When I was a teenager back in the early 80s, I went through serious depression and the Honeymooners saved my life. Every night I would watch Ralph, Alice and Norton on a little TV next to my bed at night, and the laughter was enough to get me through the next day. I owe my life to that show, and to this day, if I ever feel sad, all i have to do is think of one of the shows. Thank you Honeymooners!
jabo22 glad you wrote this. i don't think people realize how important this stuff is. bill murray said that a guy came up to him on the street and thanked him for helping him get through cancer, because of his carl the greenskeeper character from caddy shack. personally, beavis and butthead helped me get through some tough times back in the 90's. hats off to these brilliant guys.
They sell the shows on DVD . I have some on vhs. I get lost watching them . What a great show. They could not have pick better actors , to play the parts . Bang zoom , to the moon Alice. LOL.
@@lenorewolke8812 I don't have any interest in tv anymore. Unless it's the old shows. I even miss Dobie Gillis , Patty Duke. But the Honeymooners is my favorite.
@Alan Lowe I would definitely suggest you watch the great nostalgic tv stations like METV(which happens to air The Honeymooners), Antenna Tv, Get Tv etc. Much better programming than networks have today no contest!
I have NO idea--------why, after all these many years, I still laugh at these 2 . They truly were comedy gold. I still fall off my chair waiting for Art to adress the ball, so funny and timeless. Two of the best ever in their prime, preserved forever for us adoring fans. Goodbye ball!
A little personal bragging here. My step-mother's brother was Andrew Russo who was a writer for radio and TV with the penname A.J. Russell. He was head writer on the Honeymooners and won an Emmy for this episode. "Hello, Ball" is a classic line in our family.
I liked it when Norton described how he wanted to have a son, send him to college and then when his son graduated, he would like to work in the sewers together.
Nice. You know, I've got a lot of respect for the comedy writers of that era. They were so restricted as to what they could and couldn't do, and so many subjects were off-limits. So much of what passes for comedy today is lowest common denominator bedroom/bathroom/frat comedy.
Folks, I'm 68. I watched these episodes live as they were broadcast from NYC. The whole family gathered around the small black/white TV and laughed our asses off. I still do today. As does my daughter and nephews and sister. All time great comedy.
I'm 62 and from Scotland and I've been in love with The Honeymooners since I first saw them back in the Summer of 1987 living and working in Upstate NY . And yes they would be deemed unconventional in today's broadcasting ...but God ,they were funneeee .Bang ...Zoom ! Shheesss! The golden age of television ! Best wishes .

I've seen every episode at least 100 times. Comedy is so timeless that it's just as funny today, as then. I grew up in Bensonhurst, oh boy what memories. Life was so much simpler then. My dad took me to Ebbet's, I remember after the game, if you sat on one side of the field and your subway stop was on the opposite side, you didn't walk all the way around the ball park, you were allowed to go onto the field and cut across, no one minded. Much simpler, and much nicer then, wasn't it?
One of the many things that made Gleason great was his ability to "hollar." His voice was perfect. I think Jason Alexander's "George" character reflected this too.
As a fanatic Honeymooners fan for literally 60 yrs, I love your comment. It don't take a lot of words to shine! You truly understand the wonderful humor of that show. Brilliantly simple! Good on you.
Although Ralph Kramden was a klutz trying to learn golf Jackie Gleason was actually a serious amateur golfer. In 1960s he moved production of his variety show from NYC to Miami so he could play golf all year round. ☺
The year was 1955 to 56 when the 39 great and lasting Honeymooner episodes were broadcast. Those bits of television history have provided several generations with grand humor. But you and I were there from the beginning. Ah, Brooklyn in the 50's. Nice memories huh? PeeWee Reese, Snider, Hodges. A Chicago W.Sox fan, I still recall those Brooklyn greats. Love the Christmas episode when Ralph hocks his bowling ball, remember?
Honeymooners was regular family Christmas viewing until the old folks passed. Had several on VHS but every year for sure "Hello Ball". It was the essence of the Norton/Kramden. relationship. Greatness never leaves you '
2022 and my kid hears me (address) the ball.....Dad what's that from? Tear formed, knees shook 😢 I put my club down and familiarize the young jedi.....lmao I had a whole generation laughing and sharing with friends.....Absolutely live for these moments!
It's amazing that Jackie and the other cast members can enter the stage in front of an audience in ridiculous clothes and not react to the crowd reacting to them.
Sometimes they had to pause or repeat their lines to be heard over the roar of the audience. They were so at ease they could often ad lib like here where Norton forgets to hand the pin cushion to Ralph and Gleason brings him back in line.
You, sir, are as much a part of history as these shows themselves. Without the kinds of memories you have, let alone your willingness to share them, it'd be a lot harder to get what these shows were all about. You're a great man, despite what some trashtalkers may say on here.
My husband was trying to teach me how to play golf. He was really good, he started with the proper swing. He then handed me the club and said, okay, let’s see whatcha got, so I looked down and said, hello ball !!! We were cracking up ……. Good times and great memories …….. 😘
Funniest golf "schtick" I've ever seen. By the way, I've watched everyone of Jackie's shows and was always entertained and looked forward to the next. He truly was the master of comedy.
People don't realize it (because there were 39 episodes) but the Honeymooners only ran for ONE season! But back then it was on EVERY week for 9 months of the year (unlike the 24 episode seasons of the 80s and 90s and the 10 episode seasons of today) for a 39 episode season. Gleason declined to continue the show (and passed up the $7 million left on his contract) because he loved the show to much to keep going with sub-par ideas...and he felt they were running out of fresh material quickly. Amazing story.

That one station must be WPIX Channel 11 up here in New York City. Every New Year's Eve and for a good percentage of New Years Day they show the Classic 39. They should've shown the movie too.
