    Hi. Does the pot have to have a drainage hole for the humdity to reach the plants via the roots? or can it be a closed pot? Thank you

    • @RT1home
      @RT1home  3 года назад +11

      Hello! The plant pot does not need a drainage hole as the humidity is created in the tray with rocks outside of the pot. But it is better in general to use pots with drainage holes. Also as a bonus, when you water the plant - the water drains out the bottom which also refills your humidity tray water at the same time :) Hope that helps! 💚

      Bird of paradise are beautiful. But if planted outside, they attract ants.

    Love your video. Thank you! How often do you add water to the tray?

    • @RT1home
      @RT1home  2 месяца назад

      Thank you for the kind words! Water frequency really varies depending on your environment. In my home, I probably add water about once a week or so. But you just need to keep an eye on the water levels. If the temperature is warmer or more dry, you will need to add water more often. Hope this helps!

    Thank you for the video! Is there something I can add to the water in the tray that will keep it from getting scummy? Vinegar, maybe? Mine looks stagnant. I used distilled water.

    • @RT1home
      @RT1home  2 месяца назад +2

      Hello! That's a great question. Personally, I have never added anything to the water. But I would recommend cleaning the tray and rocks with soap and water periodically, as well as replacing with fresh water to prevent mold, etc from building up. I will add this to the "further steps" in the blog post - thank you!

    I was recomended to use moss tough, do you have any experience with moss humidity trays?

    • @RT1home
      @RT1home  Год назад +1

      Thanks so much for watching! I have not heard of moss humidity trays as I would be concerned about mold if it is in standing water...but you can add moss or coco coir to the top of the soil in your plant pot to also help hold in humidity. I have another video that will be out soon with other humidity tips (without using a humidifier).

    Enjoyed your presentation, helpful. However I’m swapping growing medium in African Violets, not sure if I can use Perlite and Spagnum Moss, or do Ineed to add etc.

    • @RT1home
      @RT1home  Год назад +1

      Hello! What is the growing medium currently? I’m not an expert on African Violets, but I’ve heard they prefer well draining soil so you could use perlite or spagnum moss and sand. I would add some nutrients to the mix with worm castings or compost as well.

    Why don’t you recommend plastic humidity trays?

    • @RT1home
      @RT1home  3 года назад +5

      We just don't recommend using plastic in general since it is not a sustainable material. If you are upcycling or re-using existing plastic trays you already have, that works too.

    • @RT1home
      @RT1home  Год назад +2

      @kaitlyn michelle The packaging for the pebbles we sell are in Kraft bags which are recyclable. As far as buying pebbles / rocks in general, we can't control packaging materials for other companies, we just try to buy less plastic in general.

    Did anyone MEASURE the effect?? Once I tried with several trays in one room. My humidity meter did not show any improvement even after being placed directly against one of the plants over 2 days. No impact on room humidity or local humidity.

    • @RT1home
      @RT1home  2 года назад +4

      Hello! There have been a few studies on this and typically each humidity tray will only increase the humidity slightly for the plant directly over the tray, not the room. If you are needing a drastic increase in humidity in your space, I highly recommend using a humidifier.
