    Terri, you are so didactic! I'm already thinking about where I'm going to plant my cucumber and tomato seeds! I don't have land but I have a beautiful "patio" where I set up a couple of wooden boxes to cultivate and I already started with pumpkin squash. Thanks Terri, as always, is lovely to watch your videos! big hug from Argentina

    Really enjoying your videos, looking forward to growing more herbs etc in my garden. I have to say you have a very striking resemblance to Loreena Mckennitt the Irish/ Canadian singer/ musician.

    The older I get the more I'm surprised and to a degree despairing to see this skill loss - the younger people don't know of these simple skills - they have seemingly for many been lost in the fast pace of the world now or the time has not been taken to educate on these wonderful ways to help you grow your own trusted food from seed. I don't blame but I feel this loss needs to be addressed especially in the 'change' that is our world environmental change esp. Perhaps more of a skill set subject in schooling years...I both commend and thank you Terri you do go some way to address this glaring problem -- spreading the 'how to' word wonderful x

      Thanks so much Valli P, I totally agree re young people losing skill sets and I agree that life skills such as this should be taught in school. I don't despair though because I think that I was never taught to do anything like this, it all found me AND I do see quite a few members of the younger generation becoming curious about such things especially now we are in such strange circumstances. Blessings xx

      My sons went to an Educate Together school here in Galway city where they set up a lovely organic garden for the children. They used to bring them out to save seeds in the autumn.

    We need reminding of these simple skills. I harvest seed, swap seed and even steal seed. I really am going to have to make those sed bombs. Thank you Terri, it's empowering to get back to basics.

    Sometimes I use the cardboard toilet roll centres to store seeds. I flatten the bottom, fold it over and tape it, then pop the seeds in the top ( which is super easy because it is nice and round!) Then i flatten, roll and tape the top, writing the name on the side and hey presto!😂 (ive done this for some dried herbs, too)❤

    Well, I always just put my toms with the gloop and dried them out. I'll try this method as I'm sure there is less chance of mold when storing them. TY so much Terri . Blessings.

    When there fully dried, hvg then all nutrients?

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden

      I tend to pick them when they are dried although if they are not fully dried I allow the seed case to dry in the house and then remove the seeds or if they are Fennel or Dill, I put them in a paper bag and then when they are dry they drop inside the bag.

    Great video! I presume it is possible to harvest tomato seeds from shop bought organic tomatoes?

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  4 года назад +3

      If they are organic they should be good to harvest but unless you know that they are not an F1 hybrid, there will be no guarantee that they will be the same as the parent plant. Give it a try though and see.

    Thank you Terri, would this work with roses?

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  4 года назад +2

      Sorry Michelle, I know nothing about seed saving from roses. I usually just take a cutting and stick it in a pot or in the ground. As far as I know saving rose seed is best left to professional rose growers but I am not certain about that. Hope that helps.

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  4 года назад +2

      Blessings to you too Pamela. The kale I have is from seeds that I saved from a kale called "Uncle John's Kale". It always does brilliantly well and stands up to all kinds of weather, recovers from caterpillars and lasts for ages. I got the seeds from Irish Seed Savers.

    Can I ask you... we've been wondering for a while. Buying seeds, does it matter if you buy organic or non-organic? Not a modified one. But if grown organically does it matter if the seed itself is organic? Thanks

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  3 года назад +3

      That's a good question. Personally I prefer to buy organic seeds and save my own seeds. Yes if you grow organically the crop will be organic. I would be concerned about how much modification went into the parent plant and whether it has traits such as "terminator " is will not produce seeds for you to save. Non organic seeds are no cheaper here so I would just get the organic ones.

    • @airikem6879
      @airikem6879 3 года назад +1

      @@DanusIrishHerbGarden Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, it makes sense. But to go further, does it matter if it's an organic seed or heirloom seed? I'm a newby in the garden and I really enjoy your videos, so really appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  3 года назад +2

      @@airikem6879 Thank you Airike. The difference between organic and heritage as I understand is - organic seeds are ordinary contemporary seeds that have been produced from organic plants. A heritage seed is I believe, a seed that has been saved from a plant that would have been popular in times gone by but you wouldn't find in an ordinary seed catalogue today. The number of varieties we can access is hugely diminished in comparison to what was available about 50-100 years ago. For example if you want runner beans there might be one or two or three varieties that you can get from an ordinary seed catalogue or garden centre. Same with organic seed. For example you can get Autumn King carrots in both organic and non-organic form but you will rarely see Yellow Limburg carrots in an ordinary seed catalogue as they are heritage seeds. The heritage seeds offer you a bit more choice - something more authentic, it might taste slightly different because our taste buds have been trained by the adulteration of our food. Whatever you decide to begin sowing, you will be amazed at the difference in taste and there is such a thrill in eating something you grew yourself and harvested 5 mins before you wanted to eat it. Good luck with your gardening x
