This is based on the phrase "A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss"
    - A rolling stone gathers no moss is an old proverb, first credited to Publilius Syrus, who in his Sententiae states, "People who are always moving, with no roots in one place or another, avoid responsibilities and cares."

You asked, "Papa was a rolling stone... what does that mean?" There is a saying that, "A rolling stone gathers no moss." Here it is referring to the fact that he just couldn't stay put long enough to settle down anywhere; kind of like saying he couldn't stay in one place long enough for the dust to settle. I saw that you looked it up, but that source didn't seem to mention the original saying that it was taken from.
It was great watching you rock out to the song, even if it didn't say much beyond the one chorus over and over. The funky sound of this one makes it worth listening to even if it is pretty simple in terms of lyrics.

I may be wrong but you didn't hear this kind of orchestration before this song was released and it is my belief that it heavily influenced R&B and led to the development of the sound of Philadelphia a year or two later. A masterpiece of the first order.

This was a Song that almost didn't get recorded. Dennis Edwards didn't' want to do it because his Father actually died on September 3rd. It was their Masterpiece and it was next to Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys and Hey Jude by The Beatles one of the very first Songs to go over 3 1/2 Minutes on Radio. Papa was a Pimp, A Bigamist, Drunk, Thief, Liar, had children outside of marriage. He's like a Frog who leaps from Pod To Pod. George Michael would later sample this Song for "Freedom/Papa Was A Rolling Stone"

The band behind the singers were the Funk Brothers. They were the Motown studio band and played on more #1 hits that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys combined. Check out the excellent documentary "Standing In The Shadow Of Motown" If you'd like to learn more about them.

Hey Twon my friend, In this song, they are clearly describing the kind of man his father was and the kind of life that he lived which is defining what it means when they say "Papa Was A Rolling Stone." No judgement, just a friendly suggestion, I know when it comes to a lot of new music today, you can easily get short-changed when it comes to good lyrics or the lack thereof. But when it comes to old school music, besides "bopping" your head to the beat, it is super important to pay close attention to the lyrics, because most of the time they're going to tell you the story!!!
