I Was Doing My Normal 4.0 Engine Refresh, But This Engine Fought Back!

  • Rather than stacking this core up with all my other Engines, I decided to just stop what I was doing and turn this back into a good engine. It went pretty well but the oil pressure was not to my liking at all. But taking this negative to my advantage, I will use this engine to answer the age old question of where the oil pressure is actually going!! Thank you!!

And part 2 of this one! I think if you’d agree to a low budget stroker build you could talk me into secretly pulling the 4.0 outta my wife’s ’06 LJ & shipping it down from WI, but it’d have to be back before springtime so she could drive it 😎

the balance and lack of vibration as well as the 7 mains makes these one of the longest lasting engines ive ever owned or ever worked on. in fact honda crv and these jeeps have never come in to the shop with a bad engine. never replaced one . a few head gaskets and clutches but they are as reliable as the imports best engines. the slant 6 was another of chryslers million mile engines that were indestructible and smooth as silk. not a ton of power but reliable as they come

Check your cam bearings ,if your gona use a used oil pump take it apart and clean it and especially clean bypass valve ive seen debris cause it to stick causing low oil pressure. Love your videos man

my 4.0 is in the exact same condition as this one. Cleaned the sludge off rockers as much as i could without taking anything apart. Still runs good without a deep clean like you did, but cant wait to see what the oil pump does to the oil pressure issue. Great content!

I just went through this with a 4.0 out of an 01 cherokee. It had no oil pressure at idle and was overheated. Sure enough the head was cracked bad enough that the coolant getting in the oil wiped out the main and rod bearings. I wanted to do what i thought would be quick and easy(turned out to be a waist of time) and put a brand new head on it, spun in new rod and main bearings(crank journals still looked brand new) and finally a melling high volume pump. Well sure enough when i started it, it only had about 5 oil pressure at idle when warm. I had to take the whole damn thing apart again, this time i pulled the cam out suspecting that the cam bearings were wiped and sure enough they were. Pressed in new cam bearings, put it all back together and now have 35-40 oil psi at idle hot. I have a feeling that the engine your working on someone rolled in new rod and main bearings hoping for the best but didnt work. Id check the cam bearings, ill never make that mistake again.

Dex check your cam bearings. I had one that was doing the same thing, and when it got hot pressure came down to 2 pounds going down the road. Can't find out the camp. Bearings were completely wiped out and the Babbitt was actually coming out and going into the Pan. Check your cam bearings. I have heard that several level have done it so I would check that too

cam bearings suck. At least it's not in a jeep yet. Can pull the cam with out removing the head using a wooden dowel to hold up the lifters.

Rural King Hardware does not package oil, just like Wal Mart doesn’t. They contract with larger packagers who do, and given their volume of sales, can save the consumer money. The oil meets the same specifications as the major name brands, and can “possibly” be the same oil. Good information to know!!

I have had the best luck lifting the 4.0 L using the second head stud from the back and the second head stud from the front, but I suppose it might depend on what configuration is used as far as the lifting chain is concerned, I just use a good quality plain length of chain along with some grade 8 washers and nuts,,

It was to increase the velocity thru the pre-cats to get them up to temp faster. So kinda opposite. Also hurts performance a little, since these heads barely breath right to begin with.
