On a similar note I would say something that helped me is planning ahead not just aimlessly opening synths and hoping for magic to come. I’ll use midi clips to try to come up with a foundational idea that I can visually see and then I try creating that idea. By trying to plan ahead whether it’s by closing your eyes and imagining the chord progression and ear candies or this way, if you have some sort of direction where you’re heading it really helps!
This is scary accurate. I typically start off a song with a drop idea, and most times when I do this, the song gets completed. (woohoo) Though I never thought of literally starting at the second drop, and working my way back. This is a fantastic video, thank you!
Thanks for the video. I have watched plenty of content, this is the first time it has been suggested to me like this. It helps looking at it from a different perspective. Liked and subscribed.
Zack, you are simply a great teacher - funny, always well-founded and to the point! And even though I've been producing using this approach (I call it Jigsaw-Method) for some time now - most of the time at least - I've still learnt something from your video and somehow you motivate me even though I'm not demotivated - a great skill! Thank you and keep up the good work 🙂
I agree, exactly the same. I do this by accident some times and it works amazingly.. Then next time I sit and start, kick, snare, hats, bass, melodic part.. Loop, boredom, try arrange then delete or start a new track.. 🤣 crazy when you here it out loud and now I'm conscious of my bad habbit. The part about the habit of being a music listener over producer helped it click for me.
Thank you for this! My coach keeps saying you have to be as creative with the things about music that you don't find amusing as you are creative with actually making music
this.... was so stupid.... but it makes ton of sense. ive had actually great ideas many times that died because i tried to figure how to make it sound more bigger... when it actually was on top already but i didnt realize it........ jeesus. i needed this video 🙆
In Greece many new songs have over +2,+3 True Peak. -8 LUFS are ok but for greek pop or greek laiko over -7LUFS integrated is awful. Also they use the templates of Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, hard centered bass and lack of dynamics, lack of high end.

for some, no doubt!! but there are many people without it that cant finish songs to save their lives!! Its other things (like explained) that get in the way of finishing. Bad habits!
this is the case for me, i’m about to go nuts with this issue. i'm super stoked to start projects, and I actually genuinely love most of the ideas I bring to the table, but after a while the project becomes so freaking boring and overwhelming, i almost put my laptop in the microwave oven. my executive functions are wrecked, so planning, organizing, time management, keeping on track and all that jazz are all error 101 - something went wrong. jkdakdwakodwakop, sorry just had to express my frustration. send help pls
@@HypeBeast764I think there is some truth in there. Many DJs will only play one drop per song before transitioning to the next, in most cases that’ll be the first drop. It’s not a per se or an absolute but it is a thing. As for listeners on streaming platforms (or DJs looking for songs to add to their set) they will often (quite impatiently) ‘scroll’ thru tracks to see if it speaks to them, if the first drop isn’t to their liking they’ll most likely just skip the rest and start playing the next song. And that’s the big difference between a movie and a song (allthough I still like TCA’s analogy to a huge degree). So I see the OP’s point. The first drop should essentially (also) be ‘the best one’ (or at least just as good as the second or last one) because in many scenarios the world won’t wait for the song to reach it’s climax to become ‘great’. It is kinda sad in a way but that is the impatient digital era we live in. I also tend to believe that usually when labels listen to ‘demos’ to see if there are songs with potential to be interesting for release they’ll also be ‘impatient’ and won’t have time to listen to full songs unless the first part of the song grabs them.
@@HypeBeast764 I'm speaking Dubstep DJs specifically, it may as well be intro, drop, breakdown/mix, rinse and repeat. You might get a double drop but, most likely won't. How often do you get to the 2nd drop of a Dubstep tune and say 'that was better than the first!"? Extremely rarely, hence why, it's generally just the first drop people care about. Finished your hissy fit now? Good
@@greedokenobi3855 oh no 100% even I don't always go for the first drop if it's not as pumping as the 2nd. These days people want the heaviest, most distorted, nonsensical drop possible. And it's stupid. But, that's how it be, I bet you that if we were to make tunes with this videos tips in mind, I almost guarantee you someone will say the 2nd drop should be the 1st, or the 1st isn't as good as the second, something like that. Been there, done that 😂 in fact a lot of my tunes have fair better 2nd drops than the first, and guess what? Absolutely nothing has come of it, people haven't even really commented or mentioned it, because most of them don't even get that far! It's stupid, I know, but that the way of the world at the moment unfortunately :/
@@XpiredUK Yup, people are very impatient and they’ll brutally skip to the next track if they’re not instantly caputured, especially in the world of dubstep/electronic genres.

Kinda true, anytime I make something im happy with and end up finishing i always come up with the ending of the song first or the hook
absolutelyyyyy!! 👊
Bruh this is a hell good video. I am a self-taught music producer and nobody ever showed me this. I'll definitely try this. Thanks a lot.

I can finish songs and my production skills are pretty decent. I need help with setting up for performance.
You’re the best Zack! I love this advice. Please tell Moose he’s a good boi. His bling is killer.
thanks! and moose has been feeling himself with that new chain! he runs shit at the dog park now
@@TheCosmicAcademy 😂 such a legend 👊
Well well well, does this apply to hiphop beats?
So Zack, you're saying make your drop, verse, chorus etc separately then arrange those elements into a song?
yeah ideally if you can write them and develop them simultaneously it helps! you're writing songs then, not ideas!
@@TheCosmicAcademy yea makes total sense. I am (was) the poster child to this video lol. Thanks a ton!
Just facts!
❤️👊 much appreciated!
Good points.. guess i‘m gonna finish some shit hahah
hahaha lets gooo!! 👊❤️
I tend to worry people will get bored before they get to the climax if I hold too much back
you dont have to hold back if the songwriting is good!
”Ultimate solution” 😅

sounds like you gotta watch the next video (at the end screen) then 😅

you're not wrong, but Dubstep loves being backwards, because people generally only care about the first drop. Same with the DJs
This isn’t true at all. What the hell are you even talking about? Do you even DJ?
