As the arrow of time pushes us forward, each day the universe inches closer to maximum entropy. And when that does happen, the lights just might turn back on, and for all we know, we might just end up back at square one.

I have a strong physics background and a deep and abiding interest in physics. I have a BS in math and so I’m not shy about the math aspects of physics. I have a good understanding of entropy and how change in entropy is calculated. I understand the statistical aspects of it. And I’m almost always disappointed in explanations that claim to explain entropy at a “layperson” level. BUT: this exposition is brilliant, especially because of the beginning. The simplistic “it’s a measure of disorder” does a poor job of explaining why entropy increases and what it means at the level of thermodynamics. Congratulations on an exceptionally clear and simple (in its best sense) explanation.

Did you not find the conclusion: "but the lights might just randomly all come back on" at the end a bit disingenuous? Seems like a false move just to end the video on a positive note. the man has to sell merch after all, and bummed out people don't buy merch...

    • @TIO540S1
      @TIO540S1 2 года назад +7

@@ckminty603 No, way before I saw this video, decades ago in fact, this was my thinking. In a universe that has reached maximum entropy, there is, effectively, an infinite amount of time for unlikely things to happen. "In an infinite universe, anything that can happen will happen, an infinite number of times in an infinite number of places." Of course, there are wild cards. Do protons decay? Do black holes really eliminate information? Is dark energy real? These and other possibilities may throw a wrench into the works with respect to a vast sea of particles all at the same temperature spontaneously rearranging themselves into a low entropy state. If the ultimate fate of the universe is, in fact, a sea of particles all at the same energy, then it's inevitable that they will rearrange themselves into a low entropy state. But, so far as I know, that is not what is now considered to be the end state of the universe so, probably, the lights won't come back on.

@@TIO540S1 Tom Campbell says we are individuated units of consciousness, existing in an entropy reduction trainer simulation. Like a flight simulator; we are here to learn to make decisions that result in overall lowering entropy in the universe. We face challenges, and the sooner we consistently make good decisions; the challenges will become less difficult and less frequent. And vice versa. And that love is the lowest entropy state. So we should always base every decision with the intention of love. I for one can say that it's a very tall order.

There might be a marvellous symmetry between the universe’s birth (Planck’s age) and its death (Kelvin’s), filled with spellbinding mathematical harmony. Various Quantum Thermodynamics model, based on second law’s purely statistical nature, predict the nonzero possibility of a new universe arising from fluctuations or “random” phenomena over a very vast amount of time, if thermodynamic equilibrium is not achieved. But in either case, I still love the parallel between the initial singularity, when time “was not”, and the final state, when time “means not”.

it's only a difficult concept because your whole society and life is built around lying to you about this incontrovertible law and not looking at it. the idea and law itself is quite simple and you observe examples of it constantly each day. If you live in a hot environment it's why you can't just turn on your ac once and cool down the room, you have to keep cooling it. vice versa with heat in a cold environment. everything dissipates. all our projects really are doomed by the laws of the universe, although it could take a long time or a short time depending on what we think we are striving for...

I just recently stumbled upon your channel and have only seen a few videos on philosophical matters(about hedonism etc.). I really love how you put those sometimes complicatet matters in understandable terms(not really the correct way to phrase it). Your calm voice and explaining by comparing and putting them in relation to understandable examples really helps to get the idea behind certain topics. And this video was the biggest "revelation" to me. I knew about maximum entropy and what it means, but saw it as some sort of ultimate goal of this universe.
Even though i know why most rules, by which we define the universe, are theories because it could be possible that there are places/events which would invalidate those, it never came to my mind that this could also be the case for the "end of the universe".
It's funny how bad at thinking "outside the box" we are, until someone opens this box.

This is a Long long shot but hear me out on this. So if everything was order before the big bang and it will be order again so.... Maybe the universe is in an endless loop, when it's perfectly orded it will take a long long long time and then well something happens, big bang. a particle spontaneously becomes disordered and it causes a domino effect and well big bang, everything is back in disorder. So what I'm trying to say is that the universe is infinitely years old, in an constant loop/fight to become perfect, to equal eachother out but when it does the disorder causes for example the big bang and well a 'new' universe, new planets, new stars, new galaxies, maybe even new life. This could've been happened millions of times and always the same result, or maybe this is the first time but how it came to be? I have no idea xD

Good thought process! I think either it happens repeadedly through out space and time thus creating the multiverse, or just a universe that in an constant loop infinitely since (energy can neither be created nor destroyed)
Summary: either we live in a multiverse, or a universe which given a unthinkable amout of years would eventually repeat itself and cause the "big bang"

There's a video that shows the entire future of the universe based on current theories. I forgot who by, but it's like 30 minutes long and you're essentially right. Every single star dies, protons decay, and black holes roam the universe destroying everything. Including other black holes. Then suddenly, one massive singularity and another big bang.

order is the state of the universe when it started,
disorder is what the universe tends to reach towards as time goes on,
order is less probable and disorder is more probable because there are so many more ways for something to be disordered and there is only 1 way for something to be in order, therefore the universe slowly reaches toward disorder, not due to it being a law, but due to probability, this probability of going to disorder is called entropy, entropy cant be reversed due to it being very probable but its not a guarantee for it to work every time since its based on probability, for e.g. a cold cup doesn't become hot all of a sudden, even though there is nothing preventing it from doing so, this is because, entropy causes things to go to disorder, things to fall apart through diffusion,
but since we know entropy is just probability and not a law, it can be wrong sometimes because probability is all about knowing what might happen, not knowing what will happen, so it is possible for a cold cup to start boiling out of nowhere, its just exponentially improbable.
    correct me if im wrong....lol

It seems to me that certain topics in physics are interrelated more specifically entropy, the arrow of time into the *future,* quantum mechanics (the uncertainty principle) and cosmology since everything came from an infinitesimal point of infinite density. And when you merge all these concepts together, it seems to me that the multiverse concept emerges.

  • @damnboi972

Iam always confused with the concept of entropy, and I have my own definition which can be wrong but it fits in most of the places. Entropy is the ability of a system reaching toward its stability according to its surrounding. I don't know but it makes more sense to me than just the usual definition which is " measure of randomness ".

also the fact that there is a non-zero chance that i could run at my bedroom wall and all my atoms would miss all the wall's atoms, therefore causing me to phase through the wall.
there's probably not enough time in the entire existence of humanity and earth itself throughout the universe to let it happen, but it _can_ happen. that's the magic of this concept. and i love it.

How to survive the Heat Death of The Universe: A Guide by Me.
Step 1: Be alive at the time of the Degenerate Era
    Step 2: No more stars
Step 3: Find a large enough Gas Giant
Step 4: Throw mass at it so that it starts fusing
Step 5: Brown Dwarf (T-type star, failed star)
Step 6: Throw more mass at it until it becomes an actual star (Like Jupiter if it gets enough mass from a Red Giant Sun)
Step 7: Rinse and Repeat with others
Step 8: Never Stop, Automate If Possible
Step 9: Watch a tutorial on How To Build a Galaxy
    Step 10: Follow the steps
Step 11: Force a galaxy into existence
Step 12: You're probably dead by the end of step 11, so someone else will continue. Repeat steps 3-6 and 11.
Step 13: If you're lucky, planets get caught in orbit around a few stars, if luckier, they're in the Sweet Spot AKA Habitable Zone. Colonize them.
Step 14: Your stars die. Some violently, in a few billion years.
Step 15: Since your stars are dead, they shed their outer layers and you've got tons of gas now. It makes more stars
Step 16: The larger stars might just become Neutron Stars, exploit it.
Step 17: With enough time, the Universe isn't dead, you're kind of a God now. (Either in a way that you made everything or people worship you for stopping the Heat Death)
Step 18: Read this comment in the Xth year 2022 since things love to repeat, and your old empire has long died.
    Step 19: ???
    Step 20: Profit.

"The heat death of the universe is still a theory."
Don't say that. Nothing can ever be greater than a theory. It does not mean guess, it does not mean idea, it is a working model that best describes the observations. Saying that it's "still a theory" diminishes the word and lets people foolishly say things like "But it's only a theory. It isn't proven true" which is nonsense to say. Seriously, don't do that. Be more conscious of the words you use and their effect on people trying to understand things.

Excellent way of phrasing the lifecycle of the universe, if the universe does not die in a big crunch but by the heat death where maximum entropy is achieved over an impossible finite space, given infinite time, eventually all components will return to their initial state at the big bang and the processes continues.
issues with finite space for the universe in the stated theory as light would have to wrap back around? We say space exists as far as the CME has traveled and that is only known for our section of the universe, but what lies beyond that we will never know for certain. Maybe the light wavefunction is stretched out to the length of the universe thus existing everywhere and no where while all remaining particles are still bound by gravity to the universe, perhaps dark energy is just a vehicle on this entropic journey to ensure maximum entropy is reached?
