yea, I wonder why it abruptly got cut off. He was getting a bit tired, maybe even some PTSD kicking in from reliving some of the stories/movies. Who knows.
He's a good conversationalist. A good interviewer finds response with people they dont like and doesnt like them. Few people are good at that. Being biasless makes you too robotic, and being to full of bias can create walls. It's hard to find the middle ground. I'm not convinced Joe is great at interviews, but he's a fun guy to talk to and he seems decent at keeping people engaged. He's also a searcher, and curious, which helps him find conversation pretty well with most people.
coldworld5..... He's the Best American chatshow host, and he's not even on tv. One of my favourite interviews was with Him and Louis Theroux. Do you know if he's interviewed Tyson Fury?
Correct... he makes a three hour long episode with Pauly Shore!! This is a serious man though, Joe likes comedians, for some reason he finds them very interesting.
What a person Stone is. The most understandable of human being in the world. Not just a great film making but also a great human being. Thanks for everything you done.
Your dad only thought that because of the necessary post war propaganda. Even the wisest men dont see all ends. The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima was a sin on America that we still refuse to repent of. War is hell, we would have been better off not getting involved with anything outside our soil in self defense.
@@iamnotanumberiamafreeman2021 I'm pretty sure Hitler needed to be stopped. It's like O. Stone said, America became addicted to war and painted Russia as that convenient enemy immediately after WW2. If my dad was a sucker for propaganda, he would have bought that BS too. He's still alive and kickin btw
@E W not nearly the same thing. Hawaii is only a state due to the strategic advantage it gave to the US. Why was there an entire naval fleet there? Who would we use it on? Japan targeted military assets that were clearly a threat to them in the future. We dropped two atomic bombs on two different civilian populations and justify if by "we saved more lives in the long run". That's utter psychopathic none sense. I wouldn't be surprised, nor blame them if the entire world was currently plotting against us. Plot twist, we're the bad guys, and we're too collectively indocternated to even see it. We unleashed an evil in the Pacific theater. And you sit here and try to rationalize it. This is why the world hates us.
Man I felt this convo could have gone for hours. What a life Oliver has led . So many insightful stories. I really need to re-watch Platoon now. Think I can appreciate it more.
Oliver Stone, I can listen to you all day every day!! You really opened up my eyes on so many things!! Untold history was one if the best documentary ever made!!🙏🏽🙏🏽
I just watched Platoon, after he spoke about the Sgts being amalgamations of 4 difference real life Sgts, then I realised Charlie Sheens Character is Oliver.
I didn't either. Everything I've always heard/read about him was that he was a far-left loon. Couldn't be further from the truth. So glad I don't watch cable news anymore - it's all garbage.
This is overwhelming to hear, (as it should be), but priceless. I was raised by a Vietnam veteran. Louisiana was our home. I have every letter my father wrote to my mother. I feel Oliver Stone's words from my head to my toes. Brutal honesty that warmed my heart. Thank you Mr. Stone, and thank you Joe.
Am I the only one that noticed what Joe noticed. The elephant in the room? Oliver was looking down at his phone, seemingly disinterested, a number of times. He yawned, and then towards the end really honed in on his phone. I think Joe dragged it out for as long as he could. Either Oliver was tired, or he had enough, or he didn't want to be there.
@Metropcs Metropcs Watch the first episode and decide if you need to watch the next 9! Most people should be mind-blown on one aspect at least. The sheer amount of archive material; the unique (generally objective but a little socialist) political take; the detail and depth of global viewpoint AND US politics.
@@BoatPatrol You didn't watch the interview. He was highly critical of Obama. "He [Obama] did more damage than Bush in many ways overseas..." Criticizes him for his use of the espionage act to jail whistleblowers. And you're a simpleton who thinks in terms of left right, red blue, good bad. That's all that your sclerotic mind can manage.
After Platoon came out, men were more open to talk about being in that war. Before Platoon, men did not talk about it AT ALL. I am an RN and I thought it was interesting and I never forgot that. Stone's movie started a type of healing process.
Odd and true. I remember two of my parents male friends who served who never spoke of the war prior to that film who then spoke of it afterwards. Crazy.
Listening to this now...I'm not necessarily an Oliver Stone fan, per se, but I'm really finding him an interesting interviewee. I'm a Gen Xer, born just as the Vietnam War ended; my dad is a vet, and he NEVER talked about it. None of the vet dads in my neighborhood did. I do remember that there was definitely an unspoken divide between the dads who served and the few who didn't and chose "activism" instead. It's only been within the last four years that my dad started counseling at the VA to deal with his experiences there. I've personally shied away from watching movies about Vietnam but I just rented Platoon and will be watching it for the first time.
I'm sure Oliver Stone feels pretty grateful to have such an in-depth interview with someone who's eager to know about him, the movies and can actually ask quality questions. I've seen a couple interviews of Oliver Stone that were so painfully superficial. This is a gem that is now in the ethos and part of our film archives, from a legend of film making. We need more of these. The Cohen brothers, Spielberg, Spike Lee, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Lucas, Tim Burton, Clint Eastwood, Ron Howard, Micheal Mann...etc. This should be an entire agenda to archive these great film makers. Joe's the right guy for the job.
Please please please bring on Thomas Sowell, he's 90 years old and time doesn't wait for anyone. I think your audience would benefit immensely by hearing him.
i think right now, thomas is far too old to expresss himself with clarity in a podcast joe is not educated enough to ask meaninful questions to sowell. It would probably be a very shallow interview. Unless joe would actualy read thomas's books like "intelectuals and society" or " the vision of the annointed". These books are related to current SJW and political correctnes's issues but i dont think Sowell has any interest in talking about this. And who can blame him? The guy have debunked the pay gap in the fucking 70's and people are still talking about it like it's a new thing. I love Thomas Sowell to death. I've read almost every book he wrote, multiple times. He's not only a personal hero of mine but also the intelectual standart i aspired to achieve one day. But at this point i just want him to live the rest of his life with peace and dignity, he deserves it. Whoever wants to know about him has to read his books i think it's best if they do so since there would be no distortion.
Oliver is one of the few people who I could just listen to all day. He's amazingly intelligent, has lived such an incredible life, and he has some of the greatest stories! I mean, he gave his dad LSD? Kudos to Joe for not interrupting people like so many interviewers (Howard Stern) do.
It sort of is, but is mostly fictional. Don't take any of the events depicted thereof as remotely historical--particularly the firefights. His real life company commander wrote a (fairly boring) book which sought to "de-mythify" the goings on for Stone's "Bravo Company" depicted in the film. The book is pretty dry. At times almost clinical. But he wasn't trying to dramatize things, which is what Stone was actively (and admitted himself) doing. The "final battle" was paid particular scrutiny, as the film depicts, basically, the entire battalion at that fire-base encampment is overrun by thousands of NVA, where finally the CO (played by Dale Dye) calls for a "snake and nape" drop on his own location. His CO explains--no, not hardly at all. Stone's squad's portion of the perimeter had, indeed been briefly penetrated--enough for author Hemphill to concede in lectures "those guys probably felt like they'd been completely overrun for a few minutes." But significant chunk of Alpha Company hauled ass to reposition and provide backup. The perimeter breach was subsequently contained and the line re-established within an hour or so. For some of those guys, it was probably a scary hour or so. But that ending isn't all that horrifying SOUNDING, or all that "Hollywood." So Stone made up his own battle's climax that WAS Hollywood.
@@Andre-tu3km No doubt he was was taking many of his personal impressions of his experiences to what he would subsequently write for the film. A great many of those impressions must also be recognized as having been developed in hindsight. It took years for him to develop the sense of "what a spectacular waste of our time, our youth and our lives for war," that he wound up interpolating into his script. AT the time, Stone was described as being quite rah-rah Gung-ho (not quite to pathological levels like the character of Bunny portrays...but also not terribly far away from it either). TODAY, he describes his choice to take an extra three months of his enlistment as combat tour, because he was already disenchanted with service, and wanted to cut his service time down. Some guys from his unit believed otherwise-that he really kinda thrived being "in it." It appears his disenchantment really took form AFTER he got back. Some of that talk in this interview about not having any kind of a working communication w/ his father (and probably the rest of his family) in the wake of his tour probably lent quite a great deal with that growing discontent about his participation. A lot of guys just felt immensely out of place, and genuinely marginalized by life back here, to such an extent where their rear-view interpretation becomes more and more a case of regret and "What the f--k did I do all that over there for?!" Not just Vietnam, that's been the case for pretty much every war soldiers have come back for and been willing to document, especially when their sentiments tend to be that they can't talk about it, save maybe with each other (it took almost two generations for WWII vets--the so-called "Good War" -- to be willing to discuss notions of regret or feeling of being Outsiders--or worse--in their own society after coming back...but it's there too).
Depends on what the war is about… Like if a country happen to be throwing people in concentration camps simply because of their religion. Definitely wouldn’t mind going.
You're bang wrong. Stone doesn't support war, but most regular soldiers have no problem with it. Stone should not have joined up. My grandfathers fought in WW1 and my father fought in WW2. They supported the wars they fought in. I served in the late 80s. Every soldier that fought in the Falklands supported the war. So i'm curious as to how you arrive at your conclusion?
A really great interesting interview. I had no idea Stone was such a fascinating down to earth kind of guy until this revelation here. I've begun watching his history docs now. Thank you JRE
More British troops were killed by American 'Friendly fire' in Desert storm, than were killed by Iraqis. In WW2 there was a saying among the British troops that the safest place to be when fighting with US troops was 'Behind Them.' Too trigger happy. Civilians and Soldiers alike.
German WWII Soldier: 'When the British opened fire, we took cover. When we opened fire, the British took cover. And when the Americans opened fire, everyone took cover... ' (paraphrased)
Add Conan the Barbarian also. Stone wrote the original script and while John Milius rewrote it and changed entire sections, enough remained to credit Oliver Stone also.
My favorite part was when Joe "The Great Elk Hunter" Rogan disagrees with a Vietnam infantry veteran about what signifies as a realistic long range shooting capability in the 60s.
Also don't you think if were the KGB, you would also send a guy whom can shoot mosquitos ball from 100 meters away to kill the most important person in the world?
Erik Morales I mean Joe ain’t dumb. He’s probably heard a lot of things about a lot of people he never mentions on air. OS MAY be one that has Ep ties. If I were Joe, I would not bring that shit up with certain A level folks, as not to suicide myself.
I love Oliver.. Hes a rockstar but he has no idea what will hold up with God or if there is a God at all... People say things like that to make themselves feel better when they have no control over things they dont agree with....
My Father was in Nam. We saw Platoon together the first weekend it came out. After seeing it the first time, it actually triggered the PTSD in my Dad. He couldn't sleep for two weeks, and when he did he was waking up in sweats and seeing ghosts. A powerful, powerful film.
it's my favorite Vietnam film. I like Apocalypse Now, but something about Platoon just makes me feel like I'm there and during Apocalypse Now I felt too detached and even if it "looks" good I don't think it has the emotional impact of Platoon, yes I'm saying Apocalypse Now is overrated lol
So privileged to have watche JRE from the very beginning, and watch it grow to this stature. This is amazing. Thank you Joe. Thank you everyone who has been on this fantastic journey with me. It's been a real honor.
I remember my Dad took me to see Platoon in 87' I was 12, and I was so blown away by it, that was the first time I really understood what my old man went through!!
You should have Epstein victim Maria Farmer on. I just listened to her interview with Whitney Webb and she has a lot of important things to talk about. Please amplify her voice Joe!!! 333
I had the pleasure of being Oliver's chauffeur for an evening about 15 years ago. Absolute gentleman. I'm struck by how well he is aging too. Cool dude... fascinating life in the showbiz game.
Stone: "They call them terrorists, but who's a terrorist these days? We can bomb other countries to death and call ourselves the good guys, but we kill a lot of civilians around the world with our bombing." And that's why Oliver Stone is one of the most important directors alive today. Not many mainstream filmmakers can have this opinion and still make major motion pictures.
This is all from Oliver’s point of view. Civilians are killed many times because the ‘bad guys’ shoot from the windows of schools. They store their ammo cashes in hospitals. They fire rockets and mortars from apartment buildings. Any number of other techniques, we in the civilized world, do not do. So no, he is not right. Just because he has had experiences I haven’t had doesn’t make him insightful either. It is his point of view. The truth lies elsewhere.

@@MOE-db8oc I agree with you that that is what makes a side the "good guys" vs the bad guys but I can't understand is if the enemy hides in a school why go blow it up and have so many innocent casualties, why not come up with a different plan... isn't that what generals are for, to come up with different game plans for different situations.... This is also just my opinion, and I have never been to war, and can't imagine the difficulty of playing with human lives on that kind of scale, sending in ground troops to possibly have more casualties on your own side or carpet bombing a village with equal numbers of enemies and civilians..... its frightening what humans can do and I just wish we could stop the war machine from turning
Outstanding program, Mr.Stone Has been a gift to American society. Attitude of Gratitude for all you share. As Americans we must not acquiesce to fear by government gaslighting or political corruption. We must end the war on drugs and start the war on political corruption and child molesters.
Wow, I have never seen Joe Rogan act like such a little girl. He basically bowed down to his hero: Russian Agent, former KGB agent, COMRADE OLIVER STONE
I haven't had so many "I gotta go watch that now" moments in one Joe's podcast before but its always been a matter of time before another episode of his does this to me again

@@mr.e3894 - Way more links to Epstein and Democrats & Hollywood than Trump. My favorite part of this interview was after 1 hour of delving into various conspiracies Stone blows the Epstein story off as, there is nothing really there.
I had no idea of Stone's background but its obvious when you put the pieces together. Old school Americana. Mr. Stone..you sir, are the man, the real deal.
Justin Horan Give it a couple hours they’ll be someone replying to you about what a piece of shit liberal he is. Not that that’s my opinion I just know society these days.
He seems like an older soul so to speak. Someone with a deep sense of conscience, ethics, and empathy. Someone that learns from his mistakes and has a sense of responsibility to others and society at large. These traits are pretty rare in Hollywood it seems.
Ashley Stokes - Sooooo...you’re saying those people are famous. Got it. Oliver Stone is the Old Guard rebel. It’s like Nicholson or Pacino or DeNiro. Not that Norton or Downey aren’t amazing.
Oliver Stone sounds like a guy who now knows that the lessons he has tried to teach us have gone nowhere. And that's a pretty depressing thought. Great interview.
yes indeed. Not just his lessons, either. MLK's lessons and Ghandi's went out the window. Orwell's warnings have been ignored too. Humanity has a very short memory. And technology is making them even shorter. Actually, I kinda mean that in the most literal sense. Our phones not only remember for us, but they more or less dictate what we *do* remember. Not to sound too hyperbolic but that makes me feel like we're living at the end of history.
at the end of the podcast, I tear out, why?.... because people like that who pursuit the true not to themselves but for the people....and not only to the American people but to the World. give me much respect for Joe and Oliver Stone
Wouldn't have done any good. Oliver Stone is a perpetual low-talker (in 'Seinfeld' parlance), not a real jokey type of guy either--probably stoic even delivering a joke. The low-volume talker is particularly difficult for me on a very personal preference level; however, Oliver Stone is one seriously phenomenal artist in my opinion. One of the greats of all time (DUUHH). I've watched a number of his movies more than ten times and own them too: 'Born on the Fourth of July', Plattoon (iconic classic), Scarface ('80s Masterpiece, De Palma), The Doors (incredible), 'U Turn', Natural Born Killers, JFK (another iconic not to miss film), ...I mean like forget about it, he's freakin' extraordinary! He even stated that he liked First Blood (another personal absolute fave..along with ...Fourth of July and U Turn). I have a ton of gratitude and admiration for this man. Thank you sir, from the bottom of my heart for all you do and have done.
Oliver is the Leonard Cohen of movies...perhaps his time in Hollywood. Bravo. His insite and wisdom was whispered in his comments. Thank you wise-one. Eye opener.

For real. It seems like people get pretty “petty” in the comments and I sometimes think the same way but for the most part, I feel like these interviews/conversations are very insightful.
If Oliver can keep himself awake for the length of it all. I don't remember a guest yawning during any of the podcasts before. Maybe I'm wrong, but to yawn while talking about how Epstein was murdered in prison? Holy cow!
I just sat through this podcast and I'm absolutely blown away. Joe is arguably one of the best interviewers in the world right now. the respect and reverence that he had for this man was absolutely incredible. there are too many singular things to touch on but one thing I would like to say is he should definitely make that Martin Luther King movie. I understand where Oliver is coming from he's a saint in the black community and he doesn't want to touch the on the adultery issues but I think the world really needs that right now. What an absolute legend. Thank you so much to Mr. Stone for giving 2 hours to us.
mr. stone is a very deep thought minded individual. you could tell that he truly lived, and seen more than any of us watching this podcast. i used to always hear that "insert movie here" was directed by oliver stone, and i would immediately shun it because i didnt want to see these long, drawn out scripts that would only have a couple of good scenes. i now know "why" his movies are that way. i will have to go back and watch all of them again so i can truly understand what he was going for. this was an enjoyable podcast.
maybe that's the reason you hate "everything". Your spectrum of "everything" sounds quite limited. If i were you i'd work on the radical expansion of that. Only stupidity is infinite.
People hate on Alexander so much, sure it could of been condensed down to two hours, but loved how much detail and the long scenes even if it felt it “dragged on”
Saw Platoon as a teen, signed up post 9-11-01. Glad to say that everyone was on the same page and morale was high. An all volunteer force made the difference, everyone thought so.
I'm sure it does. I mean, how do you "make" a bunch of civilians become soldiers and successfully win a war, when those people don't want to be there, and don't believe in what they're doing? Good luck with that...

Why didn't he prep for Elon musk or Snowden like he did for this one? I think Joe who says he doesn't read the comments is starting to read the comments.

Hands down one of the Best episodes ever. Extremely interesting and down to earth man.
I'm sure Oliver Stone feels pretty grateful to have such an in-depth interview with someone who's eager to know about him, the movies and can actually ask quality questions. I've seen a couple interviews of Oliver Stone that were so painfully superficial.

man, you meant like joe usually does? :-)
I had no idea Platoon was based on Oliver Stone's real life military experience and real people. What a legend.
theMidsizeLebowski He made a cameo as the Battalion Commander in the film as well.
@@NevrSilent Regardless, it's clearly a deeply personal film, especially if viewed through the eyes of the Charlie Sheen character

And that's why Oliver Stone is one of the most important directors alive today. Not many mainstream filmmakers can have this opinion and still make major motion pictures.
@rockn roll I agree. But it is.
Joe didn't do proper research it seems. How could he miss that?
This is what Joey Diaz would look like if he kept selling Subaru's

Oliver Stone has the best documentary eye opening highly recommended
Its fitting that the first person to yawn at Joe Rogan on his show would be Oliver Stone. Boss level.
Yawned when joe mentioned Epstein...

@@S7Vmv Noooo nononono. That's not how this art works, as that is not what he does. Heavily influenced, yes, not stolen.
I usually just watch the clips, as soon as I saw it was Oliver stone, I immediately watch the whole podcast.

+1
Yup same
Thanks for having Oliver Stone on, he’s an incredibly interesting person. “Untold History of the US” & “JFK” are amazing.
I haven't had so many "I gotta go watch that now" moments in one Joe's podcast before but its always been a matter of time before another episode of his does this to me again
The FedEx driver didn’t kill himself.
And the killer of the Fed Ex guy didn't kill himself either...and so on, and so on.
And still no pictures or videos of Ghislane Maxwells arrest, booking , or jail transfer.....and still no tweet from the ole trumpster on his friends alleged arrest...🤔
Vince Foster did totally kill himself. No no I'm kidding, it's ridiculous...
@@mr.e3894 - Way more links to Epstein and Democrats & Hollywood than Trump. My favorite part of this interview was after 1 hour of delving into various conspiracies Stone blows the Epstein story off as, there is nothing really there.
Captain obvious over here with the big brain brigade.
I had no idea of Stone's background but its obvious when you put the pieces together. Old school Americana. Mr. Stone..you sir, are the man, the real deal.

Give it a couple hours they’ll be someone replying to you about what a piece of shit liberal he is. Not that that’s my opinion I just know society these days.
You can tell he's seen some dark shit but also studied alot. He's definitely got wisdom you can't deny that with Stone.

I have been contacted by the Atlanteans to make a disclosure website! Trust me I know this sounds crazy!
He seems like an older soul so to speak. Someone with a deep sense of conscience, ethics, and empathy. Someone that learns from his mistakes and has a sense of responsibility to others and society at large. These traits are pretty rare in Hollywood it seems.
I saw the guest and said “wow” out loud. We are officially at a new level.
Superofficialllllll
Shit got real today
Elon Musk, Robert Downy Jr, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Anthony Bourdain, Jay Leno, Mike Tyson, Mel Gibson, Bob Lazar, Edward Norton etc etc...

Thanks for this interview. It's so very important that people as brave as Oliver Stone are heard. This separarates you Joe Rogan from the rest.
You can tell Joe was holding in a thought that he wanted to get out so bad:
"Get that sucker close to your face"
Why you can hear him just fine . Some people know how to use a 🎤
He only says it to people he feels more famous towards.
Thinking the same thing! Lol
He almost has his mic in his mouth hoping Stone will subliminally mirror him. Oliver thinks - this guy really likes that mic close to his mouth....
@@Hieillua He says it to most people, he even said it to Elon Musk. You telling me he's feels he's more famous than Elon Musk?
Joe "I'm not gonna tell Oliver Stone to bring the mic closer" Rogan
My thoughts too!!
Poor Jeremy
To be fair, he still sounds great.
Thank you lol
Stone has a great speaking voice. If the movie making thing doesn’t work out, he could always do some calm audios to help one sleep.
Literally can't help but think how soothing this is to watch/listen to.

Joe needs to have him back for another one; that wasn’t nearly long enough. Joe, I hope you see this -> invite that dude back and let the clock run.

If Oliver can keep himself awake for the length of it all. I don't remember a guest yawning during any of the podcasts before. Maybe I'm wrong, but to yawn while talking about how Epstein was murdered in prison? Holy cow!
A A He’s clearly exhausted. Those publicity tours are exhausting.
The fact that he doesn't want to cover Epstein's story kind of scares me.
They're all involved. I have no doubts. Even the look on his face completely changed when Joe brought it up. He got nervous all of sudden

True say bro 👍
when you know you have rock star status you don't hear "Hey just keep that mic about a fist from your face-!"
That's all I could think about. lol
This..

Joe should just lower his.. That's literally what I kept thinking.
So damn annoying
mr. stone is a very deep thought minded individual. you could tell that he truly lived, and seen more than any of us watching this podcast. i used to always hear that "insert movie here" was directed by oliver stone, and i would immediately shun it because i didnt want to see these long, drawn out scripts that would only have a couple of good scenes. i now know "why" his movies are that way. i will have to go back and watch all of them again so i can truly understand what he was going for. this was an enjoyable podcast.

I'm sure it does. I mean, how do you "make" a bunch of civilians become soldiers and successfully win a war, when those people don't want to be there, and don't believe in what they're doing? Good luck with that...
