    What I enjoy a lot about White Lotus is that it doesn't play favorites with its characters. Even in Season One, it never tries to make it look like some people are morally superior to others. Just one of many examples: it is easy to side with hotel manager Armand against rich spoiled guest Shane as their conflict gets out of hand. It is easy to see Shane as a powerful narcissist pushing a working man around. Unless you remember that Armand did in fact screw Shane over, did not admit it and then needlessly escalated the conflict. Or how Cassie and Paula act like they have the moral highground to lecture Cassie's parents, like Albi does to his father in Season Two. Only for all three to out themselves as hypocrites with their actions later on.

    • @morningglory3644
      @morningglory3644 Год назад +13

      Cassie, Paula & Albie are reminders that we can all be hypocrites & we can all contradict ourselves. We will say one thing & completely contradict our words. I think it's human nature. We are all self-absorbed at times. Even the working class people, like Belinda & Portia can also be self-wallowing & self-pitying like Tanya. It doesn't matter if you have a lot of money or if you have to work hard for your money, it doesn't guarantee happiness.

      albie telling his dad he cant buy people in reference to him wanting to buy his mum a gift to apologize for cheating and then thinking he got played because him paying lucia's debt didnt get him the relationship he thought he deserved by "helping her" was gold. and i like that lucia picked on on albie's saviour complex and capitilized on it. Bored rich people suffer from a lack of imagination. If they hate being rich there is a solution for that. It is called charity. They could also fund small businesses. There are so many problems that could be solved with money if having too much of it genuinely makes you miserable.

    • @chellelaw667
      @chellelaw667 Год назад +7

      I personally think charity is a load of horse shit. Have you ever met anyone who personally benefited from charity? I haven’t. It’s just money that gets filtered into an organization that can’t be touched legally. I think if they are bored, they should get on a boat and help people after a hurricane. Pass the money out or write checks directly to the folks who truly need it.

      But that's not what this video is saying. When someone say "money is not happiness" people often misinterpret it as "don't make money" when it has nothing to do with it, it's just that MONEY by itself is not fulfilling if you just keep it for yourself and do nothing with it. Money should be used for finding meaning, help, share with your loved ones. Otherwhise it'll just leave you empty.

    Gotta say, while I appreciate the idea of gratitude and the power of perspective, modern stoic criticism always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It seems like their answer to tangible material social problems isn't to work with your friends, family, and neighbors to fix larger issues, but rather to passively sit back and say that any problem that can't be solved on an individual level is "out of our control." Sorry, no. People aren't rich because they just happen to be or because they have a moral disposition that breeds wealth. They're wealthy because of the historical exploitation of the poor and working class in our world, whether they participate in that exploitation directly or benefit due to circumstance is immaterial. Talk to the people around you. If you're all having the same system (or climate collapse) making you "unhappy," maybe it's not just something to reframe and accept. Maybe this world can change.

    • @sapereaude.
      @sapereaude. Год назад

      I don't think TRUE stoicism is about evading and denying the existence of much larger problems that are beyond "our control". Instead, in the most reductive and simplictic way, it is about being UNBOTHERED of those problems. It is about handling of EMOTIONS more than anything else. True stoics know that this world is only going to get worse but they know what they can and can't do about those. And it is all processed internally while presenting a facade of "indifference".
      Like for me, I LOVE to do a semi vindictive-reverse psychology everytime I would hear someone complain about prices and debts and politics and society. You made your bed, lie in it. You despise the status quo, yet you DEMONIZE the alternatives (i.e s0cial!sm). I offered a solution, you didn't want it. Why are the rich getting richer? Because they're smart and you're stupid.

    While I think parts of this philosophy are a good way to approach life, I don't think it is entirely true. If I had wealth, it would alleviate a great deal of stress from my life. No debt, no worries on having a place to live, of having a job that causes me anxiety, or having a working vehicle, or being able to take care of my family. These problems could easily come back if, like many people who are rich, my expenditures increase to match my new level of wealth, but I would hope that I have the maturity to wisely invest and have self-control (which I do possess a good amount of) to not blow my new-found fortune. I would inevitably make some unwise purchases (like a bitchin' gaming rig rather than a simply adequate one). Of course, I'm sure this is what many people have as their initial goal too and ultimately fail at that goal. I don't think the source of my happiness is dependent on wealth though, which I guess is more in the spirit of the philosophy presented.

      Yes, I agree with your comment. Chasing money is a slippery slope, however as you said there is the reality that we need money for life security. this might be the biggest impact of capitalism
    the pursuit of money, fame and influence is an endless never finished battle.
    and it falls a lot on education and guiding people to find what makes them happy and how to make it a reality.
    the affect that everyday big events, especially the more "evil" ones have on my life personally is huge. one the one hand i can see so many bad things happening around me that the idea of my control and impact goes down immediately.
    its scary to not have any control and see people get hurt without anything you can do, but on the other hand it also keeps you stuck and not doing anything at all. or always wondering if i do have ways to help but im choosing not to out of comfort or laziness. for me its a daily struggle, something to work on i guess.

    That must be the most shallow, privilleged and manipulative vid about that series, that is absolutely about wealth and power. Mixing two different things: immaturity&entilement (that can be met everywhere, in rich and poor) and reali life consequences of different financial circumstances is bs. Unhappiness of Tanya is caused by her immaturity and laziness. Thing that can be worked on. Unhappiness of Portia is caused by a long term trauma of poverty, constant fear of ending up hungry and homeless. Constant fighting for survival that makes her unable to feel anything else than fear. Her character demonstrates gen Z financial struggling, apparently not understood by older ppl. Probably the author or other privilleged comentators have no clue about that circumstances

    #1 Been a fan of this channel for years, very inspiring messages.
    My Point : Including the message 3 times from different quotes that traits that aim at telling us to be happy where we are in life / with what we have is to have a healthy mindset and to want more should be seen as negative.
    This to me feels like the show is meant to sedate everyone watching it from feeling like there's nothing wrong with the little bit of money you may be earning, that its your fault for not being happy, "because look! even rich people feel depressed and always want more"
    It makes me think of the shoe scene in the movie SNOWPIERCER. This feels like a show made from the people at the front of the train made for all the people in the very back, to be reminded of our "pre-ordained particular positions" being rich and having easy lives isnt as fun and simple as you might all think...

    I agree that trying to buy happieness is the wrong way. However, there is clear empiric evidence that to a point happiness is linked with wealth. So, since there can only be rich people when there are poor people, redistribution of wealth would be a solution for some of the problems.
    Nevertheless, and this is where we might agree, maybe happieness is the wrong goal or question here. Instead, it is a sense of purpose or fulfillment that eventually makes you content (and happy when your material needs are met)
