That's awesome man! I got my 1994 25th Anniversary Trans-Am LT1 w/6-speed in 1996 while I was still in high school. My second was a 2002 Firehawk Trans-Am LS1 w/6-speed and I love it. Just like you I refuse to give either of them up.
I reluctantly sold my 2000 Camaro SS and 6 months later bought a 2002 WS6 Trans Am. Just love 4th Gens. I have a bad urge to own an SS again and keep the WS6 too!
Gotta love the Firehawks. I have a 97 formula WS6, which I like more than the later 4th gens. An LT1 with bolt on mods is a beast. 4th gear chirps are easily done.
It's really sad that Ford didn't put out a Mustang GT that matched this until 2011. I say that as someone who has always had Mustangs. Ford REALLY fucked this whole thing up, but didn't care because the Mustang outsold both the Camaro and Firebird combined. What a world.
+pontiacGXPfan That's not necessarily true. Despite all of the tree huggers yapping about such things as fuel economy, hybrids/electrics, visions of autonomous cars, carless cities and bullet trains, today is still a much better time to be a muscle/pony car fan than back in the late 1990s and early 2000s. These types of cars were a dying breed back in 2001 as the segment was being squeezed out by Asian sport compacts and big SUVs and pickup trucks. Today, we have Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers that'll blow the doors off these old F-Bodies. Since then, the tables have turned, and American muscle is back in the spotlight. Today's pony cars are better in every conceivable way. Despite all of that, I can still relate, and would still love to own a 1998-2002 Trans Am WS6 one day myself. Those were my dream cars back when I was in high school, and I hated GM for a long time after they axed the Camaro and Firebird.
+Black Sunshine Well one thing going for Late 90s Camaros and Firebirds is there price... they're pretty cheap and they happen to have one of the greatest V8 platfroms ever conceived. Too you can swap in just about any LSX engine you could find in the GM parts catalogue. They can make awesome canvases for imaginative gear heads.
jeadelmann90 No doubt. If I had 8-10k laying around right now then I'd be seriously looking for one. A 1998-2002 Trans Am WS6 would look pretty good sitting next to my 2006 Mustang GT.
Black Sunshine Yep! Although I'd be careful about buying inexpensive Fbodies... people beat the shit out of the cheap ones... But the LS series are fantastic engines and there's such an aftermarket for performance upgrades it's unbelievable.
Let's settle the Firehawk vs. SS dispute here - In 2001 both cars had a BASE hp rating of 325. There was an OPTIONAL exhaust package for both cars which raised it to 335. In 2002 both cars still had a BASE rating of 325. The optional exhaust still gave 335. But for ONE YEAR ONLY there was an ADDITIONAL cold air intake option which with the exhaust made 345. Neither car out-performed the other. Same rating if optioned the same. You'll just hear guys with the intake or exhaust kits down talking other guys claiming the Pontiacs are slower or the other way around. So the fact that they say that the Hawk has 10 more hp than the SS here, it's because of the high flow exhaust. What's strange is that in the video the Pontiac has an EGR passage on the front of the intake manifold which was removed for 2001. Only '98's - '00's have that front EGR tubing . . . . . . . . .
I have the $345 horsepower option from SLP which was just an air cleaner lid from SLP that's supposedly gave 10 more horsepower with the 10 horsepower on the exhaust either center or dual dual
@@marcusevangeliste7426 yep. My point exactly. I'm an owner of a 345 center exhaust SS car. These cars are equal performers if they were optioned the same.

The track they tested on is 75and80 in MD. I sued to go there, notice its uphill and not flat also the track tarmac was not good at all. The track you could say was slow. So the numbers they observed are conservative. They miles per hour should be a better indicator of what you could get at a better track and HP.

Wait did he say this car has a standard 5 speed manual transmission? I think that is a mistake cause all manual fbody's come with a 6 speed so I highly doubt that slp swapped out the 6 speed for a 5 speed. It makes no sense so that has to be a mistake!!!
My 1999 Trans am ran 6 speed ran 12.88 @110 dead stock back in 2003 when I bought it. Gears, air lid and cat back it went 12.23@114. Still have hit....although it's way faster now....
Midnight81ta-- true, but engines in the past HAD to produce that amount of hp, BECAUSE OF THEIR WEIGHT! most 2nd, 3rd gen cars were made of steel making them weight 3.5k pounds, when most cars of today weigh around 2.5-3k
the problem is they only ran these once... these things run low 13s stock. they are not far behind from the current Camaros... so either GM is making boats with V8s currently, or the LS1 is just a better motor as far as the powerband goes even with less ponies from the factory.
John Nelson DEFINITELY boats. The 5th gens are PIGS it's atrocious. I was able to go 13.6 @ 102 in my 98 Z/28 6 speed 100% stock (literally the weakest LS1 ever made) at sea level... My first day at the track. No offense to 5th gen owners, but a lot of them that opt for the 6 speed can't drive and they are in the 14s... Awful. The auto ones are obviously more consistent, but for their power they are disappointing to me. The 5.0 S197 Mustangs wipe the street and track with 5th gen Slowmaros. They are just simply too heavy.
+Marcus Mar really are 5th gen was quick. We always had 3 people in it and we always seemed to beat corvettes, zl1s, and mustangs. We had 485 to the wheels
realgraff16 Yes they definitely can. These cars are the most significantly underestimated, under rated and over looked F-bodys Ever produced. These things are awesome! With my Non SLP 2000 SS T56 6-speed I ran 13.1@107 with 80k odo with the original and tired clutch. My Buddy had a stock 2001 A4 Trans Am and managed 13.2@106 and he's less than a good driver. I have posted videos of both cars runnin the aforementioned times. LS1 F-Bodys keep pace with '13 5.0 and '13 SS Camaros. That's the truth
This is a disgrace to F bodies everywhere. Not a 2001 because it's not the ls6 intake. The 5 speed misnomer, the launch they showed was atrocious. If your best time is 13.5 at 108 you need to go back and try again because that is indicative of a low low 13 sec pass with that mph. Also if you take the same exact fucking car and do a completely different time and 1 mph off trap speed you know they can't drive for shit
Firehawks were severely underrated, as the WS6 was... GM couldnt have a car that could beat the Corvette of same year that costs 1/3 less or even more of a monetary difference... Remember the 1992? yeah way back then...The Stock SLP non aspirated Firehawks bought right out of dealers show room, Ran 0 to 60 in 4.6 sec with no mods and had a 1/4 of 13 flat or below... Even this vid has the 2001 0 to 60 at 5.4 when we all know from watching them at the track they are closer to 5.0 to 60 and 13.4's on 1/4 bone stock WS6's not even the Firehawk's upgrade
I like the bird better but looks like the only difference if it was accurate footage was the driver blew the tires off of the Camaro more so than the bird.
First time I've heard someone else refer to these as pony cars. One time I said that to my wife, she looked at me like i was crazy. Apparently in her mind only Mustangs are pony's.
***** Lol You have to know that was my attempt at being 'funny'. I was in a goofy mood that day when I made that comment. I wouldn't even consider my car a rice burner because I think of those as little modded civics and what not that would beat my car. Mine is just a plain little sedan that gets 39 mpg. I love these F bodies. God bless
The FIREBIRD is FASTER than the comparably-equipped CAMARO because PONTIAC was smart enough to place it's hood scoop CLOSER to the FRONT of the car...where MORE AIR FLOW is available ...while the chevy's HOOD SCOOP was FURTHER BACK. With the SAME ENGINE and TRANSMISSION , The FIREBIRD hit 5.1 0-60 & a 13.5 quarter mile @ 108 MPH, VS. the Camaro SS' time of 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and quarter-mile time of 13.8 seconds @ 107 MPH . All road tests of the two at the time placed the FIREBIRD faster than the CAMARO .
William2552 the "ram air hood" on the camaro is not functional, the air intakes on both cars are placed at the front under the hoods exact same place. I love the look of both and at least the trans am has somewhat of a real "ram air hood".....Its got function but not in the sense as the 93-97 trans am and camaro had. For the camaro the 97 SS was the last year for those to have a full function ram air hood. I want the SS hood for my 97 z28 66spd
williamg2552 There's no way in hell a LS1 ss Camaro runs 13.8 in the 1/4. I read in 5.0 mustang and superfords magazine that the 2002 Camaro ran a 13.0 flat compared to the 03 cobra's 12.8. As far as normal ws6 firebirds I have seen bone stock birds run 13.3s to 13.6s at the track I go to on 35 degree cold nights. I raced a stock ss Camaro with exhaust and he ran a 13.1 next to me.
Man you guys are mean. Yes your 390 hp advertised charger is the shit, but you have to understand a 2002 camaro z28 all-motor which means you can take the engine out and turn back the coilers and rods to perform under higher revs and hp ,+ adding a turbo and supercharger = holy shit 900 hp I know a kid who gots a old 1991 pontiac trans am ,he all motor'd it and its 400 hp and hit all the way to 600 tq on the dyno scale so your hemi's are shit compared to stock cars, not street.
I had an '02 Trans Am Firehawk and all I had was a power programmer on it and I was consistently running 12.87 @ 111 all day

The track they tested on is 75and80 in MD. I sued to go there, notice its uphill and not flat also the track tarmac was not good at all. The track you could say was slow. So the numbers they observed are conservative. They miles per hour should be a better indicator of what you could get at a better track and HP.
My 2001 corvette Z06 ran a 12.8 @118 mph NO COMPARISON
The 92 firehawk was faster to 60 and in the quarter mile.
Ive owned both cars. Fun to drive
My 2001 Z28 with an automatic goes 13.5 seconds...and that was my first time out to the drag strip.
The 95 lt1 fire Hawks were rated at 315 hp. The ls1 has to have closer to 350-360
Stk.,Non SLP FIREHAWKS,Believe Were 325 h.p. on the LS1's, Slightly Below the WS6's 345,in 2001 & 02.?I Was Interested in the 97 HURST LINGENNELTER FIREBIRD LTD. PROD.OF 50,That U Had to Go Thru LINGENNELTER to Order it,Till I Found Out it was $42,000 Grand.Ported Heads,Stiffer Valve Springs,Borla Exhaust,& Beefed Up Brakes ,Which A Good Speed Shop Could do For U,A Lot Cheaper, That Believe Was the LT 1 MTR.
You can see the shift pattern on the console (6 speed)...
Ive had both. 4 the$$ nothin beats these vars. Fast fast fast . Will still beat most cars today and there 20 yrs old.
I have to make a appointment with my hearing test as my left eardrum just failed.
jw, is the firehawk considered a collectors car?? or is it just some model that was fancy at the time but not valued as much now
i run a 95 formula and to be honest, i wasted too much money with bolt ons and ported heads. scrapped that set up and am currently installing a 6.0 vortec from a 2500hd. she will then be a true beast.
He said "a 5 speed." Lol
Joe dirt ! Joe Dirt ! JOE DIRT! I want this car or a mustang Cobra 🐍! I’m saving up for one I just sold my 1998 Mustang GT
Fire hawks have had 6-speeds from 91-02
Naw 6speed was offered in the fbody in 1993 only 93 to.02 .
2001 had the LS6 intake the SS camaro in this video didn't
you are correct, that means the SS would be down at least 10hp
wes patton like i said, the cars pictured weren't the actual cars driven...in 2001 the LS1 lost the bigger cam, but gained a better intake manifold..no mention of the cam's being smaller ; 98-2000 202/210..496/496..vs 2001-2002 ; 197/207..467/479..116lsa for both..best deal around is to get the 2000 and replace the intake with the LS6 ...motor week cannot drag race a car to save there lives.
Sorry I didn't read all the comments I just commented after I watched the video.
wes patton that is what i have done so many times..lolol..it's all good :)
The firehawk had the auburn high torqe differential.
These cars are worth every penny sip or not
Wait did he say this car has a standard 5 speed manual transmission? I think that is a mistake cause all manual fbody's come with a 6 speed so I highly doubt that slp swapped out the 6 speed for a 5 speed. It makes no sense so that has to be a mistake!!!
steve v it is a 6 speed. When he is talking about it you can see the diagram above the stick showing where the gear positions are.
going 13s stock is harsh but I went 13.8 @100.2 in my 94 m6 z. hypertech only and weak launch. Dino what happened here but the maro seemed flat.
on a side node this is why audio is more important than video quality
Did he say a 5 speed
Yes, I caught that too lol
The pinnacle of the F-body Chevy vs. Pontiac. Long live PBS!
My 1999 Trans am ran 6 speed ran 12.88 @110 dead stock back in 2003 when I bought it. Gears, air lid and cat back it went 12.23@114. Still have hit....although it's way faster now....
The SS is NOT a high 13 sec car either
It’s the same almost a 12 sec car and both cars will go 12s on sticky tires
Midnight81ta-- true, but engines in the past HAD to produce that amount of hp, BECAUSE OF THEIR WEIGHT! most 2nd, 3rd gen cars were made of steel making them weight 3.5k pounds, when most cars of today weigh around 2.5-3k
older cars weighed less, the 4th gen 4 bodys weight 3550ish and new camaros chargers mustangs challengers weigh 3600-4100
I’m pretty sure those had a six speed stick, not a five speed.
Best soundtrack EVAR!
That FireHawk is a sexy beast!
I want that firehawk wing 😩😭
I'd rather have the 3800V6, don't need the V8
13.5 @ 108? spin city lolz
Said the same thing Marc .
the problem is they only ran these once... these things run low 13s stock. they are not far behind from the current Camaros... so either GM is making boats with V8s currently, or the LS1 is just a better motor as far as the powerband goes even with less ponies from the factory.
How do you know they only ran them once?
13.8 at 108 in the SS good grief man
no ls1 f-bodies had egrs after 2000
If this is an 01 why does it have an egr valve? 1:35
realgraff16 Yes they definitely can.
You ss is a slp lol all SS for 96 to.02 where slp cars as where the firehawks
5 speed transmission?
I thought they had 6 speeds?
They were 6 speed.
can these trans ams take the beating of burnouts?
Did he say 4 speed?
adam yup lol, he messed up
Getting my 2002 this summer :D
The best F-Body award from me .
pontiac all day every day
13.8 second quarter mile for the SS? I own a 2000 SS, and I'm going to have to call bullshit.
Yeah really poor car needed a driver mod. That's a 13.0 car all day but that's how they were with these reviews
i was wondering if others noticed that too
5.5 seconds?...... I got mine to do 4.8 on street tires and a bad clutch. Now that i have an LS7 clutch i spin third :)
Lmao he said 5 speed lol
i wish they wouldve put a normal trans am spoiler on it. so much better!
A 5spd , ok?
I never see Camaro ss fbody on the road
Glad to say mine is still on the road. I even have some videos of mine on my channel too
5 speed manual?? lol 6 speed
I like the bird better but looks like the only difference if it was accurate footage was the driver blew the tires off of the Camaro more so than the bird.
They were 6 speed not 5. The t56
Wow, the 1997 SS camaro with the lt4 was faster than these two ls1 ponys.
First time I've heard someone else refer to these as pony cars. One time I said that to my wife, she looked at me like i was crazy. Apparently in her mind only Mustangs are pony's.
why in the HELL! would pontiac discontinue the firebird!
Insanity
My 2006 Nissan sentra with a 1.8L four banger would SMOKE this thing.
All road tests of the two at the time placed the FIREBIRD faster than the CAMARO .
the firebird had the ls6 intake and the camaro had the old ls1 intake. that is enough to make the difference.
BANANAHAMMER420 my 2000 ss had the hood with the air that went into the scoop and down in front and into the normal lid area
Handsome B Wonderful really?? Not aftermarket but stock?? Hell that's cool I thought 97 was it on ram air for Camaros.
williamg2552 There's no way in hell a LS1 ss Camaro runs 13.8 in the 1/4. I raced a stock ss Camaro with exhaust and he ran a 13.1 next to me.
love the slp tips
Thay need two do a Raman of the 70 as 396 chevelle
Guys, he was trolling us by saying 5 speed! We all know 6th gear is completely USELESS in these cars ;)
Nice car. L9ve my 1995
5 speed transmission? lol wrong. 6 was standard.
its worth ah little more , but its really just a graphics package maybe a few more horses
and the SLP SS has 345HP
anyone else agree that the camaro sounds way better stock then the firebird?
Please fix the audio
Man you guys are mean. Yes your 390 hp advertised charger is the shit, but you have to understand a 2002 camaro z28 all-motor which means you can take the engine out and turn back the coilers and rods to perform under higher revs and hp ,+ adding a turbo and supercharger = holy shit 900 hp
I know a kid who gots a old 1991 pontiac trans am ,he all motor'd it and its 400 hp and hit all the way to 600 tq on the dyno scale so your hemi's are shit compared to stock cars, not street.
These are 13.0 cars or even very high 12s
Gorgeous!
WOW AWESOME
