Southwest guy here. We are the only airline that I know of that doesn't get paid by the hour. We are paid by the distance of each leg, so it makes things a bit more complex when it comes to comparing to other airlines. The most accepted way is to multiply our pay by 1.149 to be comparable to our peers.
@CanerAcarbay I wouldn't say it's gets us any more benefits. It's just a different way that we are paid. The minimum credit for a 3 day trip is 19.5. I can fly 1 leg each day, and it pays that much. If you pick up a low block trip, it will pay that much, and you can go and pick up more trips with low block and get paid that minimum 19.5 credits for either in open time at 1.5x pay up to 3x pay depending on the company incentive put on it.
Hi Caner, thanks for this comprehensive video about pilot salaries. It is great that you included both the Captain and First Officer pay for a period of years as you grow with the company. The 401 K benefit and Profit sharing can add substantially to the pilots salary.
Would be interested to know how much extra credit you could realistically make through overtime etc. Overtime must be the reason for the story’s of senior captains earning $1million. Thanks for another brilliant video.
Hey James, thanks for the comment. Extra credit and overtime is a little bit different in the US. Overtime generally refers to flying extra than your normal schedule per month. On the other hand, In the US, senior captains make huge salary because of the premium pay. Without any overtime, s/he can fly all trips with 100% - 150% premium pay. Therefore, they can fly only 50 hours (well below European or Middle Eastern Company’s Overtime Threshold) and yet they can get paid 100-150 credits per month. You are right, premium pay + seniority is the story behind high earnings. That’s the one of another reasons why FO’s stay as an FO or narrow-body captains stay in narrow-body and don’t upgrade. To answer last question, you can only fly normal trips that are not paying premium with a very low seniority in the system. My record is 125 credit with 85 hours flying.

Hey Caner! I just found your channel one or two hours ago and been binging a lot of your videos, they're super informative and comprehensive, and you should definitely have more subs imo. Also, as I live in Germany, you mentioned in a comment that you went to a flight school in Germany, which one did you go to and would you recommend it? Also, you don't need to answer if it's too private, but I'd be interested in knowing how you financed your flight training, did you need to take on some debt or did you go through some kind of cadet program or used another way, because these days it seems super expensive to become a pilot, north of 100.000€? Again, thanks for the great videos!

Wonderful video! Your explanation is a light for those who are willing to be a pilot in the US 🙏🏻 But I’m curious how much tax do you have to pay as a pilot in the US. In my country, a pilot’s salary is partly tax free due to the structure of the salary (eg. Flying pay after 50 hr, perdiem, and overtime…etc., these are tax free.) I wonder how many percentage of your salary is taxable? Thank you again for your video 🙏🏻
Your full salary is taxable. Here is the question? How much is your take-home salary? After-tax, still US pilots earn the best salaries in the industry! YOu can calculate take-home salaries from below. salaryaftertax.com/us/salary-calculator
Why exactly do you think that these numbers are not accurate? As I mentioned in the video, there might be some discrepancies. These numbers are pretty much accurate!
I disagree with how you’re using the terms “hard” and “easy”. Pilot salaries being based on hours means they have to be ABLE to work extra hours. Working hard to does not necessarily equate more time. I work way harder than some of my peers but don’t use any overtime because I’m accomplishing so much in my 8 hours a day. Working more doesn’t inherently mean working harder
Hey thanks for the comment. You are right. I should have mentioned that in the video. However, your statement is true mostly for the USA pilots. In Europe or ME, working hard mostly refers to work more. Thanks for the feedback 🙏
I have never seen a pilot mentioning every single detail about this industry .. Man you're awesome!! 👏👏

Did you go to a traditional 4-year university to become a commercial airline pilot or did you take the shortcut?.
So, what is your advice to someone who wants to become an airline pilot ?
I had my Bachelor and then I became a pilot. If you can afford your own training be a pilot while studying an university degree.
What do you mean by 25th year captain? Does this mean you stayed at the airline for 25 years? Will it take 25 years to reach $400 an hour?
It will take 12 years t reach max pay scale. Therefore, 12th year captain and 25th year captain are getting paid the same hourly rate.
