The Temptations Ball of Confusion Reaction 1970
    Reaction starts at 01:50
    1. Very political in nature regarding the lyrics
    2. Sounds like the brass liked it. Effective use of them but not over the top IMHO
    3. The bass really drives this song
    4. This genre "Phsycadelic Soul" is very sporadic and random but in a good way. I liked it.

You cheat yourself by refusing to hear longer songs. The Temptations recorded Papa Was A Rolling Stone, which was edited for the single release. The album version is 12 minutes long and worth hearing every second of! A stoned cold classic!
There are two extended versions of Papa Was A Rolling Stone. One is over 21 minutes and the other is around 44 minutes!
    Great music should continue on!

look, I'll be straight with you...when it comes to popular music I don't have the attention span for it. My personal opinion is that popular music is meant to be confined to a 3-5 min period of time. Of course there are exceptions but I'd put them few and far between. For popular music though I think a 3-5 min time period should be adequate time to showcase their genius and talent. The time limitation should force innovation in their music. Like in these reactions I'm listening analytically to pick apart and understand why the song is good or bad for the average listener wants to be hooked and told my the song is awesome.
If you're talking anything classical then the sky is the limit because as the listener I'm coming from a different angle. Listening to classical music there are sheer numbers of musicians and I can dissect each and every part to admire their genius. I know for a fact and recognize the decades of practice just to play that note perfectly. I'm actively listening. I'm not expecting the musician to grab me and prove to me that I should listen to them.

@@jaybrielakoi7747 I understand the attention span aspect. If you haven't listened "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" yet, maybe you can try listening in your car on a long drive. It was also co-written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, but it's not political like "Ball of Confusion," rather it's mostly sociological. Another incredible job by the Funk brothers, plus strings and horns. We had it on the jukebox where I worked, and the bass coming thru those big speakers sounded so good. BTW, I'd never seen your reviews before, but I loved your reaction to "Ball of Confusion:" so much that I subscribed to your channel
And coincidentally, during church last Sunday (we have a very small group and we meet at a local catering place), I stepped out to use the men's room, which had great acoustics. I thought I was alone, so I started to sing this song. Just after finishing one of Eddie Kendrick's really high lines, "BALL OF CONFUSIOOOONNNNNN..." I look over and saw a pair of shoes on some feet in a men's room stall. So I stopped singing, and walked back upstairs to church, laughing at myself. I wish I knew what the guy in the stall was thinking, but I bet it wasn't, "Man, that guy sounded just like the *real* Temptations." 😆😆😆

With all that was happening in the world at the time, Motown was often criticized for only releasing songs about love and romance. However, around 1969, things changed. This song, ":War" by Edwin Starr, both number ones, by the way, silenced the critics and signaled a shift in direction for Motown.

When I was in basic training for the army back in 2009, we had a village clearing that was run but a Vietnam vet, and I’ll never forget our drill sgts, who were all infantry guys who had done 2-3 tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, stopping us in the March to the village and saying “you better show this man some fucking respect when he speaks. He was in the jungle and he’s seen shit we haven’t even seen”

    • @havingfun1968
      @havingfun1968 3 года назад

@@joegibbskins I appreciate that immensely. The thing about Desert which I respect greatly, is you can still see most of the time the enemy coming. Yes, I understand IED's as well, but that's NOTHING knew. We had them all over Vietnam. Plus we had to fight in the pitch dark and in the deep jungles. You ever just walk through a jungle at night?? It scares the hell out of you no matter who you are. But add the Viet Cong are trying to kill you, land mines everywhere, and fire fights like you wouldn't believe, would go on for hours. I lost just 47 men there, who were under my command. I was shot myself in our last fire fight and I was getting ready to ship back to the land of the BIG PX, my final tour too, and the last fight got my ass. I was 4 days short, and then that battle, and I HONESTLY thought I was dead that night. We had so many men get killed, and that last fight, well, it lasted about eight hours. It got to the point where one of our flanks ran out of ammunition and fought hand to hand. But let me be honest with you, I'm fine mentally because I can put it all behind me and move forward. I'm NOT saying I can't talk about it because I can, and do, just so I don't forget it all. I personally believe Talking about it at times, will help my state of mind. But when I hear kids talking about PTSD and they've been in one tour, I shake my head thinking what would they be like if they were with us??? Our fighting was almost daily, not sporadically. I also think the media/social media tells you that you should have some form of PTSD today, as well as if you tell the world you can't handle it, they'll call you brave. The world is upside down at the moment. I just think it was part of my life, a HUGE part of it, but if you REALLY want to honor those who passed there with you, then you must live life to the fullest. I am alive and upright, and my dick works too. Hope you chuckled reading that. I wish you all the best my brother in arms, and stay out of the sandbox. All wars are different, and hard, but BE PROUD you served and never think it was as tough as you think. I may think we had it tough, but there are so many before me that had it way worse!! Others like those at Iwo Jima, who lost 5,000 men the first day. That's insane to think about. So no matter what I think I went through, I know the Marines at the Frozen Chosen, Tarawa, and you know all the others, had it tough as hell, WAY WORSE THAN ME! GET SOME... God bless you and if you are EVER in Vegas, dinner is on this old Captain.

One 11 minute song you'd change your mind about listening to is "Funkentelechy" by Parliament from the album "Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome." It is a funk masterpiece that never loses steam, never bores. From 1977, it showcases George Clinton as the crazy genius songwriter/ producer that he was. All driven by awesome bass by Bootsy Collins.

I got a lot of weird looks, but some of those cafeteria ladies appreciated my genius. 😂😂😂

  • @ragamuffin92

Hey, I was a white high school kid that summer, and I too was really inspired (and moved) by this song. I still love it, all these years later. It came out the summer before my senior year in high school, and in those days, all the kids would have their beach radios (no boomboxes yet) tuned to the same station, so when this song came on, we could walk from one end of the beach to the other and not miss a note. A lot of it is still relevant, except for "The Beatles' new record's a gas" and "The only safe place to live is an Indian reservation" and maybe one or two other 1970 references.
And fyi, the "psychedelic soul" aspects include that tripped-out distorted rising guitar riff during the intro, voices and instruments moving from left to right (Like one time, Melvin Franklin's bass line "And the band played on" is in the right speaker, next time, it's in the left), and "Great googa mooga" is psychedelic because it doesn't mean anything, haha.
