Are you, or someone you know, thinking about starting a family now or in the near future? Typically, the focus on reproductive health falls on the woman, and it begins after conception has already occurred, with minimal emphasis on diet and nutrition beyond prenatal vitamins.
However, the pre-conception window is a foundational time for both partners to take charge of their hormonal, metabolic, and overall health to ensure the healthiest sperm and egg possible for a healthy pregnancy and, most importantly, a healthy baby.
In today's episode, we're discussing the essential steps both men and women can take to foster a nurturing environment for conception. We'll delve into lab tests and tools to support hormone and reproductive wellness, the challenges and insults of our modern-day lifestyles, and how we can use Functional Medicine to take a proactive approach by embracing diet, supplements, and exercise to prime couples for a successful pregnancy while safeguarding against developmental conditions like autism and ADHD that are doubling, or even tripling from one generation to the next.
Whether you're just starting to think about having kids or already on your pregnancy path, this conversation is for you.
    In this episode I discuss:
The importance of the preconception window (3:15)(5:05)
How epigenetics impact the preconception window (3:58)(6:01)
How parent’s diet and lifestyle imprint their children’s epigenome (5:03)(6:59)
Limitations of Conventional Medicine during the preconception window (9:30)(11:26)
The Functional Medicine approach to preparing to conceive (12:12)
Breakdown of essential nutrients and biomarkers to ensure a healthy pregnancy (15:27)
Sex hormone and bonus lab tests (21:00)
Optimizing blood sugar and cardiometabolic health before and during pregnancy (22:40)
Foods to eat and foods to avoid while gearing up for pregnancy (23:44)
Eat your foods in the correct order (protein and fat first, then carbs (36:28)
Tips for reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (38:14)
The power of exercise, stress, and sleep for a healthy pregnancy (47:24)
Supplement recommendations for men and women for the preconception window (51:35)

I so agree!! I was not healthy having my 4th child, I had poor nutrition and high work stress. I was 6 weeks when I felt “there’s something wrong”, this feeling never left me, even though the doctors and nurses all said I was fussing, all scans were fine. Michael Andrew was born at full term and I was being sent home but I still insisted he had something wrong, 5 nurses refused to call the doctor as they thought I was overreacting, I even said he seemed to be turning dusky, eventually a nurse got the doctor, on listening to Michael’s chest he ran to the emergency ward, hours later I discovered he was going to die from hypo-plastic left heart syndrome (congenital but not genetic). He was rushed from cork hospital (in Ireland) to Crumlin children’s hospital that night by ambulance after they stabilised him with prostaglandin, but the writing was on the wall. They did several tests in crumlin, and it was a mechanical mal-formation of his left ventricular which was way too small. The left side of the heart is not used in-vitro as it is for the lungs etc. I always felt that nutrition was the problem, always. No-one listens to this! Fortunately two years later I had a perfect little girl, Alex, but let me tell you… I ate like a king that pregnancy!!! ❤😂🎉 thank you for these great videos!

Mark, what a treasure you are!! Thank you for sharing, in your speedy, articulate way, these simple/complex concepts that have the power to turn around big problems facing humanity. Although I tried hard to incorporate the best available nutrition info when in my childbearing years, what we didn’t understand came home to roost in our lives, and made things not just hard, but heartbreaking (infertility, miscarriages, then other problems related to childbirth). Over the years you have promoted functional medicine, I have applied wisdom from your efforts and at 62 have lost over 100lbs (and kept it off for over 10 years), eliminated fibromyalgia, wear a size 2 or 4 and enjoy a flat belly, working out, walking, feeling attractive (missed out on from early childhood thru early menopause, being short and overweight), greatly improved brain and mood function and a happier marriage. My grandchildren are unfortunate fruit of “too little too late”, with much needed pre-pregnancy, and during pregnancy, steps neglected -causing the oldest, 3.5 year old, to have non-verbal autism. How can we reach women in time, and with greater influence than big food, and addiction?

Your info is so important! I know you from Canyon Ranch when I visited in the 90’s - long, long ago. Met you briefly; as a doctor, I was so interested in the reduction of suffering and improvement of health. Never learned about epigenetics, one course in nutrition and no study of metabolism in medical school. Good to connect again

I have been doing Reiki on myself for a year and focusing on my body releasing the weight and fixing my mindset around food. Your videos popped up in feed of videos to watch. I was not subscribed and started watching all of your videos. I then of course subbed because I understand and like what you are teaching. I had not been to the doctor for awhile and went in and got my blood work done. I had a knee injury for nearly a year and could barely walk and gained a bunch of weight. I barely eat and eat pretty good but as an ex plant based eater I just couldn't lose the weight when I added in meat. My blood glucose was 120. I was having neuropathy in my feet and knees were really weak. Could barely walk in the mornings until I took inflamex and R alpha lopeic acide. I had to do something and your videos came in time. I also am an avid Goodwill shopper and had purchased a book a year ago called Eat Fat Get Thin. It's been on my shelf for a year. I just finished a 6 day water only fast. I broke my fast yesterday. Today I thought " I want to take that book Eat Fat Get Thin" to work today and start reading it. I grabbed it off the shelf and looked at the author. I smiled to myself and said "of course it is" I had no clue that I had your book this last year. Starting tomorrow I will go shopping and buy all the foods and get my kitchen in order. I'm pretty much there as I eat a clean diet just too many carbs like fruit and sweet potato and afraid of fat. I've never been a big meat eater either so that is something I will need to amp up. I just want to say thank you for all your hard work. I truly appreciate you. I know you touch many lives.

I have read your summary and am concerned. The weight gain and bs of ,120 AND neuropathy spells type 2 diabetes. Did your doc discuss this with you,? You can reverse this with low carb diet, moderate exercise ( if neuropathy is resolved). You can do this, but you should go back to get your blood sugar rechecked to follow your progress. Or get your own glucometer. Good luck.

Hi again. I assumed that the blood sugar of 120 was a fasting blood sugar

Complete elimination diet (carnivore) ought to resolve much, if not all of your health problems. Best of health to you!
