  • Welcome to our new shop! We closed in the carport of our home to turn into our shop, so are thrilled to have this AT HOME! We put up walls, doors, and a window and it all turned out so amazing. There are still a few loose ends, like electrical, we need to complete before we starting moving things over, but this is it!!

    question or two...:
    Are you not required to have the 'damp proof paper' between the wood and concrete floors due to rain seeping up thru the timber? Cos over time the timber will rot.
    Are you also not required to have all the nogs in between the studs on all walls when you were framing up the walls??

    You both do great work. You always want to use a sill seal under your frame when putting your wall on a concrete slab, just to keep water from seeping underneath, or at least apply a caulking sealer at the bottom, if you have not already.

    • @Woodbrew
      @Woodbrew  2 года назад

      The only wall we didn’t do this too was the one with the door because we will put a garage door back in that area in the future, but the ground is already sloped anyway so no water can go back under anyways.

    Amazing work! It turned out great and I bet you are very happy with the new space :) It seems rather easy and quick to enlarge house space the way you guys do in the US with wood and insolation. Here in Europe things are pretty different and the typical construction is made out of concrete and brick. Not as DIY friendly. And we need permits to basically everything. Just curious: Did you have to get a permit to make this project happen? Good luck for your next projects! I've been following your videos even though I do not comment very often. I think your audience should be a lot bigger, honestly.

    • @Woodbrew
      @Woodbrew  2 года назад +4

      Hi! We love all your work😊
      In the US as a whole permits are commonplace, but in more rural areas the gaps widen based on so many factors. In some states building permits are not required at all for residential structures, but usually required for sanitation and utilities. This project was entirely cosmetic. All of the engineering and structural aspects of the house where already in place. We simply filled in holes and technically made that part of the house wayyy stronger than it would ever need to be. This space isn’t living space either it’s not even included in the square footage our house. For instance, putting up a 5000sqft metal building for storing agricultural equipment requires very minimal amounts of permits and in some cases none at all. On the other end of the spectrum is renovating a home in the historical district of the neighboring town and now there is a waitlist to change windows permits.

    • @Woodbrew
      @Woodbrew  2 года назад +1

      It’s a bit unconventional, but because these walls are not structural and may be changed in the future we kept things simple. The hope is to one day have a free standing shop and turning this area in to garage.

    • @righthook27
      @righthook27 2 года назад

      @@Woodbrew Whoever told you it's unconventional is wrong, it's actually industry standard. I realize that those are not load-bearing walls, in your case it's not about the structural component, it's about strength. You installed the king studs correctly, but you should have attached 2 jack studs to the king studs (it's what the door jamb should actually be nailed to). I think you'll find that especially because those doors are on the exterior, the single stud flanking the doors (king studs) will eventually warp/twist and will cause your doors to bind. Good job on the garage door framing though. Just trying to help.

    • @Woodbrew
      @Woodbrew  2 года назад +2

      That wall specifically only needs to last a couple years. It’s a temporary wall that will later be converted into a second garage door. We also aren’t using drywall which needs that resistance to warping. I think with the MDF and how short the wall is that it is more an acceptable.

    Are the concrete screws enough to support the structure?

    • @Woodbrew
      @Woodbrew  2 года назад +2

      None of the walls are structural and there are plenty of screws to keep it there👍🏻

    Things has changed a lot since Dylan spilled the paint in the barn workshop

    Great job, though I would have avoided painting the brick - but I live in the UK and having breathable brickwork is important for our climate. Jealous of that workshop space - going to be a lot of excellent work done in there.

      We used a masonry paint designed to allow the brick to breathe👍🏻

      @@Woodbrew excellent! I did worry as brickwork is rare from what I understand in the US.

    Painting brick makes me sad... In general, but particularly because the people that bought my childhood red brick ranch style home just lathered it Benjamin Moore....
