I Was Doing My Normal 4.0 Engine Refresh, But This Engine Fought Back!

- Rather than stacking this core up with all my other Engines, I decided to just stop what I was doing and turn this back into a good engine. It went pretty well but the oil pressure was not to my liking at all. But taking this negative to my advantage, I will use this engine to answer the age old question of where the oil pressure is actually going!! Thank you!!
Nice job Dex.We are still waiting for part 2 of the 5.0L build..😁😁😁😁
I knowww. I haven’t touched it since the last video 😔
And part 2 of this one! I think if you’d agree to a low budget stroker build you could talk me into secretly pulling the 4.0 outta my wife’s ’06 LJ & shipping it down from WI, but it’d have to be back before springtime so she could drive it 😎
@@dexjscmon Man we are waiting patiently work on it and upload it for an early Christmas present for all of us
Eff that stroker. We want wheeling videos!
I betcha there are thousands of jeeps with cracked engines that are running just fine and you wouldn’t know until you took them apart
You gotta do the Off-road Games with Matt's Offroad Recovery, if you're not already signed up! I REALLY hope to see this channel out there! You guys will kill!!!!
the balance and lack of vibration as well as the 7 mains makes these one of the longest lasting engines ive ever owned or ever worked on. in fact honda crv and these jeeps have never come in to the shop with a bad engine. never replaced one . a few head gaskets and clutches but they are as reliable as the imports best engines. the slant 6 was another of chryslers million mile engines that were indestructible and smooth as silk. not a ton of power but reliable as they come
Check your cam bearings ,if your gona use a used oil pump take it apart and clean it and especially clean bypass valve ive seen debris cause it to stick causing low oil pressure. Love your videos man
..I'll watch you do the same thing over and over. Good content.
It's like watching Bob Ross paint
I'd love to see a video of converting a California emissions 2001 to a federal emissions 2000 wiring harness and PCM process.
my 4.0 is in the exact same condition as this one. Cleaned the sludge off rockers as much as i could without taking anything apart. Still runs good without a deep clean like you did, but cant wait to see what the oil pump does to the oil pressure issue. Great content!
I wished you lived in Australia mate, have 20 plus years on jeeps and been a mechanic for 30 years now.
Your job or hobby is what I have dream of
Really enjoy your videos,,
Thank you and your brother Very much for all your efforts 👍.
I just went through this with a 4.0 out of an 01 cherokee. It had no oil pressure at idle and was overheated. Sure enough the head was cracked bad enough that the coolant getting in the oil wiped out the main and rod bearings. I wanted to do what i thought would be quick and easy(turned out to be a waist of time) and put a brand new head on it, spun in new rod and main bearings(crank journals still looked brand new) and finally a melling high volume pump. Well sure enough when i started it, it only had about 5 oil pressure at idle when warm. I had to take the whole damn thing apart again, this time i pulled the cam out suspecting that the cam bearings were wiped and sure enough they were. Pressed in new cam bearings, put it all back together and now have 35-40 oil psi at idle hot. I have a feeling that the engine your working on someone rolled in new rod and main bearings hoping for the best but didnt work. Id check the cam bearings, ill never make that mistake again.
A 4.0 that needed a rebuild. That don't happen often, those things are bulletproof.
Dex check your cam bearings. I had one that was doing the same thing, and when it got hot pressure came down to 2 pounds going down the road. Can't find out the camp. Bearings were completely wiped out and the Babbitt was actually coming out and going into the Pan. Check your cam bearings. I have heard that several level have done it so I would check that too
cam bearings suck. At least it's not in a jeep yet. Can pull the cam with out removing the head using a wooden dowel to hold up the lifters.
How long do your motors last with good maintaince
Long videos are awesome !! No complaints here
I hope to see your channel grow to the point where you can live well and do cool stuff
How cool is it when you need a head, you got one already rebuilt. You need a motor, and there is one ready to install. Envious setup. 👍👍👍
get to the bottom of it! 👍 pick up lots of little things on your videos on the 4.0. trying to figure out misfire on cyl. 6 on my '99 XJ. driving me crazy!
Will do. Coming soon!!
Another great video! Always something to learn on here
I flippin love dex dude🤣, I like when his videos are more educational. I’m a truck driver, no means a mechanic lol
Rural King Hardware does not package oil, just like Wal Mart doesn’t. They contract with larger packagers who do, and given their volume of sales, can save the consumer money. The oil meets the same specifications as the major name brands, and can “possibly” be the same oil. Good information to know!!
I definitely enjoy the longer videos especially when your actually teaching people
I'm so glad! I get nervous over 30 minutes.
May not matter in your engine, but when i changed my head and head gasket, i found that 40% of my pushrods were partially clogged! I soaked and cleaned then with mig welding wire!
Love the video, and this is my first, I think. I know I've seen and liked your short videos. I had to subscribe after watching the video on your name debacle. Ya, I know that is a video, but not really. Now, this is a video you are doing what you love. Looking forward to the next one.
On my AMC 360 I use a thinner oil pump gasket and it raised the oil pressure slightly.
Great video! As always!
You may hate long videos but I love long videos.
I have had the best luck lifting the 4.0 L using the second head stud from the back and the second head stud from the front, but I suppose it might depend on what configuration is used as far as the lifting chain is concerned, I just use a good quality plain length of chain along with some grade 8 washers and nuts,,
You need change cam bearings it sets the oile pressure... Your fan from libya north africa
Thanks for sharing .
I like watching your engine rebuild videos or your work videos.lol
How many laughs and head scratches do you get when you show Justin’s minnow trap used to hold small parts in the big parts washer? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
I love it! Stuff like that these guys do because…if it works, well why not. Did something similar in my ultrasonic cleaner after seeing theirs. Thanks Dex & Justin👍🏼
Oil pump video, YES PLEASE!
Love to learn more about these 4.0's! thanks
' my boss said ' :) ditto man
Atta boy...yup, that oil is going nowhere!!
Good video, can’t wait to see the turbo build
Please do a follow up on dailying that cracked head
Dex, say “wash” however you want to, don’t worry about the haters
Haters gonna hate 🤷♀️
Love your videos🤗 I don’t know much, but I’m learning more and more, bet I could even get in there and see if I actually spun a bearing like I think I did! Maybe.
Curious, how often do you see shift solenoids act up on a 96 xj?
Good ol Magnaflux
I swear u the only one I’d trust with my Jeep if I could drop off my Cherokee I’m going to buy and have u rebuild if I would lol love ur channel screw Jeep for making u change ur name
I use a hose clamp as ring compressor😅
I say warsh too. WV born and raised.
Had a TN buddy relocate to CA in his 20s. His CA friends would buy all the free beer 🍺 he could drink.....just to hear him talk with that TN accent. Not a bad deal. 😂😂😂
KEEP SAYING WARSH IT MAKES MY DAY ❤ Don’t listen to the haters
A little coolant that seeps into the oil will sludge up the engine... Use some block seal
Love it
Addicted to your channel bro. Still want to work for you lol
No homo
Same
I'd like to learn all that machine shop stuff with Justin, too. Hell, we could just show up as a "youtube film crew." That way, Dex and Justin can just do work. Let's go! Lol
...long live the XJ
Excellent videos 100%
Have you ever used a product called ceramic seal? Worked well for me!
Cam bearings
Love it keep the videos coming !!
Thank you! Will do!
Smaller exhaust ports were made to lower the exhaust temperature
It was to increase the velocity thru the pre-cats to get them up to temp faster. So kinda opposite. Also hurts performance a little, since these heads barely breath right to begin with.
ive been driving a ford 4.9 six for 10 years with 3psi to 5psi hot idle oil pressure . maybe 20psi on highway. no noises runs fine,
Where do you get all your motor parts from because I'd like to do a rebuild on mine but I don't know who has the best budget friendly parts
Do you rebuild motors to sell? If so, have you ever built a stroker?
Can you do a video of your toolboxes
Jeez it’s so pretty where you live
Quaker State Motor oil will sludge up like that..
I’m from Minnesota and I say warsh. I get shit for it
Whens a turbo build coming ?
i like it!
Delta cams
What pistons do you recommend mate?
Controversial statement. But if you're changing your oil every 5k. It doesn't make a shit what you use.
W.rsh...this mofo didn't have a couch as a kid, his family had a Davenport
whats the ballpark $ on this kinda refresh motor?
What are the chances I drive down to you from Ohio and y’all install a rebuilt 4.0 for me?
I have a 4.0 with these exact symptoms you are trying to diagnose. Very interested in what you find. I've been driving the Jeep for 2 years now with no oil pressure @ idle when hot. Would be great to get it fixed!
I’ve got the answers coming soon!!
13 lbs of oil is fine lol ha my 91 has like 5 lbs at idle….lol😢
Will a wj engine fit in a zj don’t know the year of the wj but my jz is a 1998
Forgot to add there both 4.0 jeeps
9:26. You said your “boss” was that a joke?
Aren't you the boss LMAO?
Haha it’s just me.
early for once
