One of my all time favorite films. The screenplay and dialogue is just off the charts. Lancaster and Curtis are in top form. And there is the amazing cinema work by the great artist James Wong Howe

My favorite line is when JJ and Sidney observe the drunk getting rousted from the club. After watching J.J. turns from the spectacle, the neon light illuminates his face, and with a sincere smile, he says
" IIII- LOVE THIS DURTEE TOWN"🤣🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️

Ernest Lehman personally told me he based his novel on "Walter Winchell" and his daughter.

It's usually Carney Tynes who posts these. Imagine my surprise.

Now if only Odets could have done a better job on the stilted dialogue in Clash by Night and The Big Knife. Fortunately, the performances rescued the former. The latter was unwatchable.

There's no murder, but every character is ethically bankrupt. Spiritually, they're all dead. That's what makes it noir. Sidney's secretary, Leo's wife, Sally and Steve are the only people whose souls aren't black.
