DESCRIPTION
The story of technology is one of convergence. It is ideas applied; forged from multiple disciplines, all coinciding at the right place and at the right time.
This video is an account of a tiny sliver of that story. Where a novel concept, born out of the explosion of discovery at the turn of the 20th century, would slowly gravitate towards a problem that lied a century away.

There is an audio cut at 5:10 but a quick lookup of that quote leads to that French mathematician being Henri Poincaré.
Thank you. Paused immediatly and looked in the comments. Knew there would be someone. There is allways someone.
Here king, you dropped this 👑
Why was there a cut in the first place?
Might've been an error in recording, who knows
... and there i thought it was a government intelligence cut designed to keep us ignorant.
Nice to see a face behind the voice. Still one of the best channels out here. I hope we see a blooper-reel video someday. ;)
So 40 minutes of botching a variety of mathematician names?
@@NewMind It's Leibniz not Liebniz :P
Yeah the ei in Leibnitz is pronounced like the i in "Night"
Pleasant surprise!
@@NewMind on WIkipedia you often have audio or IPA transcription (which can be also read with IPA readers) with proper pronuciation of person's name. Still requires practise and probably many tries but it's a good starting point. :)
No offense, but if I didn't know about Sierpiński's triangle myself I wouldn't be able to tell the man's name based on your pronunciation. Though it's understandable, pronunciation of words in language you don't know is always difficult, just wanted to inform you about that.
Watching the visualizations gave me flashbacks to the old windows media player graphics, no wonder old-school computer applications were obsessed with fractals since for most people that'd be their first time seeing them in motion.
Antenna design is a really complicated field, but this was a neat little probe into some of it.
Just one of the 1000's of pieces of math science engineering manufacturing and on and on, that makes a mobile device a "supernatural" object that fits in the palm of your hand. Just the GPS system, has atomic clocks in orbit, and uses the theory of relativity to calculate locations.
As always high quality video. Thanks New Mind.
correction it requires geometry to triangulate position. also time dilation. all needed is 2 satellites, and a fast calculation to compare the 2. more satellites the more accurate location
@@morkey74 The point was that just the gps part of it uses both special and general relativities to calculate position. The special to compensate for high velocity, and the general for lower gravity, relative to the ground.
This video is kind of an face reveal
I see that you present knowledge maybe in quite a challenging way for the masses, but I really appreciate the information density and even in the fields I feel knowledgeable about it's very interesting to see what light you put on them and how you present it.
Even if you sometimes might some get some things not 100% right, I find it impressive at what you achieve in your videos. I find them very beautiful, thank you! 🙏❤️
Love to see you experimenting with the format and reaching for really big ideas. You're one of my favorite creators on RUclips. Thank you for continuing to tell these stories.
"Fractal is a word invented by Mandelbrot to bring together under one heading a large class of objects that have [played] … an historical role … in the development of pure mathematics. A great revolution of ideas separates the classical mathematics of the 19th century from the modern mathematics of the 20th. Classical mathematics had its roots in the regular geometric structures of Euclid and the continuously evolving dynamics of Newton. Modern mathematics began with Cantor’s set theory and Peano’s space-filling curve. Historically, the revolution was forced by the discovery of mathematical structures that did not fit the patterns of Euclid and Newton. These new structures were regarded … as “pathological,” .… as a “gallery of monsters,” akin to the cubist paintings and atonal music that were upsetting established standards of taste in the arts at about the same time. The mathematicians who created the monsters regarded them as important in showing that the world of pure mathematics contains a richness of possibilities going far beyond the simple structures that they saw in Nature. Twentieth-century mathematics flowered in the belief that it had transcended completely the limitations imposed by its natural origins.
Now, as Mandelbrot points out, … Nature has played a joke on the mathematicians. The 19th-century mathematicians may not have been lacking in imagination, but Nature was not. The same pathological structures that the mathematicians invented to break loose from 19th-century naturalism turn out to be inherent in familiar objects all around us."

Uhm thank you....
This video makes me feel smart and dumb at the same time.
As an amateur radio operator.
Anything advancing antenna related technology i approve 👍
A coworker and physic dr. met Mandelbrot once. He's truely a clever mind on it's own but always described Mandelbrot as one of a kind. He could see formulas appearing our of images and could solve it in his head while talking to you. I'm really impressed and envy I never met him :)
Your videos are always top notch. Always a good subject and progression from basic to detail is well paced. I would suggest maybe watching Technology Connection's video about using a tele-prompter and their setup. your eye movements give it away that you're reading. Hope it helps you match your personal performance to the quality of your vids.
Yeah it bugged me too. It was my first go at it and I just wanted to bite the bullet and make it happen. I have a lot of work to get better at it though I’m looking forward to the challenge!
@@NewMind Dude, Bravo! You did really good in general. I would say the only times its above subtle is if you had a big word or many short words and advanced rapidly through the line of text or when you went to the next line. For a first go at it you did great, voice pitch and word intervals were smooth. maybe its just a subtle rig adjustment to solve 70% of your problem.
You definitely have one item in this video that is the revelation I needed to grasp fractal antennas power, the resonance of the similar triangles. Pointing out these different sections has given me the understanding of what is happening within the antenna design.
Sadly under watched and underrated. Keep up the good work mate.
Very Nice ! But this one is tough to Title
Thanks! And yeah it’s a tough one. I gave up on being descriptive after 2 days of mulling over a title.
Nice to see your face, but when you stand so close we can see your eyes reading text, darting left to right.
Autocue too close (I learnt that from Technology Connections' video on autocue) :)
Amazing quality. Thanks again for the great video.
*The fiber optic cable that goes to the control center where the pilots that fly those drones used to go through the woods in the back yard of the house I used to live in. I was digging up bamboo plants when I found it. Verizon handles the hardware. Not sure where the line goes but I suspect the line goes to a local server that goes to the pentagon, but thats not where the pilots are. Looks like they went through quite some trouble to keep it out of the way. We had a natural disaster that washed away part of it and the news reported that it was compromised so I followed it from where the flood was and it led back to the cable I found. It was just like any other cable they would use for fios but in a spot that you would never use to service houses or businesses. Dont ask me where it is, I dont want a knock on my door*
That's probably not something you should tell everyone.
9:46 I'm surprised that animation was possible in '75. I heard it took a full day to render and print out the original set in ASCII when it was first discovered.
It wasn't possible. Even the print was very low resolution
Awesome! A video about aircrafts, RF technology, antennas, and math. I couldn't ask for more!
Thank you for your content. It is highly informative, and your time consuming deep research for every single video is mostly appreciated and respected.
I noticed you used some fractal flames animations, particularly at 17:17. Can you tell us where you got that from? Such animations are somewhat rare due to the processing time they take to render.
I am the author of one program which renders fractal flames, named Fractorium. Others are Apophysis, JWildfire and Chaotica.
Another interesting field we consumers don’t always get to appreciate. Very interesting and great job! Good to see you in front of the camera.
Wildly underrated channel.
Good video as always, but just as a tip for future videos:
You usually pronounce German names, exactly as they are written; there are barely any silent letters, that aren't "h".
And btw. the letter combinations 'ch' [in Russian: х] and 'sch' [in Russian: ш] create unintuitively different sounds.
A few pedants in the comments that don't understand how boring perfection can be. The few minor "errors" are where the personal touch shines. Keep em coming mate, this Tasmanian enjoys the great content 👍
Nice to see you in the video. Great content as always.
Really nice episode, and nice to finally have a face to go with the voice :D
Oh, and I was wondering why RUclips recommended me this. Now having watched the video, I watched a lot of videos where people would make a short film of zooming into the Mandelbrodt equation. That’s prob where RUclips got it.
There is beauty in fractals and in mathematics, check out non-linear fractals!
This video is fantastically made
Amazing, as always.
Man I love your videos! Can't wait for the next one.
Very, very interesting. Thank you for all the work and then sharing.
Would it be possible to do a video on either Feigenbaum's Constant or the Fine Structure Constant?
Your content is top notch and I think either video from you would be amazing to see.
The way you break down complex topics is superb. Thank you!
as good as always , please consider making another such video how calculus is there in there in engineering , everyday consumer products and in our lives
Very cool video; I would recommend investing in a teleprompter if youre going to continue live segments, or look into constructing one yourself for cheap
There is a sound problem around 5:12, at the exact moment you say the name of the French mathematician.
Well his name is [REDACTED].
5:11 Now THAT'S how you jumpscare
The Face behind the Mind! Nice to see you mate! Do you do all the work for the channel, btw?
I have some help, but yes it’s primarily a one man operation.
You are really good at what you do
It is nice to see a face to the voice, but there is always a way for improving. Try to tweak your settings for the telepromter or try to read the text without looking directly at each character. Less eyemovement is better for the immersiveness. Other than that it is really top notch content, love your work :)
The idea, to add yourself, is perfect. Makes movies much more pro-like. Less "slow". if you will practice, and eye movement from close shoots, will not be visible, it will be at TV level! :)
9:47 Mandel-brah. Definitely calling calling him that from now on.
A challenge as science gets more complex and detailed is bringing the technological expertise together to made advanced products. That is where the military have the edge.
Watching this stoned is really trippy
Woah, hello, dude. Nice to see you.
Great video! One suggestion on the new face cam: Keep your teleprompter text smaller (or just farther away) to reduce the noticeable movement of your eyes as you read. In addition, the closer it is to being in line with the camera the better! Love the channel.
ah yes, my favourite french mathematician, *_modem screech_*
French Mathematician name is missing at ~5:18.
finally a face for this voice. Great content as usual.
Either Julia or Fatou
Henri Poincaré
Who was Weirstrass' rival? A few I guess..
5:11 whats wrong w the mic?
One of the RUclips channels ever
Great to see the man behind these great vids, cool subject.
The use of a different background each time will be a challenge, but it's really cool and breaks the routine.
Thank you :)
One of my favourite real-world implications of fractal geometry is how most coastlines are fractal-like in nature, leading to different countries having wildly different measurements for the length of the very same coastline based on what level of granularity they used when measuring
You had me at Northrop Grumman
Lovely sentiment at the end. Just unfortunate that the previous 10 mins just showed how this will definately be used against mankind.
Your videos are excellent
This is beyond my intellectual capability
Great video
criminally underrated
can I get that "water drops on a leaf" on a 2-hours loop in 4K ?
0:13 lol "double data encryption" it's like when VPNs etc are advertised with "military-grade encryption"
Cool as! thanks for the video
Would you be so kind as to share the title or link to the cool electronic music in this video // EDM sorta bit cliff digital sounding // sounds great & reminds me of the enlightenment giving rise to the Information Age & content in your video & the means by which I accessed & shared it on Twitter // Thank you!
is the audio glitch at 5:12 intetional?
Nah, i think that's his name.
@@thesral96 xD maybe it's a coded message using some kind of fractal encoding?
wat a weird name for french matmetician. wouldn't be able to pronounce that! 5:10
Point without T =Poin
Carré = care+a
Poin- care-A
Or...
▪️
A square dot...
Thats his name.
Fractal antenna design exceptional for many reasons & enabling amazing innovation to 5G & beyond!
What is the name of that piano song? I used to know the name, but forgot and want to enjoy again.
'Everywhere continuous, but nowhere differentiable' is a surprise even now to mathematicians. Remember this and mention it to a mathematician that you know. Just say 'there are functions that are ...' They might be surprised. I mentioned it to a Math PhD in one of the best universities in Australia (ANU) and it was a surprise to him! An old result, but little known.
4:41
great video.
Yt ads and in film ads love it
Now I understand the multiband EMP antenna of the Matrix that fired the EMP destroying thousands of Sentinels at once.
Fascinating
Awesome
Wonderous!
Video starts at 1:11
Thank you, your service is of high value
Thanks.
Just starting this video but you better mention Heddi Lamar and Mandlebrot.
christmas present - came in early
You should post videos on curiosity stream or nebula, these videos totally belong there
this was heavy
Is this the first time your face revealing?! Good looking dude. Thanks for your work on these videos bud
Oh snap! New Mind is handsome AND smart! Fantastic video as always
5:13 Who was the famous mathematician?
5:10 is this sensorship!?
We are, as is every aspect of existence, one fractal in an infinitely recursive system. It's no wonder everywhere you look you see self-similarity. It's all a scalar representation of that existence.
And here's an additional thought. All of it is reflecting, like facets on a diamond, the brilliance eternally emitting from an existential source.

True size of coastline would be only fully accurate if it could be measured down to planck lenght scale
Put the long commercial at the end. Not the begining.
It is a bit too obvious that you have a teleprompter under your camera. Technology Connections has a video on them incase you want to switch it up in the future.
Yes that would be very helpful for him
Mandelbaum, Mandelbaum, Mandelbaum.
Deep
1:15
Cool
5:12 where is the audio
CENSORED !!!
Be sure to check out the work of Ben Weiss, who has dedicated his life to extending the concepts of Benoit Mandelbrot.

Why was Mandlbrot's name scrubbed from the audio at about 5:20?
Maybe this just our limited view of the 4th dimension? *blinks sideways*
